to get out of there. this is g.w. news live from berlin that disputes between germany and china escalates over a hong kong democracy activists visit to berlin beijing summons the german ambassador after a meeting between joshua wong and germany's foreign minister in the german capital china now his attorney of meddling in its affairs. also coming up to hundreds of nigerians back at home for a spate of attacks on foreigners in south africa but with chronic unemployment in their homeland what is the future of full.
2:01 pm
time sumi so misconducts good to have you with us china has formally summoned the german ambassador to beijing after a meeting between the german foreign minister heikal moscow and the hong kong protest leader joshua wang in berlin this week now during his visit one called on the german government to publicly condemn police violence and abuse of power during the ongoing demonstrations in hong kong now and a direct attack on an important trading partner beijing is warning of negative consequences for relations between china and germany. it was just you were walking search day in berlin he came to the german capital with a message for i'm going to mexico and other world leaders is a must for the chancellor pay attention to hong kong's protests and showed us a part to hong kong some precise asian safeguard hong kong is not only the responsibility of hong kong people but also the responsibility for world leaders
2:02 pm
prefer to hong kong to face the next tenement square masacre happened for a decade ago on monday wong met german foreign minister heiko must prompting shop criticism from beijing it summons germany's ambassador accusing but then of interfering in china's affairs. only go. and see what happens no i'm fortunately have to say will have negative consequences on bilateral relations and china will have to read to you. at home old university just one packed tight 3 here to his message was one of defiance and a strong belief in the power of the protest movement in his home city don't let a youngster or an elderly all we stand as one with our determination to fight for a better future. joshua won't find many supporters in the german capital. i think
2:03 pm
he did a good job he did like you do them at like a hero is that you just hear hear swear on this about it that he is the facilitator . knows about the bible to a person he's very impressive very brave and he's still very young. i find him particularly admirable because he's risking his life in freedom with his activism. activism will still skillz the prime person. i think it's a huge motivation for people who are brought to come closer to. so be motivated and follow closely to what is happening in our home city. many here tell us their concerns about joshua wong and what will happen to him when he returns to hong kong but 1st he's heading for the united states where he hopes to gain more support the hong kong's pro-democracy movement. all right let's get some analysis on all of this we have our chief political correspondent melinda crane here in
2:04 pm
berlin and our correspondent in hong kong good to see you both melinda let's start with you so how is the german government reacting to beijing's quite harsh criticism of the joshua ones visit the foreign ministry rejected the criticism saying that it is perfectly normal procedure for the former the foreign minister to meet with a representative of civil society from another country and yesterday in her speech to parliament the chancellor said very clearly that human rights are indispensable to germany in regard to the hong kong chinese tensions and that she had conveyed that message on her visit to beijing last week she also said that germany absolutely stands by the principle of one land 2 systems when it comes to china and hong kong that said there is an element of caution here in berlin as well the chancellor herself has not met with joshua long and her spokesperson emphasized that this week and this visit by mr wong to berlin is not an official government
2:05 pm
sponsored visit in any way in fact it is the host group is it is a german tabloid newspaper the boot sayto and it was a reception by that newspaper that was the place where the foreign minister met joshua when they're just one did also hold a press conference here in berlin yesterday what more did he have to say. indeed he had 3 clear messages to the german government he said that he would like to hear a more direct public condemnation of the violence that's been used against protesters and also of abuses of power he also said that he thinks the german government should stop selling equipment to the hong kong police as long as there is ongoing violence being used by the police in crowd control and thirdly he said that he thinks germany should tie trade more closely to human rights for example possibly suspending trade with china or imposing sanctions and or inserting human
2:06 pm
rights causes into trade agreements with china so 3 very clear messages to the german government all right much yes let's come to you now and get beijing's perspective on all of this why is china so upset about this visit. beijing is extremely nervous about what's happening in hong kong the protests have gone into their 4th month no and they do not show any sign of dying out beijing the hong kong government have tried lots of things to scare away protesters to suppress the movement to calm down the protests none of this has worked and these protests are now threatening to overshadow beijing celebrations of founding the seventy's and the verse 3 of the founding of the people's republic of china and that is something that is angering beijing off course beijing is trying to limit the space for its critics abroad it has been doing so for some years companies who
2:07 pm
have for example listed taiwan not as a province of china but as a separate entity have felt beijing's. to change their websites and printed materials and governments have also been under pressure not to meet with beijing's critics in 2005. with the dalai lama. was met was a diplomatic response and economic sanctions by the beijing government she has not met the dalai lama after and no other western leader is meeting the dalai lama has been meeting the dalai lama in recent years and social one who is now one of the most prominent critics of beijing is probably experiencing a similar thing pressure on foreign governments is mounting not to meet with him not to give his criticism a platform. you know what about this direct response from beijing that there could be consequences for ties between china and germany what could that mean.
2:08 pm
well it starts with diplomatic responses german deployments would not get appointments with senior officials or would hard to get an appointment with senior officials not be invited to some events diplomatic events celebrations at cetera and it could go further sanctions on german companies or inspections that german companies suddenly face economic threats and in the end there could also be a boy caught it has happened before north korea japan they all have experienced boycotts by the chinese public incited by the government on their companies however china at this moment needs germany in this critical period of the trade war with the united states and it is not likely that will escalate to the maximum at this
2:09 pm
moment but some at least diplomatic sanctions are probably going to be felt in the next few months all right our correspondents munda crain in berlin and my chest filling up there in hong kong thank you both very much. and we have some breaking news coming into us now the european central bank has unveiled a fresh stimulus plan aimed at boosting the eurozone economy now among the measures that's just been announced the reintroduction of a bond buying program and another cut in interest rates pushing borrowing costs further into negative territory moves up part of efforts to get inflation to just under 2 percent the level economists believe reflects the year right amount of momentum and con and. let's go to our markets correspondent contribution to standing by for us in frankfurt hi conrad this rate decision was expected by some to tell us more about
2:10 pm
the market reactions that you're seeing there. well i have seen take a look at the german stock market the german stock index dax which plunged immediately after the disease decision came out a bit of a surprise because of course some more generous monetary policy conditions that's very positive for the markets but the plunge only last a full couple of minutes and then the german stock market really rose into positive territory because as you said it was not a lot of us who prize that the european central bank low as its deposit rate that's the rate that banks pay when they put money at a bank account at the e.c.b. from minus point 4 percent to minus point 5 but the decision today to restart the bond purchases quantitative easing with $20000000000.00 euros worth of bond purchases each month starting november 1st that's a big surprise for
2:11 pm
a majority of the on the markets people had said here in frankfurt that likely druggy would stop talking about it but they had not really reckoned with such an announcement ok kind of the idea behind this is to boost the eurozone economy will this have the intended effect. that's very very doubtful not only the you know usual suspects the critics of this monetary policy from the hardliners here in germany not only they are convinced that the impact of the european central bank's monetary policy on the real economy has become less and less effective more and more economists believe that the impact really has become much weaker that of course property prices have been driven upwards and many other asset prices rich people have become richer if you like to say it in a you know popular way but the real economy it has been maybe saved during the
2:12 pm
crisis times but there is not enough arriving off the cheap money in the economy to really make it restart cheap money is really all boring cause that's not really a problem that businesses in europe have all right on markets correspondent in for us in frankfurt thank you. now to some other stories making news around the world russian investigators have raided the homes and offices of opposition supporters linked to prevalent critic alexina bomi the raids took place nearly 40 cities across russia with computers and other equipment confiscated it comes just days after allies of president vladimir putin suffered major losses in moscow city election in the southeastern spain has been battered by severe brain and flash floods in the valencia region torrential rains caused the tatiana river to burst its banks flooding homes and forcing the evacuation of surrounding areas more

ninja had a little. show for. the can you. get. a 1st nigerians evacuated from south africa have arrived back in the country hundreds of nigerians signed up for free flights home following a wave of violence against foreigners in south africa but while there is no while there is relief at having escaped many say they are uncertain what the future holds
2:18 pm
for them at home our correspondent funny for char was one of the 1st international correspondents to meet they were tourney's at the airport in lagos and she said to us this report slowly and with a long delay it finally arrives the airplane from johannesburg. and some officials are waiting for the passengers to disembark. this is the 1st machine from south africa with nigerian rhetoric the 1st since anti immigrant violence erupted in and around your hand last week now that the nigerians are back what does the future hold for that. warm welcome to begin with but a lot of uncertainty to this woman left south africa after 7 years because of the xenophobic attacks she says she has brought her child with her. so. what's the plan for your future and what are you hoping to
2:19 pm
probably find your job because i'm a graduate. of. hours earlier and just outside of the airport the usual hustle in lagos nigeria is facing chronic unemployment especially among its youth just like south africa this young man studied to be an accountant but can only survive repairing cars he believes the future is bleak for the returning. few so sorry for them because. they don't. give you. a question that a senior assistant of president bihari is eager to answer the government has been criticised for not doing enough for the returning a private airline chose to volunteer to bring some of them home one of the major
2:20 pm
problems we see in this situation is communication so they're going to do with time that will last for 2 months that is not what these people want to hear 189 people arrive on the 1st plane tired exhausted and confused expecting more from the government. to provide some. school halls like electricity and water on good roads you understand me what's. that thing they. very basic means to start a business like they had in south africa were they could make a living but were they no longer. now a paris court tests found a saudi princess and solomon guilty of complicity in violence with a weapon and complicity in kidnapping the princess is the only daughter of the saudi king and sister of the de facto ruler mohamed bin so much as she was accused
2:21 pm
of ordering her bodyguard to beat up a plumber after she took photos during renovation work at her paris apartment and one photo allegedly caught the prince's reflection in a mirror and the princess was tried in absentia she denied the allegations and said she believed the plumber intended to sell the photos the workman told police the princess threatened to kill him and that he was punched kicked and forced to kiss her feet well let's get more on the story with our correspondent lisa lewis she is at the courthouse in paris where she's been following this story for us hi lisa good to see you tell us more about the verdict. well the judge said i think that both the bodyguard and the princes are entirely guilty so the bodyguard will have to pay a fine of $5000.00 euros and will have a 8 months on bail the princess will have to pay $10000.00 euros and 10 months in
2:22 pm
prison on bail as well as this verdict that just seems to be convinced that what the plumber alleged happened really happened and also it's an indication that there might actually think that although the prince is only accused of being complicit in these acts that she was actually the one mandating ordering the body got to do so lisa tell us more about why this case is so significant why it's been getting so much attention. well it's significant because it's symbolic this is the clash of 2 worlds of 2 ways of seeing the world trying to figure out if france and saudi arabia can do business together and sometimes it's a rocky road and now today we saw one example of to what extent one country can actually impose its rules on someone else someone from the other country that comes to france and might not actually respect the rules that are here
2:23 pm
active in france lisa what are some of the reactions to the verdict been. well the bodyguard was present today and he was just muttering something like this is french justice so he doesn't seem very happy but there's also his lawyer came out and said we are now thinking of appealing against the judgment on social media when it actually this actually happened in 2016. that there were lots of reactions on twitter and they were saying basically what is this i mean what kind of charming family is this have they not understood that they have to adhere to western values when they come to france. that we have to say this is not the 1st time that the saudi royal has faced the french judicial system but i understand there is some reluctance to prosecute these cases why is that. well there is a doubt about that at least you know saudi arabia and france have
2:24 pm
a very important relationship a business relationship there are lots of saudi clients that come regularly to france and they spend millions here really you know there are others gambles over the past few years where for example one princes came here spend $20000000.00 different luxury shops in paris and then didn't want to foot the bill and then refused a few years later she didn't want to foot the bill at a hotel so it's actually quite difficult to then get the cash and it's difficult to show that france really does everything that's needed to make sure these clients pay right lisa lewis for us at the courthouse in paris thank you lisa. to sports now the baseball european championship continues in germany this week with a crunch game for the hosts they face italy in the quarterfinals
2:25 pm
