10:00 pm
the such a low profile we have our snoop around to catch a glimpse talking to destry lawyers disagree starts june 10th w. . this is deja vu news live from the land on the america and sister governmental press on the german chancellor says she's not planning any changes to the country's governing coalition this after the surprise resignation of the leader of the social democrats a move that's punched her coalition partner into crisis. i'm
10:01 pm
rebecca ritter's welcome to the program german chancellor angela merkel says her governing coalition will press on with its work despite a surprise resignation today at the top of its ranks andrea analysis announced she is stepping down as leader of germany's social democrats the junior partner in miracles grand coalition nala says she also plans to give up her seat in the german parliament her announcement comes as her party agonizes over its future following a double election defeat the balance was under pressure after the german voters handed the social democrats their worst ever result in last month's european and actions the s.p. day also lost a regional election in the state of rayment for the 1st time in over 70 years. chancellor merkel delivered her response to andrea analysis resignation a short while ago let's listen to what she had to say both 640 and of course i. the

decision you know that democratic party will have to make in terms of a successor for. the despite that i would like to speak on behalf of the government and say that we will press on with the work of governing this country with all of the seriousness that this job entails and with a great awareness of the responsibility we bear because the issues we need to address are clear. both in the federal public and germany here at home and in europe and in the world if you look at the situation generally and in this spirit we will continue to do our work thank you very much. let's get more now from our political correspondents hans brahms at the social democrat headquarters in berlin and here with me in the studio is day to me is kate brady welcome to you both hands all start with you how's the s.p.d. coping with this shock announcement. well obviously there's
10:03 pm
a sense of shock 1st of all and of course at the same time there's some kind of scrambling for damage control and attempts to at least. get some kind of direction for the next couple of days rather than for the next couple of weeks there have been the move to see meetings here at the social democratic party's headquarters in berlin today and they will continue tomorrow and what seems likely at the moment is that there will not be quick can you elections for the posts that are under under a law this is giving up but at the moment there will be caretaker people people of seniority in the party that will take over these positions in a caretaker position and then with a little bit more time and little bit more time forethought and full consideration the party will choose the successors to andrea not us ok the s.p.d. is the junior partner in chancellor angela merkel's grand coalition what does this mean for the government well as we heard just from america herself it seems that
10:04 pm
she and the conservatives the major party in this grand coalition that we have at the moment here in germany that they want to power on with this coalition of course they've already come against up against some obstacles since they formed this coalition back in march 2018 and it's long been seen of convenience for both of these parties and neither of them want to do right now is risk going to the polls but the conservatives and the social democrats are doing extremely badly in the polls compared to the usual levels so right now merkel is very much king to keep pushing on through until the end of her 4th and final term as chancellor and 2021 hands all come back to you as we just heard from kate. kane to keep the government going she wants to continue doing their work but how likely is it that the social democrats want to continue being part of the coalition. well in fact the social democrats have already scheduled
10:05 pm
a special party congress later in this year to consider exactly that question and the background to that is that there will be regional elections in germany later this year in the fall in baltimore and the social democrats are very likely to do very badly in those elections there is a very large faction within the social democratic party that has been fiercely opposed to participating in this grand coalition and in fact it was under way and not as who pushed the party into this coalition when she took over as one of the top leaders of the party so with her gone it's very likely that the faction that wants to get out of this coalition as quickly as possible make gain the upper hand and so it's very possible that by the end of the year this government will no longer be in existence andrea anonymous was the dry and all this was the 1st female later all of the social democrats and will come back to you both in a moment but 1st let's take a quick look at her career. hit was the high point of her career in april 2800
10:06 pm
and to be anonymous became the head of the social democrats for the 1st time in the party's long history a woman who was at the helm is going skilling in the end we're going to make it together we are strong we will succeed that's my promise. her commitment to the social democrats was unwavering born into a working class family in former west germany now is founded the 1st local s.p.d. association in a conservative district her political views have typically ranged from far left to moderate. in 1905 the newly elected socialist youth chairwoman professed her feet in karl marx i know i'm a transition i know it's the philosopher said his name will live on through the centuries and so will his work i'm certain of this. she proved her resilience both in past leadership functions and as labor minister in the previous coalition. after the party's dismal showing in germany's 2017 elections it was clear she would
10:07 pm
emerge as a key player. yesterday the s.p.d. is needed i told you so you know but more bad alexion results left deep wounds in the s.p.d. after undergoing analysis fought for her party to enter another governing coalition with the center right the s.p.d. suffered heavy losses in state elections now this is hope of reenergizing the party failed to win over voters now that her own party members have lost faith in her leadership now as has thrown in the towel after 20 years. just picking up with the analysis was one of 3 late is the s.p. day has had in only 2 years now is this crisis really about her or is this a crisis of the german social democrats in general. i think you have to say it's a bit of both certainly a very deep crisis in the social democratic party as there is in many other socialists the social democratic parties in the rest of europe if we look at france
10:08 pm
the party there is virtually disappeared for instance but at the same time there has been quite a bit of resistance the guards aren't they are not under another's herself in person and that criticism has mounted in recent weeks in recent days especially it's become very vocal very public and very hurtful to her it's been a very in a sense very impolite in the way that party has dealt with her in the public and i think that has deeply hurt her and at the same time she has realized that the support within her party has waned to such an extent that she's not likely to win any vote to further to continue her leadership so that's why she threw in the troll today and well members of the social democrats have had mixed reactions to nala surprise announcement let's take a listen. i was never a fan of nonis but the way they treated her recently they would never have done lent to him and $120.00 but since they think this is i think it's
10:09 pm
a good step towards a new start for the s.p.d. now all votes can be counted democratically understood you know cotter's all names is an issue i do think it's going to the s.p.d. will go on and. on joe. johns one of the women there saying that no man would have been treated the way under analysis was treated what do you say to that. yes there is some element of truth in that it's a political party that has been dominated by alpha males as you might say a fairly older male members of the party and they are in fact the ones that have mounted to the attacks against her in recent days one has to say at the same time that i'm glad. this is personality is rather a brace of she tends to have a language that can be damaging or hurtful as well and in some cases not very thought through her statements are difficult to to some make by some members of the social democratic party so it's a bit of both it's partly because she is
10:10 pm
a woman and partly because of her personality. so kate where do we go from here what what's happening with the german government going forward but it seems that we're going to see the german government push forward and yet again there's been another close call here for the german government another crisis averted for now but we've seen these crises cropping up at a time and time again since this government was formed and as was mentioning earlier as well this is for a long time being seen as somewhat of a marriage of convenience it was and by another so self that pushed for the social democrats to join forces with the conservatives once again but many critics both inside and outside of the social democrats party have said that rejoining forces with the conservatives once again is one of the social democrats biggest downfalls it's not really given the party time and space to to maneuver and to redefine its

profile which it was so keen to do after making those huge losses back in the 2017 national elections and now we've seen the result of what that means again what last weekend in the e.u. elections the s.p.d. suffered all time lows walking away with just under 16 percent and of course which is a bad numbers for any party let alone one that is currently part of a governing coalition so just how long this government can survive will have to see the coalition has agreed to do some temperature taken by the end of the give that's actually part of the coalition deal whether we'll even get that far we'll have to see but this is certainly sent tremors through the government once again brady and holmes brown thank you both very much. now to some of the other stories making news around the world china has issued a rare statement concerning the 989 tannin square crackdown on student protesters in beijing defense minister way way from hay defended the military's action in

the huge cruise ship led its own but it was too late for the much smaller tourist vessel to get out of the way the 13 deck opera with some 2 and a half 1000 passengers on board hit the river countess. and then pushed past it crashing into the dock. there are at least as i heard this deafening noise coming closer it was the sound of the horn we were lucky because it could have been much worse i thought the ship would reach my house for the most of it doesn't really care about the ambulance got here after 25 or 30 minutes but didn't do anything they stopped to watch what was happening a bit like everyone else did. medical authorities say 4 people were injured soon after the collision protesters gathered to renew their call to ban large
