9:00 pm
this is d.w. news live from berlin britain's prime minister challenges the german chancellor over breakfast on a visit to the german capital boris johnson presses that led back old to reopen the deal negotiated with his predecessor and scrapped the e.u.'s plan to avoid a hard border in arlington britain is preparing to leave the block on oct 31st donald trump puts his trip to denmark on ice the u.s. president cancels a planned state visit with a tweet after the danish prime minister called trump plans to buy greenland
9:01 pm
observed. after a week at sea italy ends a standoff and allows the open to arms rescue ship to land authorities say they're investigating conditions on board that forced some migrants to attempt to swim from the boat to shore. i'm sumi so much going to it's good to have you with us we start with the latest chapter in the break that saga right here in berlin right now orse johnson is meeting with angela merkel and he's trying to convince the german chancellor to reopen negotiations over britain's withdrawal from the e.u. he is demanding that the e.u. scrap the so-called irish backstop which is a box current plan to avoid a hard border in ireland both johnson and bacco have expressed optimism that britain can still reach a negotiated deal. to leave the e.u.
9:02 pm
but johnson has insisted the u.k. will depart deal or no deal on october 31st. no breakfast protesters shout as british prime minister boris johnson arrives investment for the 1st time since he took office a month ago he met with german chancellor angela merkel his go to reopen negotiations on brics it we in the u.k. want a deal we seek a deal and i believe that we can get what we can do the shop windows i think is that is the phrase but clearly. clearly. we cannot we cannot accept the current withdraw agreement. johnson wants to scrap the backstop a clause designed to prevent the return of customs and security checks along the
9:03 pm
irish border the e.u. however has ruled out renegotiating the existing breck's it agreement is good. but also there are 2 parties one is the u.k. wants to leave but the other one is the good friday agreement must be accounted for the good friday this is not only coming from the u.k. but also e.u. member ireland that's part of our european position and now we must bring both positions together with the 2 in something. both merkel and johnson seem optimistic that a solution can be found but time is running out and if no side moves the u.k. may head for a no deal i said at the end of october. more of the story now with alex forrest whiting brags that analyst is with us here in our studio hi alex just looking at of the words we saw from both leaders there where does that leave us in terms of brics negotiations what did you take away from what you saw today
9:04 pm
well in a way there was no. substantial change i would say however. some tickets to the british side in the british press there has been movement on the so-called irish stop and that is the backstop is the sticking point in all of this that this is what boris johnson has said again and again that he and his government cannot accept the irish backstop is an insurance policy if you like that's been would be put in place by the e.u. at the end of 2020 if they were not sure what the future deal would be between the u.k. and the e.u. it would prevent a hardboard overturning across the island the republican filing which is in the southeast part of the e.u. northern ireland is part of the u.k. so you can see where the problem is there now boris johnson says. it is anti democratic it would mean that the u.k. including northern ireland would have to stand a customs union they couldn't strike deals with countries outside the e.u.
9:05 pm
they want to scrapped so far there's been no movement on that the e.u. has said it isn't possible however today and going to marco and said look we're always open to alternatives you come up with them the u.k. perhaps you could even do it in 30 days a bit tongue in cheek but that has now been the mantle that's been set for boris johnson and the u.k. government coming up with alternatives have been 30 days and perhaps there will be a deal that can be achieved before the 31st of october or did we see or hear any alternatives to or the backstop then but could possibly be reached in 30 days good question it's been asked repeatedly of boris johnson and again he was vague pointing to some report that one of his ministers has come up with there was nothing substantial there the other issue is that within an hour of that press conference the french president a man you must call had said again nothing can be reopened and has all they do what
9:06 pm
you said earlier today we were hearing from the elysee palace that they think that a no deal breakfast is the most likely outcome so whether there is anything that can happen before the 31st of october that's not much time does seem unlikely at the moment from boris johnson's perspective what can he take home from those talks about the americal today well he can say to his own side and to the u.k. look i've done my part i've gone off to berlin i'm trying to strike a good deal for the u.k. and then tomorrow he goes to paris to try to do the same thing there so he can say he's done his bit he can say look we've potentially got movement over the backstop angela merkel though has been perhaps a bit clever by saying that it's not our responsibility to come up with these alternatives it's yours so i think whatever happens boris johnson can say he's trying to bet if you doesn't get anything. from it he can say it wasn't my fault it's the e.u.'s fault it's berlijn it's paris it's brussels now angle or merkel can
9:07 pm
say well we have offered you something but it's your problem and you have to come up with a solution all right our brags it analyst alex forrest waiting breaking it down for us thank you so much. now the issue of the irish border as we heard has been one of the biggest sticking points in the braggs of negotiations and some fear a hard border on the island of ireland would reignite decades of conflict terry szell's reports from northern ireland's capital belfast. one of the most popular activities these days for visitors to belfast is a troubles 2 or 3 hogs 37 people hospitalized there were horrific injuries there were people loss of limb guides like paul donnelly navigate what's called a history of terror but many fear history could be repeated deadly clashes between protestant supporters of british rule and catholics wanting to unite with the republic of ireland were largely ended 2 decades ago by
9:08 pm
a power sharing deal known as the good friday agreement but now the looming prospect of a new deal breck's it could mean the return of checkpoints along the irish border and that has people like donnelly warning that former anti british guerrillas known as dissident republicans might have bandon the peace process with the end of a hard border that gives the public comes a contemporary justification for their violence you know it's not just ideological saying this is not struck down any more look at those groups along the border this is deferential and what they see is just part of them from the rest of. their. worries over a hard border and the loss of other rights are compelling even some former pro british loyalists to consider the once unthinkable uniting northern ireland and the republic of ireland the good friday agreement means northern ireland can take a vote on doing just that belfast new lord mayor john finn you can wants to make
9:09 pm
sure citizens are well educated about their options while hoping they'll back unification his party she unfeigned openly lobbies for that it's a cause that colored his light. he was just 9 years old when he saw his father a prominent republican human rights lawyer shot dead by approve british paramilitaries despite getting death threats himself as he took office in may and you can believe the time is right to move forward. doesn't automatically mean that unification will happen but what i do think is that it means that the conversation because the conversation has already started not just from people within the north but people all over the island of ireland and certainly within europe as well 50 years after the bloodiest period in northern ireland's history a time when moralize by so many walls and gates around this city no one i spoke with believes that addressing the question of a united ireland now with leave the country back into that kind of sectarian
9:10 pm
conflict at the same time no one is completely confident it won't. billy hutchinson a city council member from the progressive unionist party served 16 years in prison for 2 sectarian murders hutchinson says he's rejected violence but he's worried others haven't what i concerned about is the people will try to use a result from breakfast. a result from the border post as an excuse to start another war. at queen's university belfast professor colin harvey says people are anxious about the possible impact of unification but also frustrated with britain the british government has behaved recklessly and their response to play in relation to this region for some time people look at what's happened in britain around breitbart and it's been picked on. balik altered disastrous mess that the british system sees are falling apart and i think there's a real feeling on this island that we need to maturely and sensibly manage and plan
9:11 pm
a conversation whatever the outcome of this you know find a sort of agreed way forward recent surveys suggest most people in northern ireland prefer to stay part of britain for now but those who want to united ireland say they are in no hurry expecting a chaotic to help their case. u.s. president donald trump has canceled a state visit to denmark because the danish prime minister refuses to talk about selling greenland to the us describing the proposal as absurd greenland is an autonomy territory and belongs to denmark it is the biggest island in the world its government decided greenland is not for sale cancelled by a tweet all the plans were in place in copenhagen for a state visit by the u.s. president but then donald trump announced on twitter he's not coming after all denmark is a very special country with incredible people he tweeted but at the danish prime

9:13 pm
americans can trade resources with greenland just like any other country they can treat with us but our country is not for sale. there's been a u.s. airbase on greenland since the 1950 s. but global powers are increasingly interested in its vast oil gas and mineral reserves. let's talk about this with a reporter and native danish peter dial he's with us here in our studio hi peter where the prime minister there saying she's not angry she's disappointed what else are you hearing from the story well the prime minister may not be angry but a lot of people certainly are they see this is completely disrespectful earlier today the former speaker of parliament sculp was fuming on twitter she blasted president trump for his quote insolent way to treat the danish people in the queen and called it a complete lack of respect and class more than the head of the danish social liberal party even pointing to this is proof that the us under president trump simply can't be trusted he called trance behavior quote preposterous and said this
9:14 pm
shows why. ever denmark should consider the other you members as close allies not the u.s. and he then signed off by calling trump completely erratic you know not everyone is asked of set though unlike president obama president trump is not very well liked in denmark i was there just a few weeks ago. before this whole greenland debacle started the main danish public broadcaster assets viewers how they felt about trams visit 70 percent almost said that he should stay away so i can only imagine what that number must be like to there how did it even come to this i mean how did donald trump come to this idea of buying greenland in the 1st place well it's not quite clear why trump all of us and city sights on the greenland you know now. probably only knows but it is not a completely novel it is certainly not as stupid as it may sound the us kind of 1st discovered the benefits of greenland i'm going to go back in history here
9:15 pm
a little bit you know during world war 2 denmark invited us to set of military bases to fend off and scare of potential enemies geographically greenham is located close to europe and russia so with the cold war heating up in the wake of world war 2. president truman at the time was quick to kind of see the benefits of that so we offered denmark $100000000.00 so that's about $1300000000.00 in today's money to buy greenland denmark rejected that offer but it allowed the bases to stay so there is a long history there. while the cold war may be over due political tensions aren't completely completely though and part of that is because of global warming for instance the arctic's heating up that means that new routes new trade routes potentially gotten a lot easier to mine rare earth metals which we use for smartphones computers.
9:16 pm
greenlee just happens to have some of the largest deposits in the world of those rare metals so huge potential there for a businessman like trump all right very interesting stuff there our reporter peter dollar native dane here in us bringing this story to us thank you so much peter for your. not some other stories making headlines around the world the u.s. government has unveiled a new rule that lifts a legal barrier limiting the amount of time children of migrants can be detained department of homeland security secretary kevin mco. and sorry on wednesday announced that the so-called zaurus agreement that limits the detention of children to 20 days will be allowed to expire pro-democracy demonstrators in hong kong have staged a protest at the suburban train station where masked men attacked protesters one month ago activists say they want to draw attention to the lack of progress by police investigating the attack many believe the attackers had links to organized crime. nigerian president will have sworn in his new cabinet almost 6 months after

he was elected to a 2nd term remains minister of petroleum and that is considered the most important ministerial post because oil exports account for around 90 percent of nigeria's sporran exchange. the number of wildfires in brazil's amazon rain forest has hit a record this year according to new data there's been an 83 percent increase in fires compared to the same period last year president job also now says the government is working to control the blazes and accuses environmental activists of starting up. italy's president is holding talks with political leaders in rome to explore possible avenues out of the country's political crisis. is needing with the leaders of italy's 2 houses of parliament and the leaders of the country's political parties the main opposition party the center left democratic party has indicated that it is prepared to discuss a possible coalition with the anti establishment 5 star movement now the talks come
9:18 pm
after the collapse of the previous coalition between the 5 star movement and the far right leak if no new coalition is agreed italy could see new elections before the end of this year. and sander is covering the story from rome here is what he has to say. the government crisis here in italy is in full swing after prime minister coming to decided to step down last night and now the ball is in the court of the italian president said. his obligation will be to find a new strong coalition government this could be made up of the 5 star movement together with the central f.p.g. party instead of the far right the leak but at the moment it is not even clear if p.v. wants to be part of this government. on the other hand has a different plan he wants new elections something he's been rooting for all along and he is quite popular at the moment he's truly polling at roughly 37 percent but
9:19 pm
between now and the earliest election date which would be in october a lot can change and president is doing his best to find a solution as soon as possible as he says possibly even tomorrow. staying in italy now for the continuing saga of the migrant rescue ship open arms 5 e.u. states have now agreed to take in dozens of refugees who had been stranded aboard the boat off the island of lampedusa for weeks italy had been refusing to allow the ship to dock late on tuesday and italian prosecutor ordered the boat to be seized and the migrants on board to be brought ashore. shortly before midnight the rescue ship open arms was allowed to dock in lampedusa and many of the 83 migrants had been on board for nearly 3 weeks the sympathizers welcome them at the harbor and celebrate their landing. the spanish n.g.o.s rescue ship had been
9:20 pm
anchored a few 100 meters off the coast of lampedusa for days it wasn't allowed to come to shore but yesterday an italian state prosecutor visited the ship with 2 doctors to learn about conditions on board the prosecutor then ordered the ship be seized and evacuated in the evening he began an investigation of an unknown person for abuse of office the inquiry is not centered on the spanish aid organization or the unnamed suspect could be italian interior minister monti salvini instead he was responsible for preventing the ship from coming to shore. it is highly likely that i am being investigated to state prosecutor. has begun an inquiry against me on the one person. and you can imagine with the unknown person might be. a spanish naval vessel is on its way to italy it is offering to take some of the migrants to spain. now indonesia has deployed more than 1000
