the only reason to get out of. this is news live from berlin the g 7 leaders meeting in the french town of johnny split on how to deal with iran donald trump backs away from attempts to make france the go between the west tries to rein in tehran's nuclear ambitions iran's foreign minister flies in but talks with the americans are not on the schedule also coming up. violence grows on the streets of hong kong police pull their guns on
8:01 pm
pro-democracy demonstrators and fire at least one live shot it's already sent in water cannons for the 1st time since the protests began. on nick spicer thanks for joining us putting a stop to iran's nuclear program has emerged as one of the most divisive issues for world leaders meeting in france french president emmanuel mccall says it's been informally agreed he should approach tehran in the name of the g. 7 but us president donald trump denies having even discussed the question the white house also said it was not informed ahead of the iranian foreign minister surprise visit to the summit france says mohammad javad zarif wants to assess the chances of a de escalation in tensions. and georg matus joins us now from the summit india it's
8:02 pm
a gaylord iran's foreign minister has now left the summit what do we know about how his visit went. well ron's foreign minister himself said it will be a tough way but he does see a chance and apparently that is being shared by of the french diplomats here who have invited him on a french initiative he had a meeting with the french foreign ministers for a couple of hours and then he met also the french president and you have to understand that before the g. 7 in preparation for the g. 7 the french president already match with the iranian foreign minister. he also informed president trump that's what diplomats told me and informed german chancellor merkel that he is has a rifle here in order to pass the message on that basically there is agreement here among the chief 7 that tensions should be east and as a communicator if you want that is that that person will be the french president
8:03 pm
a mandate is was maybe a bit too much for the american president but basically everyone agrees here that tensions should be eased and what are the chances that might cause efforts to deescalate the situation will work. well that we have we'll have to see in fact the foreign minister of iran will stay in town the french diplomats here are quite confident that this maybe something will come out of it but seeing as the great efforts of france are to revive this process and in fact to maybe get back the the nuclear court that the united states walked away from to get it back to life. there is a clear of hope at least that is what diplomats have told me here. g 7 leaders also turned their focus to africa today holding roundtable talks with african leaders
8:04 pm
let's take a listen to what the leaders of france and germany had to say after those discussions . today in view of the increase in terrorism but the 5 style members and the german chancellor decided to expand our support and launched a new initiative for security and stability in this border security the stability. today it's clear the situation is and this is a race against terrorism we cannot say right now that the security situation is getting better therefore we must act quickly germany is very invested in this important initiative and we will dedicate the full breadth of our resources to it. so and briefly if you would what can we expect from this. what germany and france want to ramp up their support for and basically an army of from that is that comes from a couple of states from the zion area that already is on the ground but that army
8:05 pm
needs money that army needs training critics however have said that had already been agreed and they really do need to send a money to that reach not only in terms of military aid but also in terms of development aid because once terrorists are gone it is the population that is left behind and you need to take care of these people in order so that these 3 terriers do not fall back in the hands of the terrorists absolutely ok mattis in its thanks for that violence has again flared in hong kong as pro-democracy activists take to the streets for a 12th straight weekend of protests police deployed water cannons for the 1st time since the protests began officers also turned their guns on pro-democracy demonstrators and fired at least one live shot crowds are massing once more in support of hong kong's independence from china protests earlier this weekend
8:06 pm
focused on what demonstrators are calling state surveillance and charlotte charleston pill is covering those protests for us and she joins us now from hong kong charlotte protesters out in force again today how is the situation looking. we've seen a big escalation in violence today there were 2 big festival as you mentioned it is one police officer find a shot way hearing reports that it was a warning shot but there are images going on social media of police pointing guns that process is something just in the general moment the crowd as well that something that's really a long people the ways that you do it happened just a few meters from where we are at the moment residents are out on the streets expressing that dissent about such things on folding in that like all neighborhoods we hearing as well that once again it will be kind of used for the 1st time as well
8:07 pm
today. and voted off the number of protesters started during projectiles at places or at least one petrol bomb being thrown at police then came the take in response we shall sit in the shopping center want to take chances being fired people running green economy affected that person says that barricaded themselves into the shopping center as the reports of the water cannon trucks going through the streets made by the bride and then well that would count with 5 people what was stuck inside that shopping center. was a peaceful rally here on the day that there's been another escalation in these 12 weeks of protests charlotte child still in hong kong thanks for that. and one reason protesters were again on the streets of hong kong this whole weekend had to do with several suspicious lamp posts these lamp posts are quipped with surveillance technology alleged to have links to mainland chinese tech firms on
8:08 pm
saturday protesters used an electric saw to cut through at least one lamp post and bring it to the ground over fears that it was equipped with facial recognition cameras that could be used by law enforcement the hong kong government said that the 50 so-called smart lighting polls were put in place to collect data on traffic and weather but many worry that the government is not telling the whole truth. and our reporter. has been looking into the controversy surrounding the lamppost and will be shedding a little light on it protesters think the government is using these lampposts to spy on them ok fine what proof do they have well they've been controversial since they were put up earlier this spring but once they toured these lamppost on at least this one particular lamp post the protesters actually broke into the box that was up there and the camera capsule to look at the technology because they don't trust the government's statements about what's actually going on here so what's
8:09 pm
interesting is that they were able to look to see for themselves what was in there nothing was super surprising nothing of the government had said wasn't in there but they were able to take photos of the make and model of this technology and posted the telegram so these images have been circulating on telegram there's been missing wife i routers and they're obviously from an american company and also batteries you know cameras the cameras you can see from the ground of course but one of the most interesting items and one of the most controversial items was actually be you locator that's a bluetooth light locating device which you can see here on screen right now that's made by a firm called tic tac tech and this is been the source of controversy because the protesters say that this company has links to mainland china to a company out of shanghai and. they believe that perhaps these this information is being picked up on a bluetooth locator for example if you have a cell phone and you walk by here and you're blue to the set on those who you are basically so even easier than facial recognition technology and very revealing
8:10 pm
technology that i say next phone i mean it's better that what has the hong kong government said about this well hong kong government from the beginning said that this information that's being collected here is only being used for things like traffic pollution things to make the city a smart city but they actually issued a statement about this bluetooth locator because it became so controversial after all this speculation and they said that the company that makes it is actually a local small enterprise based in hong kong that is implying that they're not going to be sending this information to china so they want to quell protesters fears that what's being collected in these boxes there's 50 of them are supposed to be $350.00 soon that this is not being sent to mainland china which is at the root of these protests that they're afraid that beijing has too much control over hong kong and is there any evidence that the hong kong government is hiding something else well of course it depends on how much you believe the hong kong government now these
8:11 pm
modules these cameras the lamp posts you can see here are set up they could be monsters surveillance devices they have all the technology like this bluetooth locator the government said that they're being transparent that this is only being used for specific purposes and there's no reason right now to disbelieve them but of course it goes back to how much you trust the hong kong government as we can see with these protests that's kind of an all time low right now thanks very much for that i mean he said. now to some of the other stories making news around the world . president of france says the g 7 has agreed to help countries affected by the wildfires raging in the amazon rain forest as fast as possible brazil's right wing president so you're both so narrow has begun deploying tens of thousands of troops to deal with the blazes. paris is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its liberation from the occupation a parade featured historic vehicles and many participants dressed up in the
