[000:00:00;00] plane . this is d w news life from the far right makes major gains in 2 state elections in eastern germany but mainstream parties managed to hold on for victory in saxony and ran the project of results show chancellor angela merkel's christian democrats garnering the most votes and saxony in the governing social democrats are likely to take 1st place in brandenburg also coming up to poland march 80 years into the 2nd world war 2 leaders from dozens of countries joined ceremonies in warsaw determined
9:01 pm
president grandfather steinmeyer recalled the war as a german client and asked her to get. into the emotional day in belgium as noticed one of the members on tong means that the driver was killed in a crash on saturday shall declare wins the formula one plum tree to dedicate a victory to step friend to. play. on the welcome to the show. germany's far right alternative for germany make significant gains in 2 state elections became the 2nd strongest party in regional parliaments and both sex me and brandenburg germany's mainstream party suffered sharp drops and support but were able to maintain their top positions let's take a look at the numbers these are the latest project that results based on
9:02 pm
a partial count of the vote the results at this stage for brandenburg show the social democrats who currently govern the state at 26 point one percent maintaining the top position while losing votes the christian democrats are at 15.7 percent a heavy loss for chancellor angela merkel's party the left party is at 10.7 percent also a significant loss and the far right comes in at 23.7 percent putting them at 2nd place the greens take 10.6 percent a very good result for them regional party the brandenberg united civic movement free voters take 5 percent the business friendly f.d.p. at 4.4 percent gaining some but not enough to win any seats in the state parliament and other parties completing the picture at 3.8 percent we also have projected results for you from saxony chancellor merkel's c.d.u. which currently governs in the state comes in at 32.5 percent coming 1st while suffering losses the left party is
9:03 pm
a 10 point one percent losing almost half of their voters the s.p.d. junior coalition partner in the state drops to 7.8 percent significantly down the far right comes in at 27.8 percent placing them 2nd and those numbers keep creeping up as the results come in the greens take 8.4 percent very good for them here to the f.t.p. at 4.6 percent won't get any parliamentary representation here either and the others account for 8.8 percent of these projected results. so now the big question is who will the c.d.u. in saxony and the s.p.d. and brandenburg team up with 4 to form coalitions one thing is certain this by their games it won't be the a.f.d. . was. c.d.u. party leaders breathed a sigh of relief and saxony chancellor merkel's party has been in power here since german reunification and they've retained control despite suffering considerable
9:04 pm
losses now that we've done it this is a message being sent out from saxony tonight a large majority of people who are standing up in a positive way for this country who want something the friendly saxony has won many thanks to all of you but it will be hard for saxony c.d.u. to form a coalition the center left s.p.d. and environmentalists greens did too poorly state premier michelle catchment has ruled out a coalition with the far right f.t. the state's 2nd strongest party which picked up a far greater share of votes than in the last election. the f.t. also won more votes in brandenburg also becoming the 2nd strongest party there but they fell short of the victory they hoped for was. in hindsight but this result this prognosis shows one thing very clearly the a.f.d. is here to stay. politics will no longer be able to be made by going around us the center left s.p.d.
9:05 pm
remains the strongest party in brandenburg but they need to coalition partners to be able to rule. it means that we continue to face great challenges in this country to reach out to the people and work together with them for that is my goal for the coming years as well. there's one thing that almost all parties can be happy about voter participation has risen considerably and both german states. are more on this let's go straight to the alternative for germany b.f.d. election party and brandenburg where do w.'s thomas barrow is to. ending by in the town of vetta thomas what's the reaction there been to the results. the reaction here has been over a bit of disappointment i would say because the he was hoping for much more they were hoping to become the strongest party hearing rhonda but at the same time the reaction has been very positive if you speak to politicians here the you have these elections in the small town all of the bad many of them will so present it as a victory for them as
9:06 pm
a victory in particular because of the a if these results you're in front of because of the result in the east also in soccer city and because of the fact that they have been able to release the number of votes that they have compared to the previous results so you can see that there are 2 strikes and you're going to want to do a bit of disappointment but they're also trying to turn it around and presented as a victory for them. a bittersweet victory ahead of the vote polling indicated the f.t. could overtake the s.p.d. as the biggest party and brandenburg why did they not succeed. an interesting question will be what happens next in particular because all of the parties have clearly stated that they do not want to make coalition with the a d. so it's up to the social democrats who ended up being strongly spotty once again here in brandenburg plan form a coalition for the it is absolutely clear that they will have to play a role in the opposition and they knew that probably in advance even before the
9:07 pm
results were in and they have indeed prepared themselves for that so it's up to the social democrats to try and find coalition partners and it will certainly be a very difficult process not only here in brandenburg but also in socks and given the fact that election results have become so difficult to organize and you don't have those take 10 parties having big results in both east and german states thomas parel reporting from the town of banda in the state of brandenburg thank you very much. let's continue right on to sack the nice capital city of dresden where our reporter king brady is following the elections for us which party is celebrating most they are the a.f.d. which made significant gains or in the studio which remains the strongest party in saxony. well sirius definitely the day the 4 right alternative for germany party that celebrated the most tearing saxony tonight of course these are significant gains for them if anything just reiterating the
9:08 pm
successes that they've had in other. similar elections in recent months both in the european election also just a couple of years ago as well in the national elections at the c.d.u. . in on the other hand there it's much more sigh of relief of course something to celebrate for them they've still managed to retain that title as the strongest party here in saxony a title that they hold for the past 3 decades now since the fall of the wall but they the coalition with the social democrats here simply doesn't have a leg to stand on for the last 7 governments here in saxony have been that very famous combination here in germany the so-called grand coalition but right now like in many of the states here in germany that is exactly that coalition between the conservatives in the social democrats is looking anything but graham so of course a lot of food for thought cause for concern as well despite holding on to that
9:09 pm
title has as the as a strong his party here in saxony but still something to think about at the national level for. government which coincidentally is made up of those 2 big tent party the social democrats and the conservatives. have the almost triple their share of the vote and saxony how do you explain their popularity in the state. well what's unique about this day and also brandenburg where you just said to thomas just now compared to at least some of the other states in western germany for example is this feeling of neglect. in areas of former east that were in parts of former east germany they feel like they've been left behind in the 30 years since the 2 germany's reunited in 1990 and don't feel that their voices have been heard of course a lot of locals here around areas like the city of dresden lost out
9:10 pm
on some of that life prospects were some of those industries were closed down as well after the german after the to germany's every united in of course another issue as well something always at the top of the agenda for the f.t. is that rather storage migration policy and they've managed to be able to feed also on the fears of people here particularly following that influx of migrations here migrate migrant sorry into germany 3 nearly 4 years ago now but interestingly the percentage of migrants here in sac saxony is only going up by about north point 2 percent really not a lot it's all but still something that the a.f.p. has managed to use to its benefit capering and reza thanks a lot and to get a sense of the bigger picture let's bring in our correspondent michele a man who is at the headquarters of mackerels conservative c.d.u. party here and berlin i want to play you
9:11 pm
a clip from the scene to you general secretary and then we'll talk and your due to looking back on these election campaigns today we look back on 2 difficult campaigns that had to be carried out under difficult circumstances. well to. day we have mixed feelings when we look at the results both joy and disappointment. and. so nice on my mind my thanks to all the people who worked on the campaigns who put their heart and soul into the fight. of your. mind my thanks also go to the voters who chose the sea do you today and place their trust in us. on the border and today i send my thoughts and thanks to all the see do you candidates who
9:12 pm
put their heart and soul into the party but in spite of their tireless efforts failed to win election to the state parliaments. and make a law that's what the secretary general said what effect will the result in brandenburg and saxony have on the federal government here in berlin. well that's what the size of relief in the building behind me the c.d.u. had courses was all about 6 pm when that signal came through those 1st exit polls indicating that the c.d.u. had not been beaten by the far right if t. and that their coalition partner here in central government the s.p.d. had been beaten by them at least in one of the 2 states and that was the clear signal that this would not have a big impact on the stability of the so-called grand coalition for now but there are more state elections coming up and 2 going on in october and there's a lot of internal issues going on in the s.p.d.
9:13 pm
but at least this was seen as a serious risk factor that is pretty much off the table there for now. the senate then the social democrats are of course part of the grand coalition and have been reacting to today's results let's hear from. some some there's still work to be done none of us are pleased with the f.t. is result and for the next year we'll be focused on reversing that. f.u.d. are very concerned about their decline in overall polling what do you think they will be taking away from today's results. well they will also be relief that they weren't dethroned in the state of. where they have been in government since the 1st elections of the reunited germany almost 3 decades ago so relief there as well but when there's talk of a lot of work to be done that's other words for what we all seeing here as
9:14 pm
a trend the decline of the so-called big tent parties and at the same time we saw big gains for the green party its own leadership now except that it is now taking what was known or is still known as de mint to the center ground in german politics so there's a lot of pressure on both big 10 parties currently in government here at the federal level. and in the election some of the risks felt for performance by the c.d.u. would affect party leader and a good come come about one's chances of becoming chancellor of her chances improved or worsened after today. i would say is she too would be relieved today i think it's a bit too early to say because her leadership is being questioned also for a whole range of other regions and she just gained more political weight by becoming defense minister but one thing is to sure she still has to prove that she
9:15 pm
can really strengthen the c.d.u. again and stop what is a decline at the ballot box but for now the c.d.u. is here to say that's a clear signal tonight probably the only big tent party that is not in immediate crisis it's a very different picture with the social democrat s.p.d. that is currently struggling to work out who will lead it into a process of renewal. and d. is gaining popularity in all of germany but they're especially popular in eastern germany why is that. well there is actually there was a lot of polling done on this and a lot of it sounds contradictory for instance more than 80 percent of people in those states that went to the polls this weekend have a positive outlook on their own economic future at the same time amongst voters for
9:16 pm
sure upwards of 70 percent feel like 2nd class citizens here in germany a lot of that data simply doesn't tale in that something the people in the headquarters also of the c.d.u. behind me are having big headaches about and they talk about having to deliver more at the local level and this certainly is also the sense that i got following the f.t. in during this election campaign they are particularly good when it comes to addressing fears that other parties on to dressing quite clearly at least for upwards of 20 percent of the people that went to the polls this weekend. political editor many thanks. let's now take a quick look at some of the other stories making news around the world hurricane dorian has made landfall in behind most of bakos islands bringing large waves and heavy winds the storm has grown in size to

the territory. with train service also disrupted arriving passengers had no choice but to walk. was really striking about this 13 week right as movement now is how the president really have managed to keep up the immense and they keep reinventing themselves finding new ways of gaining international attention what we're seeing at the airport is one of them we know that they've tried that tactic before it failed because they're right it's working is it being too violent at that half or they're now trying a different way disrupting transport links to the app this really is an ever evolving and ever changing the. demonstrators say they won't give up but hong kong has been in crisis for 3 months now with ever growing concern about how beijing will respond. dozens of leaders from across the world have joined ceremonies in poland to mark the 80th anniversary of the start of world war 2 polish president under

a duda says there are still lessons to be learned from the war and his german counterpart from describe it as a german crime that his nation will never forget. 80 years after the war began the heads of state of poland and germany shake hands together they remember the crimes that began on september 1st 1939 jimmy squat on the view today we honor all the victims of the 2nd world war. we bow to them and with gratitude we kissed the hands of the veterans so we're meant to combat on the. pier on pilsudski square in the middle of warsaw was where the saxon palace once stood it was destroyed by the nazis the german president had clear words he's like. this war it was a german crime. the history of this place is testimony to that. early in the morning the 2 presidents had met in the town of

9:23 pm
point i think there's tons of very good moment in the really a very symbolic moment because with. being in poland but also today. so the president of the bonus track was in berlin also taking part in one of the celeb ration is come i'm waiting to begin the 2nd world war this is a symbol i think that is giving suit to poland but also with a utopian society showing we know it's out of the 2nd world war began in poland it began with the attack on the polish military but also on polish civilians and this is very important because this also shows we have to know that the 2nd world war was not only about the holocaust of all it invading other countries but it was also about the having a new kind of war that was also against civil society how would you say the trauma of the 2nd world war still weighs on polish society today a lot and this is i think maybe it's even getting more and more because actually
9:24 pm
it's only 30 years when we can speak freely and openly about what's happened during the 2nd world war both the nazi terror and of course the soviet terror and the men a lot of questions that come up and there are a lot of open still open books that the to be discussed and i see. also it's connected with the with the witnesses die away and there was a will in poland to really talk about it maybe from different perspectives many also from very nationalistic perspective but i think this dialogue has to be kept in a speech the polish president under a data set that. presence at this event was moral compensation is that enough or could germany be doing more i think that the voice in poland is not is very strong saying that we need to have again a discussion and restitution and i can understand that the german society and also politics is a little bit more reserved than that and maybe more critical but having in mind
9:25 pm
that. 50 percent of poles are saying that the question of restitution is not done yet and they feel that's not enough happened in the polish gentleman lation that and also have it in my thoughts in polish society if you talk about german polish relations the history of the 2nd world war is still number one or the subject number one this is this hint is a signal that we need to continue this discussion so maybe it's not about the number but it's generally above the discussion about what happened in the boat. the war about different aspects of the 2nd world war and of course its consequences for . relations but also for political relations new up or on countries to catch thank you very much for your mouth thank you very much to the wonderfully and now we're very bremen have grabbed a 32 win at home against in the early sunday game at their 1st point of the season
