point one magnitude tremor sent people scrambling out onto the streets of the city in fear phone and while its connections were also knocked on while witness called the quake strong but fortunately not very long a 2nd tremor was phased 40 minutes later nobody yet about the damage of possible injuries but as i mentioned there was in athens of the least one aftershock which was cool. during an interview with doris fun an antique on a samba i literally saw my a very old. you know how things were right and last. night we have another we have another tremor right now ok so stay safe until you get a continue but if you leave it and please don't leave yet i understand i have a door open and i'm about to jump out at any moment. well that was because i was
3:03 pm
talking to me a short while ago she now joins me live from athens hope you'll find share with us what you've been going through in the past hour as. well yeah it has been a horrifying experience here possibly one of the strongest quake that hit app and definitely one of the strongest quake i have witnessed and i have gone through many quite here quite are quite common in greece. the intensity of this quake was it was not just the issue that was the generation of a and i remember recalling myself why a king and thinking that it would be over within a couple of seconds as is usually the case but instead it was intensifying and the strength of grit was just increasing as well want to punch at some point i thought that this was the big one. and we may have not survived it but torch and
3:04 pm
i believe it was overwork we've had several several coats tremor pain. the quake experts are telling us and that their initial is that this big quake may have been to be the primary one. and they have released much about energy but we are they have are warning that many aftershocks will be continuing and to have been able to a gotten see has there been any damage what are you kidding because the bank this earthquake affected the whole of southern greece. absolutely for starters because there was a great deal of panic and i might have scratched myself but thousands of people. in greece just jumped out into the streets an accident korea many people were caught in that can elevate could there were tourists to accept and work at that

time and in use e.m.c. one of them a pregnant toll roads had been injured by plaster that came calling down from the wall but that means the end from the rooftop about to be empty. there was a great deal of panic in another central location within the heart of africa and it was an old building that just came crumbling down crashing onto cars that were parked near it but all together. 9 there is no major damage is so far off we understand that got have been several people who have been injured that make it but no no one seriously but crews are surveying the ground there's a military helicopter a that is dug by the area from the air and of course there will be engineers state engineers that will be taking to the quake hit regions to says

a building. down to cause some of the thank you very much for that to tell nicholas quick in athens and do sit stay safe please. and german chancellor angela merkel has been commenting on a range of issues that are and in summer press conference here in berlin in addition to questions about our health and both foreign and domestic policy issues michael was also asked about climate change one reporter wanted to know about what impact the climate activists gretta to unberth and her fridays for future movement were having let's take a listen to her remarks about the young activist. walkley thought even before grettir came on the scene we had decided on a climate protection law on substance could we do a great job of mcgregor and other young people pointed out that it has to do with their lives. and that they will live longer than us.
3:07 pm
and so that moved us to act more swiftly. on achieve political energy and we should know was at that press conference with angela merkel and she's with me in the studio now welcome michele or i'm going to america put a very strong focus on climate change at the start of her remarks to the press conference why was that while she was also asked about it i mean it is friday and almost within hearing distance the next fights for future demonstrations were going on and in the past she has been on the record of at least paying credits to giving some credit to the hardest for future movement she of course knows that she herself as environment back in 1995 that's how long it is ago about climate change is a very pressing issue and germany not being able to fulfill its own commitments and still debating without a concrete outcome so far within the own governing coalition in 2019 is a pretty poor showing so i think this was her way of admitting that they will need to move fast and that's also what we see when we look at the polling that's the
3:08 pm
green party that tackles climate change is doing indeed very well and edging ever closer to the cd you know a lot of questions on the foreign policy of are asked at this press conference what struck you most. yes it was very interesting that on iran which is an issue where germany took a lot of credit for getting this so-called iran nuclear deal the j.c. signed and the americans of course leaving it means that this whole thing could fall apart there she was out of whether there was an expectation of why iran should still stick to something that the americans are leaving and she said that it would be a positive sign a sign of confidence was the international community that's what can i say and not a very hands on. also throwing her weight behind the french president emmanuel mccall is efforts to get the americans in the rain ians around the table shows that germany has lost some clout there is not a big player in resolving or at least freezing what is currently
3:09 pm
a potential standoff between the united states and iran bring that right and she was also asked about donald trump yes and this was very interesting it was a very last question and she was asked head on whether she condemned whether the comment the racist comments towards his own congresswoman let's have a look at that statement i reject trump's comments and stand in solidarity with the congresswoman he attacked. that's how brief it was and it was very straight and i think this is an interesting comment to hear from her she simply hunt reacted to it because she had been asked straight on and i think this might potentially prove a bit of a tricky point when she next deals with us and their response of a film indecisive let's talk about a hand she's on so this question many times about her health but the questions don't seem to end this 1st take a listen to what she said today. i can
3:10 pm
function and secondly as a human being you know what i am also personally very interested in my health has really. done after all as already mentioned in 2021 my political work will be finished. but i hope life will then go on and i would like to live it in good health didn't get. myself in. we have to say she's looking really didn't really good health but what people dissatisfied with her on for well they got pretty much of repetition of what she had said before she didn't sound very dynamic did she but she doesn't sound very dynamic at the best of times i have to say the german public we've seen some polling that feels that it is indeed a private affair but of course there are concerns still underneath the surface that she might not be able to hold out but the big question is how much longer does she
3:11 pm
have to hold out as german chancellor or remain in that office officially until 2021 that's what she's committed herself to that's what she feels very comfortable confident she will be able to manage as well but we might well see and i dare say it's more likely that we will see her government coalition with the social democrats fall apart before then you know how did she seem to you all sort of personal question at this press conference tell us about that yes i mean this is also the chance to get a bit of more background out of her and also on the record so i also what kind of qualities she thought one needs to be german chancellor after almost one a half decades and this is what i got out of. all the most money. yes you need to have realistic optimism. and joy in what you're doing why don't seem this month and also a willingness to always reevaluating new situations in my opinion the most important thing is always a healthy curiosity about people in monoid kulish of mention. now also asked
3:12 pm
whether she felt she need different qualities since donald trump is u.s. president and she straight out said no so there you go that's her advice on any man or woman out there who wants to come to her chance in the future we should look up to the w.c. political editor as a tool to you. phil merkel adding her voice to the international condemnation of president trump's attacks on this group of non white democratic congresswoman trying appears to be trying to distance himself now from the fallout of his repeated taunts specially those directed at the somali born congresswoman omar and that's after his supporters were chanting center back at a rally in north carolina. he stepped out confidence and in no mood to back down donald trump was heavily criticized for his racist tweets against 4

democratic congress women but he's doubled down on his comments suggesting they should leave the country. the suggestion for the hate filled extremists who are constantly trying to tear our country down they never ever do think it isn't that's why i say if they don't like it a little leaves little league i. love it i don't believe it. and then this from his supporters. here are the targets of trump's attacks 3 of the 4 women were actually born in the u.s. you know nomar is a somali refugee naturalized as a u.s. citizen the women say trump is shutting down to bait based on the color of their skin. because i criticize the president i should be deployed i want to remind people that this is what this president and his supporters have turned our country
3:14 pm
that is supposed to be a country if we allow democratic debate this president put millions of americans in danger and that's named his rhetoric is in danger of being. lots of people this is not just about. threats to individual members of congress. it's not the 1st time trump has used such divisive language to appeal to his base it helps him win the presidency in 2016 and he wants to win again republicans have defended 3 mouths. i don't think it's racist to say was it race is this a love it or leave it i don't think a somali refugee embracing would not have been asked to go back. on everybody from somalia to go back. with his comments analysts say trump is firing up his supporters and allowing anti immigrant sentiments to become mainstream. i

don't think for them that will be the moment when we answer whether we're spy or be a whole lot better or whether we want to go but who in effect make america. i. this is an unprecedented time in the united states with the president showing no sign of letting up on his racist rhetoric. you're watching the news coming up ahead tensions in the persian gulf the u.s. claims one of its warships has shot down an iranian drone but iran's foreign minister says all of this jones on accounted for. but 1st let me bring you up to date with some other stories making news around the wasn't the top court of the netherlands as up as a ruling that found the dock state partly liable for the deaths of 350 boston

a boy has to spend almost $5000000000.00 compensating airlines that have been affected by the grounding of 737 max the announcement comes a week before the company is due to reveal its quarterly results and there's still no firm timetable to bring the planes back into service it's the company's best selling plane and a model that's become synonymous with tragedy regulators granted the 737 marks in march after the deaths of $346.00 people in 2 crashes blamed on faulty software the move led to the cancellation of thousands of flights for which boeing is now counting the cost the company set aside 4900000000 dollars to compensate airlines and their customers and has warned investors to expect profits to plunge as a result the announcement comes just days after the u.s.
3:20 pm
house of representatives held a hearing on aviation safety among those who testified was poor and who lost his wife and 3 children in the ethiopian airlines crash in march born should not be allowed to act like an investment company extracting world to supercharge shareholder returns at the expense of safety and quality their leadership should change in favor of the forecasts earlier this month the plane maker announced it would be creating a $100000000.00 fund to support the families and communities of the crash victims the figure is around the same as the list price of a single 737 marks boeing says it expects the model to be back in the air by the end of the year. but the shadows of the ill fated 737 marks will be cast far longer than brass dozens of lawsuits are still pending and boeing's reputation for safety may have been tarnished forever. now for more on this story for my great pleasure
3:21 pm
to welcome my colleague monica jones from the business desk hi monica so this whole issue with boeing it's not only damaged its reputation but also its hurting its bottom lines. these are not good times for boeing no doubt about that and it sounds very dramatic and as we just heard the report i mean the 737 max was or still is boeing's best selling aircraft and it's been grounded since march so that's certainly not good for business it cost the company already billions of dollars and now they also have to make sure that they remain in their customer's good books which is why they've now made available those roughly $5000000000.00 worth of compensation that they will pay out to their customers so that they sort of hold onto it but we also must remember when it comes to the bottom line boeing does not just consist of the 77 max they also have other aircraft models for example the dreamliner and korean air has just decided to upgrade its fleet by buying 30.
3:22 pm
dreamliner was that deal is worth about $10000000000.00 so money is still coming in i still expect that they'll be a drop in quarterly profits next week but how big that drop is afraid will have to wait until next week yet we have to wait and see when the quarterly results come out next week as you said but how is boeing plan to pull out of this crisis because one must feel it is a crisis for the company who to it's tricky and aviation stepping on a plane is all about trust and i for one i have to admit i mean i'm not an expert but if i had to step onto a boeing 737 even when it's allowed to be a born again i would have very very mixed feelings about it so boeing is there a very determined when it comes to damage control you know get it getting trust back. getting its credibility back and also by sort of showing that it cares that it takes its responsibilities seriously for example by setting up this $100000000.00 fund in order to compensate the victims of the families and the
3:23 pm
communities of the victims of indonesia in particularly easy opiah having said that of course $100000000.00 compared to the $5000000000.00 for the customers plus $100000000.00 is the price list for 17 $37.00 max so i think boeing can cope with with the cost of that fund and then oh don't let go of the 737 max all together they're determined to fix that software problem and they're still building they're still building 737 every week 42 of them because they want to be ready that once the authorities give the ok that they can actually deliver because they need it the aviation industry needs craft passenger numbers are climbing rapidly and companies like ryan air a very loyal customer of boeing already announced this week that they are forced to cut down on some of the destinations that they offer simply because they don't have the airplane so they'll be ready to take the 737 once it's airborne again ok we
3:24 pm
