this is the w.'s life from bad ben britain's prime minister challenges the german chancellor said visiting the german capital paris johnson the press is i'm going to battle to reopen the deal and negotiated with his predecessor and repeats his demand that the e.u. scrapped its back stop plan to avoid a hard fought in ireland as britain prepares to leave the block on the 31st of october.
8:01 pm
i'm phil gale welcome to the program german chancellor angela merkel british prime minister barak's johnson have agreed to work to resolve key issues regarding britain's departure from the e.u. on his 1st foreign visit since becoming prime minister last month mr johnson's involvement to push his case for reopening the u.k.'s divorce deal with the european union speaking in the last hour he repeated his demand that the irish backstop be removed from the bracks it withdraw agreement chancellor merkel said the e.u. was united in protecting the integrity of its customs union. so here's more from the 2 leaders on the irish backstop and prospects of a new bracks it deal. yes of course i think there is ample scope to do a deal and sprained i think pretty clearly what needs to happen we need to remove those elements of the of the withdrawal agreement that simply don't work for the.
8:02 pm
the u.k. i've spoken of the things that i think are sensible the protections of the rights of you nationals but the the back stop that particular arrangement which i do think has grave grave defects for a democratic country sovereign democratic country like the u.k. that plainly has to go but once we get rid of it if we can change it then i think there is the real prospect of making progress very rapidly indeed so the backstop has always only been a last resort we don't need this last resort and we're saying we might find that agreement in the next 2 years but i'm sure find it in the next 30 days why shouldn't we that would take a big step forward and we have to pull all the stars out and make sure we manage to do it however this does work on the assumption that we have clarity about the future relations between the u.k.
8:03 pm
. and i think this clarity is emerging. more from the. date of his chief political chorus a political editor joins us from the chancellor's office is welcome to tell that there is the german government to mr jobson's appeal for the backstop to be dropped . it isn't frankly machall points towards brussels whenever that is brought up and she has already said in the past that it was an easy way to get rid of the backdrop and that would be to find common ground to find a common solution to the issue of northern ireland of voiding a hard border there so it's interesting that today we see her mention of kind of a 30 day period to potentially work this out it's interesting that we see boris johnson seeing the onus on britain to come up with a proposal but essentially you have not seen a shift of position just a bit of leeway potentially for boris johnson. the news outlets seem to have seized
8:04 pm
on this 30 day timetable for solving everything i'm just explaining to us how it appeared what it's about well to me it actually seemed like a spontaneous comment by the german chancellor and she clearly has also been in the past with comments we've seen in the past also her annual press conference where she did make that comment that she should simply be resolved in the backstop is off the table so she believes that the solution can be found to the issue of avoiding a hardboard and to me it sounded like she spontaneously meant to mentioned a 30 day period that is something boris johnson described as a blistering timetable but the question is of course well why not if there is common ground the 2 leaders now have a de facto deadline that we will all be watching very carefully to work with and we
8:05 pm
will be of course be reassessing how far they've come in finding some kind of common ground of course this is about more than just the u.k. germany or no e.u. summit showed you'll until october so even with the best will in the world one could these final efforts to find a solution to the box don't actually happened. well nothing in the u.s. ever failed because of a scheduling issue for saw if the leaders were close to some kind of deal and that would be a deal in the future relationship that would not necessarily mean opening the exit agreement and that's really what where they are still at loggerheads then surely the european council of e.u. leaders would come together but in the past these talks failed because britain simply didn't come up with a proposal so it will be very interesting to watch what boris johnson comes up with if he comes up with anything it shows a willingness to try and make some headway but when
8:06 pm
a reporter asked this chances specifically basically saying look you're still stuck on the very issue whether you will open that agreement she basically said well we don't have an answer for you there so i'm not going to read tea leaves here but this suggests to me that if. if london now starts pushing proposals on the table that would be seen as headway and that might allow some room for maneuver in brussels again because. the german chancellor thank you 4. we'll take a look now at some of the other stories making news around the world the u.s. government is to remove the legal barriers limiting the amount of time the children of migrants can be detained department of homeland security secretary michael lehman on wednesday i'm not certain the so-called florists a dream limits the detention of children to 20 days will be allowed to expire.
