completely without power in one of the biggest blackout ever recorded at the latest from what osiris. played. by marrying evans dean it's good to have you with us. hundreds of thousands of people are again rallying in hong kong they're demanding the resignation of the city's probation leader carrie lam she bowed to pressure and apologized to the public for her handling of the proposed bill that would allow extraditions to mainland china pro-democracy demonstrators want the bill scraps completely they worry that the bill is one of many steps to chip away at hong kong's freedoms and the legal autonomy. oh. after more than a week of mess of protests the human tide showed no sign of abating it was kerry

lem's 2nd back step in as many days on sunday a day after she promised to suspend the extradition bill hundreds of thousands of people clogged the streets of central hong kong to demand that she remove the bill permanently and that she steps down they began to gather early on sunday morning umbrellas a symbol of their pro-democracy desires as much as protection from the blazing sun by evening the streets of downtown hong kong were packed that kerry lamb had taken one step back wasn't enough the people demanded an apology and eventually they got one she apologized for the way her administration tried to pass the china extradition law saying she had misjudged the public mood she admitted that the law had led to conflict and distress but still hong kong's people don't feel lam went far enough. i definitely this is not

a fellow man that was you have to have out of though we are united as one that's got more than a 1000000 people going on the street this is a very saddening tie so that is good that we can see people getting united and that they all stand together as one to public anger still seeds following violent clashes on wednesday when police used tear gas rubber bullets and bean bag rounds to disperse tens of thousands of protesters. so the other you're basically we must teach the children to tell right from wrong. hong kong students came out peacefully to express their opinions so you know even though they were a little impulsive the police should not use rubber bullets tear gas and bean bag round assad to deal with students. now it appears that nothing short of kerry lem's resignation will make the people back down.

we're some analysis i'm joined now by bear hug bartsch he's a senior chinese expert at the bertelsmann institute here in berlin thanks so much for being on our program so many people have been comparing these current protests in hong kong to the umbrella movement 5 years ago back then protesters they occupied major streets in hong kong they're trying to get a greater say in the political process but we know of course that those efforts failed so how likely is it that this time the protestors can succeed. on 1st so it looks like they succeeded because kerry actually did postpone the extradition law and she did apologize she apologized a bit at least but the question is going to be whether that is going to be a long term success and i'm very skeptical there because the big game that is being played is that the beijing government that the communist party of china is trying
5:05 pm
to get hong kong under its control and there is no way that beijing is going to stop these efforts i think they're actually even going to increase them because the one thing that beijing does not accept is a challenge to its authority and this protest this unprecedented protest of this size this is so much bigger than the 2014 umbrella movement protests this is something that actually scares the beijing government and they don't want to see any of that to get so they're going to get very very tight fisted and i think we're going to have a very tragic aftermath of this so should hong konger is basically prepare themselves for the inevitability that their independence and their autonomy from mainland china is basically on the verge of being eliminated. this protest shows that people in hong kong are very much afraid of exactly that and nobody expected them to turn out in such huge numbers it shows that they're really concerned about
5:06 pm
this happening and a lot of the rhetoric of the protest has been that we have to defend our autonomy what's left of it now because if we don't do it now it's going to be gone forever while the leader of hong kong kerry last she was saying this is really about a lack of communication or that an explanation of what this extradition bill is really about has there been any specific statement then from beijing about what's going on you know beijing has been very quiet publicly the whole events in hong kong more or less sense that in mainland china all that they have been reporting is a little bit about it in hong kong but we must absolutely expect them to internally send very very strong messages to hong kong how they want this handled basically from their point of view kerry had one job to do and that was to keep
5:07 pm
hong kong stable and to not have any protests and she failed majorly. in this one big task that you have from beijing so she's going to get a lot of heat from the central government all right bart senior chinese expert of the vettel institute here in berlin we thank you very much for your insights thank you let's turn now to some of the other stories making news around the world. saudi arabia has blamed its rival iran for the recent attacks on oil tankers in the persian gulf tensions are escalating after the united states released a video that it says proves that iran is behind the attacks for its part tehran says the allegations are baseless. a jerusalem court has convicted sara netanyahu the wife of israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu of misusing state funds that's after she spent thousands of dollars on lavish meals at her official

neighborhoods in the cd but i have a lot of call friends that are leaving the a few blocks away from here and they still haven't gotten the lights back you are saying the power outage at 7 am local time it affected the whole country so over 40000000 people are without light right now the government has said that it will take about 6 to 8 hours for everyone to recover as a tree city the most affected areas are the south but i warn you in particular because this area that's sort of the way from the central electricity faces so as you can see the lights are slowly coming back up but the city is completely paralyzed and what a sight is there are no train services no subway service we are being told by the main water company i sat. our water usage because the water distribution system is completely dependent on the electricity so everyone has been affected and we're
5:10 pm
waiting to see what happens next with that with the light on when it's going to come back for everyone has there been any information from officials on what caused this massive outage. so there have been the government has identified the probable site where the problem has originated probably originated from a failure of. a dam back in the northeast of argentina there has been songs and months of rain in the past few days so that was probably has caused a savior in the exams as far as the whole city or in the whole national system all right journalist porting from when i was iris many thanks indeed. turning now to russia where several 100 people have rallied in the capital moscow in support of investigative journalist yvonne glenora of today's demonstration was
5:11 pm
authorized by the government but an unsanctioned rally marking golan i was released earlier this week led to more than 500 people being detained the journalist was freed 5 days after being arrested on drug charges supporters say he was framed by corrupt police and they're calling for action on authorities abuse of power well our moscow correspondent asked protesters why going off case mattered so much to them. you need to be an active citizen of anything is going to change for the better if you don't take any action nothing will change when you present us not that much the journalistic solidarity should not just exist in words but needs to be shown through action. the way russian society has stood up for people to call enough and. that's the way it should protect all the citizens of this country. show up see it get out of the regardless

of whether they are journalists or just normal citizens. on the international stage a local mayors election doesn't usually attract much attention but here in germany a vote in gurlitz is coming under close scrutiny the eastern german city is voting in a runoff election for the next mayor it could see a candidate from the far right alternative for germany elected to the post this would be a 1st nationwide his opponent is a member of on the americans conservative christian democrats today's vote is seen as a bellwether for several regional elections later this year. well for more on the story i'm joined now by reporter aaron tilton so aaron tell us a little bit more about this candidate sebastian vip from the far right. what makes him so popular with residents right now well i think it's about how he's portraying
5:13 pm
himself to the public you have to realize he's a 37 year old former palooza lieutenant who's running on a law and order platform and as we were saying just now he's from the the alternative for germany which has been kind of a right wing insurgent party that's really mixing up the german political stage now they really kind of shot to. shot to notoriety throughout the country with their rather virulent immigrant anti migration meant a refugee platform and this is something that has been concerning to a lot of the more established parties throughout the country what's interesting about this election is it's the 1st time that the alternative for germany would actually be able to gain a real strong foothold in the local government which could be then used to project their power in the upcoming elections what's interesting though is they really seem to be distancing themselves from a lot of that anti migrant rhetoric that we've seen before and as a as a way to kind of show that the more there's a bit more mature a more established party something that people in the middle of the political

spectrum could actually vote for well what about his main opponent from uncle americans part of the c.d.u. what's his strategy for challenging from the f.t. well it's actually less about his opponent and more about his backers what we're seeing right now is a coalition of all the established parties coming together saying that they cannot tolerate a member of the a.f.d. actually becoming the mayor even in the smaller community so what you're seeing is a coalition forming a very unlikely bedfellows we have the conservatives who are also being backed by candidates from the left party from the extreme left wing party and also from the greens they're all saying vote for the c.d.u. candidate vote for miracles candidate so that they can prevent the a.v. from actually gaining. this foothold and just very very quickly aaron regional elections coming up in saxony in september how will the a 50 fare well if you believe the polling right now they could fare very very well and that's why a lot all eyes are really on this may or election today because we have 3
5:15 pm
parliamentary elections in the region coming up soon in in september and if the f.t. does well here and there it could really cement this far right party as one of the the main fixtures of the german political landscape. reporter aaron tilton we thank you very much for that thank you. and you're up to date now on d w news stay tuned for a shift to living in the digital age omarion evans teams from me and the entire team here in berlin thanks for watching. i. have to get through the bundesliga break without a football 6. 6 . 61900.
