and we're determined to build something here for the next generation the long. view barmen series of global 3000 on t.w. and omar. this is due to be a news live from berlin russian opposition leader alexina following has been discharged from the hospital after suffering from an undiagnosed illness is being transferred back to jail but his doctor opposes the move claiming he was poisoned with the toxic agent also coming out to china condemns the anti-government protests in hong kong that comes after another weekend of clashes between demonstrators and

police in the territory beijing cullen calls on hong kong or is to oppose the violent. 22 year old cyclist a gun better now and sparks a sensation by becoming the 1st colombian to win the tour de france will have more from the town where he grew up. i'm sumi so much going to thank you for joining us russian opposition leader alexina valma has been discharged from the hospital and is being sent back to jail his doctor is against the move saying she believes now vali may have been poisoned and that his illness remains on diagnose he was rushed to the hospital over the weekend after his face while dop and skin turned red we'll hear more about his condition in a moment but 1st let's take a look at the man challenging lattimer putin's rule. after taking to the

streets demanding free local elections and an open democracy protesters in moscow now face the threat of prison sentences the same goes for their leader alexei navalny he had been arrested before the protests even began and is now charged as he has been many times before with organizing an illegal protest. by beatrice i had gone out for a jog and to buy my wife flowers for her birthday yulia high happy birthday by the entrance there was a small bus of russian special forces in there arrested me now i look like an idiot in shorts in the police station but that's how it is sorry. so years russia's government has known the impact could have as a fierce outspoken critic of the kremlin. novelli refers to himself as a nationalist democrat in recent years however fighting corruption and nepotism in russia has become his priority. this video from 2016 shows
2:03 pm
several properties which allegedly belong to vladimir putin their value far exceeds the official income of the russian president the kremlin rarely reacts to these accusations but nevertheless he is repeatedly caught in the crosshairs of the russian justice department time and again his efforts to organize against the kremlin have seen him end up behind bars in total he has spent 5 months of his life in russia's prisons. and we can speak to our correspondent emily sure win in moscow now i am lee what can you tell us about alexina volleys condition. well he has as you say been discharged now doctors at the hospital where he was being treated say that his condition has improved they have diagnosed him with what they say is contact dermatitis that's essentially a kind of rash on the skin caused by contact of the skin with something that you're allergic to but none of these own doctors contradicts that account they have
2:04 pm
examined him as well and they say that they are concerned about the fact that he's been sent back to detention from the hospital before test results have actually come in they say that he had severe swelling and abscesses on his body and that the symptoms that they found made it seem like he could have perhaps been exposed to some sort of unknown chemical the suggestion there being that he may have been poisoned now we don't of course know whether that's true but the the doctor his doctor was recommending that he stay at the hospital for his condition to be checked so really we're getting contradicting accounts there of his health analysts talk about the background to this because novell these arrests came before protests in moscow on saturday where 1400 people were detained and germany is now urging russia to release those arrested saying it is very concerned describing the
2:05 pm
police action as disproportionate a spokeswoman for the german government said they expect people to be released quickly so only what can you tell us about the timing of all of this. well of course we don't know whether the timing is actually connected to his condition what we do know though is that now viney was a wrecked arrested for having called for these on authorised protests that took place on saturday where over a 1000 people were arrested he himself is not actually running as a candidate in the op coming in moscow parliament elections those are the elections that the protests have been taking place over that's the reason for the protests but 2 of his very close allies are running or had intended to run and have now and not been registered as candidates we don't know of course whether politics is tied up in this his health condition at the moment but we do know that in 2017 he was
2:06 pm
also well he was opponents through a chemical substance and him as well that seemed to be a green disinfectant but later it turned out that he had received chemical burns right are for fun and emily sure when with the latest from moscow thank you emily. let's get a roundup now of some of the other stories making news around the world at least 3 people are dead and 15 injured after a gunman opened fire on a food festival in northern california social media captured scenes of panic as attendees scattered when shots rang out at the garlic festival police have shot in the alleged gunman and are looking for a possible 2nd it's. an italian coast guard vessel that was stranded in the mediterranean carrying more than 130 rescued migrants has now been allowed to dock in sicily but the people on board are not yet allowed to disembark rome has refused to allow them on to tally and soil until other european states agree to take them
2:07 pm
in. and at least 20 people died after a suicide attack in the afghan capital kabul on sunday 50 others were wounded when the bomber and several gunmen attacked the office of 2 government officials so far no group has claimed responsibility sunday was the 1st day of campaigning for the country's presidential elections scheduled for september. china has held a rare news conference to address the unrest in hong kong it comes after another weekend of clashes between police and anti-government protesters the chinese central government blames the turbulence in hong kong on what it calls it were sponsible forces in the west attempting to stop china's development of the protests originally started in opposition to a bill that could see hong kong defendants extradited to mainland china for trial here's what beijing spokesman had to say. i was quite a few hong kong residents know little about the situation on the mainland and its
2:08 pm
legal and judicial systems they may have doubts about the proposed amendments. so some individuals and media organizations with ulterior motives have been scaremongering based on these doubts to stoke public panic and obstruct the adoption of the bill all right let's get more on the story now with day to day's my ts fill in the he is standing by for us in hong kong i'm a ts what more was said at that news conference. well basically the. hong kong and macau affairs office. repeated many of the things that beijing has been saying before it was the 1st time the hong kong and macau affairs office has ever held a press conference in hong kong usually they act in. the back behind the scenes so this is quite noticeable noticeable is also that what we've just heard though it might seem kind of confrontational towards the west is rather moderates for
2:09 pm
beijing's standards scaremongering it's a poor innes scaremongering is something much less than what others for example the foreign ministry has sounded before they have said that poorness have orchestrated these protests at some instances so we are obviously seeing some attempt to to tone down the office has nothing has promised nothing it has given nothing to the protesters it has backed the police it has backed kerry lymes government so there's nothing new here we might also be seeing some kind of dealing in inside the communist party on who is in charge there was a an editorial today in the party newspaper that was much harsher than what was said at this press conference asking the hong kong government to brush away psychological worries that might hinder them to crack down hard on. these these
2:10 pm
comments are meant for an internal audience whereas this office is also. addressing the world audience that explains these differences but i think what we can see here is that beijing has no plans at the moment to come down with a new strategy or it has no new strategy it could come down with at this moment. we have a look now at what happened over the weekend let's take a look. helmets and gas masks on both sides of the barricades a weekend of clashes between police and protesters in hong kong saw violent confrontations protests over the past 2 months against proposed extradition to courts in china have grown increasingly fractious. sunday's peaceful gathering grew into a march clogging up major thoroughfares police fired tear gas to disperse the crowds some of whom were carrying arms brothers the symbol of resistance to the government
2:11 pm
. a few adopted makeshift techniques to deal with tear gas and dismantled street signs for their protection others used to talk he sticks for weapons. but the police didn't hold back from using stronger measures including firing rubber bullets into the crowd i. heard. the protesters took refuge in the shade on bond metro station but the strength of the protest suggests it's far from being driven underground. that ok mathias so again more dramatic pictures from the weekend so where do things stand in hong kong now after those clashes. well today is the calm day in hong kong the remnants of the yesterday's clashes have be
2:12 pm
quickly cleared you can see maybe it's obstructed now by this car over there but to some places they are rebuilding the pavement because protesters have taken out bricks but that's pretty much the only damage that we see after these protests these were really clashes between people between the police and the protesters we have seen enormous amounts of tear gas fired there were clouds around all these places the place where i'm standing now is one of the one of the centers where all these clashes have happened the metro station that we just saw in these pictures is just over there on the corner so. this was an escalation that was an escalation from the side of the police who were earlier and on and it big amounts using tear gas rubber bullets than before and we've also seen an escalation from the side of the protesters who are now more willing to use.
2:13 pm
metal rods and other hot objects to attack the police and this speaks of course of something underlying the divide in society the discontent with this government by big parts of society and especially by the more radical protesters is growing we're going to see this continue trying to get these spending a reporting for us in hong kong thank you for that insight. well let's get some more context to this story davies china expert clifford coonan is here with us in studio hi cliff we saw earlier that china office on hunger ferries held a very rare press conference earlier today to comment on this what has been the reaction to that well i think the reaction so far after the initial surprise that there was going to be a press conference because i think this is the 1st one since 1907 that the central government is held i think the initial reaction has been one of disappointment i think there were people were looking for something that they can work with they
2:14 pm
were looking for maybe a way that they could weigh in to dealing with the central government on hong kong but they got nothing i think one of the early reactions that it was a waste of time for them there were no changes and for as far as kerry was concerned and her position on the extradition law so for most of the democracy protesters there's been nothing they can work with yes what do you make of the fact that china felt compelled to speak out about what's been going on in hong kong but it's quite surprising i mean we've had 8 weekends and have demonstrations on unrest on its on this is on sovereign territory and the chinese government does not descend when she jumping went there 2 years ago to hong kong he said it was a red line which no one demonstrator should never cross they've they've crossed a weekends in a row now so the moderate response and even the moderate response to foreign influence for example has been quite surprising so i guess we have to wait and see what way they will eventually have to do something because they can't keep going on
2:15 pm
like this so we have to wait and see what direction are going to tell that's precisely my question how long will or can they zhang really allow protesters across that red line well i think the last time with the umbrella protests we had they they waited it out and i think this time that's the question whether they will they will couldn't wait it out again but this time it seems different the protests are much more targeted they're not interfering. the day to day life of hong kong and hong kong's business in the same way that the umbrella protests which occupied the whole city were doing so it's a much tougher problem in a way for beijing to deal with without introducing say the people's liberation army which has a garrison and hong kong so it's a question of how tough they're prepared to be with hong kong demonstrators all right are trying to export clifford couldn't with us thank you very much for your analysis you're watching the news still to come colombia goes crazy for its new
2:16 pm
hero cyclist aidan better now becomes the 1st colombian to ever win the tour de france we'll bring you all the reaction from his hometown including from the very crowded ground. but 1st boko haram extremists have killed $65.00 people at a funeral in nigeria the attack happened almost 10 years to the day after the terrorist group started its insurgency in the country the attack took place in a village in borno state in the northeast of the country on sunday gunmen arrived on motorcycles and vans initially killing 21 people during a burial and later another 44 when people rushed to the scene 10 insurgents were also killed. let's bring in our correspondents helen neko she's in lagos covering the story for us hi selah what more can you tell us about the attack. here as well as you said the attack took place on saturday in a village not far away from my degree that's the capital of borno state and and
2:17 pm
what we're hearing from from local groups is that. this seems to have this appears to have been a reprisal attacks for an earlier track that where local vigilantes attacked by her own fighters. and it's basically is the biggest right now but it's in syria it's the latest in a series of attacks on last and the last week. fighters attacked i.d.p. camp an internally displaced persons camp just outside my degree and they also kidnapped 6 aid workers from the organization action against hunger so this is basically the last that we've been seeing in this in the series of attacks sell of this insurgency this boko haram certainty is taking a heavy toll on nigeria why has the government failed in its effort to defeat this group. well that's what many people are asking many nigerians are asking that question both the government and the president who hari the current president and
2:18 pm
the goodluck jonathan jonathan his predecessor. weren't able to get the situation under control. for example. for example in 2014 we saw the kidnapping of 270 schoolgirls because this group has been targeting schools and anything that could indicate western values so for example western education and only half of those school girls have been able to be released and to be returned back to their families so many people are very concerned about the fact that the nigerian army hasn't been making much progress on this and that attacks have actually been happening and they have been very slow to react when emergency calls come and also very slow to follow up and in cases of their production for example our correspondent sell a nickel speaking to us from lagos thank you very much. now websites that include a facebook like button on their pages could soon have to seek permission from
2:19 pm
anyone who visits that holds a ruling from the e.u.'s highest court if you go to a site that includes the like button information about your visit is automatically sent to facebook even if you don't click on it the say c.j. has ruled that the web site itself is jointly responsible for the collection of that data and should seek the user's permission that the case was brought by a consumer group in germany. and we have rob watts from d.w. business to tell us more about this story hi rob so it's a 1000 more about this case what's about well i think is going to come as a surprise to people to find out that when they go to a web site that's got one of these like buttons on it automatically their information is sent to facebook so they don't even have to click on the button they don't even have to have a facebook account what happens is the ip address which is the number that specific to the person's computer goes to facebook the date and time that they visited facebook and the website that they visited goes to facebook now
2:20 pm
a court in germany has objected to this they specifically targeted a website called fashion id dot da which had this button next to each of the items of clothing that it sold this consumer group says hold on why are you taking data of people without firstly telling them that it's going to happen and secondly guessing that consent but a lot of people would object to that i would think so what exactly has the european court of justice decided here well they've really sided with the consumer group what they've said is that in fact i mean i've got the ruling here i could read it to you but it's clear as mud to be honest. i'll try to explain it in slightly simpler terms than they do but once they've decided is that because the websites in question benefit from having this person on their website say for example if you click like next to a really nice shirt then that shirt will get more views on facebook because the more like something has the more prominently is positioned on facebook so because
2:21 pm
the website gets that benefits there for the web site should be considered responsible partly for the collection of that data e.c.g. is there for set it should be up to those web sites to get the express consent of anyone visiting the website for that data to be gathered and also for the person to least be told that that data will be counted ok so what is the impact going to be then on these businesses but also on facebook well specific. glee in the case in germany it will now go back to the court in dusseldorf who decides you know in the instance of fashion id but other websites and now we're going to have to think now that we know the e.c. jay's opinion on this whether or not they need to take action to make sure that they are keeping their businesses informed for example fashion id now has made a change now those like bottoms don't automatically appear next to any of its garments instead hidden right at the bottom of the page is a person you can press to see into those like button has so automatically you see
2:22 pm
that having the like us and there is almost losing its use losing its luster so in terms of facebook they obviously want as many website as possible to have this like what's on it so they can do that thing of data gathering websites are going to be doing it if it seems like a lot more ball the for them all right we'll have to see how this plays out then for facebook rob rots from d.w. business thank you for that story. now in cycling a gun but not has made history becoming the 1st rider from colombia to win the tour de france his success has made him an instant hero in colombia and back in his hometown fans have been celebrating the historic victory. 42 kilometers from the capital bogota is where you got bernard grew up at an altitude of nearly 3000 meters it was the ideal training ground for the mountain specialist 1st coach didn't expect the youngster would win the tour de france this soon. it's
2:23 pm
a big surprise when a gun by now has given colombian cycling. we have so many champions here in colombia. but now we have a kid like an angel. he's only 22 years old. colombia has been gripped by cycling fever during this year's tour the entire nation has followed progress none more closely than his family. you might imagine how i'm feeling cheerful happy. full of joy pure happiness it's very hard to win the tour. the people here and across colombia are extremely proud of their new hero and a guy on edge is 22 years old has become a new motivation for colombians who are looking forward to many successful years in
