anti-government protesters more tree a 7th successive weekend they're angry about an erosion of their rights and freedoms. thanks for joining us we begin in ukraine where an exit poll says the party of president volodymyr lansky will take some 44 percent in the country snap parliamentary election it's a clear victory for the former television actor and political newcomer he called the vote hoping to consolidate his party's power enabling him to implement a sweeping reform program running for office is a lengthy promise to tackle corruption and shake up ukraine's political system but so far progress has been slow. w.'s nick

connelly is in kiev at zelinsky selection headquarters nic hello again voting closed about an hour ago in an exit poll indicate a big win for selenski but does it look like the margin he was hoping for. good evening michael well this is definitely a big win a bigger win than any of the previous esas over 40 percent but it isn't the outright majority of people who had been predicting so given quite how high those expectations were running here it does feel like a little bit like an anticlimax certainly the champagne isn't being drunk in quite the same tempo as it was a couple months ago at the presidential poll having said that the arithmetic here the electoral marriage which is kind of complex and it will take some time to see how those rule poll numbers translating seats on the ground ukraine's parliament is made up of 50 percent proportional seats and 50 percent direct elected seats so there might still be some surprises along the way as to how that filters down into

seats in ukraine 6 parliament nick no champagne means so no clear majority water is options that. well the most obvious coalition option seems to be another showbiz in call to ukraine's politics practice love bucket shop the country's most famous rock singer who threw his hat into the ring a couple of months ago and set up his own party known as holist or voice he has passed the 5 cent hurdle of his own over 6 percent and if you put that together with zelinsky serve the people policy you you creep over the 50 percent mark based on these initial exit polls that would be enough but maybe not enough for a comfortable government majority in parliament but definitely we have been hearing 1st reports of zelinsky offering all starting to go chasing. some kind of corporation but you may be a potential prime minister so all things to play for there but it definitely seems like that you would be a good bet to sensi given his rhetoric about bringing a new generation to power and. new style he's the only real new come out otherwise
8:04 pm
in politics the other alternatives are a former prime minister and a former president not people that since he can credibly sell to his vote is as a new style i'm going to ask you to prognosticate a little bit i mean given the current political climate the coalition he'll likely have to form what are the chances he'll be able to enact the reforms he was envisioning. well this is a huge shot selenski he really has a chance if this all comes out comes out as these polls suggest to really reform this country as i said he is in a better position than any of his predecessors who were in devoutly at best had 30 percent also support in parliament but it's also a huge amount of responsibility because he has all the power now that all those leave as a his hand and if you know doesn't deliver the votes to come and point to him in the past it's been a very convenient to stipulate resistance in parliament for failed reforms so now all eyes of let's get to deliver on his. reform agenda. nick

japanese prime minister shinzo aves ruling coalition has secured a majority in the upper house of parliament in sunday's elections but will fall short of the super majority needed to propose constitutional reform during the campaign the liberal democratic party focused on revitalizing japan's economy and bolstering the military. to hong kong now where clashes have erupted between police and anti-government protesters tens of thousands of people took to the streets on sunday for a 7th consecutive weekend the march continued after nightfall police charged demonstrators who had defied orders to disperse and fire tear gas rallies were initially sparked by a controversial extradition bill although that bill has now been suspended the protesters continue to worry their freedoms will road and are pushing for free

the field. and also they want to cover that up. and that they get the fact. that that is not a major but more important. thing to watch you go. and also the government. that is the. right thing and they're also calling you. in hong kong thank you so much. hong kong's protestors have found another cold full way to speak out against beijing. and joins me now in studio with the story of hong kong so-called lenin walls call in lightness yeah it will be lennon walls are actually named after john lennon of the beatles and
8:11 pm
a memorial wall that popped up for him in prague in 1980 in hong kong these are balls that are covered in sticky notes and they have messages of support for the protest movement we saw the 1st one appear actually during demonstrations back in 2014 but now during these protests these are really spreading like wildfire across the city and just to give you a sense of what these walls look like take a look at this we have. a few of them right here these can be found in tunnels and bus stops of metro stations. about any wall or column along the protest route will find these lenin walls in fact some people say there could be as many as 200 of them across the city here's some perspective on how expansive some of these are take a look at this time lapse this is the thai oh underpass it's been renamed the lenin tunnel by protesters look how far this goes on for is incredible in terms of the messages themselves i mean these are notes that express hope solidarity with the protest movement you can see one here that says you'll never walk alone they're
8:12 pm
also pretty creative to take a look at this playing on the movie kill bill he says is that is the bill dead yet clearly not they're still out there protesting but a lot of messages across the city at these london walls so what do these london walls mean for the protesters themselves i mean in a way look these are kind of a visual barometer right of the amount of support that this movement has if you talk to protesters a lot of them say you know this has become a way for anyone even if you're not out there on the front lines so to participate in the conversation here's what some of them have to say. there are more people willing to express their voices no doubt but they might not have so much time to gather together in the same place it's good that there's a place like this in our own community for us to express our views were saying that that's what each person writes or posts is a very personal thing but when you come out and see this to some extent it becomes a type of power this turn something that's very subjective into an object of which

. was imposed on you but how can you. say what they don't see we have rallied maybe tell you this but the government still hasn't given a clear response to our requests take but they can all think so i want to come here to write something to encourage people to take or leave the choice a big play. that last person makes me think what does the government think about these lenin walls i mean they seem to be tolerating it but there have been some incidents of these walls most of the match involving pro beijing protesters earlier this month a clash broke out you can see it here this was a couple approach beijing man trying to essentially tear down one of these walls there's plastic protecting them this turned into a brief fistfight wall supporters intervened now many of these walls actually have 24 hour rotations to guard the notes you see one of the guards here disguising his

face but look i mean just like these street rallies these balls don't look like they're going anywhere anytime soon they've really become a part of and to be clear those who are regular citizens those guys had nothing to do with the government it's hard to know who exactly those people were but clearly they were not happy about those messages that were both of their call nasa and thanks so much for that interesting story in golf it was a no motional day for irishman shane lowery as he won his 1st major at the british open the howling wind and rain a loyal port russia northern ireland proved no problem for lowery as he swept a victory 6 shots ahead of englishman tommy fleetwood in cycling british writer simon yates as one stage 15 of the tour de france and intense mountain stage in the pyrenees that he won after solo sprint french writer julio leap dropped further seconds after struggling on the final of the stages for climbs but retains the yellow jersey defending champion gerent thomas is still in seconds.
