i'm calling asman welcome to the program we begin in hong kong where thousands of protesters have gathered for the 13th straight weekend defying a ban by authorities clashes broke out between police and demonstrators with security forces deploying water cannons and firing tear gas at the crowd. after 13 weeks of mass demonstrations the crackdown takes on a docker's shade for the 1st time police fired water cannons loaded with blue dye staining frontline protesters and promising to prosecute them. he said want hong kong residents not to participate in the ban demonstrations thousands defied them. for much of the purpose of hitting the streets today is to tell the government you can scare us this way we also have to restate our main demands because i've never responded to them call them a young boy that was you don't. back on the street prominent activist joshua wong just to do. after being arrested then released compared to activists being

threatened by police being beaten by those police caught my eye the price i paid this really was so i had no reason to give up was the was it began with a hymn demonstrators calling their gathering a religious meeting in an attempt to circumvent the ban on protests. the chorus grew louder as thousands joined in a peaceful march. was. but the tune changed as the scene turned chaotic with tear gas from police fire bombs from protesters and by night burning barricades blocking the streets. this weekend marks the 5th anniversary of china's decision not to allow full democratic elections in hong kong yet the flames of resistance burned on the

earlier i spoke with the w.'s charlotte shelton hill about the situation on the ground in hong kong. why the moment where in the busy shopping districts causeway they are in the day this is bustling tonight again it is the scene of carnage once more at the moment there is a huge police presence as i'm sure you can see behind me a short time ago police deployed tear gas at large amounts of protesters who had moved 6 over him many of them setting up barricades some of their barricades being satellites police then charge through the protesters were largely just but since then though we've seen a number of arrests over the struggle in the days of protesters who were left behind they were bundled into police vans what we're hearing is those protesters now moving on to another location this is very much a caps and mouse game called has been repeated not just tonight but throughout these 13 week protest is gather in one place and then they move on and police call

it and take us in multiple different locations to be clear what is happening in hong kong is not an isolated place and this is somewhere that is that is extremely widespread charlie we were just seeing pictures there of those fires that were set in the streets that you mentioned is this a sign do you think the protesters are now more willing to use violent tactics and they were before. we've seen the protesters on the frontlines using the fire multiple times in the possum recent weeks we've seen them throwing molotov cocktails the fire projectiles essentially at police that's something that we saw again today we have to say that in that setting lights to bins in the streets that's something we've seen again today but there have been it seems many more this evening as protesters do chai and build up those barricades to try and prevent the police from getting closer to them it would seem this is potentially you could see this is an escalation in violence on both sides police

today using that water cannon once again the 2nd time within 13 weeks the last time . last sunday but for the 1st time not blue dye was used by police as well crucially people think to to mock to identify those protesters who are on the front line i say that they can be found later and possibly arrested today's protests come a day after more activists were arrested but that doesn't seem to have deterred most protesters there in the streets. that's right a number of high profile activists were arrested as well as legislators yesterday in a big sweep unprecedented in this may have been as so far cause 900 people have been arrested over the last 13 weeks but the fact these people who were as a guest today was so high profile did along a lot of protests is nevertheless they have been out on the streets today very peacefully as you're on today munching defiance in the face of the threat of arrest
6:06 pm
something the police have said that they do face this is all true and on with their eyes process police have repeatedly make clear that anyone who is on the streets today is acting illegally nevertheless lot of people on the streets today they told us that while they fear repercussions from authorities what they fear more is what they see as the encroachments from beijing on their rights here in hong kong views charlotte charleston phil in hong kong for us thank you very much. let's get you caught up now on some of the other stories making news around the world demonstrations are underway in london against boris johnson's move to suspend parliament critics have accused the prime minister of trying to circumvent parliamentary democracy similar protests are taking place in other major cities across the united kingdom. a sudanese court has charged ousted president omar al bashir with possessing illicit foreign currency and with corruption a lawyer for bashir said he denied the charges despite admitting to the court that

war with pakistan the government says the list is meant to crack down on illegal immigrants from bangladesh but many of those affected say they've been living in a sum their entire lives. they have been waiting for use to see the results their future cost into uncertainty by government to christians to very originates now with the census concluded many are some residents are facing a dream truth their names don't appear on india's new national registry of citizens to divide between who is officially indian and 2 is not much separate from elise. it's worrying the names of 2 of my brothers are not there it worries me i don't know why they're not there. but 2 boys and a girl are not on the list but they're under the age of 10 and my wife's name is also not in the list. and very worried i feel bad in my heart i'm feeling very

sad. these are not isolated cases it's total of 1900000 people were excluded from the list many of them have been living in this northeastern state their whole lives the region is a hotspot for cultural and religious tensions ever since the start of neighboring bangladesh its independence war back in 1971 many unregistered refugees crossed into india the hindu nationalist government considers them and the generations that followed illegal migrants authorities say the national registry of citizens is supposed to quote weed out foreign infiltrators and with that east tensions within are some small to cultural population but critics fear the new citizenship lists could not be used to target muslims and deport them and those who did not make it onto the list have 120 days to peel the decision a last bit of hope for almost 2000000 people who just want to be allowed to live it what to them is home. this is how can someone to talk to.

my mother always tells me. to smile and put on a happy face. she told me i had a purpose. rafter unsure of the world. i'm one of the most notorious villains in the comic universe is back or of course talking about the joker and the movie the joker is from airing today at this year's venice film festival this time batman's arch nemesis gets his own standalone film exploring the origins of that famed character and well going by the trailer it's safe to say it doesn't and well joining us with more on that is our film guru scott roxboro he is in venice for us scott's the joker is back it's an iconic villain
6:11 pm
he's been played by by jack nicholson heath ledger among others what does joaquin phoenix now bring to the role of the joker. yet well say this is an iconic superhero character comic a villain in the in the in the batman universe but while jack nicholson played the joker sort of us sort of a homophile clown for the political over the top showman and he pleasure famously paid them in sort of an amoral force of darkness really sort of a fully formed corps of darkness. very very different and he basically betrayed her almost as an ordinary man who just is pushed too far and just snaps this film is much more about about mental illness and about sort of a dystopian society that pushes people too far in some ways this film roots of the joker in a much more realistic world and that makes actually just. transformation into this
6:12 pm
for reference a villain much more terrifying and much more authentic in my pit stop we have a superhero movie at the venice film festival i mean that was probably unthinkable right what made the organizers change their mind and their minds and have the joker . yeah you're absolutely right it would've been unthinkable even just a couple of years ago to have a superhero movie premiering this the oldest one of the most glamorous film festivals in the world but i think it's 2 things one i think the festival's recognizing that superhero movies are the dominant film genre in the world right now if you just look at how many films are coming out in terms of the box office people watching these movies and with this movie the joker they found a film that actually fits their sort of art house aesthetic as well because this film despite it being a comic book movie despite it being about a. evil villain is very much rooted in the 1970 s. indie film tradition if you can believe it this is this film was produced by martin scorsese and it feels a bit like a martin scorsese film it's got
6:13 pm
a lot of elements of of taxi driver of king of comedy and they're definitely referenced in this film so despite it being comic book movies by having those elements of a comical movie in it it still is very close to that sort of in the gritty tradition that is very much here here at home in venice sounds like something i might want to check out honestly there's a few 1 other films at the venice film festival which ones have conjure up. this one caught my eye was another film that sort of crosses the line between mainstream and and an art house ad astra starring brad pitt it's a space movie but again takes place in our space the story is a very personal and very dark very much like an old 1970 film except that in outer space definitely number one to check out. right there for us in venice thank you very much. our sports now and in the bundesliga champions
