this is day 8 of the news live from berlin under merkel insists her government will press on the german chancellor says she's not planning any changes to the country's governing coalition this after the surprise resignation of the leader of the social democrats a move that punched her coalition partner into across. america or it has welcome to the program german chancellor angela merkel says her governing
9:01 pm
coalition will press on with its work despite a surprise resignation today at the top of its ranks andrea and alice announced she's stepping down as leader of germany's social democrats the junior partner in miracles a grand coalition nala says she also plans to give up her seat in the german parliament her announcement comes as a party agonizes over its future following a double election defeat now this was under pressure after german voters hand of the social democrats they worst ever result in last month's european elections the s.p.d. also lost a regional action in the state of braman for the 1st time in over 70 years. nonis released a statement about her decision she said discussions in the parliamentary group and feedback from the party have shown that i no longer have the necessary support to carry out my duties on monday therefore resign as chair of the s.p.d. and on choose day i'll resign as chair of the s.p.d. parliamentary group. chancellor merkel delivered her response to andrea nonis his
9:02 pm
resignation a short while ago let's take a listen to what she had to say. yeah we can talk my good afternoon ladies and gentleman. and knowledge has made a very significant decision today both for herself personally and for the social democratic party of germany and i think i would like to express the respect i feel for the decision under the analysis you made i have worked together with her for many years both as gymnast of labor and social affairs and as social democrat party leader parliamentary group leader i always worked with her on the basis of trust and everything she said was completely reliable. that she is a social democrat through and through that can certainly be said but i also think she's a decent person. for dinner and of course i respect the decision you know that the social democratic party will have to make in terms of
9:03 pm
a successor for under the analysis but despite that i would like to speak on behalf of the government and say that we will press on with the work of governing this country with all of the seriousness that this job entails and with a great awareness of the responsibility we bear because the issues we need to address are clear. both in the federal probably got germany here at home and in europe and in the world if you look at the situation generally and in this spirit we will continue to do our work thank you very much. and for more analysis i'm joined by d.w. correspondent who's outside the social democrats headquarters in berlin and d.-w. chief political editor michelle occur from is now parliamentary studio we had i'll start with you we just heard chancellor merkel's comments there what can we take from what she said. you know i was in the room when all of those statements were made with the conservative c.d.u.
9:04 pm
today and i think the clear message there is that this is simply not the time to have a government crisis america mentions europe so did her successor see do you pass you to i'm going to come qanbar and the european union just election it's deciding it's key stuff to take it through the next couple of years it's key own leadership simply this is not the time for germany not to be stable and stability is the word that was mentioned quite a few times on the conservative side a determination to continue with this so-called grand coalition between the c.d.u. party under marcos party and the social democrats if there wasn't this yet again leadership crisis within the s.p.d. when you mention the party leader the c.d.u. party leader that is a great karen bower she also reacted to his resignation let's take a short listen. to something that the social democrats. quickly make the person that will relate to the decisions and ensure that the coalition
9:05 pm
remains. capable of acting for the c.d.u. it remains clear that this is not a time for party tactics we remain committed to the grand coalition so both women they're saying that they remain committed to the grand coalition with the social democrats is that coalition in serious trouble. it could be potentially because it's simply not up to the conservative c.d.u. to decide at this very moment in time whether this coalition will continue the social democrats are yet again in another crisis we heard. she's known here. basically utter an expectation towards the s.p.d. to essentially get its act together to elect a new d.j. and then to continue in government and critics within the social democrats of this whole concept of yet again another so-called grand coalition with merkel's party
9:06 pm
which never really paid in at the ballot box for the social democrats in recent years they are saying that that is exactly the problem just simply soldiering on simply won't work for the s.p.d. they are in an essential crisis and the current government angela merkel's self declared last term in office german chancellor how long that will last is currently being discussed and decided in the s.p.d. head which is my i'll just turn to you now i mean as mahela mentioned the crisis in the s.p.d. what will the social democrats now do are they likely to change course to try and win back voters. well this is a big question that has to be answered in short order here by the s.p.d. we've already heard them say that they need to take some time to actually decide what their next steps are going to do they have a couple of candidates in place 2 may or may not be the next actual leader of the party and some endorsements that have happened for who the next person could be but
9:07 pm
this is a big question for them how exactly can they win back voters who have slipped away from them in least the last 2 elections as we had mentioned earlier and how exactly can they carve out some space for themselves in this political world that is increasingly polarized there are voters was looking away to parties like the lincoln the greens and also to the far right to the what exactly does it mean to be in a political center as the c.d.u. and the s.p. do you have so often and so recently occupied antietam willing new party leader be able to smooth things out for the s.p.d. . well if they want to remain relevant they're certainly going to have to try they're going to have to smooth out not only tensions within the s.p.d. itself but also with their s.p.d. voters but this to you with their coalition partners with angela merkel and with the german public in general this is really not a good look for them this was in power for a year about before she decided to step down and it doesn't really bode well for
9:08 pm
voters confidence that has already been shown to be weakening behind the s.p.d. . back to you know what i mean would you say that this resignation from under analysis totally shaken up german politics i mean is it just a minor shot or or can we expect big things in the future. but it was a bit of a surprise that she would throw in the towel completely we all knew that she was under pressure we also known for a very long time the future of the continuation of the grand coalition between the quotes and the cd used by no means certain. till 2021 so this can be seen as yet another indication that the stability of the german government is not given and that we simply do not know what and what the next couple of days weeks and potentially months have in store for the political landscape what we do know is
9:09 pm
that those 2 big tent parties a speedy and the c.d.u. are likely to suffer yet another slump by the voters the ballot box when those eastern states vote where the far right if he is expected to potentially become the strongest party in 2 of those states so there's more trouble in store and the big question now was strategically is this the right moment for the s.p.d. to have to switch everything to 0 and have the big soul searching out a shouldn't they just ride out yet another storm at the ballot box do you later the summer as you say i mean these impacts the c.d.u. greatly is there a possibility of internal conflict over the next choice of the s.p.d. later. well we have seen a bit of internal wrangling in the past over how far to the center how far to the left german chancellor angela merkel took the party and her days as leadership her successor. certainly is sounding a lot more conservative but if this crisis within the s.p.d. is done anything it has united once again the c.d.u.
9:10 pm
leadership between its own leader and its come column by in fact i hope one of her fears this critic of the state. who's been so critical of the past couple of days stand rock solid behind her so it's a do you certainly has that reflex in times of crises social democrats clearly do it day to be chief political correspondent and correspondent thank you very much for that and. now to some of the other stories making news around the world. china has issued a rare statement concerning the 989 tenements quick crackdown on student protesters in beijing defense minister away from hay defended the military's action in which hundreds or possibly thousands were killed the 30th anniversary of the mask is being commemorated around the world. u.s. secretary of state might pump a rose says washington is willing to talk to iran with no preconditions speaking in switzerland he said the u.s. would still am to rein in what he called iran's malign activity to fundamentally.

is ready defense forces have fired at military positions in syria state media media in damascus reports that at least 3 syrian soldiers were killed early on sunday with 7 others wounded israel says the attacks were in response to 2 projectiles fired from syria towards the occupied golan heights. well turning to some sport now and the match wasn't very exciting but the celebrations lived up to expectations liverpool won football's champions league on saturday night with a 10 year old victory over english rivals tottenham in madrid their fans partied all night long on the streets of the spanish capital and the emotional celebrations continued this afternoon back home in liverpool around a 1000000 fans grated they heroes who paraded through the streets in an open top bus right there with them of course coach klopp the mastermind of their trials leading his team to glory after losing 2 straight european finals with liverpool.
9:12 pm
to talk about the liverpool champions league success i'm joined in the studio by ed make mccambridge suffering. from v.w. sports now a livable coach lost his previous 3 european finals is that right so he must be pretty thrilled about this victory well that's right he lost his 1st as bruce your dog a coach some years ago but since taking over as a livable coach in 2015 he's also managed to lose a europa league final 2 seasons ago as well as last season's champions league final so he's understandably incredibly happy to finally get his hands on was probably the biggest and best club competition in world football now let's this have a listen to what the man of the moment had to say about that i don't want to explain why we wanted only one i enjoyed every one and all the rest is not important it's for all the people around the world in the stadium with. knowledge celebrating like crazy and. tomorrow liverpool i mean we've celebrated together we would have a sensational night so a pretty important win for
9:13 pm
a club absolutely it's actually huge so we were just saying a moment ago that he'd lost these 3 european cup finals in a row but when you factor in domestic cup competitions as well but was actually on a losing streak in cup finals of 6 straight finals in a row so even though he's won some titles in the past he's one soon as they get solved in the german cup for example he was developing an unusual hobby or fooling at the final hurdle in recent years. in club competition so this will undoubtedly lay those demons the rest and of course thrust him into the pantheon of great liverpool coaches along the likes of joe fagan and bob paisley and more recently rafa benitez and if you can only get his hands on a league title something which is of a good liverpool since 1990 and some of the fans crave so much he will undoubtedly achieve immortal status among liverpool fans and only one winner of course is possible there of course losers and must mean a tough one for the tottenham fans how does that if it mean for them well it's also a huge defeat the totem is as great as it was for liverpool is just a side the top because there's an element of expectation by liverpool they think they're going to do well in europe most years but with tottenham it's not really
9:14 pm
the same this really did feel like a one off shot at glory and possibly a mixture of injuries and also getting a little bit spooked in the limelight as cost them dearly and after the game the press or press their coach rootsy approach gino chan find out if you'd be staying with the club in years to come and he wouldn't confirm whether or not he was going to do so perhaps we'll look back one day about spurs fans and look back one day i wonder what if only had they wanted to tell what could have happened if there was a lot of chatter about the standard of play of the game can you tell us a bit more about that what it was about when it was pretty rubbish it was a rubbish game everyone was really excited going into this final to really fast attacking exciting teams and 2 coaches which which really love this philosophy of a type of a you know exciting attacking football but a very early penalty a little poor word penalty after only 22 seconds sort killed the game a little bit and a lot of people expected loads of goals and high drama and you know the semifinals in the previous they both clubs came through very dramatic semifinals and then it
9:15 pm
