4:17 pm
are continuing to support many families who are arriving in our facility. and our thoughts and prayers are certainly with all of those families we worked in conjunction with other facilities in the area to identify treat and communicate information in timely manner to these families. thank you all right next we'll have elizabeth long is from kettering health network. good morning kettering health network is a health system with 9 hospitals we received patients at 3 of our 9 hospitals. brand new medical center which is in dayton received the most we had 9 people treated 7 were brought in by squad and 2 walked in of those 9 patients 3 are in serious condition 3 are in fair condition and 3 were
4:18 pm
treated and then discharged. 2 were taken to surgery immediately one person is still being considered for surgery. the injuries range from gunshot wounds to the lower extremities to abdominal wounds one person came in for a laceration to a foot that happened during the during the chaos right after right after that incident at kettering medical center our flagship hospital one person was brought in and isn't serious can. and at medical center 2 people were brought in and were treated and released. we want to command. our hospital staff all the way from our physicians and nurses and technicians to the people who came in right away when we called the code yellow alerting people that.

they were district is one of the safest places in the whole region. you know these senseless acts of violence that occur. have been happening. any place and i don't mean to scare people but frankly i mean we're at a situation now in our country that you're really you know these are so random there's no place that you know you could say oh i just don't ever go anywhere so as far as the safety of the district it's one of the safest places in the whole region . i don't think we have that information yet you know as we get more updates will continue to. work there are some who remember somebody in your industry. or something and when. we don't have any of that
4:22 pm
information to report on yet at this time as we continue to get information about the shooting we will certainly tell you that we don't have any of that information and we. have now we've had folks that have been reaching out to victims as they've come in and i plan on. meeting with those that are going through a very difficult time in the coming hours. we don't know that for certain we're in the process of that. you know. look i mean. dayton has gone through a really tough year. 3 months ago early in the morning the day after memorial day i think we had not quite this many cameras focused question about 14 tornadoes that rather it ravaged our city and now to you know
4:23 pm
be awake and then overnight to a mass shooting in the 250th shooting in our country this year happening date and. what really goes through my mind is one seems completely preventable and. you know i just want i just question when is enough enough. and so you know as we're continuing to do everything we can for the victims for our community. for families. you know that's where our focus is and it will continue to be there and i continue to be amazed about the grit and resilience the of this community the challenge that it is taken off on just in the past few months and the love and support that comes from people is. something that keeps me going as mayor and makes me so proud to do this work with. far more.
4:24 pm
all of what. i was. going to stand next to me. i can. get some point will be able to tell you exactly how many shots were fired by officers exactly how michelle she was fired by the suspect but i can't give you that information just yet there were multiple rounds. we'll get to some more details later but but for this coverage i can't really show just yet you're still early in the place all over the world. about the shooter though where the bodies of they are laying the valley we have identified the suspect and we will get that information to you soon we are we're in the us to get a process and that takes precedence we understand that the that the public wants to know who this person is and that will be released and obviously we're working very
4:25 pm
hard to to give the public an answer as to what the motivation might have been for this man but it was not a slip through the eyes. we're investigating all all information all leads and and we'll go where the where the evidence takes us at this point we're aware of of one shooter. or one. will get more that information i can tell you like the mayor said earlier this is a this was a a 223 rifle with a high capacity magazine and extra magazine. on his person. yes of course you know we had just just like we have police report quickly in the district will continue to have folks around and look you know were. please we know
4:26 pm
the community wants to come together so for this a.t.m. but vigil we know we'll have that site coming about one minute one of those criteria probably what were you doing there. there were probably 8 all. around. me all of. them out all last night and the ones running. you should stay behind me on a plane and i was. there were there were several officers who were working in the or going to. in the immediate vicinity which is you know we're all very fortunate that they were there and they were able to shorten this timeline of violence to the less than a minute and we we regularly have officers specifically assigned to do the oregon district with a high concentration of people and we want to make sure that everybody stays safe
4:27 pm
so that's our goals and that's why we we we typically have officers patrolling to specially round. the park and we really want to do what you can tell us but you need to bring to eat at least you know those men and women young or old great anything will get more information to you if you live. and learn and then. yeah i can tell you that the investigation you know right now takes takes precedence over over people knowing that you know knowing immediately that the public will be will be told who this person is and it's it's important for us to try to establish. you know to try to identify all the evidence and and possible motivation in this in this crime because i think the victims the families of the victims need to know that so that's the priority. a lot and i mean.
4:28 pm
all right well that was the press conference with the mayor of dayton ohio and several other city officials aster a mass shooting that just occurred there overnight with me in the studio is you give your heart to aaron tells and there's a lot to unpack there that we just heard what were your biggest takeaway as well really i think the question that kind of gets the crux of the issue and what people are actually asking online as well is are people still safe in their willie really kind of touched on that in a pair of very direct fashion almost actually has a sad fashion where she said these events are so common in the united states they happen so often so randomly with no forewarning everywhere that you are just as safe and dating as you are anywhere else in the country and you. you can get hit by this type of violence just no matter where you are and that's really kind of the sad state of affairs united states has gotten itself into i mean we've been covering these types of mass shootings really since the columbine shooting back in 1999 i mean it's been 20 years since then and this is happening over and over and over again and that's exactly what we saw there as well you know the admission that
4:29 pm
you were just as safe anywhere because you were safe nowhere so that's what the mayor was telling us right there absolutely and quickly if you can this is ohio is a very politically important states and this is probably going to be a key issue now moving forward with this presidential campaign that we're seeing what will certainly i mean we are seeing renewed calls for gun control all throughout the united states at the same time we are seeing people say no 2nd amendment rights we won't touch the gun control issue and for democrats this could be our make or break issue moving forward but at the end of the day i hate to admit it but it's also kind of sad that that's where we are another mass shooting another mass of tragedy and we're just talking about the election campaign absolutely and this is a huge obstacle of course moving forward for gun control advocates for gun control opponents everything that's going to come up in the next days weeks months years aaron. thank you so much for your analysis you. and now will bring your reminder of the top stories we're following for you too at mass shootings have taken place in the united states just hours apart at least 9 people have been killed after
4:30 pm
a gunman opened fire in a bar in dayton ohio police say a suspected shooter has been killed and at least 20 people were killed in a separate shooting at a wal-mart store in el paso texas authorities are treating the el paso massacre as a possible hate crime. this is news coming up next just faith matters a look at the role of lutherans in jerusalem and my ass later thank you so much for joining us. oh.
