a culture of fear at 10 downing street in terms of leadership style you focus on communication within businesses do you see a problem in the british government. well we've had headlines hair over the last couple of days that have included the chancellor as media adviser being escorted out from downing street by an armed police officer we have conservative and he's threatened with the sack if they go against the government tomorrow now my research is in the business context and i look at choices that we have around speaking up or staying silent and one of the questions i ask in organizations in my research is what happens when you speak up round here and recently i had one organization the response to that question was you just sit there now i know so with that response would be the same in british politics at the moment but if it would be then there's quite serious consequences. and when there is such

a culture of silence one of the consequences. we focus really on 3 consequences really a firstly if people can't speak cop they're obviously not sharing issues around problems and not highlighting areas of misconduct and then the festa leaders know about things is usually when it is on the front page of the newspaper for all the wrong reasons and reputations are in taxes so that's one reason 2nd reason is we need people to speak up when we need innovation and ideas and i dog is that the current situation and i mean certainly calls for some of that and i think the 3rd reason the silence is a problem in business but similarly also in politics is that we know that people's opinion knowing that their opinion counts is really linked to ords motivation and then performance we also saw some headlines in the newspaper that talks about

civil service motivation being very low at the moment and falling and those things take quite some time to recover from. briefly do you think there's anything the british politicians can learn from business leaders and the special cards right i'll. well in business for quite a few years we've talked about what we call of the context volatile. complex and i'm big u.s. and i think those full words probably describe the bricks in the process fairly well at the moment in that kind of context what we call a heroic leadership style which is where certainty is advocated from the top can be quite a gamble certainly in business context when you're faced with this sort of situation . can be that what we call listening leadership where facilitation and mediation skills are crucial can be more effective in bringing multiple diverse perspectives together so from

a business perspective we would probably say that that kind of leadership style is a gamble making rights professor at holt international business school thank you very much. a thing in the u.k. it's been called the unhealthiest place in britain with high rates of alcoholism and low life expectancy now the seaside town of blackpool is preparing for life after brags that by working on its resiliency and positive thinking. school can be awful you know so can teachers. and blackpool is well peoples of west cliff primary are very familiar with those sentiments blackwell has one of the highest levels of child poverty in britain as a result many kids like resilience they don't know how to overcome difficulties or take on challenges like joy and generally is teaching them the art of dealing with crises so that they come out stronger a lot they still is just normal everyday ordinary ways of coping sometimes the

those behind projects like resilience pathway made of 42 paving stones with thought provoking statements like engage mentors and be brave it's the work of head start a network of schools and local action groups together they're driving blackpool's resilience revolution. they've grown in confidence they believe they have a purpose and a voice now in the town in a sense of belonging here so that's the biggest thing but we do have some really early findings so we know that approximately 90 percent of young people he was supporting his self harming don't need to go back through the crisis care that all sounds too good to be true and yet the effects are clear take 12 year old car in for example self-proclaimed super hero someone who tackles things head on my create my own resilience great skill. that enable here 7 students and staff at home to come to cameron blackpool is developing courage discovering
