10:01 pm
protest in hong kong after another weekend of clashes between demonstrators and police and sounding the alarm on international tiger day the big cancer numbers have declined drastically over the last century we find out why but we also hear reasons for hope. i'm off to our viewers on p.b.s. in the united states and all around the world welcome tonight russia's most prominent opposition leader alexei navalny is back in prison after being rushed to the hospital yesterday his attorney suspects that a chemical agent was used to poison her client but that has not been confirmed and of all he is one of president vladimir putin's harshest critics he's serving a prison. sentence for leading unauthorized political protests. i don't
10:02 pm
actually know validly on his way back to prison one of russia's most prominent opposition figures in the valley was rushed to hospital on sunday after taking ill in his detention cell clinic doctors say novelli had a severe allergic reaction but his personal doctor isn't convinced speaking to the press she said her client was poisoned and warned he could be in danger if he returns to prison. when you bring up the human. believe you'll get it it's unclear whether what he has is contact dermatitis or not but he was in a life threatening condition. and now they are sending him back to the same place where that same toxic chemical substance might be again. and this 2nd exposure to whatever it was could have serious consequences for his health. in the valley was arrested just days before
10:03 pm
a number of unauthorised public protests since thousands to the streets of the russian capital he tried to make light of his arrest the biggest i had gone out for a jog and to buy my wife flowers for her birthday happy birthday by the entrance there was a small bus of russian special forces and they arrested me now i look like an idiot in shorts in the police station but that's how it is so are you chills when you. see now rejoin some 1400 people who were also detained during last week's demonstrations which saw some 20000 people protest the exclusion of dozens of opposition candidates from local elections. the european union criticized the excessive force used by police during the protests saying it undermined the right to freedom of assembly. last weekend's mobilization was just the latest in a wave of popular descent to grip the russian capital this year and not likely to be the last night as they've already called for fresh demonstrations next weekend
10:04 pm
and russian authorities have already started to detain key opposition figures. and for more now we're joined by roman guns rinko from the w.'s russian and eastern europe service it's good to have you on the show we've been trying to find out what the condition is right now of mr ball knee and whether or not it's safe for him to be back in prison i mean what do we know tonight. well as far as we know he's back in prison so he was released from hospital and he himself wrote a long explanation to his supporters on the internet on his blog he describes how fell ill in the night from saturday on sunday and that he was brought to the hospital he never felt allergy and this is something which which everybody is startled by so as a person who weighs. so who has never had such symptoms before suddenly feels sick
10:05 pm
suddenly his face was red was itching and with those symptoms he was brought to the hospital he you know says i do not believe that the policeman in the detention facility could have poisoned him but he says maybe someone more was in my detention so during the time that i was out so he leaves that question open but as far as i understand at the moment his condition is stable and he's. wrong and we know that in of all the he's in prison right now because of his connections with political protests last weekend we saw all protests which in this was just the latest in a long line of protests that moscow has seen this year is popular dissent protests is it spreading in russia. well it's spring it's definitely spreading in moscow and what we've seen on the saturday was very spectacular because. people
10:06 pm
were told by the russian it must go i thought which is do not go to that rally do not go to the protest because it was no want. they d. the right must go government. you cannot go there but still thousands of land knowing that they could be beaten by the police and more than a 1000 people were detained so this is a new quality to the postage and russia and behind that is like saying i've only because he is now under arrest for calling to the people go to the streets protest for fair elections because in the core we have a protest against full fair elections because some are some people from opposition and the volley supporters who are not allowed to take part in the municipal elections in moscow and rome and we know that opposition leaders have called for new demonstrations do you expect a similar crackdown on these new demonstrations briefly please i think the
10:07 pm
demonstration could be even bigger because many of position politicians are knowledge attained all right it's a reporter roman going to rank or joining us tonight with the latest on the fallout from the apparent poisoning of mr an evolving roman thank you. and here are some of the other stories now that we're tracking for use scottish 1st minister nicola sturgeon says the u.k. appears to be heading for an inevitable new deal breaks it after meeting britain's new prime minister boris johnson she says or writes it would affect plans for a new referendum on scottish independence a majority of scots voted to remain in the european union the brazilian authorities say more than 50 people have died during a prison riot in the north of the country officials say brutal fighting erupted between rival criminal groups at the ultimate year of prison in paris state the
10:08 pm
death toll may still rise sudanese citizens of taking to the streets of the capital khartoum after 4 high school students were shot dead during a protest the country's main opposition group has called for more demonstrations against the military government now this comes just weeks after the opposition and the military agreed to an outline of a power sharing agreements that. were no 2 a tragic story here in germany and 8 year old boy died when he was pushed on to the railway tracks and struck by an oncoming train at frankfurt's main station the boy and his mother were both pushed from the platform by a man who fled the scene but bystanders they call the suspect who is being questioned now by police. the attack met with widespread horror across germany. while the 40 year old mother was able to get off the track her son was fatally hit by an incoming high speed train. to
10:09 pm
secure the main suspect a 40 year old man fled the scene some eyewitnesses are part of this to us we were able to track him down with the help of civilians and he was detained near the station and he's currently being questioned about the incident and this military statement at the moment i can't say why you might have done. somebody votes you will know about us gets on happening later kind of for a while a clear motive has not been established police and prosecution are working on an early theory beginning right now we believe the 2 parties did not know each other that there was no relationship between the victims and the perpetrator so we're still unsure about a possible motive. people in frankfurt are appalled. by i'm so sorry for the woman the child the bystanders and of course the driver of the train have their eye and i have 3 children myself and the 1st thing i thought was how my daughter is the same age my feeling is indescribable i just can't understand
10:10 pm
how somebody could do something like this kind of besides questioning the suspects police are working with eyewitnesses to gather more information the mother is being treated in a hospital. she's following the story for. me this is this is a horrific story what more do we know. well we know now that the police have actually launched a murder party of and the latest now is that hosts the hoffa germany's interior minister has actually now broken off his some a vacation to actually meet with some of germany's top security chiefs this evening to discuss what the interior ministry described as several serious crimes that have happened recently of course we had a similar incident like this one here in germany i'm a little more north from frank that just under 2 weeks ago and
10:11 pm
a 34 year old mother that was also pushed onto the tracks and she was hit by an incoming regional train and also sadly died now because this is being taken very seriously as i say the interior minister will be meeting with germany's top security chiefs and we're expecting to him more from him on tuesday what do we know about the suspect that police in question well we know he's sorry for these from the police and from the questioning that the victim in the perpetrator durned appear to have known each other before the incident but we know so far that the suspect is a 40 year old man who is from eritrea that's a fact that particularly fall by politicians far right commentators of already jumped on particularly on social media using that to fuel their argument in germany's very much ongoing migration debates of course that's something as well
10:12 pm
that the german interior ministry will be keen to make sure that that doesn't also a boil over once again but for now as i say most of the places will be getting will be tomorrow now on tuesday and that will be from the interior minister hosts a hope that once he's spoken with those security officials this evening. tragic story tonight kate thank you. the chinese government has held a news conference to condemn the ongoing unrest in hong kong it comes after another weekend of clashes between police and anti-government protesters china called the turbulence quote horrendous incidents that have seriously damaged the rule of law beijing also reaffirming its backing for hong kong and chief executive kerry lam. scenes of street protests like this are becoming more and more frequent after an 8 consecutive weekend of demonstrations in hong kong beijing responded with the rest
10:13 pm
statement. young don't get used to that even the recent developments in hong kong especially the acts of violence by a small number of radical activists have seriously undermined the territories prosperity and stability and challenge the rule of law and public order yet the lives and property of hong kong residents are under threat. staging adds that the protests violate the principle of one country 2 systems the marches began over a proposed bill that would allow suspects from hong kong to be extradited to mainland china for trial. the bill was shelved but protesters have not backed down their calling for the resignation of hong kong need to carry law and for greater autonomy. the comments from beijing do not appear to have eased the tension. we wish beijing officials will truly try to understand what hong kong people
10:14 pm
really want what happened in beijing today and this often would actually help fan the fall of what's already been a tsunami of protest and hong kong want to again as peaceful demonstrations have turned increasingly violent. with more protests planned and beijing standing firm behind hong kong leda a resolution seems a long way off. and for hong kong correspondent told us where things stand after the intense clashes between police and demonstrators over the weekend the remnants of the yesterday's clashes have been quickly cleared you can see maybe it's obstructed now by this car over there but with some places they are rebuilding the pavement because protesters have taken out
10:15 pm
bricks but that's pretty much the only damage that we see after these protests that were really brought clashes between people between the police and the protesters we have seen enormous amounts of tear gas fired there were clouds around all these places the place where i'm standing now is one of the one of the centers where all these clashes have happened the metro station that we just saw in these pictures is just over there on the corner so. if this was an escalation that was an escalation from the side of the police who were early on and it bigger amounts using tear gas rubber bullets than before. and we've also seen an escalation from the site of the protest is. more willing to use. metal rods and other objects to attack the police this speaks of course of
10:16 pm
something i'm denying the divided society. that the discontent with this government by the parts of society and especially by the more radical protesters is growing we are going to see this continue. and i was but she is probably going to have reporting from hong kong today is international day of the time here but the situation facing tigers worldwide is grim populations have plummeted in the last 100 years leaving the big cats on the brink of extinction more than one 100000 asian tigers roamed the earth in 1900 today fewer than 4000 remain in the reasons well they won't surprise you tigers they used to live in areas marked in green as you see right here but as human populations grew so did people's need for space we now have wiped out 95 percent of the tiger habitat leaving only the areas that are marked in red sea right there for tigers to live in climate change has not helped
10:17 pm
as rising sea levels are destroying habitats in india and being to lead a what despite all of this experts say it's poaching that poses the most immediate threat every tiger apart from whiskers to tails is still being treated in illegal markets there is however some good news and number of countries have begun to take aggressive measures to fight poaching and protect the big cats russia has managed to steadily increase its siberian tiger population by introducing tougher punishments for illegal hunting and trafficking another success story from india which today announced that it has significantly increased its tiger population in recent years. for more on this we want to bring in dr elizabeth bennet of the wildlife conservation society but then it's good to have you on the show i mean we've got a positive trend to report in big countries what are these countries doing right.
10:18 pm
it's areas within the country still doing some really good things at places where the countries are really concentrating their effort which isn't everywhere but it's in a lot of important places and one of the core things that they're doing is greatly increasing the number patrols for anti-poaching efforts so 1st of all they are after taking land as protected areas which are important for tigers and then putting real effort into those to guarantee that poaching is minimized or stopped altogether so countries like china and india as he talked about russia china they're also seeing a lot of efforts into something keep trying to make sure the legal the sentiment and also the patrolling is going on and i can give you some examples of that if you'd like that all right let me ask i want to ask you dr of about we're tigers fit
10:19 pm
into the bigger scheme of things we know tigers are predators. how important are they to the local ecology and how high are they on the food chain. they're right at the top of the food chain they're hugely important for local ecology because they keep the larger they prey on larger prey items and that then keeps other smaller predators and in check so they keep the whole system in balance and that means that also keeps the plant systems in balance by managing the herbivores and so they are absolutely critically important to local ecology and when we talk about tigers and humans coexisting we really can't talk about sharing the same space so i'm wondering does the fight against poaching alone does that suffice to stop the extinction of these big cats.
10:20 pm
not on its own it's the most critical single thing is good in force and good patrols against poaching but on top of that we need to do various other things one of them is to try and address their wildlife trafficking further down the line your viewers might have seen last just last thursday there was a capture are trying to get trafficker in vietnam who was caught with 7 frozen tigers that you know i think so we need to capture things as well and the other thing is to again move people away from tigers some lot and so in southern india for example south west india there's a complex of reserves will make it a whole a bandit or band of corps has no people living in and try to write up as as high as they can be their maximum carrying capacity for the area in niagara hallway just to the west of that there are still people living inside the reserve you know one of
10:21 pm
the things that the government of india is doing is a very successful monetary read ok sions claim it's entirely voluntary but people living in the reserves generally don't get good access to schools don't get good access to other resources and by voluntarily separating people and tigers it actually increases the livelihoods and quality of life of most. elizabeth bennet of the wildlife conservation society dr burke we appreciate your time and insights tonight thank you thank you very much. well in the card with a football tournament kicks off on sunday that aims to give homeless people a boost of confidence 500 competitors from around the world are representing their nations in the 17th homeless world cup because the $500.00 players competing in the homeless world cup do so in a spirit of sportsmanship and cooperation. this tournament off the room to schools

fortnight a wildly popular video game that is played by hundreds of millions of people around the world now it has its 1st ever world champion new york host of the world cup in new york this week in their lives the 16 year old gives to taking home the top prize $3000000.00 the american gamer who was known as bull go was one of many players from around the world competing in a packed stadium that usually hosts the u.s. open tennis turned. social media editor joins me here now in the studio to talk about this rich booga yes. 3000000 e's a millionaire and he's a teenager. just looking at this entire pot of pot of money there this is the largest prize pool ever for an east ports tournament. i think in many ways you know they call this a world cup a fortnight this was all about marketing this was making
10:24 pm
a statement that fortnight that that e-sports big deal and that they're here to stay i mean take a look at what this tournament was all about this that everything that a traditional sporting event has a huge stadium you have tens of thousands of people watching scores of competitors live announcers the whole your. fans watching all over the world to in fact 9000000 people well streamed the eventually live on you tube just on the last day of the event for tonight if you don't know what it is this is a video game it's known as a battle one yell so you have $100.00 players fighting it out on an island you see a bit of it here you can build bases you collect weapons and at the end of the winner is the last person standing let's talk about the money though so to put this in perspective. when you talk about you know traditional sports in $3000000.00 what the. that's a lot of money for the winners of the u.s. open tennis tournament which will happen in the exact same stadium next month they take home just under $4000000.00 each so this is basically serena williams kind of
10:25 pm
money here will buy density teenager made that's the same amount of money to that's where the total prize pool is what $30.00 really 1000000 yeah i mean so is this award time thing or i mean there is this you know if you just get used to it i think you should get used to him in a special look at the bottom line brad globally professional video game competitions are set to rake in 1000000000 dollars this year if you look at the maker of fortnight they're called epic games they made $3000000000.30 in profit last year so they can afford to hand out a few 1000000 here or there in these kind of tournaments you know e-sports they're not ready to compete with the n.f.l. with champions league soccer but that's not really the point that's not their competition they're going after the younger viewers they want the short attention spans they want the kids they want people that want to sit there and watch a video game something that they will happen to look at faster that's their audience they're doing very well it's hard getting those teenagers so you've got
10:26 pm
some kids a whole. bunch of the parents feel well that's a good question isn't i mean the 1st reaction from parents shouldn't be in school we should work on your homework right well it's a little bit harder to say that when when your kid can say well look at the boo go right he's a millionaire i mean here's one example of exactly that's happening this is the 2nd place winner his name is jaden ashman he's 15 years old you see his mom there next to him the mom says she's a hard time accepting this whole e-sports thing she actually threw his x. box out the window at a certain point she said you need to focus on your homework well now the 15 year old is basically set for life and jaden here as an example he's like a lot of these teenage gamers he played for every day since it was released in 2017 he says he practices 8 hours a day reality check the rights of 40 wanted to qualify for this only $100.00 and it is not the golden ticket this is a program that's like kids who are there to play sports in high school how many of those how many they can make the n.b.a.
10:27 pm
exactly not so many you know girl thank you. and here's a reminder that top story we're following for you a russian opposition leader alexina balding has been discharged from the hospital and sent back to prison his doctor as oppose that room saying she suspected of all name may have been poisoned in prison. you're watching t.w. news live from berlin after a short break i'll be back to take you through the day and to see you the.
