the nazi government 75 years ago today. and it's exactly 50 years since man 1st walked on the moon but. millions believe the moon landings were faked to look at conspiracy theory stewing the rounds on social media. thanks for joining us iran is defying growing international pressure to release a british oil tanker it detained in the strait of hormuz the vital waterway carrying a 3rd of the world's seaborne oil supply tehran says the vessel was seized after it collided with a fishing boat the british government has called it a dangerous move in germany says it's an aggravation of an already tense situation . iran's revolutionary guard sport this day not in pay to a british vessel it to team did in the streets of harmony after and every day an

oil tanker was held in. britain say it's a dangerous move but london is determined not to let the tent for tat spiral out of control. priority. continues to be to find a way to deescalate the situation. that's why i reached out to the iranian foreign minister that's why due process interpol continues we need to see the illegal seizing of a british flag that's so robust we need the ship released and we continue to be very concerned the safety of well the 23 crew members. the u.k.'s allies are also stepping up pressure on iran u.s. president donald trump wants to run to accept more concessions over its nuclear program and he says his strategy is working iran they're showing their colors going to work out very nicely arad is in big trouble right now
8:03 pm
a lot of bad things happening to them and it's very easy to straight out for it's very easy for us to make it a lot worse however trump's familiar bluster isn't going to end well on the streets of tehran and. i think trump star rakes in his comments at his own citizens the only reason for it is that his popularity has decreased and he wants to raise it with these comments that one thing i think our navy's reaction was legal there's no problem with what they did and we supported that as a. person has described the seizure as utterly unacceptable as diplomatic efforts continue in an effort to cool tensions. for some analysis let's bring in simon mabon a middle east analyst based in the u.k. simon iran's actions will no doubt be seen as provoking the u.s. and its allies is your real danger that the u.s. or others will retaliate thereby prompting a major escalation of some kind. i think that's certainly
8:04 pm
a concern that that amidst all of these growing tensions that some point there will be a retaliation and that retaliation will kick this crisis on to the next level but what we've seen so far is from from the united states the u.k. calls for a responsible. way of addressing this crisis and i guess that's the big concern that it's the stakes are so high right now that the seizure of my all time while crew folks people in washington and london going to take some kind of military action and that would be the real catalyst for things to get incredibly worse and i go. well you know as well as i do this isn't the 1st time that iran has seized an oil tanker in the strait of hormuz what kind of impact with these repeated seizures have on global oil supplies. well i think there's a political dimension to it and this is just mentioned the political dimension
8:05 pm
concerns this growing pressure that is rising in the gulf that iran and iran is facing a range of different economic and political preciously united states and others and that's your package demonstrated that's having a real sizable impact on the iranian economy and the iranian state affecting millions of people and that means that iran is having to respond in different ways internationally to try and reassert itself on the world stage and remind people that it still has a role to play in this game now that will have serious not one implications for the global economy for global oil supplies we know that the world's oil goes through the straits of hormuz on a daily basis so this is going to cause a great deal of concern a potentially great deal of disruption of target because we're going to be targets that could quite easily push of oil prices which will have a potentially incredibly serious response an impact on the world economy. thank you so much for that simon maven thank you. saudi arabia's king solomon has agreed
8:06 pm
to host u.s. forces the pentagon has confirmed the move saying it would deploy troops in saudi arabia as a deterrent against unspecified threats according to media reports $500.00 american troops will be stationed at a military airbase south of the capital riyadh the saudi defense ministry says the aim is to improve security and stability in the region. today marks the 75th anniversary of the famous briefcase plot to kill out off hitler on july 20th 1904 army colonel klaus von stauffenberg planted a bomb in the nazi headquarters where hitler was meeting with his generals the device went off and killed several of those present but hitler himself was only slightly injured often berg and several of his fellow conspirators were detained and executed once seen as traitors today they are celebrated as heroes who gave their lives in the attempt to end hitler's regime here in berlin an official

a good chance you've seen at least one person claiming the moon landings were fake you know for more on why so many people online are claiming that never happened i'm joined now by d.w. digital reporter erin tilton erin why does this conspiracy theory continue to be out there well i think what's with like with a lot of different from spheres you theories it's actually it's kind of a sexy idea i mean it kind of gives people who believe in it and kind of adhere to its its message the feeling that you know they can have one up on the rest of society that they know something the rest of the world doesn't but as with many others that we've seen come and go you know the claims really don't have add up if you look at it i know under the light of ockham's razor if you just kind of makes take a hard look at the evidence they don't have a lot backing it up but unfortunately as we're seeing time and time again conspiracy theories like this thrive on social media because they really kind of take advantages of some of some of the weaknesses about how we go about dealing with the social world online we'll talk more about that i mean what role does social media play in this well i think especially it comes down to this theory of
8:12 pm
those kind of 2 things that we need to kind of look at i mean social media has led to a real democratization of the media world i mean it's so much easier to go out there and get your message to the rest of the planet and that's actually been a great thing that's given the voice to the voiceless all over the world however that's also brought some more fringe ideas into the forefront because the end of the day you can claim anything you want to online and you have the exact same reach as anyone else does the rest the planet so it's really given kind of a platform to some of the more fringe ideas out there at the same time you have to remember social media is real goal isn't necessarily to connect the world it's to get you in a chair looking at a screen and make sure you click on as much as many things as possible i mean that's the end goal of you tube of facebook of all these different companies and these conspiracy theories really are kind of tailor made to that because it's kind of like a popcorn it's a little bit of addictive and then the sorting algorithm is like ok this is interesting to you i'll show you the next one 0 sure the next one and suddenly you have that echo chamber where it seems like the whole. world is just saying the exact same thing and i think that's part of the reason that theories like this and
8:13 pm
also i mean you can just look at the problems of the flat earth theory which is cropped up again for proof of how social media really encourages this type of behavior you say it's like eating popcorn and i'm seeing pictures in my mind of a feeding frenzy so what should users do about this well you know it's basically the same thing you do with any type of media even watching our program you really have to turn in your clear critical thinking skills and take a hard look at what people are telling you because at the end of the day you shouldn't accept anything you see online or even in t.v. in the newspaper paper at face value i mean you were given a brain and you should use it so i would say think critically what people are telling you try to think of what the quality of information is and really especially when it comes to social media if you're only hearing the same message over and over and over again maybe a video a little bit more active and look at a different perspective and try to find the you know somebody who's saying the exact opposite so you can kind of test your own your own opinions in your own beliefs so a little scary and yet very fascinating erin tilton thanks so much and you appreciate it in cycling frenchmen know has one stage for
