42 really soon irreconcilable. rock n roll. storage june 17th w. this is deja vu news live from berlin a record high for germany's environmentalist green party of major opinion polls showing the greens would comment 1st in the national action edging out how strong the macros conservatives are we witnessing a major shift in german paul tibbets also coming up. the british prime minister to resign may steps down as the leader of the tory party today we take

a look at the candidates vying to take her place in number 10 downing street. and the women's world cup kicks off in france are a number of favorites to win the trophy in what's shaping up to be the toughest competition in the tournaments history. i'm brian thomas great to have you with us we begin here in germany with what is a major surprise for the nation this morning environmentalist green party has outperformed john strong the mcas conservatives as the nation's most popular party a new poll showing if a general election were to be held on sunday it would show a truly historic result for the very 1st time to greens would come in 1st with 26 percent all of them ackles conservative c.d.u. c.s.u. bloc fall. 2nd place edged out with 25 percent and coming in 3rd right wing
8:02 am
populist if the the alternative for germany just 13 percent another jolt mackerels coalition partners the center left social democrats dropping to 4th place with only 12 percent the markets friendly f.d.p. would get 8 percent on the far left left 47 percent. ok an incredible result more on that let's talk with your political correspondent good morning hans the greens began their rise didn't they in many ways their steady rise last summer with the drought that that swept across large parts of europe and it hit germany in a hard way is that what's behind their strong showing climate change well they certainly that train that climate issues environmental issues have become the top subject for the sub top concern for voters in the last year and a half or so partly i think this is the droughts of the very hot summer that we had last year was one push factor in that. and generally that was this friday future
8:03 am
movement kind of scholars of pupils and students going to the streets every friday pushing environmental issues all of that has contributed to that and it has seen the stadia rise in environmental questions coming to before and as a result the green party which is seen as the only party that has a consistent policy on this has done very well and just 2 years ago it was migration and issues like the pensions that were topping the polls for not only just 2 years ago just before the last general election at the end of 2017 those were the issues the issues for voters that were most important standard issues one might say unemployment migration of pensions issues and that sort of thing and environmental questions were far down in the scale at the time ok let's take a look now at how the greens have moved from the fringes of german politics in 1980 s. to take the top spot in the polls for the very 1st time. i've it's been
8:04 am
a long time coming for decades in the wings on germany's political stage the greens have come into the spotlight they almost joined on the america's government after the 2017 general elections they won big in recent european elections more than doubling their seats in brussels what's their secret the party leader offered his theory following the european election result. it changes its young people involved immediately you don't have to climb a long letter before you get hurt instead you can prove yourself quickly that makes us accessible and open to social change shifts you forms of communication new issues and fresh views. but the greens also find themselves at the right place at the right time though no longer a single issue party they've always been foremost about the environment and it
8:05 am
seems enough of the electorate now is to climate change has become a top issue fridays for future has grown from a weekly student strike to an organized movement with political influence meanwhile the german auto industry's diesel cheating scandal has hurt merkel's climate reputation and her government has had to admit it will fall short of its climate goals this is fertile ground for green momentum but only a national election will show with growing popular support translates into real political power. to do with trust according to the poll the greens the most trusted party one opinion poll question showing that come out of the top if a national election were held next week that's what we've seen so how do the greens policies compare with those of the other political parties. which party has the best answers for the future that is what the pollsters asked specifically with 27 percent the greens have a massively from ackles conservatives coming in 2nd with 12 percent or coalition
8:06 am
partners as and all of social democrats falling to a devastating 2 percent also looks like a seismic shift in how voters perceive the political parties here is i think what we have to emphasize here is also the weakness of the traditional governing parties in this country the conservatives and i'm going to markland the social democrats they've been ruling they've been forming the government as a coalition for this for this and previous governments and in that time they seem to have lost a lot of support most recently both parties have been having quite intense internal debates and internal weaknesses new leaders are emerging on both sides are going to merkel has said that she's stepping down as chancellor at the end of this governing period so there's a lot of uncertainty about what's going to happen in these 2 governing parties and i think that is also contributing to the rise of the greens who are seen as more
8:07 am
reliable and more steady on on their issues when their policies and this fracturing leading to the rise of the if the on the right as well one reason for the green strength appears to be as you mentioned the other party's weaknesses the opinion poll asks this party is not paying enough attention to the issues people really care about here are the results for the governing parties 77 percent of all voters saying that about the c.d.u. c.s.u. 72 percent have the same verdict on the social democrats. this result would appear to demonstrate the claim made by the right wing populist a hefty that the conservatives and the social democrats have become decoupled that they are no longer connected with the issues that voters care about is i think we have to say this is something of a an emotional response to some extent that these parties as i was saying. in the
8:08 am
presence of restructuring themselves the social democrats are completely. helpless at the moment also in the way that they operate and the conservatives as well are trying to find new leadership trying to redefine the policies and so on and so there is a sense of emotional kind of rejection of what's happening there while at the center one has to say that this government this governing coalition is actually doing its job they are kind of that they have an agreement on what they're going to be doing in their time in government and they are following that agreement they are processing the policies that they have agreed upon but that is not really something that seems to impress voters that the middle ok doesn't impress them so it's a matter of perception a lot of that driven by by social media yes i think that's a very important aspect of it opinions and sentiment moving a lot more quickly through social media as a result of social media than the traditional parties are used to that have not
8:09 am
really found a way of responding to that. is the greens as we have just perceived as being a young party a mobile and agile party that's something you can say about the cons of those in the social democrats from thanks so much for coming in this morning else. let's review now some of the other stories making the news at this hour an initial probe by saudi arabia u.a.e. and norway suggests that the damage to their oil tankers in the gulf was likely caused by a state actor photos provided to the united nations where such show evidence of a naval mine attack the u.s. and saudi arabia have blamed iran but the sabotage iran denies any involvement. mexico has deployed $6000.00 troops to its border with guatemala in the south an attempt to stem the flow of migrants headings the united states is part of mexico's efforts to ward off new u.s. import tariffs washington says it will impose a 5 percent tax on all mexican goods on monday if no deal on illegal migration is

reached. new york city's police commissioner has officially apologized for a violent raid on the stonewall inn gay bar some 50 years ago the incident in june of 1969 sparked days of protest in the birth of the modern l.g.b. 2 rights movement had of its 1st you're gonna burst free b.s.d. missioner james o'neill admitted that the stonewall raid as it's known was discriminatory oppressive and wrong times obstacles that get in the way. it's to britain now where prime minister theresa may is stepping down as leader of the conservative party today resignation 2 weeks ago kicked off the race to replace her as head of the party and of the country 11 conservative lawmakers are vying to be the next prime minister let's have a look now at 3 of the favorites leading the race as boris johnson has the former foreign minister and the house to take the country out of the e.u.
8:11 am
on october 31st quote deal or no deal on bret's. foreign minister michael gove has backed recent days but strategy says he believes he can unite the tories another top candidate dominic robb who resigned as minister of tourism is deal rob wants to renegotiate the department deal with the you. let's go straight to london now bagot maass our correspondent there is covering this morning's you better get what happens next and how will the next conservative party leader and prime minister be chosen. well brian it's a very intricate process festival is the conservative party m.p.'s in parliament who are deciding on a shortlist of 2 candidates at the moment all these candidates candidates for the leadership that trying to convince their own colleagues their own m.p.'s conservative m.p.'s to vote for them to back them a shortlist of 2 is then decided it goes to the membership and as you said the
8:12 am
frontrunner at the moment is boris johnson the foremost foreign secretary also former mayor of london he has charm and wit he's somehow unusual character and it seems that many conservative m.p.'s think that he's some sort of tonic for the party that he could revitalize the parts you really is not in a good position not a moment in all the polls also he's very popular with the membership and and also in the wider public now he's got a lot of critics some say he's done trump's mini me they say he's racist say untrustworthy is even what some of his other party colleagues are saying m.p.'s have been saying that about him so he's a controversial character but he is the clear frontrunner at the moment then also we've got michael gove's he's done vironment minister say he has a more liberal brags it strategy and says that he wants to leave with
8:13 am
a deal he might want to even delay breaks and then dominic rob who's got the most hard line breaks and strategies of all of those but no remain a in the front runner so that's really interesting. wasn't solely i mean he asked this question what wasn't soli teresa mayes failure to deliver a workable brock's a deal that led to this juncture in british falters. well the conservative party really has been tearing itself apart over bragg's it and it wasn't going to be easy for any prime minister to deliver what she has tried to deliver and i think everybody agrees that she's been really hard working and that she has tried her best but she has definitely made quite a few severe mistakes i think one of the biggest mistakes was that she has drawn of these red lines fairly early on in the negotiations where she has said that freedom of movement for example is something that she needs to deliver and she has been
8:14 am
clear about the compromises that that entails economic compromises and she hasn't communicated these difficult compromises to the white up public so that's why people don't understand why bricks it is so complicated let's look at how all this came about. it was a careful end to one of the toughest in politics. i will shortly leave the job that is being the on of my life to hold. the 2nd female prime minister but certainly not the last i do so with no ill will but with enormous and enduring gratitude to have had the opportunity to serve the country i love. this was 2 reason may as she announced her resignation 3 years into have premiership. when she took over the job from david cameron the u.k.
8:15 am
had just voted to leave europe it soon became evident that the brig's it made could deliver was not the breaks that many had voted for. but may wouldn't be deterred and smiling through gritted teeth that she carried on with the tosk of pushing through bricks that come what may. bricks it means bricks it and we're going to make a success of it bricks it means frex it i'm very clear bricks it does mean brackets . persistence truth ridicule from the opposition. and she got flak from within her own ranks with several of her key ministers resigning as a break that. finally against all the odds and often months of negotiations london in brussels agreed on a draft prigs a deal. he you need is approved it but may fail to drum up enough support for the deal a time. mutinous members of our own party seized the moment to challenge her leadership
8:16 am
. but maze of family have to vote of no confidence amongst tory m.p.'s. to. a dog it fight over head deal ensued and briggs it was postponed in the end it was a battle that may you just couldn't win. while for whoever takes over the helm of the party and the nation back it will be bracks that that will be the very 1st pass bragg's it for sure i mean for the mainland for raja's brags that party interesting a doesn't have any m.p.'s they are surely putting the pressure for raj with his easy answers on greg said that he says he has putting the pressure on all the parties at a moment in parliament now we will have by the end of july the next conservative

the president they are hoping to find witnesses who went to a fair fight next to look because home the evening of the crime. we're obviously hoping to receive information that can help us solve the crime it's really a unique situation we're talking about a type of crime scene that hasn't been seen and has for a long time so you can go up the killing of a to look has left many of the people here in his home village in shock a german politician shot that on his own terrace to some it seems like a planned execution the case raises many questions which will hopefully be answered soon by the police. we have some sports for you now and the women's world cup starts out later today it looks set to be the most watched women's football tournament ever anthony howard dean of your sports is here to talk about that anthony good morning to you to you
8:23 am
as i was this tournament going to unfold 22 fourteen's 52 matches we've got 9 host cities we're going to kick it off in france in the capital in paris france play china it's not they hoping to do what the men did not heed and bade the the 1st of a host nation to win the tone of the one the pasha as we wind through france on the way to the final is that the final will be played in leon that's the home of the limply and i guess they are the the power of french women's football in the power of ukraine football by one the domestic title and i also won the champions league so a great place for the final in the it's in a store. site is and if you don't do you have a favorite pick in the stern and it's very hard to hide to sit on the fence for you but that's the position of most would be experts at the moment the usa are the holders they're the 3 time winners in the palette looking very strong your age and every time that's is a reliable pick japan lock was also germany to drop the mark with a great ad campaign in the lead in brazil have mata who is nicknamed pele in a skit by pele which is also nice and we had at the same time but i guess the
8:24 am
overarching thing would put a report together for you is that as we approach kick off it's a very very broad field for 7 games separate these players from immortality the usa have won the world cup 3 times making them the most successful country in the competitions history but they've never retained the trophy the team has the quality to do just that based on the round strikeout it's morgan is one of the best goal scorers in the world and she has support from stars like megan rapinoe and colleen. we are defending champs but at the same time i think the game has evolved so much i think that there's going to be challenges that presented itself in there in france. the u.s. could well come up against a familiar opponent they face japan in the last 2 world cup finals captain seche kumari will lead the team at her 3rd world cup she scored the winning penalty when japan took home the trophy in 2011 and to my guy has an extra motivation to repeat
8:25 am
those heroics she plays her club football in leone where the final will be held on the 7th of july. germany to have a lone star in their ranks creative midfielder jennifer marriage and will be one of the key players for the 2 time champions in front of her captain alexandrov pop will have to be on top form for germany to have a chance of a triumph the 3rd title would be a monumental achievement for coach martina voss tech limbaugh given that she only took over the site earlier this year. we have to look at france but also england spain and the usa japan have shown time and again that they raise the game at tournaments there's the scandinavians we as germany always get mentioned the netherlands are european champions i've already mentioned so many teams it was wonderful. indeed the former champions are all in contention to win football's biggest prize but with this year's world cup promising to be the most open
8:26 am
tournament ever many sides will arrive in france dreaming of glory. and to me get a sense from that report just how huge the growth has been over the past few years for women's football what's been driving that it started with with t.v. and that's the important step this time around the age of the members of the for this time has a broadcast deal just for this tournament so that's the modern digital foundation standard everything else is built on if the game can be seen it can be talked about and we can fall in love with the main characters what's interesting is the games on center stage the girls are on center stage but they've got the mark what are they going to say in this next month you know people talk a lot about parity but the players already are asking one serious and very simple question if you talk about parity how is it that the women's world cup has. prost pool of 27000000 euros and the men's in russia had a prize pool of 356000000 euros if this is a priority the girls want to know in very dicey times when at roland garros the girls and the guys play for the same pair prize money when will it be in the
8:27 am
women's game that they play for the same prize money to the countdown to kick off has us wondering is this the countdown to parity in the women's game ok in terms of cash is a question anthony thanks so much for coming in on that. this is the governor's live from berlin up next in our business news working women in japan turning to online platforms to stand up against mandatory high heels at the office. monica johns well it was on that i'm brian thomas for the entire team thanks for being with us so far.
