this is d.w. news live from berlin and unprecedented and unexpected meeting in north korea donald trump becomes the 1st sitting u.s. president to cross the north korean border where he shook hands with the country's leader kim jong il in the just a matter of the what if you were the result of that were you step over that line of there was a stumble over the and i'm sure you might do that i wasn't sure what i was ready to do or i don't want to think it's been great it's a historic photo op for what's being called

a handshake turkey. also coming up telling authorities arrest the skipper of a ship carrying migrants rescued in the mediterranean sea captain carbury had to find in order to stay away from italian courts now she could be facing up to 10 years in jail. and heartache for germany as the women's soccer team is knocked out of the world cup quarterfinals the 2 time winners take the lead but their dreams aren't dashed as sweden heads back to prevail 21. i'm married to evanston it's good to have you with us it's being called a historic event u.s. president donald trump has met with north korean dictator kim jong un in the demilitarized zone between north and. south korea trump shook hands with candy for
10:02 am
stepping across the line dividing the 2 koreas trump is the 1st sitting u.s. president to enter north korea he described it as a great honor kim also said it was a great moment and an expression of willingness to work towards a new future of shortly afterwards that you need or is held an impromptu news conference. trump said today's events were without precedent. this was a special home. visit or ones at the store or mall or the fact that we're meeting and i want to thank chairman kim for something else when i put out the social media notification if he didn't show up the press was going to make me look very bad so you need to be here but we've developed a great relationship and i really think that if you go back 2 and a half years and you look at what was going on prior to my becoming president it
10:03 am
was a very very bad situation a very dangerous situation for south korea for both career for the world and i think the relationship that we developed as that has been so much to so many people and it's just an honor to be with you what it was a lot of that you asked me to step over that line was prefaced over the line i thought you might do that i wasn't sure but i was ready to do it and i want to thank you it's been great great very historic they were just sitting one of the folks for the me was that he could be a very historic moment that is what it is. very being with you thank you very much . bill. well for more on this story i'm joined now by journalist bruce harrison who joins us from the south korean capital seoul. needless to say quite a historic moment donald trump the 1st serving u.s. president to step foot on north korean soil what did you make of this.
10:04 am
well 1st off its president donald trump nothing ever goes as it's expected to this was a spontaneous invitation and as fantine his invitation for a handshake that we're just hearing now lasted about 15 minutes long so much more than a handshake i'm not quite sure what they discussed we're also hearing now that. president donald trump has invited kim jong un to the white house and vice versa there are reports that condone and possibly a suggested the president trying to come to pyongyang as well so on the surface this looks fantastic for both leaders they seem to have this this growing relationship despite the stalled progress in nuclear talks and by and large at least here on the korean peninsula i think people are pondering is this a pivotal moment in the peace process and will it lead to serious change. over is
10:05 am
say you mention and this is a good relationship donald trump often talking about it even came on display no mentioning this but did you think it was obvious from their meeting today their interaction that the 2 them do really get along. i think it's hard to say if they're actually close buddies. donald trump said so he and kim jong un have something special maybe beyond just the 2 of them it's not understood by the rest of the the white house administration or perhaps other world leaders but president donald trump and kim think they connect on on some sort of wavelength both being leaders both being strong leaders i've heard him say what we saw today obviously kim jong un felt it was is interest to make this trip to the d.m.z. what exactly he wants to gain from it is a good is a big question was this for
10:06 am
a domestic audience was this for his standing in the world it's unclear but. it was miles and handshakes the underlying meetings are a bit more of difficult to try in the north. well we did hear the north korean leader kim jong un speak at his meeting with donald trump we have a clip of some of what he had to say let's have a listen but even beyond that i believe just looking at this action this is an expression of president trump's willingness to eliminate all of the unfortunate past and open a new future for tomorrow all right so some positive words there bruce said this will obviously he a boost for a king on his reputation and won it internationally definitely i mean he was already given a significant boost. when he met with president trump in singapore the 1st time he's continued to meet with world leaders including chinese president xi jinping
10:07 am
russian president vladimir putin as well as south korean president multiple times snow's no question this point that you has cured his leadership of north korea and that he has a firm place in pyongyang among an elderly now ministration that was started by is father and grandfather all to believe though when it comes down to the the peace talks it's unclear what the next steps will be like i said before president trump suggesting that kim jong un come to the white house that would be an even bigger step for north korea at the same time the critics have already come out and said look at these photos. what does this say it says that the united states has accepted north korea's defacto nuclear state a lot of defacto as a nuclear state leader of the united states holding hands with kim jong un crossing the border it's accepting all the sayings of previous u.s. administrations have tried to distance and have tried to prevent frankly and president trump doesn't necessarily seem to embrace it but seems to think his top
10:08 am
down diplomatic approach is the right way to go about it is wrong it could be very bad for the u.s. government all right so great p.r. from both of them as you point out some critics saying this is nothing more than political theater ultimately the goal for the u.s. for donald trump is the complete denuclearization of the korean peninsula how likely is that despite all these photo ops. once again uncertainties at this time i think a lot of people are more optimistic now because this does appear to be a step in the right direction this fight what happened to annoy president trump really hyped up that meeting in vietnam and then they sat down to table and they were on complete opposite sides as far as moving the the the nuclear issue along north korea wanting sanctions really the u.s. taking a hard line position i think that kim thought was softening on and that's unless
10:09 am
you give up your nuclear weapons up front there's not going to be any sanctions easing even though they've met at the border even though it's a very symbolic location and even though it's a historic moment for the u.s. president to step foot in this anime country despite all that we don't know any of the finer details about what's going on with the nuclear talks what possibly could the u.s. do to encourage north korea to give up its weapons what could north korea do further to encourage the united states to ease up on its economy north korea frankly thinks it's already done enough on the nuclear weapons front and now it's the u.s. is trying to act. journalist chris harrison in the south korean capital seoul we thank you for that. now italian police have arrested the captain of a migrant rescue ship after it entered the port of london do so without permission cairo leverett cattle was detained for refusing to obey a military vessel
10:10 am
a crime for which he could face up to 10 years in prison. it's the end of the mediterranean or to see. finally migrants from sea watch 3 set foot on italian soil. a few i was earlier. the 31 year old german captain of the rescue ship was arrested supporters had gathered in the harbor but also opponents. that our country is being overrun israelis being overrun by them don't let the captain get away otherwise it's the end of the world you must tongue cover now. we've got. those on board see watch 3 languished for more than 2 weeks. several had to be evacuated for medical reasons. briquettes declared a state of emergency but the italian government continued to refuse permission to
10:11 am
enter lampedusa the nearest port. before we're still waiting for a solution which unfortunately hasn't materialized that's why i've decided to dock in the pores which is quite empty at night gets caught enough by us. the surprise maneuver was a success but sea watch 3 bumped into a small police boat while docking italy's interior minister material salvini from the right wing populist leg of party accuse the captain of aggression. christer will this is a criminal act a war like that way she was arrested and is now under house arrest on lampedusa now the italian traditionary has 48 hours to decide where they're sure remain under a. rest or not girlie and i would know. corona ricketson now faces 3 to 10 years in jail she's accused of resisting the commands of a military ship it's still unclear what will happen to the migrants several

european countries including germany have offered to take them in. to force now and germany are out of the women's soccer world cup after a tie to one defeat by sweden in the quarterfinals and expand from the dillies 4th this year to take it through it hello to you next though the german fans certainly were not expecting this to happen where they no i don't think anyone was to be honest germany were the favorites going into the much they had conceded a goal and yet there was some strange decisions from germany's coach martina voss tekken book she left her star creative midfielder that jennifer matched on the bench and saw her strike in midfield and so their creativity left as a result and swayed and they deserve this they played very well though very organized and they had going through the semifinals in germany out big disaster for germany but let's take a look at the action and see how it panned out. the german women lined up for a shot at the world cup semifinal in the absence of jennifer matters shaan but her

young teammates withstood scorching french heat and an early swedish onslaught to take the lead after 15 minutes one nil to germany. being a muggle with her 2nd goal of the tournament and one of the best in france so far 6 minutes later however the swedish women used the direct route to find an equaliser a mistake by germany at the back and sophia jakobsen school was one all of the break yacob sent ashamed her role as the most dangerous forward on the pitch in the 2nd tough she was involved in a well constructed build up before stina black stimulus netted sweden 2nd to give her side a crucial lead was germany had plenty of time to find the level but despite some close calls in the dying minutes the 2 time world cup winners are heading home. and sweet a marching on to the semifinal. well so how disappointed will germany be
10:14 am
hugely disappointing i mean this is the 2nd time the go to in the quarter finals in 2 years after the euro 2017 disappointment and it also means they'll miss the olympics in tokyo next year which is really quite a blow for germany's development as a football nation they do have young players coming through so the fraught future is quite bright but this is a huge blow especially miss the olympics it's not going to be easy for them over the next few years all right so now sweden will play the netherlands how did they get through yes so this was a very tough match played in stifling conditions it was like 33 degrees players had to stop for numerous water breaks but we have the goals coming up here and. made them a she was the one that scored open the scoring in the 2nd half after a loss for a kick sent into the box and then stephanie van de graaff she doubled the lead later on and it was a 2 no win for the netherlands italy they battled hard but i think the conditions kind of made the match a bit hard to get through another lens of through the semifinals and they have now
