this is deja news live from berlin a big win for ukraine's president in snap elections an exit poll tips floated mirrors a lengthy party to win some 44 percent of the vote is that enough support to help him deliver on his and vicious reform agenda we'll get a live update from kiev also coming up. protests turned violent on the streets of hong kong police fire tear gas and rubber bullets as tens of thousands of anti-government demonstrators march for a 7th successive week and they're angry about an erosion of their rights and

freedoms. i'm max foster thanks for joining us. and we begin in ukraine where an exit poll suggests the party of president vladimir selenski will take some 44 percent in the country's snap parliamentary election it's a clear victory for the former t.v. actor and political newcomer he called the vote hoping to consolidate his party's power and thereby implemented a sweeping reform program when he was running for office selenski promised to tackle corruption and shake up ukraine's political system but so far progress has been slow. and nick connelly is in kiev at selenski election headquarters nic thanks for joining us voting closed just a little while ago given the numbers that we have it looks like a clear. when for selenski perhaps not as big

a victory as he was hoping for. exactly make this was definitely a huge win more than any of his predecessors had achieved and gives him infinitely better power base in palm but it wasn't a majority that lots of the outright majority looks people had been expecting so the kind of celebrations were a little music especially compared to the presidential election back in april not so much champagne drunk here at this election party where the mood is kind of rather more businesslike having said that i think the fact that anything short of an outright majority seems like it went on to climax shows you how high those ambitions are running here this after all it takes that back is a candidate who this time last year was an entertainer and had no official political ambitions it was only new year's eve that he really spoke to the ukrainian nation and said that he would be running for president so this is still a pretty extraordinary people that he's managed to achieve in just those few months

we understand that zelinsky an entertainer actor turned president if you will may be turning to another entertainer musician for help. can you explain. exactly well sounds like bucket is ukraine's probably most famous rock musician and someone who was also thought to be running going to running for president he didn't in the end but has set up his own party called fittingly voice which has now according to exit polls past 5 percent will and will be the smallest policy in ukraine's next parliament and has it looks just about enough seats in the new parliament to a naval zelinsky to get out of that 50 percent mark so that seems like a kind of obvious fit i think that gives you just indication of quite how big that desire was for fresh faces in ukraine people fed up with their old political class people who've been in charge last 2 decades in which ukraine really hasn't has failed to live up to its potential and to be willing to take anyone but the people they knew in these would be. people who through show business was known to every

ukrainian and so had no worries about coaches knowing who they were and if the numbers add up nick and is unless he is able to get relatively solid majority what are his chances of getting his reforms through parliament and particularly in dealing with russian president vladimir putin. when terms of the reform agenda obviously he looks set to have what you his policy will be by far the biggest in ukraine's next parliament basically if these polls are right it's selenski so if people party want to 40 percent everyone else on or around 10 percent or less so that really is a huge gap that even the pro russian policy was led by a budget which is personal friend with the troops coming on just over 10 percent so he has a real chance now to really change this country fundamentally in a way that his previous is didn't but it's a chance and also at the same time a big responsibility because after all if things don't work out if he's not able to

make good on his reforms then the voters will be able to point the finger at him he has no excuses he called push the responsibility on to the opposition parliament as has been the tradition ukrainian politics all eyes now on him to deliver ok nick connolly and thanks for that. to britain now and tensions with tehran the u.k. is considering its options against iran following the seizure of a british flag the oil tanker in the strait of hormuz on friday speaking on sunday british finance minister philip hammond said the u.k. would pursue every possible diplomatic route to resolve the situation according to iranian press reports the 23 crewmembers of state taro have now been taken off the ship for questioning audio has emerged of a tense exchange between a british and iranian navy officers recorded moments before iran raided the vessel . obstruct. the angry

demonstrators who had defied orders to disperse and fired tear gas the rallies were initially sparked by a controversial extradition bill although that bill has now been suspended the protestors continue to worry their freedoms will erode and are pushing for free elections. our correspondent kong was at the scene of the clashes between police and protesters police fired rounds talk to a gas to disperse protesters we can feel the choking and irritating smell at the central business district and high extradition view movement has lasted for more than 6 weeks and there is no sign to end so far protesters have demonstrated a long standing strength and persistence throughout the movement but also now it's more than scrapping the controversial they're also very angry with how the police handled the clashes over the hospital weeks but a government to set up independent inquiry to investigate their liability and more

importantly many of them feel like this may be the last chance to the fan hong kong eroding freedom and fight for democracy something they longed for after years of repression. was you know used to be caught. in hong kong and protesters there have found another colorful way to speak out against beijing and carl and joins me now to shed a little light on that and to talk about something called lenin the wall so lenin is that the communist or the songwriter that would be the songwriter john lennon the talk of the beatles here these are named after john lennon because of a memorial that wind up for him in prague after he was killed in 1980 now in hong kong these are walls that are covered with sticky notes and they have messages of support for the protest movement the 1st one in hong kong appeared during the demonstrations in 2014 this time around though these are spreading across the city there are dozens perhaps even hundreds of these sorts of balls and you can see them
9:10 pm
right here i mean they're really impressive to look at nick you can you can find them in tunnels and bus stops and metro stations nearly any wall were calm along these protests routes you'll find them some people estimate there might be as many as 200 of them across the city to give you a perspective take a look at this time lapse this is in the typo underpass it's now being called the lenin tunnel by protesters because look look how far these notes stretch in terms of the messages though themselves i mean these are notes that express hope solidarity with the protest movement you can see one here that says you'll never walk alone they get funny they get creative you see one here that's of course taking a play maybe on kill bill down movie they're saying hey this bill has not been killed yet and clearly they are out there sending these messages as the protests continue in hong kong and what do we know about what these lenin walls mean to the protestors and the ordinary people of hong kong themselves i mean 1st of all they
9:11 pm
really serve as kind of a visual barometer of the amount of support that these protests have you see that that myal one honked on though you see ok there's a lot of people that support this secondly if you talk to protesters they say look i mean this is a great way for anyone not just the demister. readers to really participate in this conversation take a listen to what some people in hong kong have to say. there are more people willing to express their voices know that they might not have so much time to gather together in the same place it's good that there's a place like this in our own community for us to express our views. what each person writes or posts is a very personal thing but when you come out and see this to some extent it becomes a type of power this turn something that's very subjective into an object of which . the most high on the hog if you. say what they don't see we have rallied maybe tell you this but the government still hasn't given
9:12 pm
a clear response to our requests. so i want to come here to write something to encourage people to take what evo to say. so we heard the last 2 were talking about the government not doing what the people wanted right as the governor think about these lennon walls it's hard to tell me they definitely tolerating them but but you do see there's been some incidents of these walls around the city most of them seem to be involving pro beijing protesters and you can see one of these incidents happening here this was earlier this month a couple of men come in they tried to rip down the wall you see even of this 5 breaks out with some of the wall supporters there they had to intervene because of these sorts of incidents these balls now of 24 hour rotations of people guarding the nodes and you see some of these these guards here set up here in the tunnel. but it does seem like you know just like those street rallies we saw tonight these london malls they're not going anywhere they become
