we're going to be smart if you want and probably most of the. climate exodus starts september 5th on g.w. . this is you know the news live from berlin g 7 leaders meeting in the french town of john split on how to deal with iran donald trump backs away from attempts to make friends the go between as the west tries to rein in tehran's nuclear ambitions transform mr flies in it but talks with the americans are not on the schedule also coming up. violence grows on the streets of hong kong police call their guns on
7:01 pm
pro-democracy protesters and fire at least one a live shot here $0.30 in water cannons for the 1st time since the protests began. i'm max foster thanks for joining us putting a stop to iran's nuclear program has emerged as one of the most divisive issues for world leaders meeting in france french president emanuel says it's been informally agree he should approach tehran in the name of the g. 7 but u.s. president donald trump denies having even discussed the question in a surprise development iran's foreign minister has flown into the summit friend says mohamed jobs are reef wants to assess the chances of a deescalation intentions. and. mattis joins us
7:02 pm
now from the summit to look at this georg what more do we know about zarif surprise visit. well the iranian foreign minister here was invited on the initiative of his french counterpart to the french foreign minister who welcomed him here and the now it wasn't exactly 0 g. 7 event but rather a friendship went but of course you know the french president has worked extremely hard on the question of the iran nuclear deal that the united states have walked away from and he has been looking for ways to reviving it and had a meeting with that foreign minister just before the g 7 meeting and now he's back in town merkel was talking about iran in a news conference earlier what did she have to say. it was quite interesting
7:03 pm
because she really clarified that of course it wasn't at the end of the day a coincident by the peril event as she called it but it is clearly linked to the discussion leaders had the night before where she said everyone agreed that tensions should be eased and that dialogue should be revived with tehran and it is the in light of this that the french diplomats decided to invite the iranian foreign minister to tell him personally to call it a mandate for the french president that was maybe a bit too fast. and g 7 leaders turned their focus also to africa today holding roundtable talks with several african leaders let's take a listen to what the leaders of france and germany had to say after those discussions humanists today in view of the increase in terrorism but the 5 somehow members and the german chancellor decided to expand our support and launched a new initiative for security and stability in the salad border security the
7:04 pm
stability there was a mall. but today it's clear the situation is and this is a race against terrorism we cannot say right now that the security situation is getting better therefore we must act quickly germany is very invested in this important initiative and we will dedicate the full breadth of our resources to it. so garrick what can we expect from this initiative. look the french president if you want created the strategy here by broadening the agenda bringing in topics like the security situation in the sahil because you knew that on questions like iran and world trade there will be not much of an outcome so what if you look particularly on the sign there are some concrete results that germany and france have had a number of donor conferences where a number of countries already pledged money they do want to bring in training for 7
7:05 pm
battalions from 5 states in the area or who all ready to be trained but needs money and that's money the french president and german chancellor angela merkel made clear is technically there now it is the donors will have to send it so the project is still open for other countries to join but effective few what they want to do is train that army so that they can fight terrorism in the saw him reach. mathis in berets thanks for that. now to some of the other stories making news around the world. israel says its air force has hit targets in syria to prevent a drone strike on its territory warplanes struck overnight south of the syrian capital damascus israel's prime minister claims his forces thwarted an attack by iran and syria says it shot down the incoming missiles. in greece 2 people have
7:06 pm
been arrested in the south of the country on suspicion of starting wildfires one of them is accused of having done so 3 times hot dry and windy weather has helped fuel the fires across the country almost 700 firefighters have been deployed in the past 24 hours. and authorities in spain say at least 5 people have been killed when a helicopter and a small plane collided over the island of new york a. local government of spain's valley ark islands confirmed there was at least one child among the dead. and violence has again flared in hong kong as pro-democracy activists take to the streets for a 12th straight weekend of protests police deployed water cannons for the 1st time since the protests began 3 months ago officers also turned their guns on pro-democracy demonstrators and fired at least one live shot crowds are amassing once more in support of hong kong's independence from china protests earlier this week and focused on what demonstrators are calling state surveillance and charlotte
7:07 pm
pill is covering those protests for us she joins us now from hong kong charlotte protesters out in force again today how is the situation looking. we've seen a big escalation in violence today there were 2 big. as you mentioned it appears one police officer find a shot we hearing reports that it was a warning shot but there are images going on social media of police pointing guns that process is something just in the general in the crowd as well that something that's really along people the way speaking to it happened just a few meters from where we are based at the moment residents are out on the streets expressing their concern about such things on folding in that like all night ahead we're hearing as well that once again will be the kind of use for the time as well
7:08 pm
today. and voted on a number of processes started during projectiles at places already one petrol bombs being thrown at police then came to take in response we shall sit in a shopping center take chances being fine people running green economy is back to that crisis is that barricaded themselves into the shopping center the reports of the water cannon trucks going through the streets nearby to the bride and then well that would count with 5 people what was stuck inside the shopping center about what was a peaceful rally here on the day that there's been another escalation in these 12 weeks of protests charlotte child still in hong kong thanks for that. one reason protesters were again on the streets of hong kong this whole weekend had to do with several suspicious lamp posts these lampposts are equipped with
7:09 pm
surveillance technology a lead to allege to have links to mainland chinese tech firms on saturday protesters used an electric saw to cut through at least one lamp post and bring it to the ground over fears that it was a clip with facial recognition cameras that could be used by law enforcement the hong kong government said that 50 so-called smart lighting polls were put in place to collect data on a traffic and weather that many worried that the government is not telling the whole truth. and our reporter i mean in pieces has been looking into the controversy surrounding the lamppost and will be shedding a little light on it protestors think the government is using these lampposts to spy on them ok fine what proof do they have well they've been controversial since they were put up earlier this spring but once they toured these lamppost on at least this one particular impose the protesters actually broke into the box that was up there and the camera capsule to look at the technology because they don't
7:10 pm
trust the government's statements about what's actually going on here so what's interesting is that they were able to look to see for themselves what was in there nothing was super surprising nothing of the government had said wasn't in there but they were able to take photos of the make and model of this technology and posted the telegram so these images have been circulating on telegram there's been seen wife i routers and their obvious the from an american company and also batteries you know cameras the cameras you can see from the ground of course but one of the most interesting items and one of the most controversial items was actually a b u locator that's a bluetooth light locating devise which you can see here on the screen right now that's made by a firm called tic tac tech and this is been the source of controversy because the protesters say that this company has a link. to mainland china to a company out of shanghai and they believe that perhaps these this information has been picked up on a bluetooth locator for example if you have
7:11 pm
a cell phone and you walk by here and you're blue to this and on in those are you are basically even easier than facial recognition technology and very revealing technology that i say next phone i mean it's better than what has the hong kong government said about this well hong kong government from the beginning said that this information that's being collected here is only being used for things like traffic pollution things to make the city a smart city but they actually issued a statement about this bluetooth locator because it became so controversial after all this speculation and they said that the company that makes it is actually a local small enterprise based in hong kong that is implying that they're not going to be sending this information to china so they want to quell protesters fears that what's being collected in these boxes there's 50 of them are supposed to be 350 soon that this is not being sent to mainland china which is at the root of these protests that they're afraid that beijing has too much control over hong kong and is there any evidence that the hong kong government is hiding something else well
7:12 pm
of course it depends on how much you believe the hong kong government now these modules these cameras the lamp posts you can see here are set up they could be monster surveillance devices they have all the technology like this bluetooth locator the government said that they're being transparent that this is only being used for specific purposes and there's no reason right now to disbelieve them but of course it goes back to how much you trust the hong kong government as we can see with these protests that's kind of an all time low right now exciting politics but potentially very scary politics i think thanks very much for that i mean he said. turning to sports now in the bonus league of mind smith glad back in a game that pitched 2 best friends against each other for the 1st time as coaches lance's samples and bloodbaths marco are so close they even went on holiday together this summer but for the 90 minutes of this match they went head to head into battle. the league his own version of a buddy movie played out his marco holzer took his charges to says mines ahead of
