every morning but. i don't want to go to her is equally dangerous. this job gives people not so so they can plant crops and trying to eat. floods and droughts with climate change become the main driver of mass migration you could write any apocalyptic scenario if you want and probably more typical. climate exodus starts september 5th on t w. this is d w news asia coming up deciding who is a citizen in india the border state of affairs on this about to publish a register of citizens people didn't live to there for decades are worried they will become stateless plots. when your father becomes a target of the chinese state we talk to the son that we get intellectual growth see.

i'm melissa chan welcome to news asia thanks for joining us it's a list that decides who is indian called the national register of citizens it was 1st created nearly 70 years ago and a 3 year push for an update is almost done those efforts have been concentrated in the eastern state of. the government says its aim is to weed out illegal immigrants from neighboring bangladesh. but any flaws in the system can have far reaching repercussions for genuine indians some whose families migrated over from the indian state of west bengal activists say that most likely to be impacted are muslims they fear being left off the final list and becoming stateless while demand for such a register of citizens has been
3:32 pm
a longstanding it gained steam once prime minister modi and his hindu nationalist party came to power in 2014. travel to some to find out more. shocking how early a mammoth task he has to reassure thousands of his fellow residents of assam that they want to be stateless soon. this family was recently left off the draft national register of citizens for n.r.c. . it's a government that identifies long term residents of india and excludes those considered illegal immigrants from bangladesh. sharjah who is frank telling them their chances of making it onto the farm list are slim. they would have to appeal a decision against them. if they were born of a beloved we don't have enough money to go to the tribunals my father is a daily wage labor our financial condition isn't good we have
3:33 pm
a lot of money worries. sharjah have works tirelessly to help those excluded understand the people working through the appeals process. it isn't simply the financial burden that these on these families. it is also an emotional drain to have to prove something that hard to find their identity. for my ancestors were indians how can i be wrong about the issue this is why i'm so saddened by this it's very difficult for me to fight these cases where he has a lot of money and. in his effort to help sagar has dealt with don't let's be influenced already. the 1st was in his own home. they thought everything was in order. but 30 out of $33.00 members of his family were left off the draft n.r.c. already they have spent thousands of rupees to attend hearings on the question that
3:34 pm
preoccupies those excluded as what would become of them sharjah who wonders if indian authorities would create a village of so-called foreigners make them 2nd class citizens or perhaps even strip that a student writes and only grant work permits. whether they're in india no matter i am a genuine indian my grandfather is indian my father was born here i was born here why would we accept this whether there will be protests. critics of the n.r.c. have said it would heavily target been the only speaking muslims on the assumption that they are from bangladesh a muslim majority country. yet many of those excluded and off lists are migrants from the indian state of west bengal. the nationalist b.g.p. government insists this is a way to oust illegal bangladeshi immigrants not genuine and here when they hear
3:35 pm
articulate is their party we need the n.r.c. because many illegal bangladeshi intruders have entered with wired up. as a result the rights and identities of the indigenous people of assam have been threatened . the copper of our own a lot of the stories on the ground show otherwise for many people here and uphill battle is only just beginning. for those left off off the final list of citizens this may well be the last resort for the tribunals like the so on are being set up of cross the state to feel the previous from those who have been excluded and they were the far through the worst these exclusions. people can ultimately take them all the way to the supreme court but such a limb the abuse process is challenging. they get a good lawyer or do they need resources they need money and most of the people
3:36 pm
below who struggled to society for them it will be hard to gather that resources and if i did legal battle. in homes across asylum that is only one thing left to do we. as the government finalizes the names of those who deserve to be indian a core identity of millions hangs in the balance. china has come under a lot of scrutiny and pressure over its detention of about 1000000 people in its far western territory of sheen junk as a reminder the vast majority of those held have been weekers an ethnic muslim minority beijing claims the group harbors fundamentalist separatists and terrorists in some cases that has been true but not according to governments and human rights organizations around the world for the vast majority of wiggers in fact not only

have chinese officials gone after ordinary people they have systematically gone after weaker intellectuals' artists and writers it appears to be a strategy to break their cultural identity here's a closer look at one case. if you want to crush a culture you come for people like you see. this now this is closest family can get to him. my father was. just being a normal weaver intellectual trying to preserve our culture but before all this after the arrival of office party secretary everything changed a gifted poet and intellectual rosy earned praise for promoting the weaker culture and its people in chinese society than in 28000 he was arrested and sent to prison . just appointment of this new party secretary really turned
3:38 pm
to full scale oppression and full scale of the mating of any kind of that they don't like. the new secretary is this man the most senior communist party official in xinjiang province he helped to oversee a suffocating crackdown on muslim leaders a turkish minority up to 1000000 of them are held and we had to keep in camps the chinese government says it's driving out religious extremism human rights activists say it amounts to cultural and ethnic cleansing. it's extraordinary that china is effectively getting away with arbitrarily detaining a 1000000 turkic muslims and not really paying a price for it rarely do we have the luxury to say anything at all. i'm trying to let the world know that my father is not some. people that is. trying to
3:39 pm
support our government pays just normal we were people decently good people that's just trying to preserve our culture and the earth which for years rosie's writing gave voice to the weaker people now he's lost his his son is determined to find it . we have couple turkey in the sun in the report you just saw are joining us from the united states your father is in prison and you haven't been able to hear from him at all is that correct. yes my father was taken into prison back in october 2016 and i was not able to hear back from there now since that. and usually if someone has a family member in prison you can still visit them but that's not what's going on in china is it you know that's not what's going on in china after my father's father's initial arrest we called every phone number that people call the people family vehicle friends people anyone that we think might have
3:40 pm
a link with the government that would help us to find about my father was locked up that we couldn't even know where my father was locked up for more than a year he was held in a state secret location for more than a year and. not to mention need like talking to him week we don't get we didn't even know where he was at that time for more than a year and so when you think about that how does it feel i mean how has it been for you and your family. so when i think about it was a devastating. it has stayed in effect on my family when my father and use their arrested we as i said we didn't know where he was beaten to know about condition and for the most part we don't know what will he be charged with although my father is all in the eyes of the current government chinese government he was already convicted before his arrest we didn't know what kind of flight charges or sentences
3:41 pm
will there be or my father not knowing what's happening not knowing why happening that is very devastating thing for us and after my father because my father was the . one who was supporting us financially after my father's arrest i have to halt lie all the fans to support my family so my dreams my dreams to get into medical school for now it's on a hold. so our life has changed so much after my father's arrest how would you characterize what's happening to the people in change to we there's and other ethnic minorities there. right now right no a days what's happening in our region it amounts to ethnic cleansing in my views and because of so many others because when we talk about ethnic cleansing we might think that they are the government is systematically eradicating people or killing
3:42 pm
people off but in this case the people are taken into concentration camps and when they although they are not like physically destroyed right but when they. but they are not coming out coming off from these camps and if they if the 2 lucky people come out from camps no local not not long after they come out they are dying we heard reports of that and most of them are not no longer mentally stable they are not like normal functioning human beings after they come out from these camps so although they are not physically destroyed but they are mentally destroyed and no longer. able mentally able like normal functioning human beings and i think that also could you know could categorize the behavior as as should and should be categorized as ethnic cleansing come on thank you.
3:43 pm
