title and everyone wants to be their backsides you know i'm a human late country and take it for my friends and family alex morgan the usa stop playing all reports the m e n a c caught up with us stateside will also take a trip back in time to find the reasons for the u.s. team success. morgan has the fines and the moves but who else is likely to figure out who are the dogs horses every move he talks to the experts about everyone's chances charges a c.e.o. who is 2 time world cup winner not referring to stay tuned to find out when i woke up special. this was me back in 99 watching the usa when the women's world cup and this is me now i'm any and i've been living in germany for the past 10 years but i'm originally from california. where i grew up

playing football. i just sat on a plane from the west you know from berlin and just ride the mustang here for only one reason back in my home state of california i set out on a mission to discover what makes women's football in america so successful whereas football is the rest of the world favorite sport it's not quite the same here in fact we don't even call it football we call it soccer it's different than it is in other countries where soccer is. what they do but when it comes to women's soccer the u.s. they are the best in the world if you're not watching their women what are you watching the usa have won the women's world cup not one not 2 but 3 times more than any other country while the current national team prepares to win its 4th title this summer in france i met the forward and star of the team the super popular. actually had to accumulate 100 tickets for my friends and family which is kind of.
9:33 pm
the best headache you could ever wish for i also met dedicated coaches i met the former soccer stars who are my generation's heroines and i met young girls who have a new heroine these days. so why is women's soccer so successful in the usa. this is fullerton california city where i grew up alex morgan grew up in diamond bar it's only a 20 minute drive away. alex and i grew up in the same l.a. region at a time when the girls' soccer was blowing up. on the field in diamond bars where alex morgan 1st started playing soccer to me it looks no different than the spots where i used to play. this is one of the fields in fullerton where i used to practice every single day i started playing soccer when i was 4 years old and that was a pretty normal thing for a little girl in california. i started out playing on recreational teams and from
9:34 pm
age 10 on played competitive club soccer throughout my teenage years i trained 4 days a week played tournaments on the weekends and went running daily to stay in shape aside from schoolwork and all the rest. ok i'm not in as good of shape as i was back then and i haven't practiced my shot in a while but i used to be really good. i met up with one of my old coaches who i hadn't seen or spoken to in at least 15 years but he still remembers how girls like me were fired up about soccer after the 99 when. you were really hard worker. very dedicated. you know a lot of enthusiasm and passion for for wanting to learn wanting to get better. and thinking you know you played with a lot of joy and you seem like you enjoyed it and i enjoyed coaching you but my

soccer past is by no means unique so enough about me i'm not the one who went pro here. alex morgan has a similar past she 1st started to play competitive club soccer at age 14 our teams even used to play against each other. i met with her former club coach and asked him what she was like when she 1st joined this team a lot of speed a lot of tenacity but no control and no patience. so that 1st couple of years from recreation into competitive soccer was a roth mindset. growth mindset experience in terms of patience and getting her to be better off and on the ball not only with her skill but her mentality and so i would say overall the 1st year 1st 2 years was a true growth experience for her but right out the gate she shot up and. reaching the storm. we're. americans competition driven mentality that starts already have

to youth level is one reason for the sports success but at times it can be even to extreme soccer clubs in the united states have to sometimes take a step back and say ok we're training 4 days a week we've got tournaments on the weekends we've got this this and that but are we letting the kids have a time to reflect and relax and breathe or we just keep shoving soccer down their throat and there were ends up happening the players have burnell too much pressure on them and then the quitting the sport whereas i quit at the end of high school alex continued all the way she played in college at u.c. berkeley went on some played professionally and numerous clubs and has been on the national team since 2010. but paved the way for her success alex was already grieving and feeling that next level added to the right of us soccer and so on that's the key i think is making sure we have idols set in place for the

young ladies to follow and that inspires them to want to do more if it weren't for the pioneers on the victoria's 1st women's national team girls our age probably never would have even played soccer let alone dream of going pro. for me it all traces back to this place on a july afternoon in 1909. i'm at the rose stadium in pasadena california and 20 years ago i was in this exact same spot in the crowd watching the women's national team win the world cup final in 1990 i was 11 years old i came with my dad and i remember it was over 100 degrees the stadium was packed full over 90000 people i remember i had faced pain on the american flag and i was sweating it out. and then i remember it ended in a penalty shoot out and. won the winning shot from the spot and then she
9:38 pm
ripped off her jersey just like the men do and showed off her. muscles and let a body and it was so cool the game remains the country's proudest moment and still holds the world record for the most attended women's sporting event in history. later that same summer i went to the julie foudy soccer camp weeklong training with the 99 er's i got to play with same. kristine lilly who is alex's idol. and julie foudy my biggest hero. back in l.a. 20 years later since i'm now a sports journalist i got to attend a training session and meet the current players and the 99 er's once again julie foudy the former team captain played for the u.s. for 17 years since the very beginning when conditions were much worse than they are
9:39 pm
today. a lot more rocci hotels $10.00 a day. as one point went to china and you know we we just existed on warm pepsi and mars bars because that was the sponsor and pepsi was a sponsor and we couldn't eat anything else yeah. but you know it we had our you know battles over the years to change things as well nick name loudy fouty back in the day for being vocal about the need for change she's still an active advocate for women's sports. their whole dream with that was people will see the potential and that we're this untapped market the women's side of sports that they should be tapping into and so i am a bit impatient with how long that has taken alex's favorite of the 99 er's was former number 13 kristine lilly a also remember. in the early years when we started we had some very talented women
9:40 pm
that were hungry to compete and be around other women that wanted to be. because a lot of us were playing with boys or. just trying to play soccer there was no women's leagues or anything so then we finally got to the national team and then around 20 other women had the same desire passion fight sweat tears that we had like this is awesome kristine lilly is the most capped player in soccer history both men and women's she was even still on the team when alex joined in 2010 when lily finally retired after 23 years alex inherited her number. when alex showed up i told her i was from fullerton the girls are good but i underestimated how far we've grown apart she's a star now and i'm one of the press still we share the same idols the culture that
9:41 pm
they started with this team will forever be branded with them the same. i feel like there's that mentality resonates with and every single one of us and that continues to be passed on and not started with. not only the $99.00 er's service role models they also began a tradition of success which gain respect for the women in sport and captured the nation's attention i actually like with the most if you're not watching the women what are you watching i mean. these men. stink women's soccer is amazing is it's like watching women empowerment is watching girls out there doing something amazing like you know guys do it all the time they do sports but guess what we do it better . yes. yes. the tradition of success has persisted over the last 2 decades nowadays alex morgan is following in the 99 er's footsteps both on and off the field she's a role model for the next. ask any little girl who are favorite player is.
9:42 pm
she connects with the fans so it's a positive example and has even written a series of children's books i'm starting a teenage movie. with countless indorsements and sponsors she's generating more excitement for the sport voted one of times $100.00 most influential people of 2019 she's also carrying on the fight for equitable pay for the women's team. plenty of reasons to make a mother proud. she stands for things such as very passion about and this is one about. whether in sports or outside of sports there's gender equality i think she takes her job seriously and the role that is presented to her and that she's fortunate to have as far as i role model you know every day she has conscious thoughts about that but what's her role on the field. i asked her coach. score goals i could make that really simple.
9:43 pm
being all penetrative option being off the fender but also being a player that's lethal inside a team and. you know i think that that's her role to penetrate behind lines to get goals with her head feet doesn't matter and alex is embracing her role scoring a plenty in 2019 she's already scored her 100 school for the u.s. she's playing the best soccer of her career. since we 1st started out soccer in the u.s. has steadily grown more people are paying attention now than ever i wonder can the current team find success once more and defend its world champion titled the summer . every team is different so this isn't a team that's defending something because a lot of that team isn't here so i think to embrace everybody and and who we are and what's in our d.n.a. is a program it's about attacking that's kind of how we're looking at this go attacked . now the world cup attack
9:44 pm
a 4 star many of the world champions from the 2015 team will not be heading to france for many on the current roster it'll be their 1st world cup like 21 year old striker mallory's few who i think might share the spotlight with alex. the usa face thailand chile and sweden in the group phase no game is going to be an easy one and obviously having sweden right off the bat in the world cup is is going to be a challenge for us but one not where i'm embracing it and definitely looking forward to it given the history we have with them it will be alex's 3rd world cup and veteran carly lloyd's 4th. i've been candid and open that i still have a huge to significant role to play on this team. and i know that i can help my teammates with that trophy in the summer and i want to do anything i can to help this team when. i just i love winning and america
9:45 pm
loves winning the 3 time world cup winners want to ensure that they remain the world's greatest team and there's no reason to think that their dominance will and anytime soon i think the u.s. always has and always has a great you mean they're always approaching the powerhouse. i think that the years in which these just dominated to me where they've just been super successful but they've always been you know one of the nations that have always been pushing the envelope from so you know what. what soccer is you know on a on a global scale on the women's side at least while the world wide competition may be catching up the u.s. are still the pacesetters and with alex i think the team is in good hands. if you ask me i do think the usa will win the women's world cup this summer but who do you think will win. the netherlands for 0 maybe england's only movie so if you're closer look at the teams ticking clocks of the $2900.00. he's previously revealed
9:46 pm
his favorites it's time for the potential surprise package. so i mean given you the big favorites for this year's world cup title now i'm going to go through some of the teams that may have slipped under your radar now as i'm basically just an idiot i've got someone who really knows what i'm talking about to help me out. i want. to call people on the apartments on to us now before i get into the outsiders for the crown 1st i want to celebrate a big moment for 4 countries south africa jamaica chile and scotland what do these nations from 4 different corners of the globe have in common they all qualified for the women's world cup for the 1st time ever congratulations to them on an achievement that could mean everything for the development of women's football i mean so many teams stepped up so it's so hard to predict it's going to
9:47 pm
win the world that's a very good thing when. it shows how much well any of them have a hope of going all the way let's take a look at what night you have to offer we'll begin with south africa the 1st african country to host the men's world cup in 2010 the legacy of the tournament seems to have helped push the women's team to new heights. there are 2 players who could define south africa at the world cup 1st. cats in record appearance maker and defensive. is a player who's been fighting to make it this far for her whole career and she's the glue holding the team together to place you in the end of that yourself so i had a chance to see her last year a couple times but last year. if she shares her experience at the other end of the pitch then being kept on it was. top scorer gone with 5 goals. a repeat of
9:48 pm
that would make south africa dark horses however they'll be up against it in group b. their opponents of china germany and spain 3 big teams who will all see south africa as a free meal. johnson said c.e.o. realistically germany will make the group in spain there's jamaica this is a team with a pretty crazy story 5 years ago they were just setting up after jamaica went several years without having a national team at all. then one of bob marley's daughters stepped in to save the reggae girls with money and support. belum ali has been an ambassador for them ever since fast forward to today and they're preparing to play against the world's elite but the problem then is that they have to play against the world's elite group c. also features one of the favorites in australia along with brazil and
9:49 pm
a decent italy side a tough task for a team that's ranked outside of the world top 50 think the most important thing is a transfer to experience the country to encourage young players to continue maybe to build up a league there it says. busy so what about the country that has won back to back men's cup american cycles now has something to celebrate in women's football to keep christiane at p.s.g. will be hoping to impress in a country where she plays her club football very athletic. she fits the. profile i like. to be she's on my list certainly won't have it easy though they face the holders and favorites the usa in group path they also take on a powerhouse in the form of sweden but they definitely have a chance of making 3rd place ahead of thailand and that could be enough to get them through to the next round but the newcomer has the best chance of making it through
9:50 pm
scotland that's despite having to face 2 of my top teams england and japan so what a scotland have a chance well they have a great combination of experience and youth. they have players who are used to competing in top leagues like captain rachael corsi and vice captain kim little and they have a rising star in every income but just 20 years old she could be a surprise star of the tournament they experience tournaments like the european championships and european championships so i really used to play. even if they can't finish ahead of england and japan i definitely think this team has enough to finish ahead of argentina and if they can get anything from the other 2 games that should see even through to the knockout stages they won't win it but they absolutely will. surprise us all in fact scotland the

one of the outsiders to watch this tournament but who else could swoop in and grab glory unexpectedly let's have a look at some of the dark horses starting with brazil i know you're thinking how can brazil be an outsider is the most successful country in world football and they have marta but it's not as simple as that firstly in terms of success you just cannot compare the men's and women's teams you know how many times the sellers are from and you know has won the world cup the zilch never knock and they've only reached the final once when they were beaten by the dean or is germany amazing. specially because this kind of people are in the end we beat them because we were the better team it's not easy to keep germany for martha she's been one of the definitive figures in women's football for well over a decade she scored more than 100 goals and been one of the best player in the
9:52 pm
world 6 times. so i hope i have a chance to see her pretty often and she still and that amazing player but she is still one of the best players in the world for sure she has a big. machine can do it all herself as proven by brazil's form over the last year in which they've lost amongst them the world cup so why do i think there's a chance they could do it anyway well i think they'll make it through their group pretty easily australia are a tough proposition they should be able to beat italy and jamaica and once they are in the knockout stages. anything is possible. longshot for the world cup team has come a long way in recent years some period have often been overshadowed by their neighbors china and japan while those 2 have both appeared in world cup finals south korea has only made it to 2 world cups before this one never getting past the 2nd round
9:53 pm
but i'm backing them to improve on that record this time around and i'm expecting one player in particular to shine diesel unit is south korea's top scorer of all time the midfielder played a big part in chelsea's champions league run this season and now she will be looking to provide the spark for her national team some amazing games shared like that kind of outstanding season so she will be a big influence but it team alongside her will be another hero of south korean football canteen and record appearance maker cho so here these 2 will be crucial to south korea making it through a tough group that also contains hosts france and former champions norway along with world cup regulars nigeria so france will make. sure. you never know and which moot no way is like a roller coaster for us to outsiders 3 with scotland i guess and i've got one more
9:54 pm
for you they are the reigning european champions the netherlands i've gone on about the netherlands in previous videos the quality of the hosts attack blew me away see but the truth is a lot came down to the home support pushing them on to victory in france they won't be able to rely on the atmosphere not only that the netherlands have a terrible world cup record their only appearance came in 2015 where they won one game out of 4 and departed the tournament in the 2nd round not exactly inspiring stuff but a lot has happened since then in particular the emergence of the anime them with more than 50 goals for the team she's closing in on the record for the netherlands friendly reminder she. only $22.00 she's also just smashed the record for the most goals in an english women super league season and been named player of the year outstanding outstanding but she was unaware. of one and she plays alongside 3 international teammates
9:55 pm
a club side. sorry one vein and domini bloodworth and danielle van dam so they should know each other's games inside out with plenty more quality in the side they should be able to get through a group containing new zealand and cameroon without much trouble even if canada will provide a tough challenge. from. well i understand. they can be so dangerous they find that very fact. yeah i would say that they could be a. finalist for the one couple has plenty to offer beyond the top things with some high quality challenges and some exciting newcomers bringing fresh blood to the tournament don't miss out on the biggest football event of 2019. 0 and did you know kickoff is now on you tube with the well the football start with nigeria and quad 1 north of mexico. to read we travel the world can ruin it for you how high is the
