11:01 pm
occupation as president dalton trumbo joins other world leaders today to pay respect to surviving veterans and to those who died in normandy 75 years ago today . i'm bring golf it's good to have you with us we begin right here in germany tonight's with surprising momentum for the country's environmentalist green party a new survey shows that if germany were to hold a general election now the greens would come out on top that would be an historic 1st for the very 1st time the greens would be 1st like i said with 26 percent of the vote fence on the america's conservative c.d.u. c.s.u. bloc would drop to 2nd place with 25 percent then we'd have the right wing populace the a.f.d. party of 13 percent medical school. current coalition partner the center left
11:02 pm
social democrats you see right there would drop to a dismal 4th place with 12 percent followed by the business from the f.t.p. 8 percent and the left party 7 percent. the green party here in germany has already celebrated a stunning result of the recent broken parliamentary elections they surged to 2nd place winning more than 20 percent of the votes voters have abandoned the traditional major parties over concerns about climate change. the greens say they've also done well in recent state elections here in germany. so talk about a green future and that what's in store for us right here in germany our political correspondent on your colors your the big table to talk about that so if elections were to be held this coming sunday i mean we'd have something we've never had before in this country we would have the greens coming out on top yeah right and you said if this is truly a historic survey results the greens have been on the rise for
11:03 pm
a couple of years from before the last general in the general elections and they were told to come out really really well in the european elections but how well they did that came as a surprise and i think they've profited hugely from people's concerns about climate change and environmental issues and this is their core competence and has been from the beginning on the greens they came out of the peace movement and vajra mental movement and this is what they stand for so the vote has turned to them so if there were to be elections this sunday you know we assuming that the conservative c.d.u. they would really do poorly which would mean uncle americal would no longer be chancellor who would be the next chancellor this isn't so easy because i think the so-called grand coalition will we main we will see
11:04 pm
them around for a bit longer. when they started off they said they want to evaluate half way through how their politics is going how the government work is going this is. you know and we all thought this will be the breaking point for the grand coalition but with these polls i don't think that either city you know s.p.d. will go for snap elections we will see uncle america as a chancellor for a bit longer. than it was just pushed forward than 2 years and when we do have elections let's say that the greens do come out on top who would be the logical green chancellor this is really an interesting question because the greens have a tradition off to a leadership and this is the situation we have right now they have 2 people at the
11:05 pm
top of the party the hugely popular for about harvard and not so well known 30 year old 38 year old i'm not a bad book and. you can't say the one is the natural candidate for chancellery and the other isn't so what are they going to do are they going to split the job are they going to swap pathways through. this is this is interesting to see how they deal with that situation and at this moment right now it's not clear what majority they could get together but they would have to put some type of coalition government together and if you say who would be the best partners we don't know and you've always good to have you here thank you. our other big story today 75 years ago today the biggest invasion force of its kind in history began the assault that would lead less than a year later to the total collapse of nazi rule here in europe but the day's

of the. for many of the elderly veterans this year's d.-day anniversary will be their last visit to the battlefields of their youth but the rows of crosses will remain a reminder to future generations of the allies joint sacrifice to defeat evil. here's some of the other stories now that are making headlines around the world sudan's pro-democracy demonstrators say they are determined to continue their campaign of civil disobedience until the ruling military council if. it comes as the african union and since that it is suspending sudan's participation in all these until a civilian government is installed dozens of people have been killed in 3 days of clashes between the military and those protestors in eastern uganda 6 people are feared dead and dozens missing after heavy rain triggered a series of landslides hundreds of houses have been destroyed in the melton is due

spree lasted from 20022005. correspondent mario mueller has been reporting from the trial in the city of old boy she met with a former colleague of those who worked with him in one of the hospitals where he murdered dozens of patients. frank locks the man still reflects on the time working alongside near to where the former nurse was his colleague for 2 years at the main clinic in our book lock someone quickly became aware that there was something wrong with her there. double my blood clot of it was obvious he wanted to be the action hero who saved people but you sometimes get that people who work in rescue services who are under the illusion that they're the big heroes hugel is one of those. who are for. the man only became suspicious after around a year and a half that's when he started to notice that patients would suffer cardiac arrests

more often when who was on duty. thank you for your paper at 1st we just thought it was bad luck until a colleague said so death who go on duty again 3 go beings despite rumors circulating neither likes the man nor any of his colleagues reported it to the police he did tell the superior about it though when he noticed that a patient had elevated levels of potassium in his blood but there was no consequences it was later discovered that who would inject patients with potassium in order to bring on cardiac arrests so that he could reanimated them and appears the great life saving hero again and again and then on a single weekend on who could shift there were 14 resuscitations and 5 tests and yet who was simply transfer to another ward and the clinic lied all the reason why your clinic director a chief physician or a nursing director still silent is to prevent the reputational damage to the clinic because we all know that that would mean fewer patients coming into our care in
11:12 pm
believe. it took several further resuscitations in the new ward for the head of the clinic to decide that google had to go now the nurse alleged to have killed 36 people by this point he was dismissed from his post with glowing references he then applied for a job at a clinic condemning her was just a few kilometers away we continued to murder unabated. 64 more patients were to die it who could send their. grandfather was one of his victims he underwent a gastrointestinal operation shortly before he was to be released he suddenly suffered a cardiac arrest so. my grandfather was resuscitated by the murderer and then 2 or 3 days later for same thing happened again so he was practically murder trials. awarded. in 2005 through there was finally caught red handed as he was about to administer an injection to a patient it was the end of a killing spree unprecedented in germany
