conversations after having long dismissed rumors that they did any such thing plus a woman will make soccer history tonight stephanie from parts will take charge of a major men's match in european competition for the 1st time she steps up for referee a liverpool against chelsea in the u.a.e. 5 super cup. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program more tear gas in hong kong this evening as hundreds of protesters gathered outside a police station in yet another violent clash in the territory demonstrators clashed with police as they marched through a residential district it follows 2 days of mass protests at hong kong's international airport that at times turned violent.
5:02 pm
correspondent david kong is standing by with the very latest from hong kong now and we're just hearing these fresh reports of protests that that just kicked up again in hong kong as evening falls what more do we know. yes post has says they originally they can and they have by a police stations in downtown hong kong to nice to mark the end the old goat festival which is such as a shadow chinese religious festival and protest says over that it's has his traditional rituals like burning paper offerings and praise all that things over there and some of them as have a gathering eli they event point a laser beam at the police station and people also chant slogans against police excessive force essentially the wrong call saying injuries of a lady earlier over the weekend and holding center they wanted to pose has this and
5:03 pm
also they accuse the cause has a sound offices by race of pointers but then those have said they refused to leave and actually says no there actually is a whole confrontation the clue to how to essentially as we have seen all the pictures that essentially police say 5 rounds of tear gas is the 1st protest as flu points and they said things like 2 or 3 times as all the police station and what isn't really incredible so far is really just a sense of resolve among these protesters c.v.a. it seems like these clashes have really become the new norm. well you know just like cheney has like over the city is becoming like you long as you have mentioned that is the also the impression amount many of the hong kong citizens because even though the police there explaining their using the minimum force to disperse protesters but we. a have become
5:04 pm
quite frequently news buchan's to the 1st protest says no matter what they see. there is what i see sicko confrontational not like tonight who has said he didn't like psych us out felicie the cleavers of police safe to use uses time to leave so there are 2 like several protests upcoming in the coming 2 days so i think this will be your own as you have mentioned in the foreseeable future and it's a developing situation on the ground this evening phebe kong with the very latest on what is happening there in hong kong thank you. meantime hong kong's international airport has now reopened following 2 days of mass protests china's hong kong affairs office has condemned yesterday's violence calling it terrorists like a ramp up in rhetoric during the territories long summer of unrest. from kiryas to

cal hong kong international starting to resemble an airport once again this morning passengers on the move departure boards no longer a sea of red cancellations the signs of the crippling protest still visible on disc one to travelers to. not the protesters but at the end of the day we're going to stop the blind protesters because we're the ones caught in the middle of the sandwich. and you know arm already 2 days late getting to where i'm going to be . that's costing me money the airport authority was not visible and all the condos were simply close all gone you closed the condos. hours earlier riot police clashed with protesters a mob cornered one officer snatching his baton. before he drew his gun remarkably no one was killed. elsewhere the

5:07 pm
journalist and expert on china and hong kong welcome to the program we had this apology from the protesters for the disruption at the airport what do you make of that you know that was a really good step i think because it shows a thoughtfulness reflectiveness about what's going on and i think it also shows a way towards some kind of a compromise now with the protesters also saying ok this is a really terrible situation but if they make a step forward perhaps the government could consider also coming a step forward and this is this is the only way that this is going to be resolved through compromise at this point however we have seen from the chinese side though you know stronger rhetoric coming from them they now say that these protests are nearer terrorist acts what do you make of the potential chances that we can see this further defend into a more descent excuse me into a more violent situation you know well this is our huge fear as hong kong is and i can i have to say it's absolutely terrifying for
5:08 pm
a lot of people the sort of the i mean the militia on the streets i think that the rhetoric is frightening it's designed to be frightening that doesn't mean it doesn't mean anything it does mean something but one has to simply say we're not there yet everyone just stay calm and i think again both sides need to start making compromises beijing is raising more and more red flags that's clear through the language in the language matters a lot but there is still some room to go the international community has been putting on pressure for those compromises to be made german chancellor angela merkel commenting today calling for a peaceful resolution to the situation we also have the united states warning about swift consequences if china terms of violent crackdown how important are these international responses just china really care at the end of the you know i think they do care and a lot of people will say that they don't they're going to do what they're going to do because it's a tough regime it's. a one party state statistic tator ship however i think trying
5:09 pm
to does care about its international image about how it's perceived by the west i think it truly wants to be seen as you know civilized now sending the army and isn't particularly civilized frankly and you know it happened in beijing in 1909 it was a total disaster for its image for decades to they really want that happening again in hong kong exactly 30 years later and just as she really want to be seen as a regime that basically subdue cities by force of arms that's the question and i think they are prepared to do it if they feel they have to but i really really wish hope and pray that we don't get there and that compromise is the way forward and there i see the hong kong government as having a lot of work to do because they need to compromise as well these fundamental demands of the protesters were actually promised in the basic law i.e. greater voting rights constitutional changes towards more self governance the rights to control their own lives and solve problems on the ground and they're not being held you know beijing and hong kong government keep pushing it away and away and kicking the can down the road there's
5:10 pm
a lot of compromise that could be reached there if the hong kong government was prepared to do that so much at stake here and we see the sense of resolve resolve on both sides really holding firmly to their positions due to christian taught load journalist an expert on china and hong kong thank you thank you. of could a quick check of some other stories making news around the world to germany's latest growth figures have fueled concerns that the country could be heading for a recession the economy contract to 0 point one percent last summer the slump has been attributed to falling global trade if the economy contracts again in the next quarter gropes largest economy would officially be in a recession. italy is marking one year since the genoa bridge collapse that killed $43.00 and injured many more political leaders and hundreds of locals are holding memorial services in the city to a section of the bridge gave way joining the thunder storm last august sending dozens of vehicles into railway tracks below. footage released by

a domingo after 9 women said that they were sexually harassed by him as far back as the 1980 s. so far there have been no cancellations by european opera houses and orchestras the 78 year old singer has denied the accusations calling them inaccurate. he's considered one of the most powerful and celebrated singers in the world of opera but plus he didn't go soaring 10 a voice is now said to have long been accompanied by stories surrounding his treatment of women the recent allegations of sexual harassment have resulted in 2 major houses canceling upcoming performances featuring mistah the los angeles opera where domingo as general director has also announced an investigation. 8 singers and a dancer told the associated press that they were sexually harassed by domingo in encounters that took place over 3 decades. but only one of the 9 women has allowed her name to be used that's a soprano patricia wolfe. point to me and that powerful.

he's almost like god in my this when he would come up close and say that the 1st thing that goes through your mind is one but you also think as soon as you walk away and get away you think did i just ruin my career. those who came forward with the allegations said they felt emboldened by the me too movement doming or has denied the accusations but no tears still it is painful to hear that i may have upset anyone make them feel uncomfortable. let's get more now we're joined by rick fulker from d.w. culture so you know we've heard about these canceled contracts now domingo obviously going to take a financial hit from this. what implications though do the allegations have likely for the wider opera world. well it's kind of difficult to say at this point because
5:17 pm
in fact as we noticed the reactions in europe and america are quite different the cancellations in america but the appearances at the zealots book festival on august 25th and 31st are going ahead as planned he has 3 scheduled appearances with the vienna state opera before the end of the year and the president of the cells book festival said interestingly he feels that this time it would be inappropriate humanly you know appropriate to pass judgment and to make decisions based on their judgments so how this plays out in the upper room is an open question if you want to spend absolutely there will be presumably hopefully some due process here but we have you know just generally speaking since the launch of the mitsu movement more people coming out speaking about sexual harassment including in the classical music world have you been seeing it leading to change. no not yet but i know that the power structures in the classical music world are being very seriously questioned at this point and also recalls something that's fresh in memory the career and the end of the career of james le vine for decades the music

director at the metropolitan opera in new york for decades it was kind of said there's something going on that had to do with sexual harassment and things more serious let's say than than just suggested sexual harassment his career was ended and with domingo and le vine both protected by their stellar reputation reputations domingo is just for example being called maybe the greatest opera singer in history these seemed untouchable but now with these 2 careers being questioned or perhaps damaged or even ended both it feels to me at this point that this is maybe the tip of the iceberg and that sexual harassment is in demick in the music world and that there will be more revelations to come. on the story for us thank you. coming up next on news making history agree stephanie from part will tonight become the 1st woman to

take charge of a major men's football match in the european competition we will look at the task that she faces peddling chelsea and liverpool in the way for a super cup. but 1st we're heading to a polish village where no boys have been born in almost a decade women outnumber men so they have taken over jobs in areas that were traditionally be more male dominated and that includes the villages volunteer fire brigade. it's a job these recruits take very seriously. even the very youngest. my i go last she is just 2 and a half years old but what ever the age all the girls in this polish village are expected to become trainee firefight is. a relation that of

mine in the uk we know many do rescue operations putting out fires helping out to his various accidents. we also try to hope. there's a reason why the volunteer fire brigade to me. is made up entirely of girls no boy has been born in this village of 300 residents for almost a decade but you'll though it's not quite the role expected of girls in poland it's obvious these volunteers are extremely committed. here was watching the premier is to be one of my dreams is of course having a husband but all main dream is to get the new fire engine because this one is 44 years old and we care for it as much as we can but about afraid that one day we'll be called traction and it won't work because some awkward when you're mostly. the local man maybe offering a prize to the 1st couple to produce a son which any boy born here will have a tough act to follow. facebook is in hot water again this time it's due to

revelations about the company's messenger app a reporter calling osman joins us here in the studio with the story so you know we all recall those very words right that facebook was sort of listening in to you know our call our conversations but that they were in a way in a way they were i mean been accused before of listening through our phones in order to give us this kind of creepy personal advertisements they're still not doing that but it does turn out that the company was listening to some conversations they were being used though for a different purpose according to bloomberg facebook it hired an outside company to listen to and transcribe all. audio clips from users conversations facebook says this was done to improve its artificial intelligence and that was something that would automatically change your voice into text inside of facebook messenger this is the feature in question here this is one that would do if you turned on your
5:22 pm
voice transcription and sent a friend an audio message your message would automatically be turned into text just as you can see here giving instructions for what to buy at the grocery store of course as we know artificial intelligence isn't always very accurate that's why a human being may have been listening to those audio clips and checking for accuracy was the ai doing a good job so actually a person could have listened to your conversations within facebook messenger it sounds a little scary it is i think it's little bit creepy i mean facebook didn't tell users that a person might be listening to what you were saying in fact even the contractors who were hired for this felt a little bit iffy about it apparently some of those audio snippets were also quite personal wasn't just shopping lists we reached out to facebook today the company said look this audio was anonymous so it wouldn't be linked back to you they said it was only being used to improve its product so wasn't listening for advertising purposes a company spokesman person also told us it has stopped doing this here's exactly
5:23 pm
what facebook told us they said much like apple and google we paused human review of audio more than one week ago so we all know i mean sometimes voices are recognizable though so especially for those of us in the t.v. business facebook says it's not the only company that has done this it is not i mean facebook is now the 5th big tech company that has been forced to really come clean on this so we have amazon we have google with apple we have microsoft along with facebook in amazon's case employers were listening to voice recordings through the alexa smart speaker system in all of these cases cases the companies had not told people that a human being was listening to their converse. all those companies now now that it's been revealed have said they've stopped doing it those who are concerned what can they do the sure fire way to make sure no company is listening to your audio is of course to turn off your smartphones microphone and that could be done in the settings will just show you quickly how that can be accomplished both an apple and
5:24 pm
an android you essentially want to go your phone's settings football for the microphone access in any app that asks for it so facebook or messenger but in the end say i mean companies just need to get it look people don't want to their conversations their audio being listened to for any reason without their permission that's the key thing here the permission for a human being to listen to it was not asked for called usman from day to thank you . he had the football now and history will be made tonight at the leafs super cup for the 1st time ever a woman will referee a major men's match in european competition france's stephanie park will take charge of the all english clash between liverpool and chelsea in turkey. istanbul is the venue for the latest milestone in the career of stephanie from. the french referee has already taken charge of the women's world cup final and a men's game in a country's top league now she will officiate the u.a.e.
5:25 pm
for super cup but doesn't feel like she has to stand out from male counterparts. i don't think so i think is the same we had to prove i was physically they'd make me and tactically that we have the same that demand so i'm not afraid about that. i think nothing changed only the respective coaches say they're proud to be part of the landmark game. because so many things in the world out there which we are still obviously not. smart enough to make the right decisions at that very very smart decision that we finally can bring a bowman to. be the referee of a very very important game in a big game in front of millions of people very place this our own place we have placed a historical moment more struck in the right direction it's like the super cup is notable for a noble reason it's the 1st between 2 english clubs with european champion political taking on europa league winners chelsea but it's just another game for.
5:26 pm
despite her newfound fame of course my check my change because i am more popular now in order words i was on saw a point in the 1st league in france so i know the feeling i know the. strategy she will have 2 female assistant referees but company. it's dumbo is ready for a piece of football history. a quick reminder of the top stories we're following for you on protesters have apologized for disrupting flights at hong kong's international airport during 2 days of protests operations have now resumed after scuffles yesterday beijing has slammed the demonstrations calling them terrorists like actions. that you can always get interviews on the go just on the route from google play or from the apple store which gives access to all of the latest news from around the world as well as push notifications for breaking news you can use
