i'm melissa chan welcome to news asia it's good to have you with us we start in india where the 2nd time's the charm for its historic lunar mission today's launch brings india closer to its goal of becoming the 4th country ever to land a spacecraft on the moon after the united states russia and most recently china the chinese giant to lift it off from its launch pad in and drop their state as planned this time at 2 43 pm local time sparking celebrations at the satish dajuan space center the successful liftoff comes a week after an aborted initial attempt on the unmanned spacecraft will explore the lunar south pole here's more on historic mission. chandrayaan is india's most challenging mission sort of far more highly complex undertaking. the spacecraft should reach its destination in the 2nd week of
6:32 pm
august when it enters an elliptical orbit of the moon. then it will approach the lunar surface. when the landing robot vic separates from the craft the most exciting phase begins india's 1st soft landing on the moon . to select a landing site is about 600 kilometers from the lunar south pole a region of craters on the dock side of the moon. the blue markings here chauffeurs in ice in craters i spotted by satellites. given the high plateau the landing robot should touch down gently ancient rocks.
6:33 pm
after landing will open its doors and release india's 1st lunar rover on to the surface small as a briefcase it can travel up to 500 meters. with its on board instruments the rover will measure water bearing minerals in the lunar rock as well as the concentration of elements such as aluminum silicon and titanium. meanwhile the landing robot will record moonquakes and explore so-called luna plasma a thin layer of electrically charged particles above the surface. and the rover will be able to collect data for a few earth days then it will go dark for 14 days that's when the temperature drops to $160.00 degrees below 0 celsius. the orbiter will spend a year gathering data about the moon the objective is to fill in the gaps from india's previous mission it has 8 measuring instruments on board. their function is
6:34 pm
to investigate the moon's fin atmosphere and show which minerals and chemical elements make up its surface. for the 1st time a special radar will be used to determine the location and quantity of firs in water. india's mission is the 1st to bring this type of instrument to the moon. d.w. sonia found the car has more on this from the capital sonya there must be tremendous national pride right now give us a sense of what people are saying and what they're feeling. that's right and this i mentioned i and to this mission has been a source of immense national pride there was a lot of 7 gracious rounds of applause breaking out of the control center at india's space station today the broadcast was in the midst of this broadcast live on t.v.
6:35 pm
there were about 8000 prominent guests including indian president i'm not called in who was present for what the indian space agency said was supposed to lift off and this is also a huge moment for india because this is really india's most complex this mission to date if it's successful it would become only the 4th country in the world to carry out a soft landing on the moon the chamber the biggest bases in c. k. 7 said today that this is really the beginning of a historical journey for india this is kind of the 2nd chimes the charm there was a plan to lift off last week but it didn't go according to plan what happened there . that's right i mean this mission was set to take off a week ago but it was called off at the last minute because of a technical snag and the indian media's reported that there was there was a helium few wouldn't be in the cryogenic engine of india's most powerful grocott

which is nicknamed the pub now this rocket weighs about $640.00 tons it's a massive taking and its job is to really deliver the spacecraft into the earth's orbit but today too i have to say i have to say there were some anxious moments at the space station because the scientists had a very narrow window of opportunity of just one minute to carry out this launch so they were under a lot of pressure there was really literally no room for debate they had to get a quite this time i keep thinking about the u.s. moon landing 50 years ago and i wonder why is india doing this right now is it to build a national pride or is it because it will advance the sciences in the country. well that similar national pride and prestigious is certainly part of the equation here you know india's space program has really gained new problems under prime minister narendra modi who is the national sleep has promoted the space program as a radius and with of india's wising stature internationally but i think this is
6:37 pm
also about a new global space where you see no experts have said that a part of the established space bar was like the u.s. and russia we even have smaller nations like south korea is why in japan we're pursuing that i think india simply doesn't want to be left out and the total them until it is of course big business you know india has become somewhat of a destination for countries and companies to launch satellites into the earth's orbit and potentially this could bring a lot of growth for india a lot of jobs too big contracts in commercial industries so you found a car thank you. we go to the philippines the where president rodriguez has delivered his annual state of the nation speech to take a one to presidency in a landslide victory 3 years ago promising to aggressively tackle drug crime and corruption and since then the strongman of the philippines has attracted attention for his eyebrow raising controversial statements and above all his brutal war on

drugs thousands of people have been indiscriminately killed by police as part of his campaign which amnesty international has described as a large scale murder enterprise protesters gathered outside the house of representatives to voice their opposition to do tear taste policies but the speech the president signaled he would stay the course. believe me i and my there are i think it has been 3 years since they told me over the ball. brings me to say that we have not learned our lesson on. the illegal drug problem but it says. got up to new york. and in march to secure late because we need to sustain on. all very

mission at the joining us now to talk more about this is journalist margo ortigas from manila my guide to terror tape has taken the opportunity to talk about his accomplishments especially his war on drugs what did you make of all the things he said today. now what we're seeing here actually is a rather unprecedented situation where you have a president in the middle of his term who is actually more popular now than he was when he was elected 3 years ago and aside from that he's coming off the back of a mid term elections where his allies won pretty much a landslide victory so they now have a super majority so he's got both popular support and political support he is expected to carry on with the same line of policy as we have seen over the last 3 years because people are basically saying it's working for them so it's very

controversial war on drugs which official figures say some 5000 people have been killed as a result of comparing 2 of the larger human rights calculations which puts the death toll at closer to 20000 people killed arbitrarily or indeed in premeditated supposedly government sanctioned assassinations but people here are saying they have no problem with that because it's cleaning up their streets what the international audience however is saying is a completely different matter president there to sticking to his guns and saying foreigners cannot get involved in what's happening here and for filipinos what he's doing is working he's spending a lot of money he's passed the universal health care law he's pushing for free college tuition does the government actually have this kind of money. they insist that they do and not just are they making re appropriations of the national budget to support universal health care and free tertiary education in the forseeable

future but they're saying that because of their continued fight against corruption they expect to have more collections in terms of customs taxes or indeed taxes on such products as to back off alcohol or industries such as gaming and casinos so they're saying all in all because they have the political will and the support now of the legislature they are going to be able to do what they want and get the money that's needed to push all of this forward did he mention anything about foreign policy. oh he did definitely and for many people it seemed quite unusual let's put it that way to see a philippine president give what sounded to many as an explainer on the chinese position particularly in terms of the dispute over portions of the south china sea that is the one topic that a portion of filipinos let's say have been very disappointed about in the last few weeks and that is because he have been more. complacent about

allowing china to fish in what is pretty much demarked demarcated as philippine waters but he said that he is trying to keep china as a friend there is no need to start a war he said he doesn't want people to lose their husbands or their sons over this and the only way to go forward is diplomatically and he is trying to maintain friendly ties with china so as not to start an armed conflict margot thank you. that's it for now be sure to check out our other stories on the dot com forward slash asia or on facebook or twitter we leave you with pictures from india where people have been celebrating the successful launch of the country's lunar mission thank you for watching goodbye.
