president donald trump recognizes the golan heights as israeli territory our correspondent tells us what's behind. america evanston it's good to have you with us. hundreds of thousands of people are again rallying in hong kong they're demanding the resignation of the city's probation leader carrie lam even after she bowed to pressure from huge street protests lam has apologized for her handling of the controversial bill that would allow extradition is to mainland china discussions on the new law have been suspended indefinitely the pro-democracy demonstrators want the bill scrap completely they say they've lost all confidence and they're also angry over what many perceive as excessive use of force by police against the protesters.
4:02 pm
building a is at the scene in hong kong where he told us more about the growing anger towards the government in resistance to this law project has been huge from the beginning we have seen more people on the streets than probably ever since 997 since the city was handed back to china but the government has made a lot of mistakes it's almost like a playbook on how to ignite people's anger has apologized for some of their actions but this comes way too late people have been expecting an apology for wednesday's violence since wednesday since maybe thursday she has not reacted yesterday she defended the police actions she called them measured which is of course not what people feel here and then yesterday she cough withdraw the bill but not fully withdraw it so people have really lost trust in this government people do not think
4:03 pm
she is sincerely reconsidering her policies. were some analysis i'm joined now by their bartsch he's a senior chinese expert at that bertelsmann institute here in berlin thanks so much for being on our program so many people have been comparing these current protests in hong kong to the umbrella movement 5 years ago back then protesters they occupied major streets in hong kong they're trying to get a greater say in the political process but we know of course that those efforts failed so how likely is it that this time the protesters can succeed. on 1st so it looks like they succeeded because kerry actually did postpone the extradition law and she did apologize she apologized a bit at least but the question is going to be whether that is going to be a long term success and i'm very skeptical there because the big game that is being
4:04 pm
played is that the beijing government that the communist party of china is trying to get hong kong under its control and there is no way that beijing is going to stop these efforts i think they're actually even going to increase them because the one thing that beijing does not accept is a challenge to its authority and this protest this un president of protest of this size this is so much bigger than the 2014 umbrella movement protests this is something that actually scares the beijing government and they don't want to see any of that to get so they're going to get very very tight fisted and i think we're going to have a very tragic aftermath of this so should hong konger is basically a prepare themselves for the inevitability that their independence and their autonomy from mainland china is basically on the verge of being eliminated. this protest shows that people in hong kong are very much afraid of exactly that and
4:05 pm
nobody expected them to turn out in such huge numbers it shows that they're really concerned about this happening and a lot of the rhetoric of the protest has been that we have to defend our autonomy what's left of it now because if we don't do it now it's going to be gone forever while the leader of hong kong kerry last she was saying this is really about a lack of communication or that explanation of what this extradition bill is really about has there been any specific statement then from beijing about what's going on you know beijing has been very quiet publicly the whole events in hong kong more or less sense that in mainland china all that they have been reporting is a little bit about it in hong kong but we must absolutely expect them to internally send very very strong messages to hong kong how they want this handled
4:06 pm
basically from their point of view kerry had one job to do and that was to keep hong kong stable and to not have any protests and she failed majorly in this one big task that you have from beijing so she's going to get a lot of heat from the central government all right bart senior chinese expert of the vettel institute here in berlin we thank you very much for your insights thank you. now let's turn to some of the other stories making news around the world the jerusalem court has convicted sarah netanyahu the wife of israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu of misusing state funds after she spent thousands of dollars on lavish meals at her official residence fraud charges were dropped as part of a plea bargain in which she'll pay a fine. saudi arabia has blamed its rival iran for the recent attacks on oil tankers in the persian gulf tensions are escalating after the united states

4:08 pm
