player. player. this is deja vu news live from berlin hong kong protesters keep up the pressure mass rallies go on into the night calling for hong kong's probation leader to step down times after she's balanced pressure and drops plans for a controversial extradition law also coming up. police here in germany arrested a man on suspicion of murdering a politician 2 weeks ago the victim was a member of chancellor on the america most christian democrats.

i'm married to evanston it's good to have you with us. nearly $2000000.00 people have been rallying in hong kong they're demanding the resignation of the city's probation leader carrie lam she bowed to pressure and apologized to the public for her handling of the proposed bill that would allow extraditions to mainland china but pro-democracy demonstrators wants the bill scraps completely they worry that the bill is just one of many steps to chip away at hong kong's freedoms and legal autonomy oh say. after more than a week of mess of protests the human tide showed no sign of abating it was kerry lem's 2nd back step in as many days on sunday a day after she promised to suspend the extradition bill hundreds of thousands of
7:02 pm
people clogged the streets of central hong kong to demand that she remove the bill permanently and that she steps down they began together early on sunday morning umbrellas a symbol of their pro-democracy desires as much as protection from the blazing sun by evening the streets of downtown hong kong were packed that kerry lamb had taken one step back wasn't enough the people demanded an apology and eventually they got one she apologized for the way her administration tried to pass the china extradition law saying she had misjudged the public mood she admitted that the law had led to conflict and distress but still hong kong's people don't feel lam went far enough. time up there i'm here to condemn the police violence against us it's unacceptable that the police define our demonstration last wednesday as a riot. lambe even justifies the police violence as righteous measures that's why
7:03 pm
i'm here to urge her to step down. or i came out today to urge the government to release people arrested in mass clashes last wednesday actions speak louder than words we want concrete action from her but not a statement. the fonz and so i out they just jog public anger is still seen as following violent clashes on wednesday when police used tear gas rubber bullets and bean bag rounds to disperse tens of thousands of protesters that are you know if the police must apologize for using excessive force and the situation is still unacceptable unless the bill is withdrawn what she does is just muddle through half heartedly now it appears that nothing short of carry lem's resignation will make the people back down. to w.'s but he is building is following the developments in hong kong and he joins us now for more but he is quite late already in hong kong and yet we're seeing so many people still out on the streets why are they still so
7:04 pm
angry. i think anger has built up over this week and this is to a do to a in a big part to the handling of the government of this crisis when you have a 1000000 of people on the street like last sunday you have to react to it you cannot say thank you but we are going to carry on then police brutality. with nourished anger further last wednesday people felt that the police had been overly brutal in getting people out of this area that you see now behind me so when caroline finally made a step back it was already very late and it was only half of what the people had expected people feel entitled now to go on the streets again they also feel that power we have seen more people even than last sunday today so this is going to last

i think. all materials so many people have been comparing the current protests in hong kong to the umbrella movement 5 years ago i mean back then protesters were trying to gain additional say in the political life of hong kong that movement unfortunately did not yield any results how likely is it that the protests this time around are going to change anything. similarities are striking it's the same streets the street you see behind me was one of the hot spots in 2014. it's very hard to say because it does not depend on the hong kong was on not even on the hong kong government in its own to what what will happen next beijing has a say in that and beijing is not known for seeking dialogue with people who protest it as we all know so it's very hard to predict what's going to happen next. it's
7:06 pm
also unlikely that the government will put forward this bill any to. time soon because it would just weeknight the whole city again so if we just look at the the main issue of this bill i think protesters are already more successful than that time but in getting more freedoms and getting more say in the city's politics i doubt there will be significant steps in the near future. when just how much is hong kong's otani and its independence from mainland china really at risk. pos rhythms are eroding they have been eroding slowly over the past few years we have seen for example beijing of ducting people from the city and putting them in jail in china so this is probably presumably a reason why beijing also wanted this bill although now the probe it income says it
7:07 pm
was kerry lam's idea but beijing would have had a legal handling to just have people from hong kong delivered to mainland china and there wouldn't have to dock them critical books are disappearing from the bookstores and people were fearing that exactly this bill that would it would tear down the fire wall because big between hong kong's rule of law that still exists and this arbitrary mainland system. all right the devil is mathias burning now reporting for us from hong kong we thank you very much. well police here in germany have arrested a man on suspicion of murdering politician vonta luka a regional official from uncle americal c.d.u. party he was found 2 weeks ago with a gunshot wound to the head in his garden in castle in central germany police investigating the killing say the suspect is a 45 year old man and though unconfirmed german media is reporting that the man is
7:08 pm
known to be from the far right. well for more on this story i'm joined now in the studio by chief political correspondent and christmas so hello to you michel what more do we know about the suspect who's been arrested and how police managed to track him down well officially we know very little but what we're also reading through those media reports which is among them germany's largest selling tabloid built size is that this man was basically found by cross-checking d.n.a. traces that were found in the clothing. and that that led to this 45 year old man who has previous serious convictions and the whole reason why there's so much reporting on this case what could be a regional criminal case really is that it's a regional politician who's known to have defended migrants in the past and if
7:09 pm
there truly is a right wing connection with this particular suspect and that man is found guilty this would actually be a political murder here and many. michelle tell us a bit more then about this victim vijay looka and his views and his role in the community a vital look at the height of what became known as the migration crisis in 2015 here and he actually defended ackles open arms policy for migration and in one particular instance he reminded people who were being very negative about a migrant institution of christian values of you know the seed in this conservancy you stance a christian and that if they didn't like those christian values they should basically leave the country now another reason to look for a cafe at this case is that after this chile i'm still don't know who actually did this there were right wing extremists online who were celebrating his death who
7:10 pm
were really boasting about it and we even saw the german president condemn this kind of rhetoric and we're already hearing from somebody who was on the investigative committee of the n.s.u. mud a series where basically far right wing extremists just simply went and shot germans with a migratory background and we already had to vent out from the left posse calling for a special investigation or a special meeting of the interior committee of the to talk the parliament if this link is truly established so far right but we're not really expecting any official information to come through on this until next week all right so quite a lot of reaction within germany to the killing both positive and negative are there fears that this perhaps is not an isolated case of this is the start of something very sinister in this country well that we're really getting into wild speculation territory and i think we're still at the point where establishing what this actually was but there can be no doubt that if this link is established and

this was a right wing motivated murder that would be a watershed moment both in of all basically in german politics but also in society . as chief political correspondent mission occurred thank you very much for that machine. all right let's have a look now at some of the other stories making news around the world and a massive power outage has left all of argentina and uruguay as well as parts of neighboring countries in the dark residents of or of wise capital montevideo were among the 10s of millions of people affected by one of the biggest electric blackouts ever recorded. a jerusalem court has convicted sarin a time the yahoo a wife of israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu of misusing state funds that's after she spent thousands of dollars on lavish meals at her official residence fraud charges were dropped as part of a plea bargain in which will pay a fine. the 1st mass has been held at not

me every 4 years it's the same people and every 4 years they come for the same thing and the one thing we're not so i'm not really convinced by any candidate. for guatemalans the truth is we need change and with these candidates who are leading the polls we won't have anything for bill change for guatemala and will stay the same or even get worse. the country's former attorney general thelma alexander had been top in the polls before she was kicked off the ballot over allegations of fraud and lying she was well known for leading several anti corruption investigations in the country and her supporters so her removal from the list as a move driven by corrupt politicians since then former 1st lady sandra taurus has emerged as a favorite with a strong support base in rural areas her main rival is right wing candidate. who is seeking the presidency for a 4th time but it's likely neither of them will gain the majority needed to avoid
