has never happened before an american president stepping foot in north korea crossing a line that has divided the peninsula for nearly 70 years trump said he did not know until the very last moment whether the meeting would take place. this point pan shake is all it was supposed to be when trump made his surprise off while at the g 20 summit in osaka. but then there was more kim said he hoped the moment would signal and new beginning after the breakdown of nuclear talks in february. even going dutch it once was what it was i believe that just looking at this auction is an expression of his willingness to eliminate all the unfortunate past and open a new future. on the markets but. then trump went further saying he would invite him to the us and the white house. minutes later at

a joint news conference he said it was the personal friendship between the 2 leaders that helped to diffuse tension you can talk to a great relationship i really think that if you go back to what i have years and you look at what was going on prior to my becoming president it was a very very bad situation a very dangerous situation for south korea's a good career for the world. in the end what was supposed to be a brief encounter turned into a 15 minute meeting also involving the president of south korea kim and trump have agreed to start working talks on pyongyang's nuclear weapons but it is unclear whether down the line this will remain any more than a photo op for a president keen to leave a nothing legacy here or you're here tens of thousands of protesters are taking to the streets in sudan today calling for a civilian rule nearly 3 months after the army forced out long ruling autocrat.
7:04 pm
talks between the 2 sides over a power sharing agreement collapsed earlier this month when she curity forces violently broke up a protest camp in khartoum authorities said $61.00 people across the country were killed during the unrest that followed but protest organizers and external observers estimate that the number of deaths is well over 100. joining us now from nairobi is mohammed el nyima pseudonym the sudanese activist mohammad thanks for joining us you left khartoum we should say at the beginning of the month after the violent crackdown against protesters and you were in the crowd on june 3rd when the military opened fire today's demonstration is the biggest since that day what goes through your mind as you watch this protest evolve today. just for clarification i was not there at during the camp but i was there during the neighborhood protests on the day and that was sort of a day of despair and many people had anticipated that we would be cleared out of
7:05 pm
the occupation which i was attending quite often but we didn't expect the extent of the violence. it was clear that the transitional military council was trying to make us afraid and so today seeing people go out in the streets in complete defiance and as we speak right now marching towards the presidential palace is extremely heartwarming what's the situation on the ground today essentially what are people saying. so people today are feeling a sense of hope that they haven't felt in a long time most of the key protests have been set on symbolic dates so the day that we all went in front of the military headquarters in april 6th which is the anniversary of the 1985 revolution and today in the 30th of june is the day when the regime took power claiming that it was sort of rescuing the people but today people are enthusiastic enough to believe that we might be able to win. do you fear
7:06 pm
another violent crackdown. well the professionals association released a statement recently on social media saying that we have to anticipate every possible scenario. hopefully international pressure will prevent a violent crackdown by international pressure has failed us in the past but no matter what happens this revolution is not just an event it's a process and today is a testament to the fact that people are not going to give up until they see a civilian government we should point out that these demonstrations came amid a week long standoff between the ruling military council and protest leaders like yourself what would you like to see happen when this is all will. well what we would like to happen with since the massacre of june 3rd the transitional military council has completely. destroyed any illusions that it has any legitimacy
7:07 pm
whatsoever to be in a transitionary period hopefully the protest leaders under the banner of the forces of freedom and change negotiate a settlement where we see a complete civilian government and that we avoid any sort of soft landing approach to the revolution so that the deepest aspirations of the revolutionaries on the ground. are not filled but also hopefully we start to see changes in the way the international community responds to popular protests across the world and we feel that the united arab emirates saudi arabia counter-revolutionary egypt. in addition to your european union which provides funds and supports the rapid support for system migration we see all of these things as sort of a testament to what international states really do how they really do approach national revolts like these and sit around and we would hope that in the future beyond just statements of concern we see actual diplomacy to prevent massacres like
