a michael thanks for joining us a magnitude 7 point one earthquake has struck southern california it hit near the city of ridgecrest some 200 kilometers northeast of los angeles it's the region's strongest earthquake in 2 decades the u.s. geological survey says the tremors were felt as far away as mexico injuries and fires have been reported but so far no fatalities aftershocks continue to rattle the area it's the latest in a series of quakes to hit california in recent days and experts are warning that more are likely to come. we have had 2 magnitude 5 aftershocks to the 7 point one the probability of another 5 in the next week is extremely high probably quite a few more magnitude 5 to come. the probability of
10:02 am
a magnitude 6 in the next. week is over 50 percent it's something probably around 60 percent and very preliminary estimate the probability of a 7 might be as high as 11 percent so all of that saying we're having a very robust sequence not a surprise it's going to continue there's no reason to think that it's going to be stopping. for more i'm joined now by daniel raydon correspondent at n.b.c. 7 in san diego by phone daniel i've lived in los angeles for 12 years and know what a terribly surreal feeling it is to sit through an earthquake tell us what you experienced during this quake. yes i thank you for having me it was around dinner time when the earthquake struck i was with a big group of people in a restaurant and the table was swaying you could feel it i was about 400 kilometers from the epicenter. but you could still very much feel that there

offered fresh talks with the opposition has ruled out further negotiations and is urging the military to abandon president maduro. god the god without their support president maduro could quickly lose his grip on power. the military parade was held to commemorate independence day but it also highlighted that most in the armed forces still seem to back then his whalers in battle president. maduro used the festivities to address the opposition saying dialogue is the way to end venezuela's political crisis don't have time to compete or stop with conspiracies stop with the plots stop with the evil stop with the plans to destabilize and harm venezuela the reason the name in the final minutes will offend is why a wants peace and work people and that's why i repeat my call for national dialogue of the was

meanwhile opposition leader one quite though was sending a defiant message with his own rallying. cry don't already ruled out further dialogue with the duros government earlier this week he cited recent reports implicating venezuela security apparatus in thousands of extra judicial killings as well this torture and other rights violations no no no not the un said it clearly venezuela now lives in a dictatorship but let the world see that's too we have not surrendered nor are we going to surrender to any dictatorship we're going to continue in the streets was. with us the fight for control of the his way the drags on millions are caught in the middle of the political turmoil is accompanied by an economic crisis that's left people short of basic goods and desperate for change.
10:07 am
we're joined now by journalists your honner mirrors who's reported extensively on venezuela your one we just saw in that report they're due and talking about the possibility of of talks with the opposition which the opposition rejects. do we see the opposition and the leadership coming together for talks anytime soon this is the never ending story in venice where we have 2 completely different versions on one side the mother really saying yes this we're going to have a 2nd round of talks on the on the other hand we have the saying no way we're not going to talk with you they take their ship so what is going to happen we'll see in the in the days to come but what i think is that maybe this kind of dogs in norway could be maybe the last chance for us live to get peacefully out of this crisis i mean we have seen months of brought this industry it's we have a huge international pressure we have u.s. sanctions we have lot of things done mother is still there sometimes

monetary fund that we're going to have then millions percent of inflation of 43 percent of unemployment so is one of the he's still there why because he has the weapons and yesterday these military parade was the message i mean he certainly still there for now but as you know with this week. the un presented a report that accused security forces of torture and extrajudicial killings in 2018 do you think this report this report will have any impact on venezuela i think. it gives a new key element to why this speech i mean he is not just the opposition on the national assembly who is denouncing these huge international institutional united nations who is saying ok look we have been as well there denouncing honduras arbitrary detentions almost 7000. since 2018 there are numbers that when we see this number we think about the date there shift of that
10:10 am
number and the seventy's and eighty's so it gives the new a strength but we cannot forget that the situation hasn't changed one can say yes about yesterday there were less people in the streets of course because this equation hasn't changed so they've just a feeble is not honestly democracy. or freedom for political prisoners is every single day finding something to eat and something somebody made sense you'll remember is thank you so much for that and you now to some of the other stories making news around the world. thousands of people have celebrated in sudan after opposition leaders and the military ruling military reach a power sharing agreement under the deal a joint military civilian council will rule the country for the next 3 years should and has been shaken by protests since the ousting of longtime president bashir in april. the greek prime minister alexis tsipras has been holding his final rally
