12:01 pm
before birth toledo tells us why he thinks money is ruining the sport. i'm called assman welcome to the program we start in hong kong where police are cracking down on protesters marching to demand action against gang attacks on pro-democracy demonstrations police have now fired tear gas at today's rally in the district of the involved where protesters are marching despite a ban put in place by authorities this area was the site of violence last week as men in white t. shirts attacked pro-democracy protesters and bystanders demonstrators are angry about the slow police response to those attacks on kong has seen bunts of protests triggered by a controversial extradition bill. and joining me now is our correspondent
12:02 pm
mathias bolinger he is in hong kong for us at that protest now mathias we just saw images of this here gas being fired at protesters can you just tell us what's the situation like where you are right now. well police have moved in there started to disperse the protesters tens of thousands of people have gathered here to protest last week's attacks by these white clad gangsters as they call them here in hong kong they have blocked one of the major roads of this district you're long in the northwest of hong kong and certainly police started in they used tear gas they drove away the protesters now we are seeing skirmishes protesters being driven away coming back it's also a bit of. a complicated area it's hard to say how many people are where and people are scattered around a little bit right now the police is moving back and forth and i've just seen just
12:03 pm
before i came here i've just seen near the. front line that they are announcing more tear gas they have a black flag that they raise before the fire and it looks like they are trying to get the protesters out of here before night falls because there are rumors that at night the white clad people might come back again so there are in fact rumors of them maybe we may seeing similar violence what we saw last week in terms of clashes between demonstrators and those gangsters as you call them. yes these rumors have been around for some time. these this area here has a bit of a bad reputation some of these gangsters might be based here that we saw there have been lots of rumors around it's really very hard to say why they were there last. last sunday and who ordered them to be there there is most people think that they
12:04 pm
have not been there on their own initiative but somebody has paid them and ordered them to come but that's all speculation and we don't really know a lot of this but what we see is. this protest today that has not been allowed by the police is. being cracked down upon and it is we're looking at live pictures there of the front lines of police and protesters standing off let's talk about the police they were criticized for being slow to stop those armed attacks now today we're seeing them using tear gas what can you tell us about the relationship between police and these protesters. police has always had a very good reputation but during these 78 weeks since these these protests started the police has lost their reputation within a big part of society police have been criticized from the beginning as being
12:05 pm
unnecessary brutal unnecessarily brutal firing tear gas firing rubber bullets as has happened at some of the demonstrations processes is seen as unacceptable by most people most people blame the police the violence on the police rather than on the protesters and there this this there's a word that goes around at these demonstration now it's black police police the police are compared to thugs in the eyes of the protesters and some people even think that they might have not interfered with these white clad gangsters because there was some kind of an agreement now that's again speculation but it does you something about how people view the police in hong kong these demonstrations they've been going on for weeks against this proposed extradition bill is there now though a sense that this movement is taking on
12:06 pm
a deeper or deeper significance a deeper resonance there hong kong. yes it's there the extradition bill has been shelved it has not been withdrawn dux angering many people but now this issue is much broader it is exactly about police about how the government treats their citizens it's about hong kong system and although we don't have a consistent demand for a change of system this is or this is not one of the primary demands of the protesters to change the system this is underlying this whole thing but now the most important probably demand of the protesters is an independent has to gauge in into what the police is doing and how the police has been behaving it's about the relationship between the power and the people in hong kong and it's this relationship is deteriorating at a rapid pace as much as well and in hong kong for us thank you very much.
