or welcome to the program. 2 mass shootings 2 separate mass shootings in the united states have left almost 30 people dead both are now being treated as domestic terrorism the more recent attack took place in the city of dayton ohio police say 9 people were killed when a gunman opened fire in a bar in the said terror of the city 27 others were taken to local hospitals with injuries police killed the suspected shooter at the scene the incident took place just after 1 am local time and this is the 250 mass shooting that has taken place in the u.s. this year dayton's mayor praised emergency services for their swift response to the attack and less than one minute's dating from the 1st responders neutralize the shooter well this is a terribly sad day for city i am amazed by the quick response of police

literally hundreds of lives well just hours before the ohio attack another mass shooting in the u.s. state of texas left 20 people dead and 2 dozen injured a 21 year old white man opened fire with an assault rifle in a crowded wal-mart store in the town of el paso which is close to the u.s. border with mexico he was arrested at the scene 3 now mexican nationals are said to be among the dead the texas governor is calling the massacre a hate crime and authorities are investigating whether a white nationalist manifesto that was published on line was written by the suspect . scaping from an active shooter threat. police clear a shopping center in el paso texas to bring people to safety after a gunman wreaks carnage at a nearby wal-mart store. so reports of the shooting came in at $1039.00 local time the wal-mart was filled with thousands of people many with kids shopping

for the beginning of the school year witnesses described the immediate moments as extremely chaotic. to another guy that said he saw somebody shot another neighbor shot him and then it was like wait the board just trying to get out they're trying to go to the closest store in the big time trying to push people away or trying to get into the witness officials put out desperate calls for blood donations to help dozens of wounded as patients were distributed across local hospitals. we took 7 patients to the operating room today. underwent a number of procedures by a number of different specialists. and it's expected that over the course of the next several days we will need to do ongoing procedures on many of these patients. police arrested a 21 year old suspect and have found a manifesto online that may be linked to the shooting. that has

a nexus this point in time for sure hey koren the f.b.i. will be looking into that with all their federal authorities right now we're looking out for to ensure with capital murder charges for this individual to mass shooting is already being called the 8th deadliest in u.s. history and it's just one of over $32000.00 incidents related to gun violence in the united states this year alone. joining me now in the city a former analysis is a reporter errant helton they are authorities have announced and are treating both the texas and the date messages as domestic terrorism when just hate crime terrorism what's the line well basically it's a fairly simple definition a. crime is a crime a violent act that you carry out when you're attempting or when you actually hate or demonize a different group of people that can mean you know racial bias or religious bias that can be the motivation for you to carry out a violent act domestic terrorism piggybacks on that but basically says the attempt
7:06 pm
what you're tempted to do with with your violent act is an attempt to sow terrorism among specific group of people not terrorism rather the terror and fear among a specific group of people and the reason this is being discussed right here in this case is because at least in the past though case the alleged domestic terrorist published a manifesto online where he said he was attempting to carry out basically what he phrased as a race war against migrants coming in from so the border for reason and specifically like that it's insane he was attempting to strike fear into their hearts and also their supporters throughout the country so that is why this is being treated as a case of domestic terrorism and. it's an interesting there's an interesting nuance here that we really need to kind of address at the very 1st day a lot of opposition politicians a lot of democrats the united states started referring to this as a case of domestic terrorism and encouraged donald trump to do the same however in his tweets last night in his message last night he refrained from doing that only
7:07 pm
describing this as a cowardly act and that really has a lot of people up in arms in the united states at the moment because there is this accusation that have been cropping up year for year in recent years that terrorism is not a charge that's leveled against white americans saying that if a white american carries out an act of violence they are very very rarely ever referred to as a domestic terrorist that's not the same if somebody looks different if you're not somebody who looks like this that is the chance if you've been called a terrorist united states is much higher so what we're seeing right here is that prosecutors are going aggressively at the source here saying that these acts were fit every definition of what domestic terrorism should be and is all right stay with us here for a 2nd arrow going to come back to you and it tells that shooting in el paso has of course prompted an outpouring of grief and sympathy for the victims but it's also sparked some renewed calls for stricter gun control. as the scale of the bloodshed unfolded officials including texas governor greg abbott told them it is
7:08 pm
a hate crime and this is just got disgusting intolerable it's not texan and we are going to aggressively prosecute it both as capital murder but also as a hate crime which is exactly what it appears to be without having seen all the evidence you have i don't want to get ahead of the evidence but we have to be very very clear that conduct like this like this actions like this crimes like this are not who or what texas is and will not be accepted here. those called into question the gun laws including democratic presidential hopeful iraq. and yes it's to gun laws just universal background checks and yes we should stop selling weapons to the border communities but i think we also have to confront this hatred that i have never seen in in my lifetime. and as
7:09 pm
vigils west spontaneously held others appealed to the sense of community. this horrific act does not define our community. what defines our community is the lines around the blood bank of people ready to donate people wanting to offer counseling services to families and volunteering left and right that's well possible is that's what's going to define this tonight. it's already been cited as one of the worst such shootings a grim day for el paso and america. bringing back our reporter aaron telt and aaron we just learned that the suspect in the texas case they'll pass a shooting bought his firearm legally tell us a little about how easy it is in the u.s. to purchase military style weapons. well that really is depending on who you ask and what you define military style weapons as and this is part of the issue gun
7:10 pm
control united states is one of the most polarizing issues facing the country and has been for decades right now and there's very even very little consensus among both sides what is a military style weapon you know. gun control advocates say you know that's a fully automatic weapon that is actually used by a military force and if that's the case it's very very difficult since 1906 there have been gun control laws on the books which prevent or make it much more difficult for people to buy those types of weapons are very expensive require special permits. however people on the pro-gun control side basically say semiotic matic weapons should also come and because they also give you the ability to kill large amounts of people or animals if you're asking other people in a very quick process however people who are against gun control say that that doesn't count those are weapons used by the military and this really gets at the heart of the issue that is hard for both sides to actually find a common language to use when speaking to each other at the moment now despite
7:11 pm
these hundreds of shootings this year alone it seems like the frequency is increasing as well in the u.s. it's the congress failed to change its gun laws and this is of course now going to be a huge issue especially coming up in this presidential campaign despite there being overwhelming public support of poll after poll for changing the gun laws why is this was the obstacle here well as i said i mean it's one of the most divisive issues on the national scene and has been for decades i mean it's very rare when i'm back in the states at least that i find somebody who's just kind of a lukewarm on either side of the issue it has really become a touchstone of sorts for both sides in terms of their support and like i said if it's difficult for both sides to actually find a common language it's hard for them to have a rational discussion about the issue so i mean that's one of the one of the issues and also you can't forget i mean the n.r.a. and the gun lobby is one of the strongest lobbies in the united states and has been for decades and because of that they've been able to partially dictate really the national debate which is part of the issue why that's like i said these
7:12 pm
conversations that really need to be happening should've been happening for decades now haven't been aaron tells and thank you so much for your analysis thank you. and i will bring you some of the other stories making news around the world sudan's military chiefs have signed a power sharing agreement with protest leaders that paves the way for civilian rule to do a deal establishes a joint council that will govern and elections will be held in 3 years the breakthrough ends months of violent protests in which over $100.00 people were killed. emergency workers and the military are battling huge wildfires in eastern russia the blaze has not hit populated areas but the smoke is affecting around $800.00 settlements including large cities and towns throughout those already destroyed an area around the size of the country of belgium. a massive power outage has left rail commuters stranded in the indonesian capital jakarta the blackout affected cities with more than 100000000 residents across the
7:13 pm
island of java the indonesian power utility says faulty equipment caused the outage . iran says it has seized another foreign flag oil tanker in the persian gulf 7 crew members have also been arrested iran's revolutionary guard said the tanker was smuggling around 700000 liters of oil through the persian gulf to unnamed arab countries the incident actually took place on wednesday but has only now been announced it would be the 3rd chevron has seized in recent weeks the country is still holding the stand imperio british tanker another ship was released with a warning. for more analysis i'm now joined by marcus kind senior fellow at the german institute for international and security affairs here in berlin so this is the 3rd tanker that we know of at least that iran has seized in the past weeks is there any substance to these accusations of oil smuggling or is this just iran being provocative i think we have 2 very different patents for just one. british think it
7:14 pm
was a clear signal to the united kingdom to the well. in general so it wasn't about the tank as such but more political signal don't mess around with iran. seizure of the small vessel today and another vessel a couple of weeks ago it seems to be a different pattern around it's fighting the smuggling of highly subsidized petroleum. oil. paper would be around the governments to our country so i think it's a different pattern here. this is a tense situation and the persian gulf or whatever these patterns are what does this mean for europe for european oil supplies for european trade routes for the economy i mean in general your country's resource poor resources and a highly dependent on exports and imports therefore they haven't you which interest
7:15 pm
in the freedom of the seas the freedom of navigation in all the sea lanes internationally and in particularly and there are a persian gulf to 20 to 30 percent of the d. the oil production is shipped through therefore i think we have a very interesting debate here in europe going on in germany and other european countries about this maritime mission about patrolling the seas do you see a potential end to this provocation we heard of the iranian ayatollah saying if iran can't sell its oil no one can and they really do effectively control the strait of hormuz no matter what so what could be a possible and to these provocations to this increase in tension i think we have to differentiate between the political tensions so clean room the program which cannot be solved so far without the united states which is the trumpet instruction has decided to leave the room and i think to be honest it's dead so far
