in the morning strong. storms joined twitter on t.w. . business t w news live from berlin u.s. officials say they were just minutes away from bombing iran before military strikes were called off president dollar trump says he canceled the planned assault because 150 people could have been killed the attack would have been in retaliation for terror on shooting down an unmanned american spy drone also coming up a domestic route boris johnson's london home rocks the u.k.

leadership race we'll go live to our correspondent in london to find out how this might affect his chances of becoming britain's next prime minister. and that the women's world cup excitement builds as one of the tournaments favorites germany open the round of 16 with a clash against one geria later today. i'm nicole frilly thanks for joining us. american officials say that planes were in the air and battleships in position but at the last minute u.s. president donald trump decided against military strikes on targets and iran he said the likely death toll would have been too high iran meanwhile has said it will respond firmly to any u.s. threat as tensions between terror on and washington continue to rise from these

pieces of debris almost triggered a war visibly beaming the iranian military presents the remains of an american drone teheran claims it had penetrated iranian airspace that's why they shot it down. the u.s. military said the drones were actually in international airspace an american counterattack on iranian radar and rocket positions was imminent trump said on friday but the expected death toll would have been around $150.00 and he said because of this he decided to call off the attack so you know what they shut down. and. drone plane whatever you want to call it and here we are sitting with $150.00 dead people that would have taken place probably within a half an hour after i said go ahead and i didn't like it i didn't think it was i didn't think it was proportionate leaders of the opposition party in the u.s. congress said this was the correct decision but at the same time they cautioned
3:03 pm
against any escalation the president may not intend to go to war here but we're worried that he and the administration may bump into a war mark kimmitt who was assistant secretary of state under george w. bush said trump is not unpredictable but rather sticks to a consistent strategy to avoid a new war in the middle east. interleague i think he made the right decision there united states has been accused in the past the being a cowboy too overreacting to the situation particularly in the middle east and i think that particularly with the advice given by his counselors and by congress he actually is showing a policy of restraint i think he recognizes that iran is not going anywhere it will be there to morrow if he wants to attack the president himself has said he's not in a rush but trump still faces a dilemma if he doesn't react to iranian provocations like the drones being shot down his threats might not be taken seriously and if he does start

a war he risks breaking his campaign promise of keeping the u.s. out of new conflicts. well i meant the soaring tensions between the u.s. and iran global leaders have been calling for calm german chancellor angela merkel told a religious gathering that a peaceful resolution has to be pursued with the greatest urgency macko pledged to do all she can to help resolve the crisis diplomatically. the front runner to be the next british prime minister boris johnson is expected to attend hustings for the leadership of his conservative party today but it's personal life that's in the spotlight police were called to the home he shares with his partner after neighbors heard screaming shouting and banging johnson hasn't spoken about the incident and neither he nor his girlfriend carrie simmons have issued a calm. today johnson will join the other leadership candidate foreign secretary jeremy hunt as both men step up their campaigns to be the next
3:05 pm
prime minister standing by as correspondent shylock applauds in london shall i say welcome is this incident likely to have an effect on johnson's campaign. well this really couldn't come at a worse time for the 2nd part of this leadership race has just started and there isn't a let the recording of the conversation between his partner and him when his partner accuses him of being spoiled and having no respect for money and of course it makes some people here in the u.k. question johnson's character but really it is not up to the people it is up to the membership base of the tory party 160000 members to be exact they are going to vote for boris johnson or jeremy hunt in the end and amongst those members members. is overwhelmingly favor it overwhelmingly supported he really is the front runner
3:06 pm
and the favorite they've been waiting to vote for him for almost 3 years now and we've been hearing some of those members saying today look this was a private conversation between the patna and boris johnson and should have never made it into the press so i doubt that this incident will have any effect starting today or as john said and the other conservative candidate jeremy hunt will face off in a series of discussion events across the country what can we expect. well the foreign secretary and the former foreign secretary will go head to head today and they will do this on 16 occasions throughout the country and the next week's so-called hustings additions in front of the tory membership no media questions are allowed so we can expect a heated debate but a rather let's say a friendly exchange and then the members will finally vote on the last 2 candidates and by the week of july 22nd we will know who becomes the conservative leader and
3:07 pm
thereby the new prime minister of the u.k. and were he to become the next prime minister johnson has vowed to leave the e.u. by october 31st no matter what how realistic is this promise. well exactly it doesn't look like boris johnson could get a withdrawal agreement through parliament in that short period of time so that means the u.k. would have to leave with a no deal under a no deal scenario with potentially catastrophic consequences for the economy johnson has said he is going to do so even against the will of the u.k. parliament the problem with boris johnson is he has been flip flopping on issues and the pos he is known to be a political opportunist and we just don't know what he's going to do he has also made a range of domestic promises for example easing takes ations for us here in the u.k. so all these promises we just don't know how they are going to turn out and this is the big worry this uncertainty of what

a boris johnson prime minister might look like thank you. now to some of the other stories making news around the world the people of as dumble are preparing to go to the polls tomorrow in a rerun of the city's mayoral election that was the knowledge in may polls show be mentally ill or in the ruling party again trailing akram. of the opposition c.h.p. and i'm a little one the initial vote in march which was then scrapped following alleged irregularities. chinese president xi jinping has left pyongyang after a 2 day state visit to north korea the country's leader kim jong only attended to see an officer money for a chief and his wife a highly symbolic visit was the 1st by a chinese leader and 14 years the 2 countries agreed to strengthen collaboration on major internal and external policies. donald trump is facing new

sexual misconduct allegations new york based columnist carroll's as trump pinned her against the wall of a dressing room in a manhattan department store in the mid 1990 s. where he sexually assaulted her allegations are from her forthcoming book and excerpts of which have been published in new york magazine has denied the accusations. at least 7 people were killed in cambodia when a building under construction in the city of seattle with bill suddenly collapsed overnight it's feared more people could be worried in the rubble a local official said workers were using the unfinished structure as their sleeping quarters. spain supreme court has ruled that 5 men who attacked a teenage girl will guilty of rape and not the lesser crime of sexual abuse the case has sparked mass protests across spain over what many saw as the lenient treatment of the 5 men women's rights groups and the government have welcomed the
3:10 pm
ruling. of the court do you believe demonstrators saw the verdict as a step forward for all women in spain. the supreme court overturned a ruling that many across spain had seen as far too lenient no guess but i thought the next i think the decision is correct but it's not enough 3 years to admit it's rape and not sexual abuse i really think that decision has been influenced a lot by feminism and the protests which have taken place almost every day in the streets you know. 5 men known as the wolf pack had been convicted of the lesser crime of sexual abuse after subduing a young woman and video recording nonconsensual sex they shared this video on their whatsapp group which they called the pack where they had also allegedly discussed plans to rape women and their prior conviction caused outrage across spain. under spanish law the men could not be convicted of rape because there was no evidence the men use physical violence to subdue their victim. now this verdict

could help change the way sexual offenses are convicted and spent spanish acting vice president carmen calvert tweeted that the ruling of the supreme court on the wolfpack case recognizes the credibility of the victim and is in line with the government's proposal to change the law. before the men's defense lawyer objected that the trial had been influenced by public opinion. that i feel that for most of the society at large and pass judgment on the events dictating a condom need to re sentence. and since then everything has snowballed it's made it practically impossible to have any judicial outcome that does not involve a condom a 3 sentence. i'm going to plea that if the 5 men will begin serving their sentences immediately. to sports now and the women's world cup in france excitement is building with germany kicking off the round of 16 against nigeria
3:12 pm
tonight here in the studio to discuss all the latest news from the world cup is dave reneke dave what can we expect of this this clash tonight germany versus nigeria it should be an exciting game i think germany are one of the quiet favorites for the entire world cup so they're also favorites for this match they've got a really compelling mixture of talented veterans but also young and hungry players who are seen in the group stage just how balance their team is actually on a 15 match undefeated streak which is quite impressive and they have 5 different goal scorers in the tournament so far they want all 3 of their group stage matches and didn't even give up a goal so that's really been quite impressive and although they're not always in the discussion of a potential team to win it all i think they're proving they should be up there and my jury a will obviously push back but i think it's going to be a bit of a long shot another one of the favorites is playing tonight australia what can we expect of their match against norway australia is another really strong team but
3:13 pm
they lack the balance that germany has so their attack is really strong they're led by sam kerr who has been phenomenal in this tournament she's already scored 5 goals for which she scored against jamaica alone so she's always going to be a threat their defense on the other hand don't really have the power they're attacked or have any stars like her so i think norway is going to be a tough task for them it's going to be a much harder to predict match than the game between germany and nigeria because on a good day i think norway are really capable of kind of mixing it up with anybody and don't get pushed around too much so that that is what i'm i'm really looking forward to an exciting day today at the women's world com dave browning sports thank you very much. and touring rocker made jagger's swaggered back on stage last night after undergoing heart surgery and april the rolling stones front
