not their real names were protesting outside the legislative council on monday when suddenly a group of young people started to attack the parliament trying to break the glass from. the time i was still struggling over whether i should leave or i should support them. i thought by the time the glass broke and the 1st protesters entered the building she had made up her mind i thought that i needed to support what they wanted today it may be wrong all right but they are still hong kong's people. most of the protesters were very young 18 year old boras also had his doubts but decided to join in. the protesters entered the building spreading graffiti calling for universal suffrage pro-democracy activists have been fighting for these demands for decades to know that was. my parents asked me if i really had to join the protests they said they had already enough out there but i said no one will stand

up if everyone thinks that way. meanwhile the city is trying to clear the remnants of the still. damage to the legislature is estimated at 1000000 euros the government has vowed to prosecute those who participated several arrests have already been made. if i told you that i'm not afraid i would be lying we may be talking about 10 years in jail but from that day until now i don't regret that i went in i just feel that i did what i needed to do a 20 moderate protesters feel that this might not have helped their cause but criticism has been limited as they say they understand the anger that surfaced. when we entered we had already lost but we felt there was nothing else we could do any more peaceful rallies have achieved nothing. the 3 are currently in hiding

as the police are stepping up their efforts to identify those involved in storming hong kong's parliament. that report from his material spending in hong kong and a short while ago he sent us this update on the situation in the city. protests are subsiding for now after monday's dramatic events but this does not mean that they are over the people are still angry and although maybe the young people are taking a rest are rethinking mass try to g.'s we're going to see them out on the streets probably next sunday there is another protest planned this afternoon we are going to see mothers coming out these mothers have grouped 3 weeks ago after the 1st clashes where the police was perceived as extremely violent justified her policies by arguing that she was like a mother to hong kong people and she would not spoil their children by giving in to
12:05 pm
all their demands these mothers are saying we are mothers too and we do not agree with you treating our children that way. african union mediators say saddam's ruling generals and opposition leaders have reached a power sharing agreement under the deal hoff civilian hof military council will rule the country for the next 3 is now protests have royal siddhanth since the ousting of longtime president omar al bashir in april opposition leaders say the new deal is a victory for them movement. celebrations in the capital khartoum as a political standoff deescalate in a gesture of peace sudan's ruling military freed more than $200.00 rebel fighters who are part of the country's opposition a step towards reconciliation one rebel leader praised their release. well i mean the image is that it shows clearly that the army and the armed forces

european union sanctions. a strong earthquake has struck southern california officials say the 6.4 magnitude tremor hit near the town of ridgecrest but could be felt in los angeles that's 200 kilometers away is the biggest quake to hit southern california since 1999. now u.s. president donald trump has led 4th of july celebrations in washington d.c. the holiday marks america's independence from british rule and is usually focused on national unity sidestepped tradition though with what he called the show of a lifetime a speech to donors flanked by military vehicles and even by his standards it was an eye catching spectacle but did the event live up to the hype of a look. although it rained on his parade president donald trump had promised quite a show including a beefed up military showing he had dubbed it
12:09 pm
a salute to america. critics didn't like tanks being part of a national holiday celebration and many had wondered whether he would use a speech to the nation to campaign for reelection next year but he stuck to a nonpartizan script as we gather this evening in the joy of freedom we remember that all share a truly extraordinary heritage together we are part of one of the greatest stories ever told the story of america there were concerted efforts to speak to the nation as a whole but most to trump speech praised america's historic achievements focusing on the past our nation's creativity ingenious lit up the lights of broadway and the sound stages of hollywood it filled the concert halls an air waves around the world with the sound of jazz opera country rock n roll and rhythm and blues it gave birth to the musical the motion picture the western the world series the
12:10 pm
super bowl the skyscraper the suspension bridge the assembly line and the mighty american automobile the show of a lifetime got some good reviews. i work for the military some of those airplanes that flew over i've actually worked on. it's a celebration of freedom i thought it was very good american focused patriotic speech avoided partisanship which was very welcome but some nonplussed. just wondering like this is not a political day per se it's just an american day and a little concerned at all to political economy whatever history lessons that we all grew up in new like i like beating a dead horse so to speak about the future where we go from here and settle where we were we know where we were i want to where we're going for a man who deferred his way out of the vietnam draft his version of the 4th of july
12:11 pm
was almost all about the mike that the u.s. military past. and present. and to talk more about this i'm joined now by having from the german council on foreign relations mr thank you thanks for joining us. what message was president trump sending to the world by showing off all of this military might he did not give a partisan speech as many have expected or feared it was a speech of unity and he was praising the american nation he was praising people who did service to the community but of course he spent most of his speech and praising the u.s. military he himself has not served but he wants to associate himself with the military because it is the one situation that is well regarded in america a lot like the media or the politics the military is strong and especially on the republican side but he also conveys an image of militarily strong america because in many of the conflicts that he is going into iran possibly china the military
12:12 pm
dominance of america is crucial and i think this was a. subtle message or not so subtle message but he also wanted to send can we presume that these 4th of july celebrations assessing the tone for trump's election campaign in a way yes because he wants to be seen as the president who who is the responsible politician for making america strong and powerful and this was the man message that in the speech that was only given to him so no today america is stronger than ever but i think in the in the campaign of course he wants to look like a statesman with the military behind him but in the campaign he will be much more competitive and he will he will be very very angry and focused on his possible opponent and absolutely now trump made a big deal of the large crowds gathered on the lincoln memorial for this event but
12:13 pm
his approval rating. remains rather low doesn't it's around 40 percent where his great it's a waste of time when you look at what important political issues on the table but it's always an issue for him just as it was in the inauguration speech i think. the message that he sent reached his own electorate through the people who supported him the fans but also a large part of the republican voters who would vote republican but not sure about him and it also served with the criticism and the anti-militarist this discussion the democratic side the democratic side or the opponents the liberals so it didn't really break the. rift between the 2 i think he is vulnerable if he's donald trump as in the beginning again erratic reliable with like the scandals the scandal following scandal that would be bad for him because it
12:14 pm
would drive away the middle ground republican voters from the voting but from from the ballot box. this is why he wants to position himself as a statesman as. the one who is in charge the one who is powerful instruments in his hands. so he doesn't want to be seen as sort of creepy. erratic erratic president that he was in the beginning of his term all right we shall see what happens in the next year having thank you from the jam council on foreign relations thanks so much thank you. now in geneva the united nations human rights chief michelle bachelet has presented a damning new report on venezuela to the human rights council based on figures provided by the venezuelan government it found that many of the nearly 7000 killings during security operations in venezuela since the start of 2018 may have
12:15 pm
been extrajudicial executions it also said that nearly 800 people remain in custody after being arbitrarily arrested and the un report found that 1500 deaths over 4 months in 20182019 work or just by a lack of hospital supplies. now since the start of the year venezuela has been caught in both an economic crisis and a political standoff between president nicolas maduro government and national assembly leader one the dura won a 2nd term in the disputed election last year and is resisting attempts to oust him by the u.s. backed opposition led by god oh earlier this year why do declared himself interim president it's a crisis that has led to mass protests and forced millions to flee at her address earlier in geneva called on the government to talk to the opposition rather than cracking down on it the report makes clear essential institutions of the rule of

law in business will have been eroded the exercise of freedom of opinion expression association family and the right to participate in public life entails the risk of reprisals and repression. a rebirth not attacks against actual or perceived political opponent and human with defenders ranging from threats and smear campaigns to arbitrary detention torture and ill treatment sexual violence killings and for disappearance my office has also documented excessive use of force in the context of security operations special action forces with market group killing familiar young men. you're watching news still to come the end of an era veterans form up by and munich stuff i and robin retires at the age of 35. but 1st to a shock poll result in germany
12:17 pm
a majority of germans don't want the country's defense minister also the funding lion to be president of the european commission a survey by german pollster and protested diem up shows just 33 percent of germans think she is the right person and would do a good job if approved for the top job a majority 56 percent say she would not make a good commission chief. i'm joined now by our political correspondent on the sparrow thomas why this skepticism about wilson a funded lion was in the fonda lion is germany's minister of defense on a such she is in charge of extremely difficult and controversial ministry this is a ministry that is but has been criticized time and time again because of the state of the forces here in germany the criticisms relate to the readiness to the capability of the armed forces on a such form the line has also been criticised although it's important to stress to
12:18 pm
some of the problems she inherited this is a role that in many cases has been described as a career killer so depending on what your position is on was it on the line you may think that she has done a good job given the circumstances or she hasn't done enough to change things in the bundesliga so that said that's one issue why germans may be skeptical about her she's also facing an investigation into spending irregularities and i think many germans are also not happy about her nomination because of the way that she was nominated in the end not having been on the ballot during the european elections if she does get the top job with that allow her to skate full of controversy at home or would it follow her to brussels do you think. i would say a bit of both in a way she will be able to escape because her roles in brussels will change she will have other priorities to deal with at the same time when you look back on her career you always have to consider what she did and what you didn't do as head of
12:19 pm
the defense ministry just as you would also look as well i did watch she achieved or didn't achieve when she led previous ministries such as the labor ministry or the family ministry let's not forget that it was rough on the lion has been the only minister since 2005 in other words since i'm going to go started chancery that has been throughout that period with i'm going to merkel so she is a politician that has enough experience at the german level and she will try to take that experience but she would also take all the controversies with her to brussels if elected by the european parliament like a now we have also been looking at 2 german voters think should be responsible for selecting the e.u. commission boss and during the european elections in may fund a lion was not a candidate for the job now there is a sense amongst many germans that government leaders made a backroom deal instead of choosing one of the candidates nominated by their parliamentary group for the commission president's job and the pollsters are asked who should choose the president of the european commission should it be the heads
12:20 pm
of government all the european parliament 21 percent feel that government should have the final say but an overwhelming majority of 71 percent say the european parliament should decide who will lead the commission. so tell us what do you make of these the think is the german seem to be opposed to deals like the one that we we saw this week on this description of a backroom deal is one of the key reasons as well where people are skeptical about all that off on the line or in particular about the nomination future head of the european commission this this idea here in germany that those backroom deals affect european legitimacy that they affect. european democracy and by the way there is something that has been backed by important political parties here in germany like the social democrats they have rejected outright was enough on the lines nomination with those arguments that i have just mentioned there's also and it's also
12:21 pm
important to stress another side of the story those who believe that the heads of government heads of state do have the rights and do have the responsibility to present those nominations after all they are themselves elected leaders and they also have responsibility such an although the european elections are european they do also have a very important national component so it's important to see what both sides of the story reveal in this particular case but this is certainly one of the reasons why people are not very convinced about was enough on the lines nomination. thomas perry thanks so much. the u.s. is tightening sanctions against cuba by hitting its state run oil shipping firm washington says it's imposing new penalties on havana because of its role in propping up venice whalers president nicolas maduro and president trump once removed from power the trump sanctions are hissing ordinary cubans who have been dealing with the consequences of the u.s. trade embargo the began nearly 60 years ago. former reach the temerity day is

a good day there's fish for dinner cuba is surrounded by water but these days the 48 year old has to stand in line for over 2 hours to buy fish. sometimes when a product is available again i call my brother or friend right away and say hey there's chicken here and i get in line. but for marie it's even more important than food is whether or not she can get her medication or her brothers both suffer from high blood pressure. we're living in a time of need that's the reality today. there was never really an excess of anything here but now even soap and toothbrushes are hard to come by staples like rice flour and beans are strictly rationed people here are lining up for chicken. older people are very often overwhelmed just recently

a woman waiting in line right in front of me collapsed cuba has been hit hard by america's sanctions cubans living in exile can send as much money back to their families now nonetheless cuba is still putting on a happy face but even the tourism industry crucial to the country is hurting cruise liner operations have been canceled and any american doing business in cuba faces possible charges back home. oh my wish trump nothing but the worst is president doesn't have feelings none. but while the sanctions right now cuban say it's because of venezuela ever since the days of hugo chavez and fidel castro these socialist nations have been economically and politically close then as well it gets doctors and support from cuba's intelligence agencies and cuba gets crude oil but venezuela is in a deep crisis and can't supply much more oil many think the u.s.

believes if cuba's economy collapses it won't be able to support venezuela. every conflict with the us is difficult because of its leading position as the world's most important market and no one would risk an argument with the us because of cuba. the bulk of. her it's a has arrived at her allocated pharmacy to pick up her medication she can only get it here in italy things were looking good but then a problem arises. out of it and i got my medication but they didn't give me what my brother needs maybe it was dr next week or i'll call the pharmacy central head office and ask if i can get it in another part of the city. the usa is power play is making life here much harder it's his brother has to eat a lot of garlic supposedly this will keep his blood pressure down but at least today there's fish to go with it. all right some football news now

and form of buy in munich when i and robin is retiring be 35 year old left the bundesliga champions in may and have been expected to finish his career back in his native netherlands but robin says injuries have taken their toll. all you in robin's final season with bae and started with a bang or goal on match day warm but as so often injury issues struck causing him to miss 27 games a key reason for restoring. in a statement robin said no doubt it's the hardest decision i've had to make in my career a decision where hearts and minds collided. after starting his career in the netherlands robin had stints with chelsea and real madrid but will be best remembered for playing over $300.00 games for byron munich in which he scored $144.00 goals and provided another 101 assists i'm since joining in 2009 he won the
