such a low profile we have. to catch a glimpse talking to just. start. t.w. . this is news a live from berlin huge protests take place in hong kong hundreds of thousands of people filled the streets to demand the repeal of a law that could see people extradited to mainland china to face charges also coming up. around 100 people are arrested in kazakhstan and say speak out against that country's presidential election saying the outcome is not in doubt.
5:01 pm
and the tally engine flick someone asked me to paint on australia the women's world cup leaving. life. a michael thanks for joining us in hong kong hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets for a huge rally against a proposed extradition long the law would allow suspects to be sent to mainland china to face trial critics of the bill fear this could lead to arbitrary detention and unfair trial on congress returned to china in 1970 but has kept its own system of justice today's march is the city's largest in more than a decade. with me now is student bonnie chang from.
5:02 pm
hong kong bonnie you organized a rally a protest against this particular law right here in berlin why is this so personal for you so basically i think like i am a student here in poland and then i and all the freedom here and i see what's happening in my hometown and that's why i think like i am someone living in a free country now i reflect a responsibility to tell the world what's happening. so you feel it's your personal responsibility yes and also like the responsibility of the home call us nothing and so that's why we stand up and have to. you telling me earlier that it's always been your plan to go back to hong kong does this make it more likely for you to want to go back to hong kong or less likely is that unfortunately less likely to go back to hong kong because like it is. our freedom of speech is affected
5:03 pm
by this effortlessly and that's why i like i will think ok maybe it will be better for me to stay in germany you know the leaders of hong kong have said that every decision would made be made by case by case basis and that those people who looked like they would get an unfair trial in china the leaders in hong kong would protect are you not buying that unfortunately not really because like the chief executive it's not electric but us and. quasi like the. power to choose like with the gun of sent back to china or not so that's why i cannot really believe in that you feel those leaders don't represent the people yes exactly yeah why is this debate taking place now. so actually is have been ticking along place but like it has been come up to the international. awareness because like they are now are trying to push. to pass the law before. the parliament. and that's why i like it angers like the hong kong people yes 2
5:04 pm
part question for you why do you think so many people showed up for this protest and do you think will ultimately make a difference. so basically because like in comparison to like what's happening in the past our phone call from referee lucia the people arrested you still saying in the hong kong person but lie after this law is passed so like the person has in hong kong then can't be sent back to china so that and then there's like difference in between like the 2 places in terms of like human rights and esquire like it is there are a lot of people sharing of really my own political views are going on to st as well for the last day or go. i'm not sure i got a funny jack activists and student here in berlin thank you so much thank you. around $100.00 people have been arrested at protests as kazakhstan holds a presidential election internet services in the central asian country have also

reportedly been shut down the protesters are accusing authorities of running a sham vote it's the 1st time since independence nearly 30 years ago at the country's soviet era rulers will not be on the ballot and many have been calling for change but once again there's little doubt who the winner will be. it was meant to be catholics down see missed transition to a real democracy but instead this. opposition protesters being rounded up in several cities during elections for the central asian countries 1st new president in almost 3 decades. there are 7 candidates running to replace the longtime former leader no sometimes not by a half but only one is expected to come out on top his hand-picked successor interim president cassim have. a generation of catholics has no
5:06 pm
no other leader another by f. and many of them fear to kind of will do little to bring change to the former soviet country. one of them is opposition activists. who spoke to d.w. from all mati just shortly before he himself was arrested at a rally. i think it's quite clear that i want to prove to the system if you can also oppose. it wait we expect. we're going. for there are rallies to try to speak to to gather the people on the squares to give it heart really support a lot of hard core doubt critic and we've called right now they believe. that in there are 1st there are they are not course one actually started to cooperate with their character you are a shrink you know what you wrote you got really scared.
5:07 pm
somebody did start a rock here. his pasta caiaphas brushed aside concerns about police crackdown from protesters saying his administration would build up and dialogue with those who support the government and those who are against the government. these images though will do little to persuade the opposition in kazakhstan that they have forces will be had when the new leader takes up the reins of power there . joining us now is aaron tilden who's been monitoring the story for us air and on top of the on top of all the arrests there's been really difficulty with with communication because extent can you tell us a little bit more about that yes well we've been in contact with several organizations were monitoring the free flow of the internet and kazakhstan and one of them i'm not blocks actually told us that they monitored a widespread internet blackout early this morning that corresponded as they said
5:08 pm
with the arrests of several critics and also boucle journalist who's spoken out against the government and that would seem to indicate that the government is attempting to censor access to the internet the free flow of information when it comes to the build up to these elections now they've also said that that they've monitored a block by civilized he's a civil streaming services like periscope or facebook live which would also indicate that they're attempting to prevent you know some of the videos like we've been seeing right now of really getting out to the public there we've also been hearing about irregularities in this election can you tell us anything about that or yes i can i've been in contact with several opposition groups and also election observation groups have been complaining about widespread regularities throughout the voting now the starts at the basic level we've seen video online of votes stuffing of election officials putting extra ballots into. the urns but also one of the groups were able to provide a video which shows one of the most bizarre election manipulation attempts i've ever seen i think we have a clip of it let's watch it right now now as you can see one of their election
5:09 pm
observers notice an irregularity with the pens used to sign ballots now to demonstrate that to election officials he actually signs this piece of paper and what's going to come up here in just a 2nd now is really the really quite impressive he takes it over and shows that the election officials are sitting here and as you see he's going to expose the ink to a bit of heat and you see what happens the ink that is supposedly being used to assign these ballot papers disappeared to be joking no no it disappears the 2nd he exposes it's any type of you know the implication is obvious if these pens are being used widespread that could easily make it possible for i'm alleging officials or even the government to change the voting it's a really quite damning video but as we've said we don't know how widespread the use of these pens are oh this is supposedly happened in the district outside the largest city in kazakhstan we don't know how widespread the pens are but it is another example of some of the irregularities that people line have been complaining about all day extraordinary thanks so much for that thank you. now to
