this is v.w. news live from berlin tonight violent clashes in hong kong as protesters stormed the seat of government police fired tear gas at pro-democracy demonstrators forcing them to evacuate the city's government building which they had occupied just hours earlier hong kong's chief executive kerry lamb has condemned the violence of the protesters also coming up for the 1st time to run violates the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal its foreign minister says iran has the right to change course the u.s.
11:01 pm
says it will not change its course of maximum pressure on tehran. i'm burnt off it's good to have you with us tonight police in hong kong have finally retaken control of the legislative council building but only hours after protesters had stormed and occupied the main chamber police moved into the building after clearing the streets of anti government protests with tear gas late in the night they were then able to enter the main chamber without resistance the sharp escalation in violence comes on the 22nd anniversary of the former british colonies return to china. or just in the last hour hong kong's embattled leader kerry lamb gave a highly anticipated statement in a press conference. some suggested that she may nation instead she condemned the

violence that rocked the city today she called for society to return to normal as soon as possible just not true to say has not responded. we have not responded to every team on and. asked the. good pieces now 1st of all if the calls off the tensions that we have seen is a build so amend the future. and on the 15th of june i have announced this expansion of the bill. and subsequently we have explained and elaborated by suspending the bill at this point in time with no timetable and no plan to bring that debate of the bill in the legislative council the bill will expire or the bill will die in july 2020 when the current term expires that
11:03 pm
is a very positive response. all right that was curious i am speaking at around 4 am in the morning in hong kong to talk about that i'm joined by my colleague sherri chan here at the main table so let's talk a little bit about what we just heard from carrie lim for so what she's speaking of 4 am and she says if this is the result of the extradition bill i've suspended it but it's not about just about the extradition bill and it seems that you know curie limb doesn't get that yeah you're right it's not just about their system failed but also it's about that she rejected to withdraw it totally and she just that repeatedly it has been suspended and that's actually why the protests this is so angry because they just wanted to be withdrawn and she just wasn't doing it and also there are lots of other 3 months from the protests as for example for her to resign fall to take back the houses that she put on the previous
11:04 pm
protests is that they riotous yet she's not resigning and there were some people saying that they expected that to happen tonight what does this tell was the tell was that she really does have still have the support of xi jinping and beijing behind her i think at this point if she is not resigning after 3 weeks off peaceful phylum protests. it's a possible that she still had some support from the chinese government and this is not the way off this tense moment for her to resign what do you make of what we saw this evening with the police being nowhere to be found when the protesters moved into the main legislative building and then into the main chamber and were able to take control of it for several hours was that was that a planned response by the police do you think i think this over reasons that they
11:05 pm
think they says a fault because the police has been accused of. in the previous protests so it's kind of like. they have for the international community for the international media . like we're not doing anything right now so we just let you go inside and then secondly also people said that this is a strategy that's used by the police because usually in hong kong when. they see pictures or images of vandalism of destruction then they would tend not to support the protests so it might be one of the ways they want to try to drive away the support for the support in the population for the demonstrators can we talk about the demonstrators being unified i mean the people who were inside that chamber tonight ransacking the place. were they there with the support of all of those people on the beat not a secular support i have seen a lot of comments saying that they don't have grave with violence exactly but then
11:06 pm
they also a lot of people saying that even if we don't agree and we understand why you're doing it because these protesters they were saying that they have used many means like peaceful protests and everything and this is the last thing that they can do and where does it go from here. now they are also calling for people to all wept like tomorrow to show support for these protesters today so there might be the case that you know we will see is certainly will be a monday that people won't forget for a long time that's for sure thanks very much. but here are some of the other stories now that are making headlines around the world a car bombing and gun battle in the afghan capital kabul have left at least 6 people dead and more than 80 others wounded the blast during rush hour targeted the afghan defense ministry before gunman battled special forces the taliban islam is militant group has claimed responsibility for the paris firefighters who battled
11:07 pm
the flames of notre dame cathedral in april have been honored by france's interior and defense ministers the cathedral spire and roof were destroyed but firefighters managed to save the build towers and many of our hundreds of firefighters arrived on the scene. within 10 minutes after the 1st alarm was sound. or tonight the white house is condemning iran's move them increase its enrichment of uranium and saying that it will continue pressuring the country to change course earlier today the un confirmed iran has broken the limit on your radium enrichment sent by the 2015 nuclear deal this is tehran's 1st major departure from the deal iranian foreign minister mohammad javad zarif has claimed that breaking the deal through limit is justified and he's accused the co signatories of failing to uphold their part of the pact the united states abandoned the agreement last year and has
11:08 pm
since reimposed sanctions on iran zarif says that tehran's moves are about defending the country's authority. but it's only by illustrating authority that we can put the us in their place during negotiations if such talks are needed. because we will never accept yielding to pressure but if someone respects us they will have our respect in return the world must talk to us with respect and not threaten iranians. are and i'm joined now by natasha she is a political scientist at the university of essex professor it's good to have you on the show so what we're looking at today a breach of the nuclear deal is this a dangerous development. what's definitely a dangerous development and i think it's something that european countries in particular the european union that had worked so hard to try to get the 20 good
11:09 pm
deal in place was hoping would not have been i think they were working really hard behind the scenes to try to creating some sort of bartering system that would enable countries to trade with iran but it wasn't really set up that way it was only set up to deal with humanitarian goods and supplies and whatever they tried to put together at the last minute using sort of creative methods that just didn't work iran said it really wasn't a feeling its needs and so now iran has put europe in a corner where there's really not that much that europe can do it can't really go against the u.s. and i don't see it going against us and doing something to really challenge the u.s. but it also has to make a stance against iran and already the u.k. has said that it's figuring out what it's going to do and that there will be consequences for this where he doesn't want to make such a strong stance that it completely leaves no option of ever returning to the deal i
11:10 pm
think they want to sort of quietly through their diplomatic channels or even overtly try to convince iran to not go too far of low levels of enrichment and so that they could somehow come back to the deal what do you make though it is their strategy here in iran increasing its uranium enrichment very demanding more from europe and certainly they know that europe probably can't do more than it's done already so what's what's in iran's engaged here. well i think there's 2 things going on i mean one of the things that you could tell from the foreign minister dr zarif statement is that iran wants to be treated with respect but that is almost more important than the results that they want to be treated. legitimately that they are tired of what they perceive to be u.s.
11:11 pm
imperialism u.s. aggression u.s. arrogance and they just won't stand for what the u.s. has just done and they're willing to do that you know regardless of whether or not that leads to some sort of positive outcome so for strategic view it would be that they're trying to put enough pressure on europe so that europe will find some way to keep the deal in place but i don't know if europe's want to be able to do that under the current u.s. administration for president time to lift that joining us from the university of essex professor as always we appreciate your insights thank you thanks for having me oh fear of unexploded munitions has hampered efforts to put out a large forest fire in northern germany the blaze broke out in woodland covering a former military training area 650 people were evacuated from their homes in the state of mecklenburg western pomerania authorities say they suspect arson. smoke as far as the eye can see. covering more than 4 square kilometers of forest
11:12 pm
this is said to be the largest fire in the northeastern german state of microblog western pomerania has ever seen. more than 1000 people have been forced to flee their homes and the residents of 3 villages have been evacuated. we have evacuated numerous villages at the moment we are doing our best to keep them safe and momenta on your chuff. we're not just talking about putting out this fire rather we're talking about protecting people's lives and livelihoods and securing the region it's dangerous work for the firefighters and not just because of the flames but also because of potential explosions this was previously a military training area and tons of bombs munition is still on site that's why firefighters are not allowed to come any closer than one kilometer to the blaze the state's interior minister is calling for federal help. this illegal stuff this
11:13 pm
wouldn't this it's federal land and the leftover munition and other issues go back many years now we're seeing the terrible result of the state can't be left alone to deal with this problem and it will lessen because of the fire is not yet been determined and authorities are not ruling out possible arson. or need to be used as of alters it is this update from the town of new pain where the fire broke out. this situation here and it dan is typical it's my if i said doing all they can have a cop is that trying to extinguish the flames but really down on the extinguish civil anymore the scale is so not stale and he's trying to contain what can be contained and protect the villages around a lot of people had to be evacuated already and several could photo and is not inside. the test of alter reporting earlier today sports news now in tennis the 1st day of wimbledon has already produced 3 big shocks 15 year old corey has
