airport as pro-democracy demonstrations continue for a 13th consecutive weekend. i'm michael oakley thank you for joining us on september 1st 1939 germany invaded poland the date is regarded as the beginning of the 2nd world war and the early hours of german warship opened fire on the polish garrison in the vesta plot to wreak peninsula in what was then the free city of dancing at about the same time bombs rained down on the small polish town of yemen killing $1200.00 civilians it was the german look as 1st air raid on poland and the 1st of many war crimes to come ceremonies have been taking place in vienna and marking the moment 80 years ago when history's deadliest conflict began.
10:02 am
4 35 am. those sirens are the same as the ones that sounded 80 years ago announcing the bombing of the town by nazi aircraft an attack which would start the 2nd world war. no words could ever make up for the disaster that followed but today india early hours poland husted its former attack of germany in the 1st of a series of ceremonies of remembrance oso aimed at highlighting the friendship between the 2 countries. after the war it took decades for the neighbor countries to normalize their relations and reconciliation is still an ongoing process just launched by his. superiors what do you think it is easy. to see how it's done
10:03 am
the our stuff to go to the ocean and lots to a town that 18 years before schools it was destroyed in the blast just yalit fashion by the people. from their own nation from previous generations lots of each from the generation of their fathers and grandfathers. do you think it is easy. stanage is boys aged to stand here and look into the eyes of the survivors to look into the ah it's all over for us as the children's and grandchildren of those who had died just gave. commemorating world war 2 in a country which lost 6 millions of its people to come fleet will never be an easy task and german president. called or deny as he underlined that germany would face its past. zines to give this kind of rest assured that there is not
10:04 am
a single german who is not moved in when they reflect on this trail of barbarism this also holds true for those who reject these memories to feel such a strong sense of shame that they seek to escape into denial and aggression and you know what german could only look at today doing what it was saw on pound. or at auschwitz or other places where the show took place without feeling shame. and the exercise in contrition and a show of unity there does get us president so so stressed a necessity of finding new ways of remembrance at a time when fewer and fewer eyewitnesses remain to recount the horrors of the war. i'm joined now by a correspondent simon young in warsaw so i mean greetings to you what does this anniversary mean for poland after all these years. well i think this
10:05 am
is incredibly important anniversary for poland 80 years on since the start of the war and poland of course was the 1st country that really faced the onslaught from nazi germany hitler's plans to seize ladens around the room for the german people as he described it in the east of europe and the waste wastage that was laid to cities like yellow and but also here in warsaw another city that was very largely destroyed. with hundreds of thousands of people here and as you said up to 6000000 across poland who lost their lives the memory of that has not gone away and it's aged into the personal stories of many poles that's well they'll be focused on not just this event here in warsaw today but i think at commemorative events that have being held across the country something how important is it for
10:06 am
germany to take part in events like this. but i think it's extremely important for germany to be here it's something that's been happening for a number of years now the german president. has been in poland on this occasion a number of times in the past this year it's going to be an especial focus because certainly not only president steinmeyer will come from berlin but also chancellor merkel as well it's very unusual head of state and the head of government to be here together or to indeed to attend any such function together so that's a special sign i think of the respect in the deep importance that germany feels and the message that they want to send to poles on this occasion you know in his
10:07 am
speech the polish. president said that frank. presence there was a form of moral compensation is that enough for sure germany do more. well there are dimona in poland particularly from the. polish government under the law and justice party that's now in power. to make financial reparation and indeed there's a parliamentary commission here in poland that's been looking into exactly what kind of demand might eventually be made it's due to report very soon and that. which germany really rejects saying that these matters lie in the past they've been dealt with in a formal or to ridicule sense financial sense. shouldn't even if they haven't been dealt with in a moral sense of course in the past lives on those claims do cost something of
10:08 am
a shadow perhaps over these ceremonies it remains to be seen whether that issue will be mentioned in any direct way in any of the speeches today. that was d.w. simon young simon thanks so much. now to some of the other stories making news around the world in germany voters are heading to the polling booths today in the eastern states of saxony and brandenburg surveys have predicted a surge in support for the far right a.f.d. party the results could put pressure on germany's governing coalition of the christian democrats and social democrats. china and the united states have begun imposing additional tariffs on each other's goods and the latest escalation of their bruising trade war that has sent shock waves through the global economy american consumers can now expect higher prices on consumer items like clothing toys home goods and electronics. and hurricane durian
10:09 am
a powerful storm threatening the bahamas and the southeastern coast of the u.s. has strengthened to a category 4 forecasters warn dorian could be the region's worst storm since category 5 hurricane andrew killed $65.00 people and destroyed 63000 homes back in 196-2992 i should say. police in the u.s. state of texas say at least 5 people including an active shooter have been killed in a gun rampage at least 21 others were injured in the cities of odessa and midland police shot dead the gunman who was firing randomly at motorists and passers by after hijacking a us mail truck the shooter has been identified as a white man in his thirty's although his motives remain unclear it's the 2nd mass shooting in the state of texas in a month just 4 weeks ago 22 people were killed by a gunman in the city of el paso correspondent alexander vaughn naaman had this to
10:10 am
sense whether yet another mass shooting would have any impact on u.s. gun laws. there seems to be a sort of a momentum when president trump said that he wants to have stricter or universal background checks but then he backed down and then again he said that he may be willing to have universal background checks so the problem is that you always have a feeling that there is a momentum and that but then nothing happened and we actually have to add that the democrats they passed quite weeping connections that would require background checks for all gun purchases also in on the internet or at gun shows but the senate didn't do anything so it's really difficult to believe that that quote change. hong kong is braced for another day of disruption after violent clashes last night between protesters and police authorities had banned
10:11 am
a planned march on the 5th anniversary of china's refusal to allow fully democratic elections in the territory but that didn't deter people from gathering parts of the city's subway system ground to a halt as police and demonstrators clashed on the metro out on the streets police used tear gas and water cannon the also sprayed blue dye over the crowds to identify individuals who had taken part in the demonstrations protestors responded with gasoline bombs the our correspondent in pil is in hong kong for us charlotte what's it like in hong kong at this very moment. well as a couple of things going on today off of that very violent night last night i'm outside the british consulate in the main where huge camp crowd has gathered here a short time ago many of them essentially calling for supports from the british authorities for what is going on here in hong kong there is also an enormous crowd
10:12 am
gathered at hong kong's international airport i'm sure you remember earlier this month protesters tried to disrupt the airport as much as possible the goal that being that if they disrupt flights disrupt the airport they will gone to international attention for what they say is that because that is something that they are trying to do once again today we've been seeing images of protesters setting up blockades we've been getting warnings from police that they will be coming in riot police as well there's some suggestion that protesters some protesters had cleared the way today warnings are in place other is a still gathered now trains to the app courts have been suspended we're hearing that roads have been blocked buses not running as well i think very dramatic people have images of people walking to and from the airport so this is going to be another extremely dramatic day here in hong kong today surely you say dramatic and it's been 13 weeks of drama i mean this is now going on consecutively with china
10:13 am
obviously mainland china joining more and more pressure behind the scenes is that dampening the public's spirits or is that in fact making them even more resolute. i'd say one thing that's so striking about these 13 weeks of protests is how they have managed to maintain the momentum that is in the face of what they say is a very fierce police crackdown now if anything that crackdown by police and warnings from beijing and from hong kong authorities have only served to make them even more angry even more resolved to take to the streets weekend after weekend images last night in particular have really fueled protests today and are likely to stay with people over the coming weeks they really were extremely striking those images of police entering a train station they were using pepper spray it's believed fired that firing
10:14 am
the people inside the camp carriage there are these images of these people cowering about pepper sprays being used datsuns as well being used to it's unclear whether or not that whether or not that use of course was targeting people who were even taking part in the protest yesterday which was banned by all stores he's or whether or not it was people who were simply on the train who were caught up in the violence now police have issued a statement saying that the violence was in response to protest is causing damage to train stations assaulting civilians as well police said the protesters say it was simply an excessive use of force by police the latest an example in a run of examples they say of police mishandling the situation that's. on the streets once again in hong kong trawler thanks so much. and a reminder of the top story we're following for you. colin has been
