this was marquez joining elections in colombia last year. at both of those to all colombians let's do everything possible so that the war does not return to colombia . picking up his guns again has only made that return more lightly. germany's far right political party known as the alternative for germany is expecting big gains in 2 state elections on sunday in saxony the a.f.p. is polling just behind the center right c.d.u. the party of angle americal and things look even gloomier for the governing party in brandenburg the social democrats will talk to our political correspondent in a moment but 1st this report on the political landscape in these 2 key states in eastern germany. 2 eastern german states are going to the polls and the federal government is holding its breath as the surge of the far right populist a.f.d. could really shake things up saxony dresden is the capital germany's eastern most
2:04 pm
state has about $4000000.00 residents and is doing rather well economically with the auto industry and high tech but saxony has also developed a thriving right wing scene a year ago right wing extremists occupied the streets of chemists for days violent crime motivated by right wing extremism is that a record high. saxony is governed by a grand coalition of center right c.d.u. and center left s.p.d. on the party the c.d.u. has led the government here since german reunification it may remain the largest party but is said to lose votes especially to the far right populist a.f.d. and state premier may struggle to put together a new coalition. i'm a democrat i'm against a minority government i've also said i won't coalesce with the f.t. or the left party for reasons of policy and personnel the rest of us will have to
2:05 pm
be able to talk to each other and be able to form a government as democrats. brandenburg potsdam is the capital the state surrounds berlin and has about 2500000 inhabitants brandenberg is also doing well economically if it weren't for the lignite problem the mining apparatus may grind to a halt soon germany plans to phase out the coal industry which many people here rely on for a livelihood in brandenburg the s.p.d. has also been in power since reunification it's currently in coalition with the left party but surveys suggest that it's unlikely that the 2 parties can continue to govern together for. work flat out for 161820 hours a day so that the far right populist don't become the most powerful party here. the s.p.d. and the a.f.d. are neck and neck in brandenburg but the far right populists are unlikely to take power none of the other parties wants to join
2:06 pm
a coalition with them for years the a.f.d. has benefited from feelings of insecurity and of being neglected in the east it has taken on the slogans of the civil rights movement in former communist east germany . berlin grand coalition partners the c.d.u. and the s.p.d. especially are looking to the state elections with apprehension. the s.p.d. is suffering from twins link support and membership. and the c.p.u. is no longer getting through to their core voters in the east not a good sign for them ackles grand coalition. the likely winners of the state elections apart from the f.t. will be the greens their forecast to get record results in both saxony and brandenburg. decisive regional elections this weekend in germany let's bring in our political correspondent simon yeah good morning simon what makes these 2 elections important for germany as a whole i think is
2:07 pm
a couple of things is the continuing decline of the traditional parties and the continuing roy of the far right a f d c you and the s.p.d. the 2 parties that make up the national government in berlin and finding it harder and harder to appeal to their traditional base we saw that in the european elections earlier this year in the polls around these regional elections suggest that support is going to drop again this weekend and incidentally as at the euro elections a lot of that support is going to the greens now the other thing is that the far right a f d r on the evolve. there was thought that they could be the strongest party in both of the eastern states but they all represented around the country now they're in the national parliament the bundestag in the lane and you know this could be another model starting on their advance so these are the sort of
2:08 pm
coned 2 is of german party politics in 2019 is there a chance that this far right if the party could end up becoming the strongest party in one of these 2 states and sex and your brain are ok well there. there are some new poll numbers in in saxony seemingly no. cd which currently heads the regional government there is only 32 percent in the latest poll that's 7 and a half percent ahead of the f.t. . it looks good for them in brandenburg maybe because of the social democrats who lead the government they. are and incidentally they've been in power since german reunification in the one point the 1990 s. they have more than 50 percent the social democrats now they're neck and neck with the far right a f.t. both on about 2122 percent how have the tea managed to garner so much support in these states what's their appeal. yeah there are many reasons i think
2:09 pm
it's a complex picture but a couple of things i would say a lot of people in the eastern states feel perhaps left behind by economic developments in the last 2030 years a lot of these places you've got a lot of younger people who've moved away there's been a decline of industry and perhaps that explains why some people are more willing will or unable to adapt to changes incidentally one talks about the relationship with unemployment there used to be high unemployment in the east in fact in these states today it's quite a lot lower so the pictures more complex another thing to say i think is that people who grew up in the g.d.r. in communist east germany they grew up in an undemocratic system so when they see a post up perhaps from the f.t. saying something like take let's take a country back they're less inhibited than some voters in the west might be about
2:10 pm
saying well that's the message of the i can understand all vote for it despite the undemocratic invocations that it may have we're also seeing the greens gathering support in the states as as they are nationwide they are expected to increase their share of the potence actually run a burka is there a chance that they could end up entering government in the states they certainly have shown i think it's really quite likely the coalition of c.p.u.'s but he would need the greens to get in government the picture in brandenburg as i said is much less clear we'll have to wait and see what happens on sunday our political correspondent simon yon thank you as always. for watching d.w. news still to come a face that any scientist could love the newly released images and it's based on could change our understanding of people injured humans evolved. on earth shattering moment for germany's most successful soccer team by an munich president only heard us will quit his role at the club in november so fast

2:20 pm
imposed a further 10 percent tariff on another $200000000000.00 worth of chinese imports the list of items affected was $200.00 pages long and fast forward 8 months to may of this year and the tariff on those goods rose from 10 to 25 percent and now then in august now trump up to the ante once again announcing a fresh 10 percent tariff on $300000000000.00 worth of chinese goods some of them starting in september others not until mid december and that would be after the holiday shopping season only then nearly all chinese goods entering the u.s. would be subject to a punishing levy china for its part has retaliated in kind but now the 2 sides may be getting ready to talk again. the statements from the chinese trade ministry sounded like china is eager to end the trade war they stated that they'll

be discussing the tit for tat tariffs with the u.s. side in september. through fall of funders china would have plenty of opportunities to implement countermeasures but in the current situation we believe that we should 1st discuss suspending the newest tariffs on chinese products were some $550000000000.00 us dollars we have to make sure that the trade war doesn't escalate situations. the next round of us punitive tariffs goes into effect on september 1st international markets see beijing statements as a positive signal that both sides can find a solution to the conflict stocks rose and u.s. companies like apple that are dependent on chinese components and apple in-house study shows that the technology giant's dependence on china has grown strongly in recent years almost 48 percent of the parts for apple products now come from china . and as has some of the other global business stories making news. is apple

highly accommodative. writes let's talk a little bit about that with russia they are financially market correspondent in frankfurt now i remember and it's getting actually stronger now that mario druggies the cheap money policy has come under fire under criticism again and again now christine legarde wants to continue that will that be effective in any way. well it's difficult to say because the media certainly needs a push whether that push should come in the form of watching the money it's difficult to see because so far the interest rates are already in the negative territory and there are already concerns that perhaps the e.c.b. may be running out of ammunition when a serious economic downturn happens and then there are also concerns about the impact it is having on banks it is certainly hitting the profitability of these
2:24 pm
banks who are actually having to shell out money to pog their funds with the e.c.b. so that's another concern the other concern is perhaps it could create financial bubbles housing bubbles and it is in a way incentivizing those companies which are inefficient profitless and this isn't incentivizing those people who save and that is like turning banking on its head now what are the markets looking for do they hope to see more cheap money or do they think enough is enough. well the markets always love to get money in because they feel very is the panacea for all the problems of the economy and any more money is all visible commend the markets have in fact priced in for that it cuts by these to be not only that they already are. i think and for the quantitative easing by by these he when it will start buying bonds from the open market and as far as the markets are concerned but have them i just get it

middle of an agricultural region in northern germany since 1990 the town has lost around 15000 jobs and about the same number of people have moved away those that are left often have long commutes to distant jobs in places like hamburg or berlin so the outlook is bleak the mayor wants to change that. instead in your food doesn't consist of torsional i imagine that the government can support these structurally weaker regions by establishing special economic zones so on and i wish that was all they could give merchants craftsman and small and medium sized enterprises tax breaks or other benefits the focus to go in. in the meantime data for the next order have been entered into the machine me here all mauer of the son of the owner has been working for a while at the company he's monitoring the cutting he knows that more procedures have to be digitalized but their internet connection is not fast enough.
