i think it is drama they are you know it's cold out there are new i'm rachel joins me from the german sunday w. post. this is deja vu news live from berlin angela merkel insists her government will press on the german chancellor said she's not planning any changes to the country's governing coalition and this comes after andrea analysis surprise resignation as head of the social democrats plunged her coalition into crisis. a minute cuba's mackinnon thanks so much for joining us german chancellor angela
6:01 pm
merkel says her governing coalition will press on with its work despite a surprise resignation today at the top of its ranks and they are not as announced she is stepping down as leader of germany's social democrats as the junior partner and metals coalition says she also plans to give up her seat in the german parliament and announcement comes as her party agonizes over its future following a double election defeat now this was under pressure off the german voters handed the social democrats their worst ever result in last month's european elections the s.p.d. also lost a regional election in the state of greyman for the 1st time in more than 17 years . the. chancellor merkel delivered her response to under the analysis reza resignation a short while ago let's take a listen to what she had to say. you know who can talk my good afternoon ladies and gentleman. and this has made
6:02 pm
a very significant decision today both for herself personally and for the social democratic party of germany and i think i would like to express the respect i feel for the decision i'm going to novices who made i have worked together with her. for many years both as journalist of labor and social affairs and a social democrat party leader of parliamentary group leader i always worked with her on the basis of trust and everything she said was completely reliable. that she is a social democrat through and through that can certainly be said but i also think she's a decent person. for dinner and of course i respect the decision that these the national democratic party will have to make in terms of the success of. the despite that i would like to speak on behalf of the government and say that we will press saw me with the work of governing this country with all of the stories that
6:03 pm
this job entails and with a great awareness of the responsibility we bear because the issues we need to address are clear. both in the federal public germany here at home and europe and in the world if you look at the situation generally and in this spirit we will continue to do our work thank you very much. ok for more analysis correspondent my actuator is outside the social democrats headquarters and we're joined by chief political editor michelle of course now who's outside the c.d.u. headquarters michele starting with you it's not unusual for both the c.d.u. leader and the chancellor to come out and give statements one right after the other what does that tell us. well it tells us that this was very much taken seriously here indeed and that the conservative c.d.u. party is also very concerned about what will now happen over the social democrat
6:04 pm
headquarters where i understand leaders are meeting there right now to decide what the future will hold for them i think it's notable here that the german chancellor spoke on behalf of the government making quite clear she is no longer the leader of the conservative c.d.u. party. her successor they're only going to come callandar had slightly tougher words spoke for 2 minutes rather than the one minute i'm going to merkel gave this whole issue basically formulating an expectation towards the social democrats to essentially get their act together to make fast decisions on which political personnel will continue and take them further as a party but also continue within the so-called grand coalition keeping this government stable as we heard from the chancellor because she is and she says there are bigger issues to get to the future of europe and the global crises right now focused on keeping the governments stable as you said both. and chancellor merkel
6:05 pm
said they remain committed to the grand coalition with the s.p.d. is that coalition now in danger. well i actually was pretty much in danger from day one they're just just very different nuances i dare say that this is the most serious point yet i think this is a potential real breaking point for the social democrat s.p.d. if it doesn't manage to make this work to take this over the summer also through what is expected to be further election defeats in eastern states going to the polls where the far right a 50 is expected to strongly and deal a blow to both big tent parties the social democrats and the conservative c.d.u. here so why fall apart now if you are expecting yet another defeat that is the real risk that the conservative c.d.u. is also taking very seriously here at gathering which essentially was scheduled to
6:06 pm
look take a hard look at their own losses those european elections just of a week ago and now suddenly we saw the succession of high level statements also from the chancellor so this is taken very very seriously indeed but nothing will happen fast. you are at the s.p.d. headquarters what's going on. well i very much agree with the analysis that nothing is going to happen fast because we've just seen a few statements come out from the s.p.d. saying that they need to take a few days and basically reexamined the party the leader of the s.p.d. himself came out and said really don't expect any results fast because while we will be making decisions on the leadership we really need to take some time and reexamine ourselves which if this is a party that wants to survive in the next few elections next coming up a few months even they're going to have to take a hard look at themselves and look at what exactly happened not only because they're their leader to step down but what has happened in the last few elections
6:07 pm
with their slipping support this is going to have to be something that they're going to have to take a lot of time in order to be able to do now what they are trying to do right now we've seen a couple of politicians come out and give a few statements to the press they're trying to present a very calm united front saying everything is going to be fine there are no major changes that are going to happen besides finding a new leader and we even saw the leader of this you throw his support behind a possible candidate already so already possible pushing forward on what could be the next steps. why the implications of what's happening here has this resignation totally shaken up the political establishment or would you call it just more of a trauma. so you say you can up the social democrat party and it is a major trauma to the stability of the current grand coalition government and what this angle americal self declared final term in office so yes this could
6:08 pm
potentially be the beginning of the end but the next couple of days will be very telling in how much stability there still is and how much willingness to stay in the government on the side of the social democrats here the conservative c.d.u. party which is supposedly stronger in this coalition is now completely at the mercy of the social democrats when it comes to the continuation of this coalition. and chief political editor me here like a thanks so much thanks so much for your reporting. now several people have been injured in venice off to a large cruise ship rammed into a tourist riverboat the accident took place on a busy canal in the center of the city it's been a long running debate over whether to allow cruise ships into venice famed but increasingly overcrowded waterways. the huge cruise ship bled its own but it was too late for the small tourist vessel
