a couple of hours old right now do we know something about the motivation. well it looks like the shooter and they came very prepared authorities are saying he was wearing body armor and that he had a rifle on them with high capacity magazines so as the mayor pointed out if police hadn't gotten there very quickly he could have killed a lot more people with the ammunition that he had on him. right carla stay with us for just a moment we're going to come back to you because just hours before the ohio attack another mass shooting in the u.s. state of texas left 20 people dead and 2 dozen injured a 21 year old man with an assault rifle opened fire in a crowded wal-mart store in the town of el paso this is close to the u.s. border with mexico he was then arrested at the scene 3 mexican nationals are said to be among the dead the texas governor is calling the massacre a hate crime and authorities are investigating whether

a white nationalist manifesto published on line was written by the suspect. escaping from an active shooter threat. police how clear the wal-mart shopping center possibly texas to bring people to safety off drug called h. reports of the shooting came in at 1039 local time the shopping center that was attacks was filled with thousands of people many with children shopping for the beginning of the school year. eyewitnesses described the immediate moments as extremely chaotic. but another guy that said he saw somebody shot another. kid and it was like we reboarded trying to get out there trying to go to the closest store is the big guy

try to push people away or trying to get up to the webapp officials put out desperate calls for blood donations to help the dozens of we did his patients would distribute it across local hospitals. we took 7 patients to the operating room today. they underwent a number of procedures by a number of different specialists. and it's expected that over the course of the next several days we will need to do ongoing procedures on many of these patients. law enforcement arrested a 21 year old suspect and have found a manifesto online that maybe links to the shooting that has a nexus point in time sure hate crime the f.b.i. will be looking into that with the other federal authorities right now we're looking out for 10 chilled capital murder charges for this individual. the mass shooting is already being called the deadliest in u.s.

history and it's just one of over $32000.00 incidents related to gun violence in the united states this year alone. and that shooting in el paso has prompted an outpouring of grief and sympathy for the victims but it's also sparked or new calls for stricter gun control. as the scale of the bloodshed unfolded officials including texas governor greg abbott called the myrtus a hate crime this is just disgusting intolerable it's not texan and we are going to aggressively prosecute it both as capital murder but also as a hate crime which is exactly what it appears to be without 3 having seen all the evidence you have i don't want to get ahead of the evidence but we have to be very very clear their conduct like this don't like the u.s. actions like this crimes like these are not who or what texas is and will

not be accepted here. as cold into question the gun laws including democratic presidential hopeful iraq. and yes it's the gun laws justice universal background checks and yes we should stop selling weapons of war door to these but i think we also have to confront the state tree that i have never seen in in my lifetime and as vigils west spontaneously held others appealed to the sense of community. this horrific act does not define our community. what defines our community is the lines around the blood bank of people ready to donate people wanting to offer counseling services to families and volunteering left and right that's well possible is that's what's going to define this tonight. it's already been cited as

one of the worst such shootings a grim day for el paso and america. let's go back now to carla black our correspondent in washington carla what have we heard so far from the police about investigations into the south how so shooting. well they're treating this as a murder investigation right now but they are saying it could turn into a hate crime investigation and that's because they have found this money fest on line and if this turns out to have been written by the alleged shooter then this would point to the shooting being a hate crime and also looks like the alleged shooter specifically picked the city of el apostle which is on the border with mexico because this hometown of allen texas is an almost 10 hour drive away from el paso so he did not just happened to be at this wal-mart where he opened fire. do we have
4:09 pm
a reaction yet from the white house from any political leaders and especially what have we heard from democratic presidential candidates especially because the democrats tend to be much tougher on gun control laws than republicans are. president trump tweeted this morning god bless the people of felt postle texas god bless the people of dayton ohio and last night after the shooting he was saying he's sending his thoughts and prayers now politicians from the other end of the spectrum are saying that's not enough and they are calling for stricter gun control laws one of them is mayor pete buddha church of south bend indiana who is one of the candidates running for president on the democratic side and he is saying that the u.s. is the only country with more guns than people and he's saying that it's not made us safer we can respect the 2nd amendment without it without allowing it to be
4:10 pm
a sentence of death for thousands of americans and another presidential hopeful on the democrat side senator and a close shower from minnesota has said of course the individual shooter bears responsibility for the killings in el paso but she is also saying that president trumps rhetoric has and i quote. for fuel more hate in this country and i'm sure we're going to be hearing more about this as the presidential campaign continues karl a black eye in washington d.c. for us thank you so much. and joining me now in the studio is you know the reporter aaron tilton for more analysis so we heard about this manifesto that was posted online it's not confirmed yet that this white supremacists document is attributed to the shooter but we've seen this type of ideology be in the background for a lot of other mass shootings in the united states that were carried out by right wing extremist at what point can we say that this was a pattern well that's really going to hinge on the authenticity of this
4:11 pm
a manifesto that investigators are currently looking into it now. this manifesto is said to contain cain some real extreme right wing thought extreme right wing in the sense of nationalistic and native istic sentiments very very racist sentiments and it's been attributed to the shooter in the situation and if it does turn out to be real it would be an indication that is really fitting a larger pattern that we're seeing within the united states but also abroad as well the manifesto in question was posted to an online picture form referred to as a chant and that is often. put in the orbit of extreme right wing nationalist racist groups now if that is actually accurate if that is true then this is the exact same thing that we saw other chillers united states do in recent months also the christchurch shooter in new zealand did something similar basically these people are tuned to spread this message they're trying to get this message out to the rest of the world so they're posting these manifestos this form knowing that the users will quickly gobble it up and spread it out to as many different sources
4:12 pm
as possible as part of the reason even though the threat was quickly deleted we've seen it already cropping up on twitter we've seen the manifesto appear in google image search is so really if that is authentic then we can definitely speak for a pattern not just the united states but among the the nativist. movement around the world mass shootings designed for consumption on the internet as a display. hundreds of shootings this year alone an increase in frequency in shootings it's been so hard for the u.s. to change its gun laws even though poll after poll has shown there's overwhelming public support for that to happen what is the obstacle here well i think this goes beyond just simple gun laws i mean if you really look at has these mass shootings have been going on for decades in the united states and for some reason the united states is not able to look in the mirror and say ok we have a huge issue with this let's talk about like adults and take steps to actually rectify the situation i mean after this is always the same conversation we have too many guns some people say we have too few guns some people point to as being a symptom of a mental health crisis other people say you know it's socioeconomic you know middle
4:13 pm
class is disappearing that chris frustration other people saying this is a racial issue i mean it's really easy to point the finger but at this point the united states is not willing to take the steps it needs to fix the situation and i mean i remember back when columbine happened i was in high school and suddenly they had all their and i'm going to interrupt you for one second we're going to go live to dayton ohio where there's a press conference on exactly what happened last night let's go to that now to that . city manager. city commissioner chris. dr greg seaman trauma from miami valley hospital and elizabeth long from kettering health network west. i'm sorry pastor can see you pastor rick church from the police and community gather a packed so i repeat some of the things i said this morning just to give some information i want to want to 7 morning this event occurred and our historic oregon

district. the suspect was wearing body armor and used a gun assault rifle 23 caliber with high capacity magazines and he had additional magazines with him as well. we had 10. including the shooter that number is the same. this morning. and we have had the hospitals have had 27 people treated and 15 discharge as of 10 o'clock this morning and less than one minutes in 1st responder responders neutralized the shooter. i'm just still completely amazed at the her heroic nature of our police department where they did a 1st date stop the shooter with under a minute and so we're grateful for their service if you were
