this is news coming to you live from berlin mainstream parties come out on top in 2 state elections in eastern germany but the far right alternative for germany makes massive game securing 2nd place in both saxony and. will break down the results for our political correspondent also coming up hurricane dorian wreaks havoc in the bahamas one of the largest storms to hit the island since records began it's now

heading to the u.s. . saudi led air strikes in yemen have killed at least a 100 people through the rebels say aircraft dropping bombs on a detention center killing most of the prisoners. and in the bundesliga braman battles their 1st win of the season after faltering against. we will bring you the golden. hello i'm terry martin welcome to the program we've been here in germany where the far right party has made significant gains in 2 state elections the alternative for germany became the 2nd strongest party in regional parliaments in both sex saxony and brandenburg but the surge was not enough to unseat mainstream parties which
9:02 am
managed to maintain their top positions in both states. was. c.d.u. party leaders breathed a sigh of relief and saxony chancellor merkel's party has been in power here since german reunification and they've retained control despite suffering considerable losses now that we've done it this is a message being sent out from saxony tonight a large majority of people who are standing up in a positive way for this country who want something the friendly saxony has won many thanks to all of you but it will be hard for saxony c.d.u. to form a coalition the center left s.p.d. and environmentalists greens did too poorly state premier michele catch my has ruled out a coalition with the far right f.t. the state's 2nd strongest party which picked up a far greater share of votes than in the last election. the f.t. also won more votes in brandenburg also becoming the 2nd strongest party there but
9:03 am
they fell short of the victory they hoped for was my side but this result this prognosis shows one thing very clearly the a.f.d. is here to stay. politics will no longer be able to be made by going around us the center left s.p.d. remains the strongest party in brandenburg but they need to coalition partners to be able to rule. that means that we continue to face great challenges in this country to reach out to the people and work together with them that is my goal for the coming years as well. there is one thing that almost all parties can be happy about voter participation has risen considerably and both german states. were here to help us break down these election results we've got our political correspondent good to see you so the far right if the massive surge are of support in both brandenburg and saxony 2 states in the former east germany what took the is gains
9:04 am
tell us about for the far right and the. country as a whole but one has to say that this is a tendency that has been coming for quite a while in other words these results are similar to the results in the european parliamentary elections earlier this year of the results of the german general parliamentary elections late in 2017 so in a sense the f.t. has consolidated his position rather than making additional gains i think one has to say although in comparison to 5 years ago the gains are very significant so what we have now is a very well established right wing party in germany especially in eastern germany and at the same time obviously we have well established parties such as the concerts of the social democratic party who are losing supporters so there is an erosion on the one hand of the established parties and this is a very well established foundation for the right wing parties that has changed the
9:05 am
political landscape significantly in georgia so a wake up call to the mainstream parties in germany let's listen to what the sea views general secretary had to say and you all did salute lincoln looking back on these election campaigns today we look back on 2 difficult campaigns that had to be carried out under difficult circumstances. oh. i'm going to day we have mixed feelings when we look at the results both joy and disappointment. so the general secretary of chancellor merkel's christian democrats speaking there are mixed feelings he says he has what do these election results mean for chancellor merkel's party well mixed feelings in the sense that what would have been regarded as a disastrous results some time ago is now regarded as a success simply because the losses were reduced to such an extent that the christian democrats remain the strongest party in saxony. yes. with
9:06 am
property that it is also in crisis. is no longer going to be a. proxy battle has said that she is not going to stand for election reelection again she has handed over the party chairmanship to a successor to our. current power and who is the defense minister in germany now so the party is in a transformation process and what we've seen here in saxony party went to the right and was very successful in the other state where there were elections and brand new book the party went to the left and was less successful these tensions within the party within the council it was going to come further to before the party is going to need to decide which direction to take on the writs new leader. the party's going to spend a lot of time deciding for itself to thinking about itself thinking about its direction ok let's talk about what all this means for germany's social democrats
9:07 am
who together with chancellor merkel's c.d.u. are governing at the national level we've got a sound bite from shoulders he's the vice chancellor and germany's finance minister let's hear what he had to say. there's still work to be done none of us are pleased with the a.f.d. is result and for the next year we'll be focused on reversing that. focused on reversing the gains of the a f d that's what we keep hearing again and again with the question is how how do the s.p.d. and the other mainstream parties plan to go about challenging the rise well in fact the social democrats are in a very similar situation to the conservatives they also are choosing a new leadership at the moment at the moment they are basically leaderless so they're going to be spending a lot of time basically about thinking about themselves thinking about how they're going to reposition themselves and both of them together obviously still in the
9:08 am
grand coalition there so in the government in germany and for then together this is the question how to stop the rise of the. there are clear indications that the if you vote has been a protest vote that a lot of specially in eastern germany feel that they are in some sense have not been respected by the establishment political parties so they're trying to find issues which will actually speak to these voters these are issues such as the status of infrastructure in rural areas because a lot of voters are from rule areas they're talking about their migration questions they're talking about questions. you know education and so on but i think in the end these approaches and the parties have been scrambling for some time somehow to take support away from the f.t. they have not really been successful i don't really see much success frankly if he
9:09 am
is going to stay at this level full for the foreseeable future and so the status quo has been preserved for the most part the parties that were governing the main parties at least in both saxony and rana berger going to stay in power but they have he came within a hair of becoming the strongest party there at least in brandenburg what's your main takeaway from all there's tons. i think what we have is a political landscape that is a lot more for the established parties and are no longer strong enough to have a majority on the ground coalitions there's going to be coalitions with lots a lot more parties always against the it's going to be very difficult politically in germany in the next few years thank you so much the w.'s hands upon from our political desk and we're expecting a post-election press conference from the far right the party in about 20 minutes from now we'll bring that live to you so do stay tuned for 1st here's some other stories making headlines around the world today hostilities are flaring on the

a back you ation orders as hurricane dorian approaches and as many as a 1000000 people could be forced to leave their homes the powerful storm is forecast to hit the eastern seaboard of the u.s. by tuesday dorian is currently pounding the northern bahamas. hurricane dorian slammed into the southwestern bahamas as a huge category 5 storm packing winds of nearly 300 kilometers an hour officials warn storm surges up to 7 meters high could be life threatening in the low lying island chain bahamian prime minister hubert minister said parts of the island where dorian made landfall were already flooded. is already under water. and. the difference as to the beginning of the st louis ocean begins. being hit by the fact that the storm u.s. weather officials called dorian quote the strongest hurricane in modern records for

the northwestern bahamas the storm's huge size and power become apparent when seen from space like in these nasa images film from the international space station. meteorologists say dorian might be back out to sea away from the eastern u.s. but it might also slam headlong into the southeastern coast. we just don't know when exactly it's going to turn north it could turn north obviously we want to have that turn as quickly as possible to minimize the impacts on florida but if you look at the forecast it absolutely could impact the coast and turn once it hits the coast and so we've got to prepare for that eventuality as here in florida people along the southeast coast are preparing for the impact of one of the fiercest hurricanes for a long time. an airstrike by the saudi led coalition

fighting in yemen has hit a detention center killing at least 100 prisoners according to officials for the who the rebel group local said the building was being used to detain people opposed to the who he's the head of the international red cross and yemen toured the site and suggested the death toll could runs frank and she said the center head around had held around 170 people and only 40 had survived the saudi led coalition said it had attacked a military target. the devastating war in yemen has been raging since 2015 and it's far from over our correspondent. was just there and joins us now funny good to see you not many journalists managed to make it in to yemen what can you tell us about what's happening there right it's very very difficult to receive access to this country took me personal most one year to get inside the country and when i was there i experienced a very fluid situation that comes to the question who is actually in charge of the
9:14 am
in tearing government place which is in aden and in the south of the country when you go through aden and around aden you have to pass through different checkpoints and the most repeated sentence that i've heard by yemenis was then you wake up. in the morning you really don't know who's in charge is it the separatists or dreaming of an own state basically they want to return to situation the way it was up until 1990 when yemen was basically 2 countries in the north and the south is it controlled by the i mean part of the coalition is it controlled but whatever is left of the government and then of course we cannot forget that there are also jihadi east they're active in aden and in the south so within that very complex and in stable situation it is where i met. with in a hospital a very young doctor who said she had a completely different vision and expectation when it comes to the job of being a doctor before she started her medical studies before the war started this is her story let's have
9:15 am
a look for. things can change in seconds at this intensive care unit and this is john not she's 18 months old and has been diagnosed with and malnutrition. between life and death at a. did you request oxygen there is nothing the oxygen bottle and the room doesn't work. the doctor fatuma must improvise it's not the 1st time she has felt helpless. is the only option available for the moment. it's life is now. her breathing is so flat so if it's up to her right away. shift is just beginning the oxygen bottle is delivered after all it will make it many children do not prefer the fact that oxygen cannot always be provided on time is depressing when she began
9:16 am
her medical studies before the war shortages were on her to off. feeling optimistic it was really worth a graduate it's a. good fit. you know what i've got here in the can. happiness comes in small doses here this bother is relieved his daughter is gaining some weight for now they're not enough doctors and most of those here must work unpaid. hospitals cannot cope such as the lack of food in yemen that brings a lot of people especially moderates children to this hospital once they arrive they face another problem the lack of medical supplies and there's not enough space simply the r.t.l. belts for these children. these children are new patients waiting in the hallway for admission. 14 i was not prepared for this level of stress
9:17 am
after 24 hour shift she finally find sanctuary at home photography helps or to unwind at the age of 26 she finds her job overwhelming it makes me feel that i am not still working and just forget it all and live in an all in the hospital i'm starting a new life maybe but there she wants to continue her medical studies in germany her father a geologist used to live there in the 1980 s. papa do you think the war never and will end and show me how you know that it will require a lot of time how long then you have to deal with this is nobody knows but we hope the war ends for a children because the people are suffering and they are in bad shape there's no stability nothing nothing no salary no jobs the usual is the last mission of the in with a future so bleak fatima doesn't know. rocking on paid she wants to continue working as
9:18 am
a doctor to help people but she also wants better opportunities of her own if possible outside of yemen. so it's very difficult just to get access to medical care and you haven't told us more about the humanitarian situation in the country how about is the situation is dire not only in aden in many parts of yemen especially in the north which is controlled by the who through rebels the people that basically you have them yemeni government is fighting since 2014 under the saudi led coalition since 2015 but what's also a problem here is not just having access to food but rather control controlling that food in fact the world food program said that they are temporarily suspending distribution of aid in the worst because they claimed to have been stealing that food and distributing it among their fighters but even if you get close to a distribution site there's still the question do you have enough fuel to go to that site and gather that food for your family so there are lot of situations and
9:19 am
challenges that make that add an extra extra level of hardship to to the situation on the ground now. what comes as as a result of an ongoing war for almost 5 years and i said the 5th year of that human war is developing it has become so complex a lot of people don't even understand who is fighting here against anymore and the people on the ground the only thing that they feel and they also shared with me they just feel abandoned they don't feel just abandoned by their government they don't just feel abandoned by a lack of systemic mismanagement within the country and corruption but also a lack of international help and aid and constant attention to the actual conflict going on for so many years now on the ground stalk about the international dimension to some degree there is a civil war going on in yemen but it's you also it's also a proxy war to some degree with iran on the one side and saudi arabia and the emirates on the other is there any prospect of this coming to an end anytime soon. at this point no 2 to it bluntly spoken because it's not just the proxy war to hear
9:20 am
you just laid out. apparently supported by iran and between iran and saudi arabia or it's not just a civil war between the yemeni government supported by the saudi that coalition but there's a civil war within the civil war developing shortly after i left aden. attacks in aden it's self the separatist dreaming of their own state trying to fill a void that seems to be left behind by the united arab emirates we joined of forces they say in order to help the peace process but at the same time what's happening on the ground their new front front lines opening up so just from me talking right now you realize that it's very very complex so talking about the peace process at this point yes a lot of talks can be made but unfortunately on the ground there's no action no vivid action in terms of their peaceful actually come about any time soon funny thank you so much for bringing us up to date there are huge international

a number of students who are taking part in that strike together i'm sure you can see a number of them behind me dressed in the school uniform still many of them with their faces covered feared and frayed at being identified there are so many repercussions of people taking part in protests here that that people just don't want their faces showing no alongside this rally there is a rally happening at a university university students on strike as well as the general strike employees not going to work either as you mentioned people tried to disrupt the travel service again this morning tried to stop trains there was a very heavy police presence on the platforms to trying to bend that and allow today to run as smoothly as possible clearly the idea today is to cause as much disruption as possible will presumably charlotte some of those students will want to get on with their studies with many of them back at school could the protest movement lose some of its momentum now. oh yes to be clear it's
9:23 am
not all students who have participating in this strike as to whether or not it will lose momentum now the school's about with us a couple of factors that festival is not clear whether or not that this is going to be a one off event the strike does continue tomorrow as well there has been some discussion as well about whether or not they should make it a weekly thing every monday these students not returning to school but one big discussion point here at the moment is what would happen among those students who all back at school who have been taking pot indy's protests a week after week as we know very young people have been on the streets some of them on the front line some indeed of school age have been arrested there is this concern about what happens when you mix these students who are who are pro-democracy supporters and those who haven't been taken to the streets will that be bullying what happens to the children of police officers who the target of so much anger here amongst this pro democracy movement but to be clear so much of this violence takes place on the weekend so these students will still be out to take to
9:24 am
the streets this weekend once again should they choose to well we sall scenes of police brutality over this past weekend how are people in hong kong reacting to that. there is an awful lot of anger among pro-democracy supporters about what unfolded on saturday we saw days really dramatic images of police entering train carriage easing battens against passengers it was unclear even whether or not they've been taking part in the phrases that they are whether or not they would just caught up in the violence now rather than have not put people off the fear of being hurt and of course the very real fear of being arrested instead it seems to be fueling this movement even more people who are so angry emboldened even to take to the streets to find what they say is the encroachment of beijing on their rights here a in hong kong and anger against the police that. they say mishandling of this

teens. this is the w. news these are our top stories but for right old turning to for germany has made strong games in regional elections in the east of the country but they failed to win control of their states as mainstream parties fought off the populist challenge a chance to see the e.u. remains the biggest party in saxony her center left coalition part of the s.p.d. party retain its top positions in brenham are. and right now we're waiting for an a.f.p. press conference to get underway here in central berlin d.w. chief political editor mikaela is there jaime kayleigh the far right if she saw a massive surge of support in saxony and brandenburg on sunday how are the mainstream parties explaining that. well they are
9:30 am
saying that the a.f.p. clearly succeeded in mobilizing voters that is something that the naked statistics really tell us that former nonvoters in their droves support of the far right a decent theory they've tapped into resentment and discontent towards those established big tent parties because the big story of the night really was the continuation of those big tent parties are going to have to see to you and the social democrat s.p.d. losing ground and both getting a black tie once again at the ballot box but failing to become the strongest force which they were aiming to do. roll can we expect to be emboldened for right d. to play now in german politics well as the d.v.d.'s ship is starting its press conference here behind me.
