and their families has been a topic of heated debate the 1st orphans of i.a.'s fighters have already been brought back to germany but a strategy for dealing with adult ottis is yet to be decided we look now at the story of one woman leonora and her father who was trying to get her back. clear as to the whole time you're caught up in your own problems forced to ask yourself why or what for how come walking is or. might messing ask himself why you know 1000 times his daughter has been gone for 4 years. and this is your own child would rather be with terrorists than with you and she even thinks it's a cool. nora left him a voice message soon after she arrived home only gets. them and also they have. fast news or is ok in those it's a she goes from i'm going to have good to come. in syria.

he was seen as one of the highest ranking germans in the so-called islamic state she became his 3rd wife but she and the other 2 wives started fighting and they are also witness the terror groups brutality and after a few weeks she wanted to go home desperate to help her father went to turkey and hired a people smuggler linked to the al qaeda terror organization. doesn't quit just by the problem they're criminals but i want my child back if i have to stand trial for giving money to a terror organization i gladly go to jail for the main thing is you got my daughter back before it closed up the ship this can people back home in his eastern german village things became nerve racking my co-ordinated the life threatening mission via his phone and rocca several attempted meetings between leonora and the people smugglers fell through the family lived in fear for weeks.

a facebook group maybe it had something to do with my age and wanting to take part in a revolution i was interested in stupid things now i definitely want to go back to my family. germany's federal prosecutor is investigating the now 19 year old she suspected of spying for islamic states intelligence service and supporting the terror group plan or denies the allegations the german government will decide if and when she may come back home meanwhile her father mike messing can't wait. and if you want to find out more about the story you can watch the full documentary on our view you tube channel that's at youtube dot com slash d w documentary. and other news opinion polls in the united states show former u.s. vice president joe biden leaving the democratic contenders to take on donald trump next year he's ahead of rivals bernie sanders and elizabeth warren but despite being well known to many joe biden is not impressing everyone on the campaign trail . alexandra phenomenas following the race in new hampshire. joe biden's

already had a successful career but here he is again running for president because he says he wants to be in that the country. at town hall in lacanian new hampshire. treasure troves entre many tell us sandmeyer the former vice president but you need to hear what kind of message he has to offer as a presidential candidate which we are in the battle for the soul of this nation is 1st and foremost the reason why i decided to run for side and talks about his accomplishments in the obama administration and the problems he wants to tackle is elected but he doesn't really seem to be focused many of his remarks are diffuse and lengthy the data shows if you do you increase by most i think you need to be more concise in his explanations of things and i was
4:09 pm
a little disappointed that way i was happy with what with what he said and i understood what he was trying to say other people maybe not so much there are a lot of people here there on the fence today he spoke on issues that were important to me and it was about the immigration issues and it was about the violence with the guns and i think that he'll go deftly improve this country and bring us back together again the next morning of the new hampshire democratic party convention biden is one of 1000 presidential hopefuls set to speak here and here is on the pressure to defend his position as the party's favorite. the former vice president is still woolly hat in the race for next year's democratic presidential nomination his campaign has portrayed him as the candidate most likely to be able to beat donald trump but his lead in the polls has shrunk and the question remains how much of his advantage merely reflects name recognition for a man who has been in the public eye for more than 4 decades.

thank the audience gives him a warm all come when he takes the stage. but the supporters of his main opponent senator elizabeth warren and senator bernie sanders seem to be much more enthusiastic and ruckus. we think it was a bit worse the ideal candidate she's smart she's got a plan she's looking out for planet earth as well as all americans not just the one percent what do you think about the frontrunner. mr bragg. anybody the trouble so if he's the nominee i'm behind him but my preference is elizabeth warren order will be the new castle in eastern new hampshire as we did a number of by come pain stuff his advisors say joe biden represents the democratic party but then and you want a party they say that is older and more moderate than many as you know but that

also means that his record is being questioned by young progressives my question is how can we trust that you're going to act on climate on the climate crisis if you're so attending fundraisers that fossil fuel executives like andy goldman are at i want to look at my arch. i guarantee you i guarantee you we're going to end fossil fuel and i am not going to cooperate ok. the activist doesn't seem to be convinced by the moves on it's still early in the primary race and his companion is bracing for a long flight. back we're going to go from politics to sports now to soccer and european championship qualifiers germany's men's he men's team won an important away clash in northern ireland last night only mo talkies here from deep have used force to tell us a little bit more in a lima
4:12 pm
a fix i have relief from the germany fans or at least temporarily but you know look germany still struggle to play ball over 90 minutes but northern ireland a very difficult team to play against they bought a battle very hard and they deny germany clearcut chances in the press have. men will neuer for example was tested on a number of occasions as you see right there and that preston game was just on point but it was this man must sell a house who broke the deadlock after 48 minutes and then of course the search cannot be added a 2nd goal late in the match to seal the deal and the 2 no wind now sends germany to the top of group c. with 3 matches remaining. we we heard from somebody after the match right or and that was the hero of the matter must have a house in book and that's has a lot about team germany when it's your defender that helps you score an important point and secure those 3 points and of course i get it northern ireland it's very
4:13 pm
it's a very tough place to play there and they have a great home record so let's hear what house and bark have to say about that victory. you know. there was a little bit of pressure but we prepared very well it was a real cold and not hurt their fans created a really tough atmosphere northern ireland defended well gave us a few scares but with a bit of luck we want to know. with a bit of luck so i mean germany are now surely in shape to qualify right so it's the top 2 teams in the group that will go through and i think germany will qualify based on their performances i don't think they're going to make it easy for themselves but as for the other question as well i don't think that they have championship team i think they're still very far from winning a title and that's normal because this team is still in rebuilding mode i mean. the germany coach he's still tinkering with the lineups he doesn't even have a consistent starting 11 and championed champions are not made overnight and i
4:14 pm
think we have to be very realistic that this team is very young is very inexperienced and they they don't have a lot of big tournament experience and a lot of these young players still have not reached their peak and of course germany still get to hone their skills a bit more before the qualifiers continue they play a friendly against argentina in october and that's going to be a great rivalry and a lot of work to do a lemo talk a lot of. thank you. a quick reminder of the top stories we're following for you here on news british lawmakers have rejected prime minister boris johnson's call for a snap general election it was their last vote before parliament began a 5 week suspension in a frantic final day johnson pledged not to delay bribes it despite october 31st new legislation that requires him to do so if he fails to negotiate a new deal with the european union. coming up next our

can be deadly strain environment so it requires all these interventions by humans one of these procedures called musing involves removing parasite prone skin phones from lands critics i'm using is painful for the sheep and completely unnecessary. merino wool is popular with european consumers it's used to make sweaters kotze outdoor clothing and even shoes as fit c.f.m. get feels great functional underwear made of marino wall is excellent for turns out of echad less of a and what about the sheep what's important for you and as a not white it's of that's an opt us about the dog would meting they should be

4:23 pm
a merino even appears on a stray unicorns but the dark side of the story is that the sheep bred to produce excessive amounts of wool and there are serious concerns about the way there were against. the 4 paws foundation for animal welfare has been investigating those conditions. as consumers want wool clothing that's fluffy soft and cuddly what's the reality behind all production this is stuff they had 88 behinds there are real problems with animal welfare and australian sheep foreign relations. gong to. activists are particularly concerned about a process called meals ing which is designed to protect shape from fly maggots and these hidden camera video you can see how strips of skin are removed from the

buttocks without the use of anesthetics. as long as i am for fashion you can just imagine how much that hurts to lean is intense years and it lasts for several days. more than 90 percent of all will comes from a shape that was subjected to this procedure. the faster it does you won't find a lot of musing free sweaters in the shops instead of 2nd how can consumers find out whether the sheep have been raised humanely. we went online posed as a buyer and asked german clothing manufacturers and stores with a day off a new zing for the products. we contacted $34.00 companies and got a variety of responses. to don't buy australian wool 6

intend to use mules and free will in the future 10 trust their suppliers who say they don't use musing. 7 try to convince customers that the animals are well treated 5 didn't answer our question for didn't answer at all and no one talked about supply chain transparency. our test indicates that it's tough for german consumers to get straight answers to these questions some of the companies gave us a general response or tried to change the subject to different topics. later at one company said that it had mistakenly sent us a reply intent. for a different question. perhaps official quality assurance can help the consumer initiative is an ngo that promotes sustainable production and consumption with backing from the german government we asked whether
4:26 pm
the seals used by the wool industry provide proof that the sheep are being treated humanely. we have. there are 3 main categories but they don't address the issue of animal welfare that the 4th. notice the blue enjoy is a very well known eco label but it also doesn't deal with animal welfare aspect of . confidence in textiles label focuses on ecological standards for. the global organic textile standard certification has a very good reputation it indicates that producers have met very high social ecological and animal welfare standards in the production chain so you won't find it on products very often. but how can consumers inform themselves effectively about these products if it's funny and. they cannot check these labels which
4:27 pm
provide a lot of information but the companies should do more to take into account the concerns that german consumers have about animal welfare of war. in other words most of these labels provide no information about whether the animals are treated humanely so consumers are still largely in the dark. now we're on our way to restrain where much of the world's wool is produced we want to find out more about that surgical procedure called musing. the state of new south wales is home to about 27000000 merino sheep. they've even been immortalized in statues. of. veterinarians a despommier owned by the university of sydney have been studying the effects of

meals ing. i they're trying to come up with ways to reduce crime during the procedure. because she has recall scheme here very close to the irish ebola if you cumulating in some cases so what we have is takes and you know. i try and make a baby real soon with a dispute here that's shelf life for. the fly strike is a killer option. if there are no folds of skin on the sheep's back side the flies won't be able to lay their eggs there. topical anesthetic reduces the pain in the affected area for 24 hours and also helps the wounds to heal based on this research some sheep farmers have now decided to start using anesthetics join them using procedure.
4:29 pm
animal rights activists demand that mules and be banned outright but the veterinarians here say that's not a viable alternative at this point was. like. after one year of your musing what we had was for you to think that. unless you go fishing. experts estimate the without meals in $2000000.00 she would die each year of maggot infestation farmers are trying to get rid of the skin falls through selective breeding. they will have planted a body. recall especially around the bridge area in the bare breech area hopefully and i fully want it to be moved. how many years do you want to tell you take another ticket. you see you already have still plenty of people. selective breeding does seem to offer a long term solution to the problem of excessive skin folds. now we're on our way
4:30 pm
to talk to a man who's been documenting the abuse of sheep on farms for decades. we're not going to use his full name but peter has worked on several sheep fans and has some who refused stories to tell. these photographs shows that have become injured all seriously ill but have not yet been put out of their misery for economic reasons. the manager is creating animals a lot just because they're going to get another place are they going to get another lamb and unfortunately on these farms which have the bad welfare that's just the mentality. how often does this happen. it's absolutely not everywhere but it's not really a crisis not it's such there's compromises on a lot more properties from what. the industry like to have you. but now and no one's going to admit to that peter says he's also seen this sort of
4:31 pm
abuse on farms that have been checked by animal welfare inspectors. the property owners know they're coming in they'll come in. and everything looks hunky dory everything looks good on the dock and i get shot and i get sharon just where the property are and i wouldn't want to show them that i actually don't get free rides and so it's really a case of you know who checks the checker. if regular inspections don't help to promote animal welfare perhaps the answer lies in better cooperation between she found and clothing manufacturers we travel to a farm on the australian our land of tasmania. there are 11000 merinos here she graded david taylor stopped using news in 4 years ago. one of his best customers is here to observe the shearing process. stefan krauss is the
4:32 pm
product manager for a german outdoor wear company krauser is satisfied that tale of being raised humanely. but unfortunately a lot of farmers still use mules in without anesthetics it's horrible we simply couldn't imagine having our products associated with such a procedure that it's always been in the. catalogue of course tayla sheep still face the threat of maggot infestation untreated the maggots would borrow under the sheep skin which is also painful and deadly but tyler has come up with a process to prevent this he treats the labs with pesticides it's expensive and time consuming but it works taylor says that the chemicals have no side effects and cannot be detected in the lambs wool also he she is all of the sheep several times a year in the affected area these new concepts have not yet caught on with other farmers in fact they've criticized his innovative approach. think what think you're
4:33 pm
an idiot people are going doing this for turn around again and they've been used to doing something you know generations of doing something so it's not for someone to come in and this why it's a bit of a big pill to swallow. tayla she has his sheep just like other farmers do it takes 2 to 3 minutes for each one he says it's important to cause the animals as little stress as possible. now you know how the shape of your legs and. i could go to say felt all of the faith culpable right away happily. until the thing. this year is compressed says $150.00 shape day each animal deals an average of 6 kilos of whom. the material is then sorted by quality and pressed into by about half the wall is sent to clients in germany the rest is sold at auction.
4:34 pm
but meals in free farms like tieless are the exception in australia that's a problem for clothing manufacturers that want to make sure that the wool they use is produced humanely. get in how do things look right now the. company needs a lot more mules in free will so we're trying to convince other farmers to use the methods that david taylor does in itself they finish the legalities. some mules in free wool is sold at auction. we've come to the astray you know we'll exchange in sydney to find out more. the total of 320000000 kilograms of roll wool are produced every year in australia the yield is worth the equivalent of about $2300000000.00 euros. andrew blanch is managing director of a large group production company and says merino wool is a key product for his clients. to
4:35 pm
a very big part of the australian economy. continues to be in the last few years has been a fantastic return for the strata. but not all who is the same and only experts like andrew blanch can spot the differences it all comes down to the crimping or the frequency of the waste in the wool you can even tell whether the sheet that produced this material have a lot of skin wrinkles. the. that these come from might be a bit small and could have a little bit more wrinkle at the front of the animal and the shape that the ball the current comes from could be shaped that a little bit larger and much worse sight much plainer he says that the wall of mules in 3 sheep is not as fluffy and seems almost artificial. this one. feels more slippery it feels closer to synthetic i guess but
4:36 pm
it's it's how this one likes you feel just the way that it stands up and looks at you with your push against him to push back at you what so it's almost like is talking to you. the prices for marino will depend mostly on the daily demand on average the buying is paid the equivalent of 15 euros per kilo. for you will cost about one year i pick. for you. do you straight you know who grows association set a target of 2010 for ending the practice of musing but that hasn't happened yet we're here to talk to well to marry a man who was the associations chairman until last year we wanted to find out what he thinks of the increasing demand from using free will concerns about animal welfare. brain is that what i mean i can go. surely there's a huge part of the industry doesn't moment. you mean by the industry the
4:37 pm
bias from germany for example like they don't. have any specific in germany who want to because there isn't any going from say 100. to 2100 cents a kilo and that's what growers look at and until the time when that fixed a market. based why for them to look after her. sure if you go solution with iraq. but that procedure is still an exception among. merryman says that museum free will is available if clients are willing to. pay for it though get some more of that. but it is not. so patient. so the thing about money in the end isn't.
4:38 pm
sufficient. so. it's not yet clear what the associations policy on meals in would be under its new chairman. we wanted to interview some government officials about animal welfare problems in the industry but they declined our requests so we talked to a member of the new south wales parliament. we have an animal that can't adapt to the australian environment so it requires all these interventions by humans and some of those interventions are highly controversial some of them. very serious invasive treatments or procedures and they often done without pain relief and if we did talk cat or dog in australia you would be prosecuted and possibly put in jail. mark pearson proposed legislation to end the practice of me. when i 1st brought the motion in court to
4:39 pm
call on the house to commend the progressive growers and to move away from using and in the meantime provide absolute objection the next morning when the motion comes on for debate or consideration the government's object. 11 percent of australians is exported to europe. about 75 percent is sent to china for processing some of that ends up in europe. 2 as yon fabric all clothing. we've come to shanghai to visit a wall processing plant that's owned by a french company. stefan krauser is here to make sure that the musing free will that his company demand is not mixed together with inferior products. kilns used to we want to inspect this facility for ourselves and then there is this equipment is processing 20 tons of wool play day once

then. there was. the old it's been washed and dried it is them processed into finished gian the batch number stays the same throughout the system which includes several different production sites and often different companies in various countries. few businesses take the time and expense. to keep such a close watch on the production process. that's really good stuff that adds to the cost of our products we put a lot of effort into doing these kinds of checks because we hold ourselves to a higher standard that makes our products more expensive markers for the fields because i'm straight out. we've come to berlin for the fashion week shows that are held here twice a year. we are some of the exhibitors if they know where the well used in their
4:42 pm
products comes from. the council's teigen on ours is produced in australia. they pay a lot of attention to sustainability there and they make an effort to see that the sheep are treated humanely taught not bad habits are very pleased about that because our customers are concerned about animal welfare us e-mails or couldn't promise i'll come. back but i don't know anything about conditions of specific farms in new zealand or australia so. do your suppliers know whether the sheep have been subjected to meal singh for example wasn't a salad and you just as a family owned company we need to trust the people we work with is on the. many of the exhibitors rely on their manufacturers to tell them where the wool comes from. it can it's possible they might buy another batch of wool somewhere else but if they do they tell me like this comes from patagonia but the shooter consisted of

c.m.s. me can't afford to check on all of our distributors i am in canada and since fish fish caught we're constantly in contact with them to make sure that the well comes from sheep that are raised humanely decide which ones can take advantage of. germany's minister for economic co-operation and development good miller is committed to sustainable clothing production miller is opposed to musing but says more research is needed on this problem his ministry. he's developed a new seal of approval for companies that produce socially and ecologically sustainable textiles. was fertile willy's standards also apply to animal welfare and can and has. been good for as meat does he says the seal is associated with a large number of basic standards which of course also cover animal welfare as far as all is concerned. i would as was but this is

account he'll be on the right track and done is starts on group of eco but how can consume is make sure that they're buying sustainable products the a martyr for walk every purchase makes a statement and people need to pay more attention to the sources of the tech star products that they buy that way we can effect change and twin but how much influence to consume is really have how will they react when they find out more about how merino wool is produced the young women we met earlier was shocked when we showed them videos that we put together for this report to its miss this ocean full i didn't know that it was this bad if the companies are always put a positive spin on it and they tell you that well is a wonderful material my but when you see something like this you think twice before

agreed to seek a delay to the u.k.'s exit from the european union amid the crisis johnson has ordered parliament into recess the chamber will only reconvene about 2 weeks before the october 31st brags that deadline. poem for horses is snap election bid last week boris johnson gave it's another go in a sitting stretching into the early hours of tuesday. once again he was not prepared to compromise on his vision of a swift bright sits right. now this is big i will go to brussels our government will go to brussels on october the 17th and negotiate our departure on the 31st of october hopefully with a deal mr speaker but without one if necessary i will not ask for another delay oh freescale this drew a predictable response from the opposition which wants to avoid a no deal bracks sits un international they really go for it election but as keen
4:51 pm
as we are we are not prepared to risk inflicting that he's asking for you know do you want us our communities our jobs our services or indeed our rights. in the end prime minister johnson's election bid was easily defeated. and to use were quick to pounce. thank you mr speaker and i should perhaps congratulate the prime minister because at least he's been consistent is lost every vote he's brought to this. parliament has now gone into recess for 5 weeks after johnson perot's the house the opposition made their opinion clear about the 1st term. was thank you let's get the view from london now we're joined by. mass beer get we have parliament now
4:52 pm
suspended until mid october just over 2 weeks before the october 31st deadline so what is going to be happening backstage it's we now and then. well yes are really quite extraordinary now parliament is deserted for the next weeks and stock one trust of the scenes that we've seen inside parliament last night were m.p.'s and you have sharing it was shouting and this is really really extremely unusual normally during these ancient rituals when somebody comes over from the house of lords for one of the ceremonies parliamentarians a very polite but it just shows that anger that there is in parliament to what the government has been doing and that anger will now be transformed behind the scenes m.p.'s are now retreating they're going to meet again for their party conferences which are going to happen in a few weeks time but also they will be talking to each other and particularly the
4:53 pm
parties that are plotting to remain in the european union the m.p.'s that want to stay in the european union and that want to prevent leaving the european union without a deal they will be talking to each other the talk is about a general election it's probably unavoidable and our m.p.'s than our party is then going to help each other with so-called electoral paths so this is really the talk of the town at the moment and we also have better get this law there's this law preventing britain leaving the e.u. without a deal that was signed yesterday by the queen does that mean now that the u.k. must leave the e.u. with a deal. it means that at the end of october which is the next deadline the u.k. cannot leave without a deal this is what parliament here has decided and has enshrine into law we are not yet clear how the prime minister how the government is going to deal with that
4:54 pm
because we have seen in this extraordinary tug of war between government and call them and being at loggerheads with each other and the private mr says still saying that he does not want to ask for an extension and he said we're going to leave this do or die and he'd rather be dead in a ditch he's using this militaristic language in order to show the fighting spirit that he said what are his options that is an interesting question he can that would probably be the most sensible option go to the new. the mid end of october summit and try and negotiate a somewhat different deal a slight variation to trees amazed and then you can try and present it here to paul amend the thinking is that m.p.'s who have in the pause voted down the government still sarees a may still might now think again because we're seeing that britain is really in a way at the end of
4:55 pm
a road 6 and that might be one of the few options that the polman has in order to influence that process any further so we might see a revived deal but we really don't know for as johnson has not really made clear what his strategy is but he said he doesn't want to ask for an extension at mass in london thank you very. much. and in the midst of a day of high drama in the british parliament the speaker john bercow announcing that he would be stepping down within weeks his performances in the house of commons kept lawmakers in check or at least trying to and it became his trademark. ira he had to manage these people i used one word. 5 like a weapon i won't be rude for members of your journey he states sometimes he gave ministers a proper dressing down very interesting he very very. spare us the yanks was

5:01 pm
look to me still struggle to play well over 90 minutes but northern ireland a very difficult team to play against they bought a bad a very hot and they deny germany clear cut chances in the press have. men will neuer for example was tested on a number of occasions as you see right there and that pressing game was just on point but it was this man must sell a house who broke the deadlock after 48 minutes and then of course the search cannot be added a 2nd goal late in the match to seal the deal the 2 know when now sends germany to the top of group c. with 3 matches remaining. we we heard from somebody after the match right or and that was the hero of the matter must have a house in book and that's has a lot about team germany when it's your defender that helps you score an important point and secure those 3 points and of course i get it northern ireland it's very it's a very tough place to play they they have
5:02 pm
a great home record so let's hear what house in bourke have to say about that victory. you know. there was a little bit of pressure but we prepared very well it was a real culture and not hurt their fans created a really tough atmosphere northern ireland defended well gave us a few scares but with a bit of luck we want to. move on with a bit of luck so i mean germany are now surely in shape to qualify right so it's the top 2 teams in the group that will go through and i think germany will qualify based on their performances i don't think they're going to make it easy for themselves but as for the other question as well i don't think that their championship team i think they're still very far from winning a title and that's normal because this team is still in rebuilding mode i mean. the germany coach he's still tinkering with the lineups he doesn't even have a consistent starting 11 and championed champions are not made overnight and i
5:03 pm
think we have to be very realistic that this team is very young is very inexperienced and they they don't have a lot of big tournament experience and a lot of these young players still have not reached their peak and of course germany still get to hone their skills a bit more before the qualifiers continue they play a friendly against argentina in october and that's going to be a great rivalry and a lot of work to do a lemo talk a lot of. thank you. 3rd and coming up next our documentary about the woman who trains dogs to fight coaching in the forests of congo you are certainly going to want to hear more about that i'm sorry kelly in berlin thank you so much for watching have a great day. that . while male and i gave you the brand new delusions on the gold coast explosive device to open a still affects us all on

5:06 pm
that you'd actually filmed it but the director of the virunga national park explained to me what he wanted and i gradually got involved we brought our 1st dogs to congo in february 20th levon. all. lever on going ashmore park is a unesco world heritage site it's the oldest park in africa and at 8090 square kilometers is the size of the greek island of crete a different county to deserve a park allow enormous biodiversity and a wide range of habitats. a large number of endangered species live in the national park but it's mountain gorillas are the best known worldwide there are only around 1000 gorillas left and

5:10 pm
years and huge noses i thought they were really bizarre. to. me just. from the very 1st day as soon as the dogs arrived i started working with it but i got used to them after a while. there my then i changed my career from being a gamekeeper to a dog handler. because. there are actually $0.02 after the other motivation means trying the hand then they're off on a longer trial. so. the let's talk a little bit you. know who if. we there are 8 of us handlers and the dog unit.
5:11 pm
each of us has his own dog i'm dodi's had her i'm really happy and proud of her because she's such a good worker for. me and we start with the search game you put something on the ground for them we call to send titan typically a t. shirt or a jacket then the person runs away and the dog runs after them then all. apart go right that's right yes good dog. get him up from that some point the bloodhound realizes that it's fun that he'll get a snack or prize at the end and he also realizes that the item of clothing. front of him belongs to the person who's looking for you can build on this in training.
5:12 pm
yes yes well done david. i. jump yeah shako a retired psychometrist from ban heard about the anti poaching project from alena. didn't seem. to support her endeavors he decided to create a comic book all about the brave woman and her blood hounds. as anyone in. going to go in. by i'm jumpy or jackal i'm looking for a radio titan or a yes it's here. yeah great hi pleased to meet you.
5:13 pm
i. wish that ok you can start recording. the. hell. is only how do you know can you say radio tie in to that you know we. were a radio station specialized in nature conservation here in goma what is the reason for your visit jumpier. the reason for my visit is to talk about my comic book about conservation here in congo in particular about protecting the boardroom go national park. and so it's a comic book especially for children. like why did you create this book. is this you need i want to use this comic to show what natural to. pressures you have here in your country and that they are in danger like nature all over the world with.
5:14 pm
it's important to me that i can make a difference with this comic i want to shake people up and make children aware of it i thought to myself i have the time and maybe the opportunity to contribute something to the beautiful nature you have here. as even there is nothing like this here in congo there are lots of fact books but nothing for children there is no distributor in congo if there is no alternative but for me to carry all the books down here in my luggage or its cargo at the moment i am bringing them in my luggage shock as many as possible. then i bring the books into schools and talk to the teachers about the best way of handling the books how to use that. wasn't. me
5:15 pm
but i'm sorry i'm late. yes you're very late the head teacher has been expecting you since 9 o'clock you're 6 or 7 minutes late it's no big deal. i. i. i. look at this children. i. i i. i just the way what you see on the page. you akira. animals bravo. you know what kind of animals. don't shout out i can see you all i see.
5:16 pm
moves us is going to yes they are wild animals thank you. even those who is threatening the park. you have to know this if we're going to fight this threat. yet there are poachers. to buy these poachers good people. is good should the poachers be protected 40. 000000 because you are so you must know there are park rangers to protect us and there are specially trained sniffer dogs they can follow the scent of an animal which has been killed over 200 kilometers away words. like. almost on a. little.
5:17 pm
boy those are the folks in the village population sees the dogs with a mixture of great curiosity and fear in the beginning they shouted simba swahili for a line. while. the black out a bloodhound has been bred for following old difficult and long trials for over a 1000 years the animal has been selected to do this work called man trailing the men train full. of old dogs the bloodhound has one of the best develops. senses of smell it is capable of sniffing the scent of a certain person and following it weeks later over distances of many kilometers.
5:18 pm
a bloodhound can even smell the scent of the person who fired a bullet from this cartridge casing dropped carelessly to the ground after being heated top 1000 degrees when fired. during their training the don't become accustomed to increasingly difficult situations noise different types of ground and trails of differing ages the animal is capable of working successfully in villages where there are countless smells. but. come here show us.
5:19 pm
to clearly identify the person so what the dog gets up on its back legs is then rewarded. we all hope your 1st time i came here the rangers didn't even know how to take a dog for a walk i was able to choose some good people but they had no training and no experience of were. with dogs or how to look after them i had to start from scratch i also had to learn how to get my message across to train them. always being good.
5:20 pm
look try to do it as if you were a dog. the training takes about 2 years during which the dark and the handler build up a relationship of trust they can only work successfully as a team. and go right or left left to be this way right would be here exactly. what we have here did a good job there. for you and after she snipped it safe search. very good can someone take that hat. oh yeah. bloodhounds don't simply accept orders they are never totally obedient humans have to learn the dog's language and how to interpret the dog's behavior correctly or lead her then leave her lead her leave her and now give her time. in difficult
5:21 pm
situations the handler has to be able to recognize whether the dog is following the trail of the right person. blore pool lot hounds can get along with the climate almost anywhere the problem here of course is the whole infrastructure there's hardly anything in congo there are no shops no department stores not a nice congo so i have to import everything we have here in the congo hound unit for the rangers and the dogs in suitcases from switzerland. or i don't have the chance to transport them with a container or anything but clear for all to hong kong i normally travel to congo with 4 to 6 suitcases or 23 kilos and travel back with just 1 may be at about 12 kilos. we did sell coffee if the.
5:22 pm
same with cora. yes it's the same problem so we'll keep on with the bedpan tain it's hope or the lack. of 12 unwise for the from the beginning one of the biggest problems was veterinary care we have to do most of it ourselves. so i've trained my ranges like veterinary assistance they can do general examinations they can give injections or infusions and. they can also perform blood tests especially for blood parasites. we have a microscope here and they're very good at using it probably better than me because they do it more often bob watching you based off he is consistent form think. ok at least he is 4.5 kilos. oh no
5:23 pm
that's because of your hand. ok. so i made some vision at the moment for example our dogs are pretty thin thinner than they should be. if you had that we feed them natural food that means beef and rice or potatoes or vegetables oil and a mixture of vitamins and minerals think. it's good if a dog doesn't have to work and when he's not growing. but unfortunately we've noticed that our 1st poppy bonus has developed growth deficiencies. like for that we tried to find some ready mix food but doesn't exist in congo so now we're importing food from kenya so the dogs are not hungry they get big portions 2 to 3 times a day but for growing dogs or working dogs it's not enough. i
5:24 pm
. think. i've. ready seen her on the national park is in the middle of a region which has been affected by armed conflict for 30 years 600 armed rangers including the dog handlers risk their lives on a daily basis to guarantee the protection of the park they are recruited from the surrounding villages and undertake strict military training.
5:25 pm
and i swore an oath to save wild animals and to protect nature. for that's my job and i'm willing to die for it to sacrifice my life to the protection of these animals they're more real than depend their lives full of protect from this isn't printer for protecting nature is the 1st priority family comes 2nd. do you. think it. would. be cool i.
5:26 pm
think i escaped death once but my friend was killed in 2003. i. know you ready yes it was. everything we protect is of great value for the population. for example. sometimes people take firewood for cooking from the park. or they want to make coal and sell it or will. that is absolutely forbidden as much as poaching. the poachers are often armed and if you try to stop them it gets dangerous and liberal because if they see you 1st they will kill you is that when the premier.
5:27 pm
5:28 pm
the next 2 but i think your teacher are giving me the chance to come and present my book to you. we said you are the future of this country and i thought i would make a comic for you with a story to show you the value of your country's busy. god i know what it's a little one but here is the story. this is the hero here in the middle. and his name is louis separately and down here do you know what that is was obvious casus are. right christiane my lens dog. to stop so many animals from being poached so directors are good at that if you know when john pierre was here the 1st time he came to see us and asked me a lot of questions and now when you look at the book i'm even in it was christiane and the rangers of the dog unit are in it too and of course the other rangers fixer
5:29 pm
. in this but they've got. their stock ok i just have one question have any of you ever been confronted with poaching. wonder who. is seen how can you stick a gun what if the poacher is someone in your family what do you do then. people know about the criminal goings on in the park but they turn a blind eye to it often it's family members who are in some way involved in the poaching sometimes out of necessity to scrape together a living. then there is commercial perching which is a different story in a spectacular campaign christian help to rescue a kidnapped baby gorilla poachers want to sell it on the black market where sums of up to $40000.00 run off or the animal has since been living in the only mountain
5:30 pm
5:31 pm
ok we have to go. build a coaching is most common place in the savannah areas in the center where there are elephants in big mammals from there we want to be on location. if something happens to me and i've been asked now i'll update stephen you get so involved stop being. allowed to do more of take care if you.
5:32 pm
are. intent on football in the middle of the park there are more diseases there is c.c. flies which can carry sleeping sickness and that's why i want to kennel area with all round protection with mosquito nets so that the dogs can also be outside at dusk without being in danger your little 6 at the bad. yes that's much better. to me it's one of my obligations to pursue this project to. sleep. because i was
5:33 pm
lucky enough to go to libya in my 1st year i said back then i'd like to take the dogs to the savannah and from the beginning i was blown away for me it's like paradise it's a place i love to return to it has an amazing 5 and the animals are so quiet and trusting because they've been protected by ranges for years so for out at night you hear hyenas lions leopards for me it's my absolute dream place. for musicians in ops a lot pal boy. can he come that's good keep calm. until way we have got to be to me also been active for about

a year when the war broke out again in congo it was the m $23.00 a tutsi group from rwanda which rebelled against the army and the front ran right in front of our headquarters very dramatic and of course very loud it was a war after all a lot of the villagers were injured i helped to treat them. although i'm a vet medicine is such a big part of me that everything else is secondary when my help is needed utils hold me i wasn't afraid i just did my job it was all money one of many or most. from an important hole we have a park under great threat it's the place the war the rebels but it's also a place with many natural resources which is what causes all the problems if you ask me it's very important to me that we try to save something that if southeast texas with us will set up a state. economy i can't save the whole planet at

i grew up with dogs the 1st dog i can remember was a boxer after that we had to attack songs. then i watched this lassie serious and in one of the episodes there was a bloodhound called samantha. this samantha had a real character knew exactly what she wanted it was independent but also stab and . so that really impressed me and i wouldn't stop pestering my mother until we had our 1st blood hound a bitch called godall. madam in my marlin invited me to switzerland to do more training as a dog handler. it's nothing like congo nobody can arrest you and the police

don't bother people. no. it was. hello welcome to our seminar here in test scene. for 4 if you are 5 years ago i took on the training of all the ranges in congo and soon had the idea that it would be good for them to experience how other handlers work with their dogs but in congo they're the only ones there's no comparison that's why i started inviting ranges here in the autumn we go to training seminars but we also give presentations for what are called was. what it. was. like that was in. which we welcome to our presentation on the congo project the congo how project as

we call it name and. dawned on me. of some of them and. i get down to just one thought was how will they handle it when they come here from congo one of the poorest countries in the world on it. they see how we live here and how well we live but they also notice that we pay 5 francs 50 for a coffee they can live on that for a week. or. 200 but they really like their own country they have their families and friends there and you can learn to move between these 2 cultures so it's really very positive to see if. what. i wrote. great. poaching between people.

yes commander. it's a real emergency. commission that will get the dogs in the car let's go the rangers have to be prepared to be called in and all times they need to be physically fit but mental strength can also be crucial for their survival do it better than. in the year 2018 alone 12 rangers were killed in the fight against poachers a total of $175.00 young men and women have died protecting the park in the last 10 years. to learn to cope with this pressure they regularly train on the real

are we are not prepared to risk inflicting that he's asked that ok i'm sure you want us all coming to take our jobs our services or indeed our rights. in the end prime minister johnson's election bid was easily defeated. and pigs were quick to pounce. thank you mr speaker and i should have concurred surely the prime minister. because at least he's been consistent he's lost every book he's brought to this. column and has now gone into recess for 5 weeks after johnson probed the house the opposition made their opinion clear about but. i think i was. standing by for us in the london hyperaggressive the house of commons has now been
5:52 pm
suspended until mid october that is just over 2 weeks before that october 31st brags that deadline so what will happen backstage during this time well yes i mean it's really unusually quite normally for the last weeks months even there were protesters here there were people shouting and there were parliamentarians inside the house of commons but there is johnson has decided to send them home so that he could pursue his own braggs it strategy however i'm p.s. are not quite we know that behind the scenes there is talk there are talks going on for example between those parties who want to remain in the european union and who want to prevent leaving without any deal there they're meeting their discussing they're discussing for example electoral strategies because the talk of the town is of a general election this is what most m.p.'s are expecting is going to happen within
5:53 pm
the next weeks and months and so the parties are preparing for it and they're discussing strategies and whether they're possibly helping each other because it's really about leaving all remaining within the e.u. and this is the dividing these are the dividing lines not the party lines but breaks it yes and no this is what divides british politics. just yesterday before lawmakers went into the suspension the queen actually signed a deal prevent a law preventing britain leaving the u. without a deal so does that mean now that the u.k. must leave the e.u. with a deal. the u.k. it cannot leave the u. without a deal at the fatty fast of october this is what parliamentarians have enshrined into law basically it's been a tug of war between the government between boris johnson who's been saying we are going to leave at the end of october do or die and a parliament who wants to make sure that this for for in their point of view the
5:54 pm
majority of m.p.'s point of view this catastrophe will not happen they are scared of the economic consequences this can have for jobs medicine shortages food shortages so a majority of m.p.'s wants to make sure that this is not going to happen now boris johnson has repeatedly said that he's not going to ask the e.u. for an extension what are his options the most sensible option would be to go to brussels and try to negotiate another dhea it's not going to be easy because brussels as not going to give him really what he wants to boris johnson has to come up with the strategy maybe have a slight tweak on the deal that series a may has got and then try and present it again to parliament and to get it through this time we know that there are m.p.'s who had voted the deal down trees amazed at how they might be just more amenable to voting in voicing it for a dishtowel we know that also m.p.'s are actually as we speak still sitting and
5:55 pm
they are thinking about how they can get a deal over the line so this is the most. the most sensible option maybe for boris johnson but we don't know whether this is the route he's really going to going to go down or reporting for us there in london thank you very much. well in the midst of a day of high drama in the british parliament the speaker john bercow announced that he will step down within weeks because performances in the house of commons keeping lawmakers in check have become his trademark i have to manage these people i know he used one word. like a weapon i won't try to be rude from members of our own journey states sometimes he gave ministers a proper dressing down very interesting he's very very bright and sparrows 203 ok you know so was mary was i want to
5:56 pm
hold up oh yes the house it all looks like good fun but announcing his departure explained how seriously he took the job he was leaving his friends. throughout my time i. was speaker. i have sought to increase the relative all so to see all of this so the legislature. for which i will make out soon moved the no no color g n e y m m anywhere out at any time. down missed him was for. 6 wood. and no doubt he'll missed them. let's get a round of now some other stories making news around the world prosecutors across

a few of my team that's right that the president elect of the european commission of the one aligned there on veiling her proposed cabinet and let's bring it off on a from brussels who's been following the story for us hi max a punch line had promised in advance that half her team would be women and she has succeeded in doing that but there are are there any surprises on this list of commissioners. yes she almost succeeded 13 women 14 men but given the fact that the top position is a woman was left on the line herself you could say yes this is as good as it's ever been in the european commission when it comes to gender balance so right now as we just heard she is explaining to us what the plan is and before we went on to live that was actually the interesting part when she said that there would be 2 main topics for the 2 executive vice presidents we just saw in that little movie or that
6:01 pm
little report you show one is funds to months the dutch commissioner who was also in the runnings to be the new commission president he will head a project that was very important it was enough on the line which is called the european green deal and she reiterated that europe is supposed to be or will become the 1st climate neutral continent if everything goes according to plan and the 2nd is that executive vice president in this case is margaret the best day or the commissioner from denmark already a commissioner for competition in the younger commission and she will become the one to coordinate the project europe fit for the digital age so you can see those are the 2 extremely important focuses that the new from the commission will set one is for a green deal so climate neutral continent and the other one is europe fit for the digital age a lot of work sounds like a lot of our next what about now and seeing the different political directions that

we saw emerge after the elections in may for example looking at the interest of eastern european a member states and centrally if you member states. yes and that was probably the main point of criticism said that it was enough on the line only made it into this position with the votes in the european parliament of right wing populists for example from poland and hungary we know that she had the blessing of those right wing populist governments there and some are expecting her to give a little something back now to those to those we can't say quite yet because she's not done with her presentation what are the commissioners of poland and hungary are going to get which portfolio but in her presentation so far we've already learned that the most powerful positions so the 2 executive vice presidents are from western europe so from from denmark and also from the netherlands there will be 2 additional vice presidents but not executive vice presidents you can see it's very complicated that will be from the east and from the south so
6:03 pm
a little something there as well but. you know we really will have to look into the details where she has given something to those right wing populist countries to the east of poland and hungary we do know that poland wanted the agricultural portfolio because agriculture is very important in poland have to wait and see if this is really the case. max hoffman reporting for us there as those of us on the line unveils for a proposed cabinet thank you very much. more than 100 victims of hurricane doreen in the bahamas are asking what went wrong after they were kicked off a ferry to the u.s. the people thought they were being allowed to leave their devastated islands for florida before being told to leave the vessel because they didn't have us besides video of the incident has since gone viral of the ferry operator has apologized saying there was a misunderstanding with u.s. authorities. already. for her from her

about whether the bahamas will be allowed into the united states we have to be very careful everybody needs totally proper documentation i don't want to allow people the word supposed to be in the bahamas to come in to the united states including some very bad people it's a very bad gang members had some very very bad drug dealers. on monday evening the ferry company issued a statement saying that passengers required in person author is. nation from the immigration authorities in the bahamas in capital nassau meanwhile schools are being transformed into shelters for the thousands needing food water and temporary housing after dorrian hit their homes last week. the country's ravaged northern region have to be cleared of debris so people can eventually return but with the current confusion about the right of behind me and to seek shelter in the u.s. the situation is becoming more difficult every day. hong kong democracy

to realize that coffee was well destructive on the sea. and joshua wang will be joining us on the w. news right here in our studio at the top of the next hour. now a new report says the world must invest now to protect against the effects of climate change or pay a heavier price later the global commission on adaptation says targeted investment of $1.00 trillion dollars could generate more than 3 times as much in benefits against the climate crisis but can that money come fast enough areas that were once pristine are already being plundered $1.00 of europe's last primeval forests in romania's carpathian mountains is a case in point. driving through transylvania sparseness and sense of romania would switch off in several 100 years old conservationists gabrial pound is on the trail of illegal loggers they're moving ever deeper into the mountain forests where
6:08 pm
the animals and plants are especially in need of protection after only a few metres will the 1st evidence. freshly fell trees chopped down without any regard for nature. but. we are shocked to see that they came all the way up to cut these forests it's a place where it's illegal to cut because it's next to dark by an area and these forests should be always protected everything go wrong me hard for the forest is gone they make because they reduce the consistency of to a forest and they took out the best wood for day in the street a straight ones which are the best for the industry. pound has been monitoring the destruction in these mountains for years the woods effect is are often under special protection so logging is only allowed under strict rules but the state and forestry commission room silver is often criticized for doing little to enforce those rules. romania's minister for the forestry and water has defended from silver
6:09 pm
saying any 40 percent of the country's forests are state owned and they're all the rules are complied with he says there's now a countrywide system in place which helps trace the tree back to the point of consignment. we aren't saying that everything is working perfectly otherwise we wouldn't need any controls were constantly improving not just the tree tracing but also the logging and the use of materials made from wood . but conservationists are convinced they say remain his forestry laws are too lax and even clash with e.u. rules to put more pressure on rumania activists are preparing to lodge a complaint with the european commission not to lead the timber industry has a very negative influence on what's happening but ultimately we are primarily focusing on the remain near north or a t's they are the ones who must create the legal framework have been sure that the rules implemented looking at these images it's hard to imagine that laws alone can
6:10 pm
help protect these forests timber loading points some illegal right in the middle of the forest lorries carrying wood and small saw mills and one of the east poorest countries timber is big business and the demand for words from richie you states continues to grow. to soccer and european championship qualifiers now germany's men's team won an important away clash in northern ireland last night only met ocular of his forces here with us liam i imagine germany fans are probably pretty relieved yes they are hoping they can finally take a deep breath and they needed these 3 points they needed this result especially after losing to the netherlands on friday because if they had also lost in northern ireland last night european qualification could have been on the line that something to remember is that they still have difficulty playing really well over the 90 minutes we saw that again again yesterday i mean germany struggled to create
6:11 pm
chances in the 1st half with northern ireland threatening a number of times manuel neuer coming up big for them but finally in the 2nd half an eye catching wallie from defender yes defend last fellow house who broke the deadlock at 48 minutes and then search cannot be added a 2nd goal late in the match and the 2 no victory when sense germany to the top of group c. with 3 matches remaining so exactly it's the result that they needed last not necessarily the performance what are the players think of the. performance. and i think the players know that they can and they have to do better i mean that was evident against the netherlands that was also evident against northern ireland and it says a lot about the team if it's your defender your defender that's course dooku crucial goal in the game and not your attack and i think captain manono yes had it best that we had to be patient but this was at the end not an easy victory and we have the sound bite so why don't we take a listen to that. there's one speaking this year was
6:12 pm
a very important game for us you could tell that we were under quite a bit of pressure because i think after the 1st half when northern ireland expended a lot of effort we knew that they would tire and give us chances was sort of. that was how it panned out in the 2nd period and that's why even if we score the 2nd goal a little too late. but we patiently waited for our opportunities. solem it does this all mean that the germans are in a good spot to qualify and at the moment yes i mean and they are also lucky because it's the top 2 teams in the group that will go through it so when it comes to qualification yes they will qualify but i still think this team is a very far away from being a championship side and you know they still in rebuilding mode doesn't even have a consistent starting line up a starting 11 he's still tinkering experimenting a lot of positions are still up for grabs but we also have to be very honest with
6:13 pm
ourselves and very realistic that this side is very young and very inexperienced there are a lot of new players on the side and a lot of them have very little big tournament experience so and many of them still haven't peak so there's still a lot to come so i say patients patients patients and of course they also get to hone their skills in october against argentina in a friendly all right high expectations or from the german team omaha talking from t.v. sports thank you lima. and let's get more scores from the european championship qualifiers last night in germany's group c. the netherlands blew past a stone year in group i have belgium likewise had no trouble with scotland leaders poland played a scoreless draw with austria hungary lost at home to slovakia in group easy and i gave up 1st place across the world cup runners up could only manage a $11.00 draw in azerbaijan this is d.w. news these are our top stories british lawmakers have rejected the prime minister

boris johnson's call for a snap general election it was their last vote before parliament begins a 5 week suspension and a frantic final day johnson pledged not to delay brags that despite the moon legislation that requires him to request an extension should he fail to negotiate a new deal britain is due to leave the european union on oct 31st. incoming e.u. commission president was the last underline has been unveiling her new team in brussels a proposed new commission consists of 14 men and 13 women it will require the approval of the european parliament before it can take office on november 1st. more than 100 victims of hurricane dorian in the bahamas have been kicked off a ferry to the us the bahamas nationals thought they were being allowed to leave their devastated islands for florida before being told to leave the vessel because they didn't have u.s. visas video of the incident has since gone viral. this is deja vu news from berlin

6:19 pm
. also on the show germany wants to have its cake and eat it too floating a plan to interest spending all while keeping its debts down. to you and google in the crosshairs prosecutors across the u.s. are opening investigations into the search giant will tell you want to. zoom business report i'm seeing there's a lead good to have you with us. volkswagen has long towered itself is the one car company that can mainstream electric vehicle using a massive production scale to lower costs and improve battery life and bring the price tag down alternately now v.w. has unveiled its 1st all at your compact id 300 the opening of the frankfurt motor show the question now will the average person by its. for europe's biggest automaker the id 3 isn't just a car it represents an idea of what flex 5 and wants to be in the eyes of environmental regulators and increasingly climate conscious consumers. now this is
6:20 pm
the car that fox is hoping to make an icon the way for example the beetle was its big bet and electro mobility amid what's become a battle for relevance. running up to 500 kilometers on a single charge a tent for every day mainstream use but as many electric vehicle makers know just because it was built doesn't mean it will sell on is counting on the prices and high volumes to make a profit until 202815 1000000 cars and the most ardent rules will be built on this platform with this platform we are generating scales and this case we can use to give our custom us a price below $37.00 jurors and of course we such a huge amount of volume you can't afford to make the process now concerns are growing about whether election ability is indeed the way forward towards a carbon neutral transport people are worried about what happens to the batteries at the end of its life people are worried about mineral extraction what do you say
6:21 pm
about those concerns we think that election will be at the at the moment the right technology because we are committed to perris 2050 we wants to be on to 2050 climate new true and today electrification is the best choice to realize at short notice c o 2. doctrines until 2025 we want to produce more than $1000000.00 electric cars with this we can reduce the c o 2 emissions fall off feet by 30 percent the id 3 represents one of the 1st tangible results of that effort but whether it's paid off is something consumers get to decide following its market release next summer. and our correspondent how christian brits now joins us from the motor show paul good to see you so volkswagen says that it's going all in on electric vehicles right now but yet it's still not completely sure there is
6:22 pm
a consumer base for this so what's pushing this transition that if it's not buyers . yeah folks are going to and the other car makers they're not teaching taking this plunge into this big risk really on their own their own choice they're sort of forced by. politicians use really trying to crack down on climate. climate changing emissions c o 2 emissions from these car makers reducing or increasing the regulations so by 2021 there'll be a much lower limit to the fleet of a car maker so far you know some with less emissions have cancelled out those with worse but one of those was actually diesel and diesel is now pretty much gone as a as a factor on top of that we've got a surge in s.u.v.s sales that's all actually bringing up the c o 2 levels currently and that's really putting carmakers on under pressure the time is running out for them if they don't want to be faced with penalties from that use and these
6:23 pm
penalties are very very happy that would be a very big price tag for the carmakers. to actually says that it needs help creating this market for electric vehicles and help from the government including in areas such as tax incentives or more charging infrastructure don't they have a point here should the government help out. it's sort of chicken and egg problem what do you get 1st the electric cars or the charging infrastructure the fact of the matter is that charging infrastructure is a problem in germany. in my own case i live in an apartment building in a big city nearby there isn't any charging station i would have to go a couple of blocks away and there's 2 charging stations available so imagine 10 people having a car it's just not going to work out that needs to be more but there's also a bit of finger pointing carmakers aren't really investing in that kind of infrastructure like for example tesla does with his own charging stations so there is some responsibility that they are trying to shove away it is true that this new
6:24 pm
technology is coming in more. and more expensive means that people are less likely to buy it if tax incentives might help to get the ball rolling here for carmakers so there is a little bit of point there and course not a whole lot of sympathy for car makers right now probably in germany give the diesel scandal recent years when i ask you briefly what happens if no one buys these electric vehicles. is putting out. they kind of have to on the from the car makers perspective this has to work they're putting a lot of money into is this going alone is putting 80000000000 euros into electric mobility we talked to the c.e.o. last night and he said well if it doesn't work out you know we've still got other options we've got hybrid cars we've also got the combustion engine still running but that is not going to me regulation and that's going to affect the bottom line potentially even cutting some of these vehicles that are emitting too much and that
6:25 pm
might mean cutting jobs as well. right paul christian brits on the floor of the frankfurt motor show thank you very much. the german government is reported to be considering a shadow budget to get around spending rules reuters reports that officials in berlin are looking at setting up independent agencies to take on new debt for investment in the german economy and that would enable the government to over reach the deficit limits and shrines in the constitution germany is facing a backlog of demand for infrastructure spending at a time when the economy is showing signs of injury recession. good contribution in frankfurt for moralists conrad given germany's constitutional limits on debt how is such a move like this not unconstitutional. it's very likely stephen that that something like this would trigger a heated constitutional debate but it's obvious that something is in the making today shows the german finance minister presented the new budget for the year 2020
6:26 pm
in the german parliament the bundestag and then he said to reach germany's ambitious climate change targets it's not enough to plan the way germany has done for many years private investment he said was necessary and if you talk to many of those private investors who have their base here in frankfurt they say without the backing of the government no really large climate change related investments large infrastructure investments can be expected so why not use some of germany's extraordinary credit standing to do more so it sounds like a domestic debate is in the making there outside of germany markets have actually been waiting for news of german stimulus how are they reacting to this news well i can tell you that today germany's 30 year bond yield for the 1st time in 6 weeks
6:27 pm
has climbed in positive territory so obviously a few international investors believe in higher government debt in germany in the future especially i can tell you generally speaking every little word from germany that germany wants to do more is very very positive news for the markets they've been eagerly anticipating this especially as you know the other big player in the game monetary policy makers might have come to an end with their remedies we have the meeting of the european central banks council later this week maybe what mario draghi will say there will not be enough to really inspire the real economy wait and see contribution for us in frankfurt thank you. 20 years ago he was an english teacher today he's one of the world's richest men and arguably china's most famous entrepreneur alibaba co-founder jack ma now he's stepping down from his role

discovers that his mother is actually hiding a jewish girl in their house at the time and so he has to make this issue of whether to turn the girl in and be loyal to his doxie beliefs or or do the right thing a very interesting movie it could have really gone horribly wrong i have to say the premise is so problematic but the director here the new zealand director talking to what. he he also plays hitler actually in the clip that we just saw he gets the balance just right he's an interesting guy both of our e. and jewish heritage and he gets the balance between the the humor and the whore exactly right this film remind me a lot of a life is beautiful another story that found comedy in the horrors of the 2nd world war and i think it's really an amazing. feat that what he is a man has managed here and could be maybe the final for the 1st film to actually
6:37 pm
get even germans to laugh at him ok now another black hole but the old son had its premiere in toronto i believe this is a whodunit with a difference. yeah this is an interest what interesting film of it's from ryan johnson whose last movie was the last jet out of the last star wars movie so i wasn't really knowing what to expect from him when he did just a whodunit the film is set up like sort of one of those classic agatha christie adaptations you know star studded whodunit here you've got daniel craig jamie lee curtis michael shannon all these these these amazing actors packed into this room in one of the beds of dead and then a guy with a foreign name and a weird accent comes as a tactic to try and solve this case played by daniel craig but usually whodunits for me don't work because they've been done to death you know we've seen hundreds of versions on film and on t.v. but what ron johnson does with this is he sort of plays with the genre he has a lot of fun with it and he almost makes it almost
6:38 pm
a satire but in the end it still works as a proper style whodunit watching this film had the feeling like this of the kind of movie that if agatha christie got stoned and wrote a new mystery this is what might come as a lot of fun and if you're a fan of the old school i think christie's you have a lot of fun with this. i'm going to go to target just tell me there's also a lot of talk about one particular bio page a beautiful day in the neighborhood starring tom hanks what did you make about what . yeah this is quite interesting a female director here there's a lot of female directors in this year this is a biopic but with a difference it's put stars the nicest man in hollywood tom hanks playing the nicest man in t.v. fred rogers or mr rogers the late children's t.v. presenter and what's interesting about this it's not really the story of fred rogers but it's the story of the life of someone in the influence namely a cynical journalist who tried to find the dark secrets about fred rogers but
6:39 pm
spoiler only found was more wonderfulness this film is like a big warm hug and maybe just the right thing for these sort of talks at times skull always a mine of information great to talk. scott in toronto thank you. now in our continuing series 100 german must read featuring great books from german authors that being translated into english we're looking at a book that sheds some light on how family life was in the former communist east germany in times of fading light all you can rudolph is a view of life on the wrong side of the. another family gathering from hell the mom can smash the sun doesn't even show up in the 90 year old birthday boy the grandpa probably knows of that happening.
6:40 pm
to. everyone and or going to all his novel in times of fading light knows the old man's and dementia but it's probably for the best otherwise he'd realize the country he's helped build is about to end just like his life it's october 1909 a few weeks before the east german regime collapses. but you can no longer was 57 when he made his debut with this novel tells the history of east germany through the eyes of a family his own family. you know if there's alter ego alexandre hates growing up in a country his grandfather believes. he would never hear the rolling stones live would never see woodstock never even see west berlin with its new demos and student riots it's free love because between the small narrow world where he would have to spend his life and the other big wide world where real true life was lived there

was a border and it was the one that he likes on their own it's our turn to have to guard . in times of fading light is about the failure of a whole country written without accusations or justifications read it if you want to understand what made people build communist east germany and why their dream was doomed to fail. the western german city of ball was big beethoven. where he spent a formative years of his life as a beethoven fast and in a featuring many of his works of course but beethoven and self was a great innovator so i'm sure he would have approved of the 5 festival features contemporary music and not to die as well it got underway at the weekend with classic. music
6:42 pm
in the air to be told from fast and done kicked off with one of its annual favorites a live screening of the opening concert of the markets where i'm on. the features beatles and symphony number 6 also known as the pastoral symphony conducted by you cupcake has sat us to and the family as you make. sitting out sign to experiencing this with other people is mike i really like the conductor it's exciting to watch him not punish the you don't like it when you listen to this it's a force of nature fantastic. one last we heard saw at dawn's world congress center playing the pastoral symphony and beethoven's hometown is a special experience for the $94.00 musicians and the conductor. well it's a unique symphony of course and all symphonies on and kind of bet on how this kind
6:43 pm
of. i did about what nature means to people actually i think that's the kind of the most important point of view. every year the festival picks a motto in connection to beethoven's life and work this year it's moonlight a romantic theme that's based on the composer's moonlight sonata and fits in well with the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. and for the men life is simply in chanting makes us want to dream. this is the man on the moon when you move everything seems possible and this feelings of love and longing seems to hold this is connected to the theme of moonlight the moon changes the contours of the real world. over the next few weeks the beethoven fest will stage around 50 performances among this year's highlights as a joint concert offer german vocal ensemble and a south african
6:44 pm
a capella group and there's more with bill a experimental works and works for me as also taking the stage. and i want to present something special at the beethoven fest if it's not just about the old masters like i to have on my sleeve if this wild why do while we go so we don't just own of the old masters we want to show what contemporary musicians do with that extraordinary heritage and. this is why the opening concert is not just about beethoven pieces from the 20th century i included like beloved bach talks the miraculous mandarin. talk beethoven was a main source of inspiration. of course there's a kind of obvious reasons to to play better from here but i think it's a very good idea to try to juxtapose the battlefronts. heritage.
6:45 pm
how it kind of reflects and music after betto from. this was the opening concert of this year's be it will contest next year it's the 250th anniversary of the composer's birthday bundles celebrate the special occasion with not one but 2 festivals. and the 1st one gets underway next march when taro francis will conduct all of beethoven's 9th symphony much more on the website as d.w. is media part of the festival so for this edition of arts and culture our. kick off. seems to come down to the same suit by a minute and a joint lunch. line is trying to come 7 times in a row plan last time

tasks await this a new government. well we assume that the most important topics are those that so-called executive vice presidents will be tasked with with going forward with one of them is of course funds to months and he will be in charge of the green deal for europe funds to moments was also a vice president in the current commission of silk road younger and is the commissioner from the netherlands the 2nd one you also mention my good to vest who is the danish commissioner she will also be an executive vice president and she will be in charge of the digital future for the european union of course an area where the e.u. has much ground to cover compared to for example what is happening in china and in the united states of america and there is also a 3rd executive vice president from the eastern states from latvia to be to be precise here this is valid is. also current member of the e.u.

commission former prime minister of that country and he will be in charge of growth and jobs and the social aspects of jobs so you can see the 3 priorities here basically to translate it it's climate change on the one hand trying to keep up with the with the old developments and having well you know european style job creation meaning with the social aspect to it max taking a closer look at that the makeup of this cabinet was enough underlined had promised that half the team would be women and it seems she succeeded in that area but were there any surprises there. she almost succeeded 13 women 14 men but given that the top job is also a woman was enough on the line herself you could say this is a success she kept her promise i think this does qualify now it surprises not so much in the names because we knew the names before that but there is a little trouble brewing because some say and that was probably the main point of
6:53 pm
criticism that was enough on the line only got the job because she was helped by votes from right wing populist parties or example from poland or from hungary now the polish commissioner will get the portfolio for agriculture which is extremely important to poland you could say it makes sense but on the other hand this might also be a gesture or a small thank you some will see it that way and then you have the you will from the czech republic so she is part of a populist party and she will be in charge of holding up european values that's also something that will probably give a headache to some and then and that's something though none of us would have expected at least at the beginning of august italy's commissioner is pollo genteel noni former prime minister but not a populist and at the beginning of august and some of you will remember that we had a fully populist government in italy and that heralded a lot of trouble for the formation of this commission but as we all know that

government broke down and so now we have a very moderate commissioner with jenji loney who is very well regarded here in brussels and he will be in charge for economy start a lot of names are a lot to look forward to next up on for us in brussels thank you. to britain now and our parliament has again voted against holding a snap general election prime minister boris johnson had requested one for october 15th but the opposition labor party refused to back the proposal on last johnson agreed to seek a delay to the u.k.'s exit from the european union amid the crisis johnson has ordered lawmakers to go into recess the house of commons will only reconvene about 2 weeks before the october 31st breaks that deadline. after calling support of his not be election bid last week horace johnson david another go in a sitting stretching into the early hours of tuesday. once again he was not

time today we've also heard from hong kong's leader kerry lamb again asking protesters to end the violence there i want to play you a clip of what she said let's take a look at that. him of you violence should be stopped for the benefit of hong kong but going forward to mend the rift in society and to bring back peace than we are very willing to engage people directly in a dialogue. that is a very clear message there from carrie lemon or if you violence should be stopped for the benefit of hong kong why isn't it being stopped where we experience produce brutality in the past 3 months the only thing aware by hong kong people is no police we have peace and now is the time for hong kong government to conduct investigation commission and to investigate on produce brutality you keep talking about police brutality but i want to show you some pictures of some of the protests that we saw over the weekend we have some pictures of some of the scenes of
7:02 pm
protests here and these are scenes we have to say of violence of protesters are destroying property we will see soon some pictures also of barricades and boxes being set on fire these don't look like peaceful protests joshua barricade is used to protest protest her instead of allowing police stormed into the crowd during the peaceful protests at the same high i strongly aware that force has been used by protester but we strongly aware that the only way out is for hong kong government not to stay behind of riot police and do nothing to allow clash and fall and happen is that of blaming on activists now we are asking where is president xi and carolan but don't you think the protests might have gone too far joshua i think the protests must continue with our course on free election of course no one would enjoy to see clash and fall as happen but with our cause on free election the i would too late and fundamental go off hong kong people is just asking for the right
7:03 pm
to elect our own government we hope to have the right to what you hope to have the right to vote you are asking for democratic concessions but the whole reason these protests started and the reason we're seeing that violence that i've been asking you about on the streets is because there was a bill introduced by the hong kong leadership to extradite to mainland china that bill has now been removed i mean isn't that a sign from the hong kong leadership that they're willing to talk and we just heard kerry say we are willing to engage people directly in a dialogue why is the. i don't think continuing pro-democratic can lawmakers sense an open letter to caroline on 1st of july urged to have dial from 1st of july till now carol am there for a reply that threat she's not replied it's not even to take she didn't reply to her so we are really curious why at the same time the leader of hong kong hand-picked by beijing claimed that all we know we didn't have dialogue but at the same time then for a reply and he left her or any information from lawmaker from pro-democratic come
7:04 pm
from my point of view political crisis must solve 5 political system reform so what kind of reform are you talking about at this point political reform is that we are asking for free election now the leader of hong kong is not elected by hong kong people the chief executive is just a puppet of come on this a fraud and we hope the leader of hong kong can be the one getting mandate from people and let hong kong such a global city can enjoy step le t. and posterity so you're saying if they were free elections these protests and that violence would stop if hong kong people can enjoy free action we were in no see any kind of protest calling he unique in every week and meanwhile you're here in germany and also of you and you're heading after this we should say also to the u.s. to meet with supporters there and lawmakers there over the weekend i want to show you some pictures of what we saw the protesters doing there we can see that they're waving u.s. flags and we heard protesters there calling on the u.s. to liberate their territory just what this is still one country 2 systems but one
7:05 pm
country so what exactly are you asking for on this trip so just that has made it clear during the protests the last sunday more than $100.00 thousands hong kong people urged u.s. congress to pass the hong kong human rights and democracy act of course with people out the slogan of free hong kong only for a whole goal but we still strongly aware that hong kong is under the rule of beijing and part of. announced her attorneys the only the month for us is to have universal suffrage then or generate democracy and we urge world leaders when we are facing the frets of the truth moving to the border and how the martial law in hong kong might be executed in the food her now is that high for well leaders they have the responsibility to safe got hong kong's political and economic freedom all right pro-democracy leader joshua one thank you so much for joining us here on new thank you moving on to some other news now and

a new report says the world must invest now to protect against the effects of climate change or pay a heavier price later in the findings of the global commission on adaptation say targeted spending a $1.00 trillion dollars could generate more than 3 times that much in benefits against the climate crisis but that says once pristine areas are no big thunder and one of europe's last primeval forest and romania scorpion mountains is a case in point. driving through transylvania sparse in central rumania would switch off in several 100 years old conservationists capital pound is on the trail of illegal loggers they're moving ever deeper into the mountain forests where the animals and plants are especially in need of protection after only a few metres walk the 1st evidence of freshly felled trees chopped down without any regard for nature. but. we are shocked to see that they came
7:07 pm
all the way up to cut these forests it's a place where it's illegal to cut because it's next to die by an area and these forests should be always protected everything go wrong me hard for the forest is gone they make because they reduced the consistency of to forest and they took out the best wood for day in the street a straight ones which are the best for the industry. pound has been monitoring the destruction in these mountains for years the woods effect is are often under special protection so logging is only allowed under strict rules but the state owned forestry commission room silver is often criticised for doing little to enforce those rules. romania's minister for forestry and water has defended from silver saying only 40 percent of the country's forests are state owned and they're all the rules are complied with he says there's now a countrywide system in place which helps trace the tree back to the point of
7:08 pm
consignment. we aren't saying that everything is working perfectly otherwise we wouldn't need any controls were constantly improving not just the tree tracing but also the logging and the use of materials made from wood . but conservationists aren't convinced they say remain as forestry laws are to relax and even clash with e.u. rules to put more pressure on rumania activists are preparing to lodge a complaint with the european commission and the. timber industry has a very negative influence on what's happening but ultimately we are primarily focusing on the remaining thirty's they are the ones who must create the legal framework i did show that the rules implemented looking at these images it's hard to imagine that laws alone can help protect these forests timber loading points some illegal right in the middle of the forest lorries carrying word and small saw mills and one of the east poorest countries timber is big business and the demand

7:11 pm
a communist country so how is that possible i think. the time in chinese history when they needed a jacket they needed a capitalist hero in a way while still maintaining the very strict communist system and so he sort of fought against some in some ways against the communist system but he was also very much part of us and so he pushed his way through when he started to 24 hours to download a single page he tried various other options including failing to get a job at k.f.c. so i think if you were to write a book about about the rise of china the hero would have to be jack ma he said he pushed his way through did he have help did beijing have you know a hand and all about the success but i think it's in some ways a reflects the way chinese politics is broken down in a regional way and that he in his hometown of hung joe he did have help from from the local government there he also worked with the local government with the information office in the technology sector but at the same time he also played very much of the free market on developing developing what was to become in this

group and moving from being a schoolteacher into the into the china's rich is not it is really a remarkable story we should say cliff you had the chance to meet a few times i mean what do you think success has meant for businesses in china generally but i think probably more than anyone else in china he opened up business in china everywhere you go in the airports in china the it's full of books about jack ma the internet is full of how to emulate jack ma he's such a hero and also his model. of working closely with the government while at the same time focusing on the private sector is one that everyone wants to emulate so he's been a hugely important figure in that way not just his model of models really also change the kind of e-commerce landscape as well tell us more about that but if you look at it in some ways it's a classic story because. of a model itself is not an innovation it's very like e-bay in a way but he sort of picked up the e-bay model and ran with it and turned it into this into this story i mean in china the scale is everything there's 1400000000 consumers potentially so he basically took the model adopters to china and turned
7:13 pm
it into what it is today you said we mentioned as we said that you've met jack ma a few times what is important about knowing jack ma i mean what do you take away from meeting him yourself but he's an incredibly focused individual in some ways he combines this sort of commercial aspect but it's also not a big interest in the house for example is entirely she in the the exercise in the martial arts you know and he's one of his things possibly one of the things you do now that he retires is with $42000000.00 in his back $1000000000.00 in his back pocket is set up this chain of schools to teach. in the schools and things about so he combines a lot of these different strengths and i think that's what makes him special in some ways he's an out rider in in a country where thinking outside the box is not always valued he's made that's something to be valued very interesting stuff there are china analyst clifford cohen in with us here thank you so much. to sports now and it is

there for a reply that thread she's not replied it's not even to take she didn't reply to the latter so we're really curious why at the same time the leader of hong kong hand-picked by beijing claims that oh we'll we wouldn't have dialogue but at the same time they have her reply and they lacked her or any information from lawmaker from pro-democratic camp from my point of view political crisis must solved by political system reform so what kind of reform are you talking about at this point political reform is that we are asking for free you know action now the leader of hong kong is not elected by hong kong people the chief executive is just a puppet of come one is a fraud and we hope the leader of hong kong can be the one getting mandate from people and let hong kong such a global city can enjoy stepless he and posterity so you're saying if they were free elections these protests and that violence would stop if hong kong people can enjoy free action we were in no see any kind of protests calling he unique in every

mind he's following the story for us in brussels hi max we heard there the green deal will be one of the great challenges facing fonda line and her team what other tasks await this a new government. well we assume that the most important topics are those that so-called executive vice presidents will be tasked with with going forward with one of them is of course france to months and he will be in charge of the green deal for europe funds to moments was also a vice president in the current commission of his own to younger and is the commissioner from the netherlands the 2nd one you also mentioned my good to vest who is the danish commissioner she will also be an executive vice president and she will be in charge of the digital future for the european union of course an area where the e.u. has much ground to cover compared to for example what is happening in china and in the united states of america and there is also

a 3rd executive vice president from the eastern states from latvia to be to be precise here this is valid is. also current member of the e.u. commission former prime minister of that country and he will be in charge of growth and jobs and the social aspects of job so you can see the 3 priorities here are basically 2 translated it's climate change on the one hand trying to keep up with the with the old developments and having well you know european style job creation meaning with the social aspect to it max taking a closer look at that at the make up of this cabinet was enough on the line had promised that half the team would be women and it seems she succeeded in that area but were there any surprises there. she almost succeeded 13 women 14 men but given that the top job is also a woman was enough on the law and herself you could say this is a success she kept her promise i think this does qualify now surprises not so much

in the names because we knew the names before that but there is a little trouble brewing because some say and that was probably the main point of criticism that was enough on the line only got the job because she was helped by those from right wing populist parties or example from poland or from hungary now the polish commissioner will get the portfolio for agriculture which is extremely important to poland you could say it makes sense but on the other hand this might also be a gesture or a small thank you some will see it that way and then you have the you will from the czech republic so she is part of a populist party and she will be in charge of holding up european values that's also something that will probably give a headache to some and then and that's something though busy none of us would have expected at least at the beginning of august italy's commissioner is pollo genteel noni former prime minister but not a populist and at the beginning of august and some of you will remember that we had
8:03 pm
a fully populist government in italy and that heralded a lot of trouble for the formation of this commission but as we all know that government broke down and so now we have a very moderate commissioner with jenji loney who is very well regarded here in brussels and he will be in charge for economy start a lot of names are a lot to look forward to next up in france in brussels thank you. the taliban in afghanistan is vowing to keep fighting after donald trump's had peace talks were quote dead the u.s. president called off talks over the weekend to after the taliban claimed responsibility for a bomb attack in kabul that killed 12 people including a u.s. servicemen a for almost a year both sides have been negotiating in end to the 18 year and let's get more on the story now with journalist iley latif he she joins us from couple hi ali good to see you the tell of says now it will to keep on fighting in
8:04 pm
we've heard from the us present that peace talks are now off so what will actually change on the ground if anything look the fact is that nothing will actually really change on the ground in nothing had changed on the ground during to 9 rounds of negotiation do us a little low ball on who wear that prime rate poor the only actors in these negotiations neither were in stop their attacks i'm so that's why you think it's interesting that trimpe brought up this idea that they couldn't agree to a cease fire during that talks so as i was and precondition in the us was of stopping its attacks either dove want to government has never been party to these atomic so they were necessarily obligated to stop their raids and there are drunk shrikes an air shakes and things like got that they were overseeing or were a part of so that doesn't necessarily change anything through the average outs all i'm the only thing that in my now have led to some kind of clarity ellen is the back that to september 28th presidential election now appears to be 9099 percent on him but in terms of anything else nothing had changed during those talks and it
8:05 pm
seems as if nothing is going to change actor them deserts a question ali where do things go of from now the new you know what is the alternative here are 2 peace talks that's that's the scary part that's the question everyone is asking because now trump is talking about taking the war even further staging more attacks and being more violent environment against a toll on the taliban are saying the same saying that the u.s. will be the ultimate loser and if you had talked to avalon officials in the lead up to you know trump's tweet sort of g. railing the whole thing they had said that they had they they were planning to take all of their steps and their actions in there were terribly and the truth is that these military operations from all sides are not winning. you know we've seen provinces come very close to falling in the last few weeks we've seen districts falling changed hands back and forth and this is something that's not new this is something that's been going on for at least the last 8 or 9 years and no one you know none of the presidential candidates not the current presidency no one seems to have what has been called a plan b.
8:06 pm

a job at k.f.c. so i think if you're to write a book about about the rise of china the hero would have to be jack ma he said he pushed his way through did he have help did beijing have you know a hand in ali baba's success but i think it's in some ways a reflects the way chinese politics is broken down in a regional way and that he in his hometown of hung joe he did have help from from the local government there he also worked with the local government with the information office in the technology sector but at the same time he also played very much the free market on developing developing what was to become in this group moving from being a schoolteacher into that into the china's rich is not it is really a remarkable story we should say cliff you have the chance of a few times i mean what do you think success has meant for businesses in china generally well i think probably more than anyone else in china he opened up business in china everywhere you go in the airports in china the it's full of books about jack ma the internet is full of how to emulate jacques my he's such

the seals used by the wool industry provide proof that the sheep are being treated humanely. we have the wool mark seal there are 3 main categories but they don't address the issue of animal welfare that the 4th. the blue angel is a very well known eco label but it also doesn't deal with animal welfare aspect of . confidence in textiles label focuses on ecological standards for. the global organic textile standard certification has a very good reputation it indicates that producers have met very high social ecological and animal welfare standards in the production chain so you won't find it on products very often. but how can consumers inform themselves effectively about these products if it's funny because they cannot check these labels which
8:27 pm
provide a lot of information but the companies should do more to take into account the concerns that german consumers have about animal welfare of war. in other words most of these labels provide no information about whether the animals are treated humanely so consumers are still largely in the dark. now we're on our way to a strain where much of the world's wool is produced we want to find out more about that surgical procedure called musing. the state of new south wales is home to about 27000000 merino sheep. they've even been immortalized in statues. veterinarians at this farm owned by the university of sydney have been studying the

animal rights activists demand that mules and be banned outright but the veterinarians here say that's not a viable alternative at this point i played it. after one year of your musing what we had was for a silly thing. and let you go fishing. experts estimate the without meals into 1000000 she would die each year of maggot infestation farmers are trying to get rid of the skin folds through selective breeding. they will have quite a body and less recall especially around the butcher the bare breech area hopefully and i fully want it with moved. how many years do you want to tell you take another ticket. you see you already it's still pretty difficult. selective breeding don't seem to offer a long term solution to the problem of excessive skin folds. now we're on our way

to talk to a man who's been documenting the abuse of sheep on farms for decades. we're not going to use his full name but peter has worked on several sheep farms and has some horrific stories to tell. these photographs show sheep that have become injured all seriously ill but have not yet been put out of their misery for economic reasons. the managers keeping animals alive just because they think they're going to get. another lamb and unfortunately on these farms which have the bad welfare that's the mentality. how often does this happen. it's absolute you know everywhere but it's not really a crisis not which there's. a lot more properties from what. the industry like to have you. but now and no one's going to admit to that
8:31 pm
peter says he's also seen this sort of abuse on farms that have been checked by animal welfare inspectors. the property owners know they're coming in they'll come in. and everything looks hunky dory everything looks good on the dock and i get shot and i get a shower and just where the property are and i wouldn't want to show them that i actually don't get free rides and so it's really a case of you know who checks the check or. if regular inspections don't help to promote animal welfare perhaps the answer lies in better cooperation between sheep found and clothing manufacturers we travel to a farm on the australian island of tasmania. there are 11000 merinos here she graded david taylor stopped using musing 4 years ago. one of tireless best customers is here to observe the shearing process. stefan krauss is
8:32 pm
the product manager for a german outdoor wear company krauser is satisfied that taylor's shape of being raised humanely. is real singular but unfortunately a lot of farmers still use mules in without anesthetics it's horrible we simply couldn't imagine having our products associated with such a procedure so we're really trying to help avoid of course titles she still face the threat of maggot infestation untreated the maggots would borrow under the sheets skin which is also painful and deadly but tyler has come up with a process to prevent this he treats the lambs with pesticides it's expensive and time consuming but it works tyler says that the chemicals have no side effects and cannot be detected in the lambs wool also he she is all of the sheep several times a year in the affected area these new concepts have not yet caught on with other farmers in fact they've criticized his innovative approach. what think you're an
8:33 pm
idiot people are going doing this for 200 years and i've been used to doing something you know generations of when doing something so it's not for someone to come in and so you can't all this why it's a bit of a big pill to swallow. taylor shares his sheep just like other farmers do it takes 2 to 3 minutes for each one he says it's important to cause the animals as little stress as possible. now you have a how the shape of your leg the micro the shape of the face. there right away happily. there within. this year is comprised $150.00 sheep day each animal guild's an average of 6 kilos of womb. the material is then sorted by quality and pressed into bales about half the wool is sent to clients in germany the rest is sold at auction.
8:34 pm
but meals in free farms like tieless are the exception in australia that's a problem for clothing manufacturers that want to make sure that the wool is produced humanely. visiting how do things look right now but often bring in our company needs a lot more mules in free will so we're trying to convince other farmers to use the methods that david taylor does. the galleries. some mules in free wool is sold at auction. we've come to the astray you know we'll exchange in sydney to find out more. the total of 320000000 kilograms of roll wool are produced every year in australia the yield is worth the equivalent of about $2300000000.00 euros. andrew blanch is managing director of a large group production company and says merino wool is a key product for his clients. it's
8:35 pm
a very big part of the struggling economy and continues to be in the last few years has been a fantastic return for the struggle. but not who is the same and only experts like andrew blanch can spot the differences it all comes down to the crimping or the frequency of the wines in the wool you can even tell whether the sheep that produce this material have a lot of skin wrinkles. the shape that they come from might be a bit small and could have a little bit more wrinkle at the front of the animal and the shape that. comes from could be shaped a little bit larger and much recite much plainer he says that the wall of mills. friendship is not as fluffy and seems almost artificial. this one. feels more slippery it feels closer to synthetic i guess but it's

bias from germany for example like they don't. have any specific in germany they want on wheels but polished up the side there isn't any going from say 100. to 2 fails in 100 chance of cuba and that's what growers look at. until the time on the pitch they match up. a place where the shares you go solution with ira. but that procedure is still an exception among sheep farmers merryman says that musing free will is available if clients are willing to pay more for us. but there is not. such a thing about money in the end isn't. a vision and.
8:38 pm
it's not yet clear what the associations policy on meals in would be under its new chairman. we wanted to interview some government officials about animal welfare problems in the industry but they declined our requests so we talked to a member of the new south wales parliament. we have an animal that can't adapt to the australian environment so it requires all these interventions by humans and some of those interventions highly controversial some of them. very serious invasive treatments or procedures and they're often done without pain relief and if we did it to a cat or dog in australia you would be prosecuted and possibly put in jail. and propose legislation to end the practice of. when i 1st brought the motion in court

8:40 pm
a ton and it's essential for us to make sure that the well from our pharmacy stay separate from the rest of the material that of it it isn't elizabeth of london. first bales of are all wool that share common properties including 5 blank crimping and fineness a combined into production units that way several tons each every unit is given a number then the wool is washed and dried several times. production manager chris mckenzie keeps a close eye on the documentation so that the different varieties of wool stay separate. we shall see. what the 40 yeah. that was. like if you think. the difference. between real life months is that they are right. but
8:41 pm
then once it. was a lot of. the old it's been washed and dried it is then processed into finished gian the batch number stays the same throughout the system which includes several different production sites and often different companies in various countries. few businesses take the time and expense to keep such a close watch on the production process. that's really a good start of to that adds to the cost of our products and we put a lot of effort into doing these kinds of checks because we hold ourselves to a higher standard. that makes our products more expensive markers for the business i'm tired of. we've come to berlin for the fashion week shows that are held here twice a year. we are some of the exhibitors if they know with the will used in their products
8:42 pm
comes from. the campuses teigen. that ours is produced in australia. they pay a lot of attention to sustainability there and they make an effort to see that the sheep are treated humanely taught not bad habits are very pleased about that because our customers are concerned about animal welfare c.m. owns a couldn't promise of comparability about but i don't know anything about conditions of specific farms in new zealand or australia so. do your suppliers know whether the sheep have been subjected to musing for example wasn't a child suddenly just as a family owned company we need to trust the people we work with these are. many of the exhibitors rely on their manufacturers to tell them where the wound comes from . it can it's possible they might buy another batch of wool somewhere else but if they do they tell me like this comes from patagonia product the shooter comes to

see and asked me to can't afford to check on all of our distributors i am in canada and since fish fish caught we're constantly in contact with them to make sure that the well comes from sheep that are raised humanely just like ones now take advantage of. germany's minister for economic co-operation and development good miller is committed to sustainable clothing production miller is opposed to musing but says more research is needed on this problem his ministry has developed a new seal of approval for companies that produce socially and ecologically sustainable textiles. churches and actually standards also apply to animal welfare and can something. been written off as me go see this is the seal is associated with a large number of basic standards which of course also cover animal welfare as far as all is concerned you know i would as was but this is
8:44 pm
a very complex situation. as i said the sea will also deal with animal welfare standards in because. my staff will explain the details. the spokesperson says that the minister will provide a statement later today. you might think that good mullo would welcome the opportunity to discuss a project that's very important to him and. we try to talk to him again later but he declined our request for an interview. so we went back to the consumer initiative office. does this new seal apply to animal welfare not mine i'm vison but it's based on what i've learned so 5 plays only a small role if any too small the certification program needs to address the issue of animal welfare people who are concerned about this need to make their voices
8:45 pm
heard and if the minister takes those concerns into account he'll be on the right track and done. but how can consumers make sure that they're buying sustainable products you must have a walk every purchase makes a statement and people need to pay more attention to the sources of the textile products that they buy that way we can effect change. but how much influence to consumers really have how will they react when they find out more about how merino wool is produced. the young women we met earlier was shocked when we showed them videos that we put together for this report. i didn't know that it was this bad the company's always put a positive spin on it and they tell you that was a wonderful material but when you see something like this you think twice before
8:46 pm
you buy well it is the one with. the chemical for this i think i'd pay more for wool that was produced in humane conditions and. don't suffer if the shop and. the big chain store should do something about this they have the financial clout to make sure that well is produced humanely. but a lot of clothing manufacturers don't pay a lot of attention to animal welfare and many retailers don't ask enough questions about where they will comes from a strain will produce is a do. barges on by the teams traditional or humane methods consumers who are concerned about the situation will have to put pressure on the textile industry.

i'm serious almost got a thank you for joining us the taliban in afghanistan has vowed to keep fighting after donald trump said peace talks were quote dead the u.s. president called off talks of the weekend after the taliban claimed responsibility for a couple bomb attack that killed 12 people including a u.s. serviceman for almost a year both sides had been negotiating an end to the 18 year. and let's get more on the story now with journalist ali latif he joins us from kabul hi ali good to see you the taliban says now it will keep on fighting and we've heard from the u.s. president that peace talks are now off so what will actually change on the ground if anything. well the fact is that nothing will actually really change on the ground and nothing has changed on the ground during the 9 rounds of negotiation the u.s. and the talabani who are the primary who are the only actors in these negotiations neither one stop their attacks so that's why i think it's interesting that trump brought up to say that they couldn't agree to a cease fire during the talks was
8:51 pm
a precondition in the u.s. was of stopping its attacks either davon government has never been party to these attacks and they were necessarily obligated to stop their raids and their drone strikes and air strikes and things like that that they were overseeing or were a part of. so that doesn't necessarily change anything for the average at all i'm the only thing that it might have led to some kind of clarity on is the fact that to september 28th presidential election now appears to be 9099 percent but in terms of anything else nothing has changed during those talks and it seems as if nothing is going to change after that just a question ali where things go from now then you know what is the alternative here to peace talks. that's that's the scary part that's the question everyone is asking because now trump is talking about taking the war even further staging more attacks and being more violent environment against the toll of on the taliban are saying the same saying that the u.s. will be the ultimate loser and if you have talked to avalon officials in the lead
8:52 pm
up to you know trump's tweet sort of derailing the whole thing they had said that they had they they were planning to take all of their steps and their actions militarily and the truth is that these military operations from all sides are not winning. you know we've seen provinces come very close to falling in the last few weeks we've seen districts falling changed hands back and forth and this is something that's not new this is something that's been going on for at least the last 8 or 9 years and no one none none of the presidential candidates not the current presidency no one seems to have what has been called a plan b. in terms of a negotiated settlement because the fact is that this point the military option isn't working that hasn't been working it's not working and it's very unlikely to work in the future all right to journalist alley la t.v. speaking to us thank you so much for your insight there from couple. one of the figureheads of hong kong's pro-democracy movement joshua long is drawing official complaints from china with his tour of foreign countries along as here in germany

forests should be always protected everything go wrong me hard for the forest is gone they made because they reduced the consistency of to forests and they took out the best wood for day in the streets a straight ones which are the best for the industry. pound has been monitoring the destruction in these mountains for years through woods effect is often under special protection so logging is only allowed under strict rules but the state and forestry commission room silva is often criticised for doing little to enforce those rules. romania's minister for forestry and water has defended from silva saying only 40 percent of the country's forests are state owned and they're all the rules are complied with he says there's now a countrywide system in place which helps trace a tree back to the point of consignment. we aren't saying that everything is working perfectly otherwise we wouldn't need any controls

championship qualifiers now germany's men's team won an important away clash in northern ireland last night of his 4th is here with us liam i imagine germany fans are probably pretty relieved yes they are hoping they can finally take a deep breath and they needed these 3 points they needed this result especially after losing to the netherlands on friday because if they had also lost in northern ireland last night european qualification could have been on the line but something to remember is that they still have difficulty playing really well over the 90 minutes we saw that again and again yesterday i mean germany struggled to create clear cut chances in the 1st half with northern ireland threatening a number of times manuel neuer coming up big for them but trying to be in the 2nd half an eye catching volley from defender yes defend a moscow house in burke who broke the deadlock at 48 minutes and ensure it cannot be added a 2nd goal late in the match and the 2 no victory when sense germany to the top of

group c. with 3 matches remaining so exactly it's the result that they needed last not necessarily the performance or what are the players think of their performance. and i think the players know that they can and they have to do better i mean that was evident against the netherlands that was also evident against northern ireland and it says a lot about the team if it's your defender your defender that's cost a crew crucial goal in the game and not your attack and i think captain manono yes had it best that we had to be patient but this was at the end not an easy victory and we have the sound bite so why don't we take a listen to about. but there is one answer to this for you was a very important game for us you could tell that we were under quite a bit of pressure from which i think after the 1st half when northern ireland expended a lot of effort we knew that they would tire and give us a chance is sort of. busy that was how it panned out in the 2nd period and that's why even if we score the 2nd goal

a little too late. but we patiently waited for our opportunities. solem it does this all mean that the germans are in a good spot to qualify and at the moment yes i mean and they are also lucky because it's the top 2 teams in the group that will go through so when it comes to qualification yes it will qualify but i still think this team is a very far away from being a championship side and you know they still in rebuilding mode doesn't even have a consistent starting line up a starting 11 he still tinkering experimenting a lot of positions are still up for grabs but we also have to be very honest with ourselves and very realistic that this fight is very young and very inexperienced they are lot of new players on the side and a lot of them have very little big tournament experience so and many of them still haven't peak so there's still a lot to come so i say patients patients patients and of course they also get to hone their skills in october against argentina in a friendly if they are at high expectations or from the german team omaha talking

the ideological struggle in berlin from that time is mirrored in protests 9000 miles away in hong kong its residents demanding greater democracy and voting rights in a moment we'll speak to a well known figurehead of these protests joshua war but here's more on hong kong's fortressed movement since its handover to china in 1970. 997 the beginning of a new era in hong kong the prison colony was returned to china under the principle of one country 2 systems. it guaranteed hong kong its own economic legal and political systems for 50 years the tensions underlying that principle have soaked all the major protests in the territory ever since china pushing for one country hong kong protesters pushing to protect their autonomy in 2003 on the anniversary

of the handover half a 1000000 people turned out to demonstrate against article 23 and national security reform opponents fear the law would threaten freedom of speech and assembly freedoms nonexistent in mainland china the bill ended up being shelved. more than a decade later occupy central also known as the umbrella movement propelled a new generation of pro-democracy activists to international prominence they included then 17 year old joshua wang who was later among the leaders convicted and jailed the activists at the heart of the protest had already been mobilizing for several years spurred on by a crackdown on mainland dissidents and concerns about beijing's encroachments into the territory a sit in to demand free elections lasted 79 days. it was the most serious

support is absolutely important and significant i can say that in the past 3 months i myself on 100 percent of the behaviors of every protester especially more than $2000000.00 joined a protest how can we expect that we agree on 100 percent of all the pay fees but instead of claiming or activists we know that how hong kong government must be a constable and responsible to the political crisis and our how to make is not on separate is ideology we are asking for the fundamental right we hope what's in the election to our gotham do you want. we hope hong kong and under autonomy and freedom and we are not the one on separate this ideology so you do believe hong kong is a part of china and one country 2 systems should continue one country 2 systems already eroded to be one country one and a half system or now totally collapsed polity and transform that to be

9:42 pm
for the green party here in germany good to have you with us and you were so in this report we just heard that europe is equally responsible for india's environmental problems what is germany doing about that well we have a lot of discussion about the situation and i agree that germany could do much more as europe as a whole could do much more we are talking a lot about higher standards ecological and economic or social standards human rights standards but our government has one weakness they think our government thinks that the responsibility lies with the computer consumers and they should just buy fair trade coffee and i think this is not what politicians are for or decision to do you suggest i suggest what we also suggest our government they should take over responsibility and find binding rules for source import of those clothes and this would make a huge difference for the brands have
9:43 pm
a huge challenge to change the situation well of course we've seen already some initiatives only one the so-called green button initiative was launched only yesterday it's a labeling system that should inform consumers about the products they buy if that's already in the right direction you think well it is it does not do any harm that's right we have already certain to 40 labels and we do not need a 31st label in this relation it doesn't really improve the situation in bangladesh or india it's for consumers maybe an information system but it just north of the situation in india the big names take pot though even though it's voluntarily yeah but a little bit afraid it could turn out to be green washing for them you know we need really binding rules and why do those big firms refuse to take over the responsibility and they and. there are many companies or it is they we need binding rules because those companies take over responsibility and many don't and this
9:44 pm
does disturb competition here in our market our rights of binding rules will actually be helpful also if the big companies but isn't there's also a problem that if you outsource business which is what's happened with a lot of these companies you're no longer obliged to it here to rules that are made here in germany though it would be a german rule so they would be a turning to the rules and there would be compulsory for the rules for the companies to import only products that are produced under social intercourse logical conditions we set so binding rules is the solutions as we kick up its development spokesman for the green party thank you so much and you. and that's your business update here in t w thanks for watching.

it's good to have you with us the taliban in afghanistan is vowing to keep fighting after donald trump said peace talks were quote dead the u.s. president called off talks over the weekend after the taliban claimed responsibility for a bomb and couple that killed 12 people including a u.s. serviceman for almost a year both sides have been negotiating an end to the 18 here war. and let's get more on the story now with journalist i leave latif he joins us from kabul hi ali good to see you the taliban says now it will keep on fighting and we've heard from the u.s. prison that peace talks are now off so what will actually change on the ground if anything. well the fact is that nothing will actually really change on the ground and nothing has changed on the ground during the 9 rounds of negotiation the u.s. and the talabani who are the primary who are the only actors in these negotiations neither one stop their attacks so that's why i think it's interesting that trump brought up the sadia that they couldn't agree to
9:51 pm
a ceasefire during the talks because i wasn't precondition in the us wasn't stopping its attacks either davon government has never been party to these attacks so they weren't necessarily obligated to stop their raids and their drone strikes and air strikes and things like that that they were overseeing or were a part of. so that doesn't necessarily change anything for the average at all i'm the only thing that it might have led to some kind of clarity on is the fact that the september 20th presidential election now appears to be 9099 percent but in terms of anything else nothing has changed during those talks and it seems as if nothing is going to change after that just a question ali where things go from now then you know what is the alternative here to peace talks. that's that's the scary part that's the question everyone is asking because now trump is talking about taking the war even further staging more attacks and being more violent environment against a toll on the taliban are saying the same saying that the u.s. will be the ultimate loser and if you have talked to other line officials in the

lead up to you know trying to tweet sort of gee railing the whole thing they had said that they had they they were planning to take all of their steps and their actions militarily and the truth is that these military operations from all sides are not winning. you know we've seen provinces come very close to falling in the last few weeks we've seen districts fall in changed hands back and forth and this is something that's not new this is something that's been going on for at least the last 8 or 9 years and no one you know none of the presidential candidates not the current presidency no one seems to have what is being called a plan b. in terms of a negotiated settlement because the fact is at this point the military option isn't working that hasn't been working it's not working and it's very unlikely to work in the future all right a journalist la t.v. speaking to us thank you for so much for your insights there from couple now one of the figureheads of hong kong's pro-democracy movement joshua wang is drawing official complaints from china with his tour of foreign countries wanting us here

in germany where he met foreign minister heikal mosques and meeting that led to a diplomatic complaint from china which called the meeting disrespectful one said the hong kong protest movement would continue despite the government dropping a controversial extradition that. earlier i spoke to joshua long and i asked him why violence had continued despite the main objective of getting that a bill withdrawn having been achieved. i fink the protests must continue with our course on free election of course no one would enjoy to see clash and fallon's happen but with our course on free election the i would commit and fundamental goal of hong kong people is just asking for the right to elect our own government we hope to have the right to what all right there will be more from joshua wong on news asia coming up right after this show let's get a check in on some other stories making news around the world now north korea has fired at least 2 new and identify projectiles into the sea that is according to

9:56 pm
executive vice presidents will be tasked with with going forward with one of them is of course funds to months and he will be in charge of the green deal for europe funds to moments was also a vice president in the current commission of silk road younger and is the commissioner from the netherlands the 2nd one you also mentioned my good to vest who is the danish commissioner she will also be an executive vice president and she will be in charge of the digital future for the european union of course an area where the e.u. has much ground to cover compared to for example what is happening in china and in the united states of america and there is also a 3rd executive vice president from the eastern states from latvia to be to be precise here this is valid this is also current member of the e.u. commission former prime minister of that country and he will be in charge of growth and jobs and the social aspects of job so you can see the 3 priorities here
9:57 pm
basically to translate it it's climate change on the one hand trying to keep up with the with the digital developments and having well you know european style job creation meaning with the social aspect to it max taking a closer look at that the make up of this cabinet was enough underlined had promised that half a teen would be women and it seems she succeeded in that area but were there any surprises there. she almost succeeded 13 women 14 men but given that the top job is also a woman was enough on the lion herself you could say this is a success she kept her promise i think this does qualify now surprises not so much in the names because we knew the names before that but there is a little trouble brewing because some say and that was probably the main point of criticism that it was a left on the line only got the job because she was helped by those from right wing populist parties or example from poland or from hungary now the polish commissioner
9:58 pm
will get the portfolio for agriculture which is extremely important to poland you could say it makes sense but on the other hand this might also be a jester or a small thank you some will see it that way and then you have there you go from the czech republic so she is part of a populist party and she will be in charge of holding up european values that's also something that will probably give a headache to some and then and that's something though busy none of us would have expected at least at the beginning of august italy's commissioner is pollo genteel noni former prime minister but not a populist and at the beginning of august and some of you will remember that we had a fully populist government in italy and that heralded a lot of trouble for the formation of this commission but as we all know that government broke down and so now we have a very moderate commissioner with jenji loney who is very well regarded here in brussels and he will be in charge for economy start a lot of names are

a lot to look forward to next something for us in brussels thank you. britain's parliament is heading into a 5 week recess that was called by prime minister boris johnson's government it comes so the country counts down to its expected exit from the european union on october 31st there was a raucous final session last night the chamber voted for a 2nd time against holding a snap election prime minister johnson wanted an election on october 15th but the opposition labor party refused to back the proposed the proposal unless he agreed to seek a break that delay. opponents of course it is not be election bid last week boris johnson gave it another go in a sitting stretching into the early hours of tuesday. once again he was not prepared to compromise on his vision of a swift bright says right. now this is big i will go to brussels our government
10:00 pm
will go to brussels on october the 17th and negotiate our departure on the 31st of october hopefully with a deal mr speak up but without one if necessary i will not ask for another delay obviously this june a predictable response from the opposition which wants to avoid a no jail break $66.00 un international we are eager for an election but as keen as we are we are not prepared to risk inflicting that is that i'm not sure you can ask for our community our job our services or indeed our rights. in the end prime minister johnson's election bid was easily defeated. and to use were quick to pounce. thank you mr speaker and i should have congratulated the prime minister because at least he's been consistent is lost every vote he's brought to this was. parliament has now gone into recess

for 5 weeks after johnson perot's the house the opposition made their opinion clear about that. who. a court here in germany recently ruled that the government must repatriate the children of its citizens who travel to the middle east to fight for the so-called islamic state now official figures suggest that a more than a 1000 german citizens islamists went to syria and iraq to join i.a.s. half of them are still there $119.00 of them are under arrest many in a kurdish refugee camp in northern syria the detainees detainees include 73 women the return of former fighters and their families has been a topic of heated debate here the 1st orphans of i.a.s. fighters have already been brought back to germany but a strategy for dealing with adult jihadists is yet to be decided let's look now at

31 people have died and around 100 have been injured in the city of karbala after a walkway collapsed during assuras celebrations a sure is when many muslims commemorate the death of the prophet muhammad's grandson hussein in the 7th century the celebrations take place in karbala south of baghdad where hussein's buried some celebrations include self flagellation rituals . the german government says it is prepared to boost public spending if there is an economic crisis for years the government in berlin has followed a strict policy of not taking on new debt the german finance minister on the shorts told parliament the policy would not change in the future but he now says the government would pump billions of euros into the economy if needed germany is the largest economy in the u. e.u. but it has struck in past months and that has fueled concerns of the country as falling into a recession. no new debt that has been and remains chairman finance

minister off charlotte's motto when he presented germany's federal budget for 2020 that was no different cuts him nonetheless used all available leeway it is an expansionary budget that includes many investments and decisions for the future it's the right thing to do because we're facing big challengers next years german federal budget 1st sees a total of $360000000000.00 euro since spending 41 percent of budget some social welfare spending $45000000000.00 euros or 12 percent of next year spent shit on defense and 8 percent on transportation and digital infrastructure but lin has come for sharp criticism from its international partners for not spending more as my nose it in my view it is essential that with a solid financial basis that we now have we can react with many many billions of euros if they're through recession in germany or europe and we will do it then.
10:07 pm
the opposition parties see that differently. as this is fairly fun for them it's completely irresponsible to nicely set as we would have to wait until the financial crisis is getting really bad then we might take steps against it. we see that our strategy to focus on xmas surpluses has led to resentment from a european neighbors. critics say that the german government's ban on new dad should be lifted so that more money can be invested in climate protection. adding the new draft is not an end in itself we need a green budget by have to save money and still invest in the same time investing means building up a fund for climate protection and that also helps investing huge upside investments on an oil i once but. the german budget is due to be officially approved at the end of november before. then the plan could well face some changes.

to soccer and european championship qualifiers now germany's men's team won an important away clash in northern ireland last night to limit occupy his forces here with us aleem i imagine germany fans are probably pretty relieved because they are hoping they can finally take a deep breath and they needed these 3 points they needed this result especially after losing to the netherlands on friday because if they had also lost in northern ireland last night european qualification could have been on the line but something to remember is that they still have difficulty playing really well over the 90 minutes we saw that again and again yesterday i mean germany struggled to create clear cut chances in the 1st half with northern ireland threatening a number of times manuel neuer coming up big for them but trying to lead in the 2nd half an eye catching volley from defender yes defender. burke who broke the deadlock at 48 minutes and surged cannot be added
10:09 pm
a 2nd goal late in the match and the 2 no rick to win sense germany to the top of group c. with 3 matches remaining so exactly it's the result that they needed last not necessarily the performance or what are the players think of their performance. and i think the players know that they can and they have to do better i mean that was evident against the netherlands that was also evident against northern ireland and it says a lot about the team if it's your defender your defender that's course the crucial goal in the game and not your attack and i think captain man or no yes had it best that we have to be patient but this was at the end not an easy victory and we have the sound bite so why don't we take a listen to that. there's one answer to this really was a very important game for us you could tell that we were under quite a bit of pressure from what was i think after the 1st half where northern ireland expended a lot of effort we knew that they were tired and it was chances are sort of.
10:10 pm
that was how it panned out in the 2nd period and that's why even if we score the 2nd goal a little too late to look we patiently waited for our opportunities. so lima does this all mean that the germans are in a good spot to qualify and at the moment yes i mean and they are also lucky because it's the top 2 teams in the group that will go through it so when it comes to policy yes they will qualify but i still think this team is a very far away from being a championship side and you know they still in rebuilding mode doesn't even have a consistent starting lineup a starting 11 he's still tinkering experimenting a lot of positions are still up for grabs but we also have to be very honest with ourselves and very realistic that this site is very young and very inexperienced there are a lot of new k.s. on this side and a lot of them have very little big tournament experience so and many of them still haven't peaked so there's still a lot to come so i say patients patients patients and of course they also get to
