being rounded up in several cities during elections the central asian countries 1st new president in almost 3 decades. there are 7 candidates running to replace the longtime former leader nestle thomas not by a half but only one is expected to come out on top his hand-picked successor interim president cassim have. a generation of catholics has no no other leader and another by a half and many of them fear to kind of will do little to bring change to the former soviet country. one of them is opposition activists. who spoke to d.w. from ati just shortly before he himself was arrested at a rally. i think it's quite clear that there are once you have started their own publicity them if you can oppose. it and we expect. we're going to

8:07 pm
is due to abuse aaron tilden who's been monitoring the story for us and good to see you in addition to those arrests i understand the communications have been difficult all day in kazakhstan today as well can you add to that yes i can one internet observatory network called not block that we've been talking to has said that they noticed a widespread decrease in air traffic this morning indicating that the i.s.t.'s units are providers in kazakhstan or stretching the flow of some of them free communication in the country now this supposedly korak was coordinated with the arrest of several high profile journalist opposition figures an attempt to prevent their message from getting out to the people in large. they've also been concerns i understand about irregularities yes there have been while we've been talking to many different election observer groups local groups on the ground in kazakhstan and they've sent in some rather interesting video i mean we've seen some reports of ballot stuffing those election workers putting made to way too many ballots in the ballot boxes but also there was this video which i believe are seen right now and
8:08 pm
it shows what one election observer saw in a in a district outside of. the largest city basically said there were some irregularities with the pens people are being used to vote on now we see him signing a piece of paper right here he brings it out to some of the election workers and shows that the in caruthers surprisingly is actually disappearing ink when it's exposed to heat or over time as well as reading it vanishes and completely disappears now it's kind of a shocking almost comic book twist but according to election of reserve service i've spoken to and some of the research we've been doing it's actually a substantial trick that's been used to kind of discredit the voting in certain regions so to be clear that would be a ballot basically you would write on that thing and then your vote would disappear exactly and that's kind of the strategy we've seen now this is something that's cropped up in several posts over countries and the last several years in 2004 in ukraine there was a very very famous and actual widely reported incident of this tactic being used as a way to discredit the votes in a certain area to make sure that the votes that would most likely go to
8:09 pm
a certain candidate wouldn't be counted in the long term so you know it seems quite you know quite surprising if you see it but it is a trick that does have some history behind i think you're beginning to answer my 3rd question which is essentially how can we be confident about the authenticity of the video we just saw well as i was saying i mean that is the big question right now the organization which provide us with the video said they're looking into it themselves they have seen these reports of this in other areas as well they're checking their own video talking don't reporters right now but as i said this is a tactic which we've seen in other post soviet countries like the ukraine would be the 1st definitely wouldn't be the 1st time in all of this isn't the only irregularity that we're seeing there so there are going to be some press conferences in the coming days from the observing groups so i have to wait and see what exactly they found while they were observing these elections and thanks so much for that information thank you. here's one business that shows bigger isn't always better garden gnomes have a long history in germany but one of the country's last traditional no
