$100.00 in afghanistan and it comes as a u.s. drone strike aimed at islamic state militants killed dozens of civilians. and 3 former executives at the fukushima nuclear power plant that went into meltdown are found not guilty they were accused of failing to mitigate the disaster that came in the wake of the 2011 tsunami. 10 candidates prime minister justin trudeau says he's sorry he took time out from a busy election campaign after the picture of him wearing brown face makeup was published in time magazine but will he survive this embarrassing revelation. i'm irish waiter welcome to the show. both of the main political leaders in israel have said they were. want to form coalition governments following tuesday's

inconclusive election results prime minister benjamin netanyahu called on his main rival centrist benny gantz to join him in a coalition under his own leadership gunks whose blue and white party narrowly took the most seats in the knesset has said he also wants a coalition without netanyahu and with himself as prime minister netanyahu said he was surprised and disappointed by his opponents response. turning us now is our correspondent kramer reporting from jerusalem so tanya what did gantz say at this press conference that we saw earlier does he have a vision for how unity government would work. right what he's basically saying it is. blue and white won the elections they have to seat lead over the likud 323-3231 that if there is a unity government and he strongly committed to unity government said they floated this idea during the election campaign all along that it would be on that the terms
3:03 pm
of a blue and white not mr netanyahu ones and i think the most important thing you said is that it's such a unity government would be for him then it would be under his leadership so this would be the end you know for mr netanyahu probably thinking maybe about. her taste in the premiership or something like that and mr netanyahu has already said he's disappointed by this response. so blue and white and benny gantz more or less claiming victory even though the election result was so close is this a vision that netanyahu and his likud party could possibly buy into. i think really the early days and i think what both sides here trying to do is to basically set out their terms and telling the other party well we have willing to do our best to form a unity government but it's very hard to see how they will actually bridge the gap i mean blue and white has said many guns has said that they would sit with him he
3:04 pm
could a new unity government but. unity government without netanyahu because they don't want to sit with a prime minister who is under a possible indictment for corruption charges they have. made that very clear and also many guns has criticize in his statements that have been in the netanyahu that are coming already with his own set of ideas actually what happened since yesterday is that benyamin netanyahu is set down together with his traditional potential coalition partners the smaller right wing parties and national religious yamuna and the article also talks parties and they have said they would only come together and negotiate together where spending gunns has said in his statement that he wants to see a broad and liberal government and that netanyahu contact page and you terms to the negotiations tanya for us in jerusalem thank you so much.

at least 30 civilians have been killed and 40 wounded in an airstrike in eastern afghanistan province the u.s. drone attack was aimed at a hideout used by islamic state militants but hit workers in a field meanwhile in southern afghanistan at least 20 people were killed and more than 90 wounded in a truck bomb attack authorities say the early morning blast occurred next to a hospital in the city of cholera the taliban have claimed responsibility for that attack. in the midst of all this afghanistan is preparing for presidential elections at the end of the month earlier i spoke to journalist alley the t.v. in kabul and asked him if he thought the recent increase in violence was linked to the upcoming vote. absolutely absolutely the taliban have said that they will purposely target election campaigns and they warn people not to go to election

campaigns they just did it in the northern province of water. and so this is going to be a major question now one of the leading presidential tickets is very hopeful that they'll get something like 65 percent turnout but you know others are saying that it may be much much lower and a big factor in this will be the security situation that was journalist t.v. speaking to us earlier from the afghan capital kabul and now bring you some of the other stories making news around the world the european commission says it has received new documents from the british government on how to rework the rejected bragg's that divorce deal as the 2 sides try to reach a compromise britain says it will not meet an artificial deadline but make for most emissions when it is ready. police in athens have removed over 200 migrants including dozens of children from 2 squats in the city center to move as part of a clean up by the new conservative government but activists say the operation unfairly targets migrant families who would otherwise be homeless.

faced up to 5 years in prison if found guilty of professional negligence. for the victims of the fukushima disaster thursday's verdict was the bitter disappointment a japanese court exonerated 3 former executives in the only criminal trial over the nuclear meltdown those who had hoped to see them convicted vented their frustration . we cannot understand it we are not satisfied. in these 8 and a half years so many people were forced to leave their houses. forced to leave their homeland. and still remain displaced and unable to decide where to live. how would you feel if your house today were taken away from you. but this is extremely frustrating. the 3 men have been senior officials

avoided with better safety planning previous court rulings have ordered millions of dollars in compensation to be paid out. the plaintiffs in the criminal trial are now considering an appeal a final bid in the long search for accountability. journalist michael 10 with the showing at a news agency in tokyo spoke to us earlier and explained the court's verdict this was kind of the verdict that everybody was expecting the prosecutors not just once but twice refused to indict anybody over the nuclear crisis and they were only forced to do so because citizen panels on 2 different occasions according to a local system overrode the prosecutor's decisions and essential early forced the prosecutors to prosecute the case but the japanese system itself the political system the elite system didn't want to hold anybody accountable and that in the end

that's exactly the results a giant nuclear accident and nobody's responsible. in hong kong 3 months of pro-democracy demonstrations have pitted police against protesters in increasingly violent street clashes with no end in sight to the unrest people in hong kong with close personal ties to members of the police force are finding themselves in a difficult position but he is pulling and ceri chan have the story of 2 women caught in the middle of a political crisis images of clashes between police and protesters are deeply troubling to marry when still early the conflict line runs through their family they support the protests but mary is the daughter of a policeman and stella's fiance serves in the riot police i have been depressed since it all began in june i feel my position is truly embarrassing.
3:12 pm
since the beginning police have been accused of using excessive violence on protesters the longer the protests last the more aggressive both sides become videos of policemen abusing protesters regularly go viral and anger many people stella's says that she and her fiance have agreed to discuss things as calm as possible. but sometimes they become angry and confronting more aggressively than he just answers that he was not on the spot and did not see what was happening so he cannot judge they have agreed to meet us on the condition of anonymity still unmarried are not their real names they fear repercussions for their relatives in the police force but they could also become a target of radical protestors in hong kong on the internet people say the families of policeman should burn in hell. come on i didn't do anything wrong why should i

suffer. the pro-government and the pro-democracy camps show less and less tolerance for each other several times both sides are clashed on the street or in shopping centers government supporters call protesters cockroaches protestors accuse them of being paid agents and mary's family the constant arguments led to her move out of her parents' home. since the protests started i've only had dinner with them once we don't see each other and i left all the family groups on what's up. an end to the conflict that is tearing their families apart is nowhere in sight protests are happening every weekend and are those stellar lead disapproves of the violence that mocks many protests she continues to attend some of the marchers she carefully avoids revealing her background to fellow protesters. i have never

thought that people would see me as guilty for being the fiance of a policeman some friends have asked me if i still wanted to have children knowing they would grow up with such a burden and you're helpless. but there are also days she says when she believes that the rift between police and society can be healed after this crisis and. the washington news still to come rising sea levels threaten to any day for neighborhoods and archaeological sites in alexandria one of the world's oldest cities find out what authorities in egypt are doing to save the city. in canada prime minister justin trudeau has apologized after a picture of him wearing brown face makeup was published in time magazine the photo
3:15 pm
was taken in 2001 when trudeau was a teacher and attended a costume party told reporters he was deeply sorry but the story is a bombshell in the middle of a tense canadian election year bit of a hobbit of haunting politicians this 2001 photo of justin trudeau in brighton face is no different. clearly rattled the canadian prime minister at pains to apologize in 2001. i was a teacher in vancouver i attended and of year for the theme was arabian nights i dressed up in a latin costume and put makeup on it was something that i didn't think was racist at the time but now i recognize it was something racist to do and i am deeply saddened when you take on this scandal feel to the fire of canada's election campaign. wearing brown faces an active open market and
3:16 pm
race is just as racist in 2001 as it is in 2018 but what comedian sought to see is someone with a complete lack of judgment and integrity and someone who's not fit to govern this . trudeau launched his reelection bid last week just as reports a marriage that police are investigating claims he had corruption charges dropped against an engineering company. but for someone who has made political he out of his support for multiculturalism this could be more damaging. well it's troubling i mean really it's insulting. any time we hear examples of brown face or black facing it's really it's it's making a mockery of someone for what they live and what the relived experiences are. i think you need to answer for these going to answer the question why he did that perhaps more than the charge of racism this image will lead to questions of loss
3:17 pm
then to city and whether justin true to is indeed the poster boy of liberalism that he claims to be. more on the story i'm joined now in the studio by g.w. reporter peter dulce of peter this isn't a good look for anyone but certainly not for a major western leader who's running for reelection right now yeah i think that's putting it mildly i mean really this is just the latest chapter in what appears to be a dramatic fall from grace for justin trudeau remember just 4 years ago he wrote in to office on life is rainbow of great he was the golden boy he was being billed as he was a canadian obama he was developed like almost a cult following and his model good looks and you know these gravity defying joke of poses that went viral. you know it really made him the heartthrob of people around the world you know female and male ever many he was seen as the beginning of a new era in canadian politics he ran on a very liberal agenda his cabinet was the most
3:18 pm
a verse in canadian history multicultural and equal parts men and women and unlike many of his previous us or he actively sought to make amends for kenya's colonial sense and so for all these reasons i think for many voters. this really raises a question was all of that just an act. and for those who don't know black and brown faces been around for a little while but why is it offensive it has a very derogatory history yeah it was essentially born out of racism it became a centerpiece of white american popular culture in the mid to late 1900 centuries actress with paint their face black and their lips like bright red and they would perform these incredibly demeaning characters of black people you know showing them essentially as subhuman so let me show you what i'm talking about right. now i'm going to have video. and so you know this tradition continue well into the
3:19 pm
20th century with stars like you garland portraying black people is feebleminded in shucking and jiving jokes and it really was a way to keep black people in their place and showing them is unfair for equal treatment and so the history has been well documented and it's time that is very and yet it's still around and coming out in sort of bits and spurts here and there we still see it coming up the right specially in the u.s. where we've seen similar scandals just and reason months involving white people in power and that have come to light like the governor of alabama kay ivy who was forced to apologize after it was revealed that she had worn black face in college the same happened to virginia governor ralph northam earlier this year after a photo of his medical school yearbook showed him a black face and it's not just politicians right it's fashionable gucci for instance that had to pull this weather from his collection falling complaints that it resembled a blackface yes making racism fashionable so now on the flip side there's an
3:20 pm
argument that these politicians for instance and justin trudeau this was many decades ago when they did this which doesn't make it acceptable certainly but should they be held to account now. i absolutely think they should i mean especially in trudeau's case he is 47 he was not a product of the secretary just fifty's and sixty's the way the maybe an ivy or north of were trudeau came of age when rodney king was beaten to a pulp by police in the way he knows what racism looks like. and when he decides where that brown face as a 29 year old teacher at that we had already entered the 21st century and so to say that he didn't consider it racist at the time to me frankly either sounds ignorant or disingenuous and i'm not sure which is worse did every reporter peter offer us on the story thank you so much thank you. turning now to the egyptian city of alexandria founded by alexander the great more than 2000 years ago it is now

wrestling with the effects of climate change rising sea levels threaten to inundate poor neighborhoods and archaeological sites authorities are responding with emergency measures most importantly the erection of concrete barriers out at sea to hold back the tide. the threats pounds the shore every few seconds. at stake ancient citadels and archeological finds. sandy beaches and poor neighborhoods which could be inundated by rising sea levels for protection simple if ugly concrete blocks lifted by enormous cranes. and filled rock lifted by dinosaur like diggers. they're meant simply to buy some time and a chance to rebuild someday some of what has already been lost.

they will protect the shore from any sort of erosion in order to be able in the future to rebuild sandy shores that were lost due to a rise in sea levels over alexandria's coast. the 15th century citadel of bay is one of alexandria's gems and it's already been affected by the rising sea. a lot. of the del was built on a huge rock and the last few years this rock has faced a lot of strong currents that lead to its solution and gaps have appeared to years ago water leakage through those gaps to the interior of the citadel itself this means that if we hadn't started immediately with protection procedures it would have led to the collapse of the rock and the citadel it would. alexandria's more than 60 kilometers of waterfront is losing ground to erosion if the average tourist
3:23 pm
can't see it the average fisherman can't. for all those sea levels getting higher is not something that we can see immediately with our eyes. but over the years it started to be noticeable to us. it was for instance the sandy beaches shrink and there's less sand. even though but still not to the level that ordinary people can see. the flies since this is the it is out of. ordinary environmental scientists can see it a rise in the level of the c i knock on effect of climate change. that's the starting point but actually claim it is a system to get the system so when you talk about change and temperature it means cheesey and the different patterns of. this would lead to one of the impacts of
