special new buildings surrounded by 5 museums on what is called museum island and it's there to bring all of them together quite a difficult task i have to say but i think a gentleman who's not averse to difficult times david chipperfield welcome 1st of all can you tell us a little bit about james cmon that the galleries named often jim seimone james simon was a. very important. entrepreneur and textile business very successful and he became a very generous for entrepreneurs to dave enormous amounts of money to good causes and especially to museums. he had a big collection and he famously financed the egyptian expedition the discovery of the armonica collection and the star of that is the is now for t.-t. which is in the noise museum ok we'll talk more in a minute but let's 1st have

a closer look at your brand new work named after james simo. the james seaman gallery the stunning combination of neo classical and modern architecture will serve as a new entrance point to one of the world's most important group was a trace of cultural treasures berlin's museum island. design cues for the gallery were taken from the existing 5 museums on the island. architect david shipler field conceived the 20 year long project including famously given the galleries neighbor the noise museum or new museum a new lease of life. from the jane seeman central hub visitors will have underground connections to museums on the island. we will be able to go right into the noise museum. in the future you'll

cannot physically difficult because of that the water table that the ground conditions there are absolutely awful we were building anything i mean remarks as well been building in the river from we were for a few years. but also as you say the historical restrictions the importance of the surrounding buildings i mean we were coming on to a very. pre-determined stage. of the sanaa graffiti the incredible snow graffiti of the 19th century. museums was clearly something we had to think about very very seriously and therefore the fitting into this preexisting architecture was clearly one of the biggest costs and also i mean also another. it seems like difficult toss has to fulfill many titles i mean it's not just

a visitor's center it is has to be many things. i think that's one of the that was one of the exciting and difficult things of of the project was to understand what it was is not another museum it's a collection of different. concerns and requirements that the museum on the needs primarily it's an orientation in the assembly place for the larger visitor groups but it's also a connector if it connects you into the sort of museum tor and that's very much directed to expanding visitor. groups and along with the facilities of bathrooms cloakrooms coffee shop and things like that . but as well as that i think the project the building. is a bridge to the city in
