ridiculous grandma there you go it's all about her new primary job join me to meet the germans on the w. . post. this is the w. news live from berlin and it is good bye for the head of germany's social democrats and they are not as is stepping down after her sense of left party fell to a historic lows in european elections and at home it's all part of a bigger political shake up here in germany raises fresh questions about the stability of the government and. also coming up the glory for liverpool as the club

members are due to meet on monday to discuss the posses future direction and alice has released a written statement about her decision. discussions in the parliamentary group and feedback from the policy have shown that i no longer have the necessary support to carry out my jussi on monday i will therefore resign as chair of the s.p.d. and on choose day i will resign as chair of the s.p.d. parliamentary group. after some analysis i'm joined in the studio by our political correspondent kate brady kate thanks for joining us. why the sudden resignation well this certainly is a direct response to those die a results that we saw just 7 days ago in the european elections of course historic lows now for the social democrats that currently the 3rd strongest party here in germany according to those e.u. election results and there's even been polls this week as well where we've seen on
3:03 pm
the greens topping the polls here in germany and of course the s.p.d. made huge losses to the greens in there is action losing more than a 1000000 voters to them so this is very much a response to those failings now nonis was seen as a fresh hope really wasn't she for the s.p.d. someone who could bring back voters off to massive losses in the last national election what's gone wrong so quickly well there really was some hope there but at the same time she faced criticism from day one of course there were many skeptics and critics within the social democrats who had advised against going into yet another grand coalition the so-called grand coalition with angela merkel's conservatives and there was that hope that the next leader of the social democrats would move the party away from the center of germany's political spectrum and move them back towards the left to redefine the party's profile and redefine exactly what it is that they stood for and we can take a look now at

a piece here about andrea knowledge and exactly what she stood for and her political career. fund to be enormous 1st joined the social democratic party more than 20 years ago as the leader of the party's youth organization she studied german and political science in one of her very 1st interviews she told g.w. that a career in politics was not in the cards. for you but i don't want to stay in politics for the rest of my life so after being chair i want to look for a real job. and for that i need a good degree. but after finishing university 4 years later now lists rose in the ranks of the s.p.d. 1st as a parliamentarian then labor minister and ultimately party leader germany's minimum wage law 1st introduced in 2015 was one of her key achievements now as has a reputation for being outspoken after her rousing speech at an s.t.d. convention party members agree to change course and form a coalition with angela merkel's conservatives rather than enter the opposition i

think that if i were going to negotiate and get some more good results that's why voting yes today is worth it. now as was the party's 1st female leader since it was founded more than 150 years ago she was tasked with steering the s.p.d. back to its left wing roots but many are now asking if the decision to again partner with the center right c.d.u. was indeed worth it. all right we will be joined now by william green coffee political correspondent william the big question how will nala says resignation impact the governing coalition with. well is a member of parliament and she of course until today was leading the s.p.d. she was not did not have a role in the german government per se so there's no direct impact you could say on the german government but this is yet another sign of how weak i'm going to
3:06 pm
michael's junior partner in this so-called grand coalition is it how weak it's become in the last year or 2 since the 2017 national elections here in germany that put the the the s.p.d. and the c.d.u. again together in what many said was an unhappy marriage of convenience to put a government together and these parties have just been weakening and weakening and getting lower and lower support in the polls and today's resignation announcement by andre and alex is just one more sign of trouble in the governing coalition. all right kate turning to you is there anyone who is an obvious successor to nala well one name that is already being thrown around is schultz who is currently the german finance minister and also the vice chancellor but at the same time if the s.p.d. . does now indeed one gets profile to the left as it promised before or were rather as it joined this loveless marriage as it was william mentioned with
3:07 pm
angela merkel's conservative then he is not the man for the job and at the moment there is no of the real obvious candidate that will be interesting in the coming days to see exactly which names are put forward by her for that position as i speak the party leader but also as parliamentary group leader in the bundestag job may be william now some political analysts are saying that governing with merkel c.d.u. only damage the s.p.d. was it a mistake to enter into this grand coalition again. many would say so the s.p.d. has been weakening and losing its its main its main. party lines its main its main talking points for years of the c.d.u. a lot of s.p.d. policies over years of being a government the cd you have been implemented with the s.p.d. has been getting credit for it that's been agel americal conservative the majority ruling party in the government will remember that a year ago the government had
3:08 pm
a very. very hard time getting finding coalition partners to form a government the s.p.d. was in a way dragged into it the president the national of the president of germany friend of steinmeyer said please do this for the good of the country please put aside your partisan bickering and the s.p.d. entered this government and now we're seeing the effect of this now with the s.p.d. again weakening in the polls and people voters struggling to see what the s.p.d. stands for and what good it is for voters to be voting for them. kate see you so people are struggling to understand what the s.p.d. stands for is this the essential problem with the s.p.d. is that why voters have just been turning away from the center i think it really is and as william mentioned for a long time has been difficult for voices now to identify exactly what it is that the s.p.d. stands for but at the same time if you think back to just a week ago as well when we saw those horrific results come out for the s.p. day straight away andrea not list who as we know now is standing down and she
3:09 pm
highlighted the point that they missed the boat when it came to tackling the main issue in those elections which of course was climate change but that was much to the gain of the green party which was polling this week as the strongest party now in germany so it's going to be interesting to see now exactly how the s.p.d. realigns itself and how it redefines exactly what it stands for of course there has also been huge societal changes as well in recent years which has seen a decrease in traditional belief. which for a long time a big pot. base for the day and that is declined in recent years a lot of soul searching to do once again for the. right political correspondent and . parliamentary studio thanks so much. all right we're going to take a look at some of the other stories making news around the world now. several people have been injured in venice after a huge cruise ship rammed into

crucial victory for a club i would say it's a breakthrough victory even it's strange that a man has been labelled a loser that has won 2 been deleted titles with bruce and the german cup but people like this with these last 6 finals they lost people were starting to wonder if he was buckling under pressure. and those victories with dortmund are so long ago no that people were starting to mutter has he got what it takes at the top is completely shattered all those all the talk and yet time for him pop props and to build a legacy he's a champions league winner he's in the pantheon no liverpool alongside joe fagan bob paisley rafa benitez as a manager this won the european cup what you want to do now is kick on from the and try and win the premier league the elusive title that liverpool haven't won since 1990 if he does that will be a mortal now with. how hard was this the time to take as a real solid one
3:14 pm
a real so for tottenham i think liverpool kind of expect to be relatively regularly in champions league finals and one of 6 teams. is the 1st in the revenue jump in the final a lot of fans will think maybe it's the last game as well and this seems like a once in a in a lifetime opportunity almost for them. having to squeak through against i.x. and not just to sit through an away goals maybe like their name was on the trophy so it's a real better disappointment the team didn't really torn up the carried injuries and they didn't play well and there's also a question mark over the manager might suppose it's you know sports really were a byword for incompetence when he took over. he's turned around but there's a question mark over whether he's going to stay he hasn't confirmed one way or the other so that could be a high price to pay for spars book liverpool fans will care about one joke or a huge lie on both sides and huge emotions as well thanks so much thank you. our minder of the top story we're following for you today the head of gemini social
