general strike leaves streets deserted that's the latest strategy of government opponents who want to force the ruling military council to resign. and that the women's world cup the italians inflict some last minute pain on australia making for a perfect comeback after a 20 year absence from football's big stage. welcome to the show in hong kong clashes have erupted between police and demonstrators thousands of people rallied against a proposed extradition law it would allow suspects to be sent to mainland china to face trial critics of the bill fear that this could lead to arbitrary detention and unfair trials hong kong was returned to china in 1997 but has kept. it's own

justice system today's march is said to have been one of the largest in hong kong's history. for more on this i'm joined now by a glacier from the hong kong digital activism group keyboard frontline and student body chang who has organized rallies against this bill here in berlin glacier let's start with you you've been in contact with people in hong kong today who took part in the protest what did they tell you they told me that the situation it's not really good in hong kong the conflicts are still ongoing around 50 to 100 people are now surrounded by police and the district and want and they're now being sent to various police station and throughout the day there have been filing conflicts between the police and the protesters while the police are using. file and so again unarmed protesters they use but tons tear gas and pepper spray and there are photos that have shown that they are having guns and they're carrying guns for. using against a protester be pursued is this deterring the protesters though or are they planning
11:03 pm
to to keep fighting for this bill to not go through i think some of them are deterred but many of them are being triggered by the use of force and they are actually more angry and because already a 1000000 people have been on the streets but still the government have ignored it and said they were reviewing the 2nd reading of the bill anyways and people are mainly triggered saying that if a peaceful protest would not work they would they would have to be forced to use force against or more violent protest against the bill what's what's to be expected then i am not sure currently many around 50 to 70 people are being arrested and lawyers on the way to the police station to try to help them with their legal issues but we're not sure what will happen within today but we have heard that there are rumors of people organizing strikes on the 12th of june we're not sure it will really happen yet. organized a rally today in berlin against. this bill why do you feel so strongly about it
11:04 pm
because like i'm living in the really free country like germany but what what i see in my home country what's happening and i feel like i'm a foreigner i listen here like the responsibility to bring this on the national level that's why i'm doing this really how is the response been here and germany so it's quite good actually is like 200 people show up and mostly like they are from home call and also the germans as well who show up in the rally. later on called leaders have said this bill would not lead to the extradition of dissidents and critics of the chinese government but people obviously don't believe them why is that i think that just because obviously china it's a country without rule of law with a fair trial and within their targets record of human rights violation it is hard to believe that any individuals regardless of their nationality once being extradited back to china would be able to receive treatment that is of enough
11:05 pm
respect for human rights and they are not going to face a fair trial it is very dangerous even in hong kong we are losing our faith in the judicial system look at the recent 2 refugees from hong kong and now in germany re walk and work out when we can see that we have already lost a lot of faith no judicial system let alone the chinese one. bonnie if this bill goes through do you think this will change the way you view your country or the x. community living outside of hong kong how they view their time i think it will be a really hard decision to go back because like then they will be way more dangerous to go back because like all freedom of speech is. affected thank you very much bonnie chang student living in berlin and glacier of activists living in hamburg thank you very much. to kazakhstan now where interim president causing young aren't high and has won the presidential election exit polls give the incumbent around 70

percent of the vote election day in the country was marred by the arrest of hundreds of peaceful protesters thank you the harmonies of running a sham vote to cry and was handpicked by a long time former leader known full time not far by and his opponents fear he will do little to bring change to the former soviet country. earlier we spoke with journalist marie standish and kazakhstan capital nursultan about the situation in the country the day was marked by these are the biggest protests the country seen a 3 year people protesting my guess what they saw as a pre-determined vote something that was i've been unfair election process and there was protests across the country a quite large the largest were in on monday with the financial hub down in the south and north of the capital where i. interior ministry said that around 500 people had been arrested by around the time polls closed today including several

journalists who were out there before the protest. it's my understanding that the journalists are now released or most of them although i haven't confirmed that but many of the demonstrators who are protesting peace peacefully are still in detention the police when i was out on the square today you know they're very forceful you know wearing black mask squad right here they drag many protesters to vent in buses that where we are by loading them on their way with them detained and called off to jail so this is by far the most dramatic thing on terms of arrest the midterm election process but it also fits with what had been kind of simmering under the surface attached to the buildup to the post which also saw a pretty systemic crackdown on activists and other protesters. let's now take a look at some of the other stories making news around the world thousands of people have crossed into colombia after venezuelan president nicolas maduro opened

a free of the women's world cup and joining me to talk about all the action is ali moving from d.w. sports alley welcome in today's 1st match australia took on and only had about one go yeah i expected a tight game here the i have to say i was still a little surprised by the outcome and that's because italy who were very much the underdogs going into the game pulled off an excellent despite a very talented australia side before us anything else about it why don't we take a look at the highlights. australia were awarded early penalty and a chance for a dream start captain samantha kirk responsibility sloughing her lines 1st before slotting home the rebound was a heavy touch from defending clint poking home allowed italy's bar but i've been in a run i'm told in the 55th minute. the striker staying cool to drink her side level. with the game will

injury time italy want to free kick. and been in 0 was under its again to score and hand her side a dramatic late winner. the whistle went shortly after confirming that she won results it's a pill to swallow for dark horses australia. a bitter pill indeed what went wrong for us well they just didn't really seem to have their act together today i mean i think their performance was kind of summed up by the goal that they scored which was you know a rebound from missed penalty that really gets into your brain all together in particular the defense was was not on form today they were all over the place italy could have scored more goals in fact they did score another 2 goals that were disallowed for offside let's talk about italy a bit as well though because obviously this result was not just about australia they haven't been

a world cup for 20 years before this i think they went under the radar for a lot of people but a brilliant performance today barbara on and say of course to the fore in that and certainly to me they look like they belong on the in the big stage fans and not scotland an easy one not quite know this was another tight game between 2 old rivals of course england and scotland. expected to win they were the favorites but you know scotland have improved a lot in recent years and we can take a look at some of the goals and i think now it was a penalty actually they got enough mark here a little harsh maybe. he's paris the mind he smashed it hard to put england ahead and actually before half time alan white here you need a full finish i have to say pouncing on a loose ball in the box and look at this curling it just out of the keepers raging inside the far post. lights on in the game they pull the. but through clay. it was england who held out for only the 2nd opening game victory that they have a hot at
