i think i was successful all we can be the generation that ends it. malaria must die so millions can live. this is d.w. news asia coming up on our show today the many faces of hong kong's protests we take a look at how the city is rallying behind guerrilla tactics and satire to make sure their voices are heard. also coming up a long shadow on thailand's military junta could the thai government be harassing and killing exiled dissidents abroad we have the story of a group of tigers ition to laos who are afraid for their lives. cooling ducks don't be fooled this is a fierce competition we'll take you to singapore's bird song contest.
6:31 pm
i'm sorry so much gonda thank you for joining us on v.w. news asia now we start with the ongoing protests in hong kong organizers say they're planning another big rally on wednesday just ahead of the g. 20 summit that will take place in japan later this week that they want to get world leaders attention china's region paying he will be attending the summit but beijing says the ongoing protests in hong kong will not be discussed now more than a 1000000 people have taken to the streets this month you might have seen these dramatic pictures there demanding that the territory's leader carry lamb fully withdraw a controversial extradition bill and that she stepped down lamb has suspended the proposal but she has not scrapped it completely the legislation would allow extradition from hong kong to mainland china un human rights chief michel bash
6:32 pm
alive has weighed in on the hong kong protests here's what she had to say. in hong kong i commend the sound decision although 42 years to delay passage of the bill regarding extradition in response to the massive display of civic activism by a large proportion of the relation i encourage the old fogies to console rolled lead before passing more amending this or any other religiously the protesters have had to use all sorts of tactics to rally support and keep the movement going and. has been looking into some of those tactics force he joins us here in a studio tell us more about how protesters have been able to keep up this incredible momentum well they have now adopted a new strategy it's called the water and i actually did phrase comes from the very famous washoe our star bruce lee i'm sure i don't know for sure yet and so he said while he was explaining how to best fight an enemy he said you must be shapeless formless like water now i should explain probably should explain how what does it
6:33 pm
mean by having a shapeless protests and so it's like this because big protests have shape and so instead of they want to date they are now the protests allow smaller and scattered they pop up suddenly and so in that way they are shapeless and the aim is to cripple the government operations by a small group of people always blocking the entrance and things like that and also it's just like a guerrilla warfare to them now the big it's not like big protests are bad it's not like they're out but it's just takes a lot of energy to organize that to call for that so that's why they are using this strategy to keep up that momentum and it seems to be pretty effective so far what are some of the other strategies that they're using the other strategy is to sing him now you may think about well i'm i'm talking nonsense but no i'm not i'm serious so that i'm actually although just 10 percent of the whole population in hong kong are christians to him has become the protests and it can be heard
6:34 pm
everywhere well we'll have a listen 1st and i'll explain it to you later. now you probably know the name of the song already saying hello maria to the large purchased also saying that because religious gathering like a normal purchase don't have to be registered they can just gather together it's an exemption really so because the protests are very spontaneous nowadays as i've just explained that's why they want to they are singing to him to protect themselves to prevent themselves from being charged by the police and also a lot of protest as the saying that police have become sort of evil. because they use excessive force to crack down on the protests and that's and so that's why they
6:35 pm
are singing a hymn to purify this soul that's not a serious method is that to purify their police souls well of course they're not serious but in many cases like this that it's just like it hong kong style of humor really. of course this is a very serious situation for the hong kong people but that humor has never really been far away so let me illustrate that by mentioning another creative strategy created by the young protesters to pressure on the government so and. they wanted to create some means for the elderly people to draw their support for example because a lot of elderly people they're glued to their phones nowadays they use whatsapp a lot the share their they share files and messages there and they also just like young people they have their own names and i have to say that many of them do not but very morden if you remember the word. microsoft word and windows $98.00
6:36 pm
that's exactly how it would look like the words look like that and in many cases there will be a lotus flower in the background and so the protest is they actually create the means in this kind of style so that they can draw the attention of the other older generation and of course that's just 20 percent of seriousness and 80 percent is just all right giving is actually looking to the tactics behind the hong kong protests thank you so much. now on new year's eve last year police pulled out 2 bodies from the mekong river on the tieless border they had been gutted and stuffed with concrete the idea was to make the bodies sink and make the crime disappear but both were identified they were friends of thai descent so i charged on what anonymous are the anti-monarchy

activist and military opponent has himself been missing from laos since last december these are just a few in a series of disappearances and deaths in southeast asia the targets are exiled opponents of the time military and march human rights watch says threats are at a new high now one of those on the receiving end is the protest band they are living in laos and they're worried that they are next on the head list. it looks and sounds like a happy sing along but the members of fiat are far from relaxed the band fled to laos out of fear that be arrested for publishing songs that criticize thailand's 2 pillars of power the monarchy and the military. here gunslinger yami mocks the military for arresting street vendors who sold red buckets the color deemed anti establishment the ban believes videos like this one have put a target on their back. we have to live from

a role in the disappearances and deaths but yami and bandmates are convinced that someone is seeking extrajudicial but you should hear. from a whole lot mick when he does how can you ask the syud he shouldn't punish those who think differently by killing them you should be able to choose what kind of society you want to live in what kind of society we want it to be according to each of our own ideals we don't have because when we got that back and. in a statement to d.w. fire and said they would continue to fight for freedom of expression and thailand even if it means living in fear. or as we heard thai authorities have denied playing a role in the disappearances and deaths we spoke to catherine gerson a thailand campaigner for amnesty international and i asked her if the military junta really can be tied to these incidents. it's very hard to say who is
6:40 pm
responsible for these disappearances in cannons and that's why. independent investigation has to take place and then we haven't seen any news coming out. and you suspect you have a trojan is being identified we also have to say that these are individuals among those who disappeared or individuals. have been explicitly who shingle merit . the link can be no coincidence and it is it is necessary. all of these not. to do that up to and i want to happen to these individuals to singapore and the competition that draws and bird lovers across the region as a contrast probably unlike anything you've seen before zebra dogs tripping or singing their hearts out take a look. it's just after dawn at this sleepy park in singapore but the
