mint movement which invites young people especially to stage school strikes for the climb. on the frontline climate change you know it's already happening it's not waiting for it to happen where you know a matter of. 30 years and you know people don't want to leave family they don't want to marry and they shouldn't have to well i say in school i'm learning about the effects of climate change and i'm learning that we need to do something yet i'm seeing that people in charge and the people who are running our country and doing anything to me this is confusing so i'm here today to step up and say all throughout the day we'll be checking in with our correspondents reporting from the climate protests all around the world let's go 1st to the philippines capital to manila where do the views on a santos is standing by for us anna good day to you can you tell us what's happening where you are. i'm here at the university of the philippines where students have gathered classes to join this protest for climate justice they are
10:03 am
joined by members of digitas communities who have been displaced from their homes because of severe weather conditions and other environmental degradation now see behind me the protests it's really like playful they're cartoon characters or people on stilts but the students are very clear make no mistake they're very serious about demanding climate justice and the serious response from the government they want the government to declare a climate emergency here in the philippines ok you know the philippines are of course had a special risk of climate change with a global warming with so many islands an archipelago so what challenge is is the philippines facing. the philippines is listed as the 3rd most climate vulnerable country in the world and the 1st of. feel the effects of climate
10:04 am
change i really the people at the peripherals of society these are the ones who live in the coastal areas are fishermen the ones who are farming and also those who live in urban poor or marginalized communities the ones who are in very vulnerable housing they feel the effects immediately now these people are here at this protest and they are joined by the students who are saying that they are also feeling the effects of climate change because they fear for their future they are disappointed that the government has not sending a representative to the c o p talks this december the president said that the talks will call for emission. carbon emissions and that disproportionately f.x. countries like the philippines who don't really contribute to carbon emissions but they are saying that's precisely where our voices need to be heard that's precisely where the philippians a very vulnerable country needs to stay that we want our homes to be protected we want a future ok and i thank you very much for that from manila and i santos for us at

the protest. kong is in the taiwanese capital taipei she gave us this is testament of what's happening there today. on the 1st day of the fighting is so crucial in taiwan today in taipei it grips up students from universities high schools and primary schools they held a press conference to take up the movements during school time so they radio you finance back ration politicians especially in presidential elections candidates to sign petitions and put it to their political platforms and that is to curb greenhouse gases and control temperature rise and paris climate agreements so it's an island nation taiwan focused a lot from extreme by the more serious hypos and brainstorm but compared to others and comments were issues local citizens are not that concerned about climate change so the activists aim is to raise public awareness by linking the problems to local

politics and there will be more some police and strict talks on the coming few days . to be calm there while the unit of the fridays for future strikes fear that soon berg is to spearhead a rally later today in new york city last month she travelled to the u.s. to be on hand for next week's un climate summit now it's been her appeals that have mobilized so many young people. why was god why do we want. scientists environmentalism is asians and politicians have been trying for years to make the climate a matter of urgency in vain a 16 year old going to to mug has done it to him bird braved the open sea on a 2 week voyage aboard a yacht from europe to the u.s. to bring her message to the american president a self-proclaimed climate skeptic in person the media follow the trip closely. the climate and ecological crisis is
10:07 am
a global crisis and the biggest crisis humanity is to face and if we don't manage to work together to cooperate and to work together despite our differences there we will fail so we need to. to stand together and support each other. and to take action it all started about a year ago every friday connected to him back protested in front of the swedish parliament and in so doing spark the fridays for future movement just a few months later the schoolgirl mobilized millions of people for the climate suddenly young people all over the world took to the streets like here in india. and mexico. or in australia. or in europe. after her arrival in new york at the end of august 2 and back made it clear at a meeting with un general assembly president mary espinosa the she hoped the

upcoming climate gathering would lead to concrete action you want the summit. to be some kind of break. in. where people start to realize what is actually going on and. so we have high expectations. and my mistakes. now turn bet is counting on the support of her fellow campaigners all over the world and we'll continue to find that. and one of those fellow campaigners is now with us here in the studio. fridays for future support here in berlin good morning carol good morning what do you want to see come out of today's protests around the world i hope that the politicians recognize us and that they actually start acting that the u.n. climate summit will come up with a real solution against this crisis because this crisis will affect every single one of us ok you know
10:09 am
a lot of schools here in germany are giving students the day off without penalty to take part in these strikes why do you think this movement has become so very strong here in germany well. we've seen a lot of stagnation in the politics. in germany we've had the same chancellor for a long time and she hasn't done much we are a country with a lot of resources we are very wealthy country we have the opportunities to become a leader against the fight in the fight against climate change but we are not and that is a scandal and i think that's why people are so frustrated especially in germany of the government isn't doing anything although they have the capacity used to say oh ok you sauced talking to taipei taiwan there and you saw the young people there they're not as engaged as we can see there is as we heard of young people here in germany especially if you look at the numbers out on the streets every friday here in germany what would you say to young people in taipei to taiwan. i would say to them this is an issue that will affect everyone on this planet and i
10:10 am
hope that even though they might not be striking today i hope that they will in the future because this issue will really affect every single citizen on this planet ok as part of that more and more students are taking part in the strike you know there have been families fined for allowing their children to go to to the strikes and there are sanctions threatened for families in the future should their children do do so the argument there is that children should be learning and not protesting. out on a school day what's your response that i know people who have been fined and i think it's actually like a scandal because we learned so much from the strikes this is not about algebra this is about learning about a real paul like world politics every single one of us has learned so much while striking this is about our future our planet our lives and to restrict people fighting for this cause is a scandal in my opinion ok talking about politics the german government is looking
10:11 am
to introduce a number of measures to to reduce carbon emissions here in germany let's take a look at that and talk some more of that. germans love to cycle they diligently recycle when it comes to the environment and germans like to consider themselves model citizens even angle america was once hailed as the climate chancellor proportioning other countries to acknowledge the scale of climate change merkel's government also decided to phase out nuclear energy by 2022 but still germany is no climate change role model in fact it is one of the countries with the highest c o 2 emissions worldwide germany wants to help these emissions by 2030 experts warn it won't meet this target why it's early exit from nuclear energy made germany heavily reliant on fossil fuels manufacturing transport and other industries also
10:12 am
contribute to germany's high emissions. how can germany reduce its greenhouse gases a minimum price for budget airlines is under consideration other ideas include improving public transport to encourage people to use their cars less. the biggest thing germany can do is reduce its fossil fuel consumption and germany only wants to phase out coal energy by 2038. in the meantime it wants to tax carbon dioxide a carbon tax would make coal and other fossil fuels more expensive. but the proposals targeting fossil fuels have been met with resistance coal miners and other industrial workers fear for their jobs. climate activists have taken to the streets hoping to persuade the german government to take action now. ok car the actions of the german government is looking at could mean higher taxes the loss of jobs is it worth
10:13 am
a climate action too when you look at that well i think that's always a false way to look at it. last year we lost 30000 jobs in renewable energies. the that is not even equal to the slight amount of jobs we were losing coal and also there are studies that the coal miners can actually work in other parts of other businesses but this is about a real issue that will affect every single person on this planet we had time to solve this issue and make it a win win issue for everyone but the government has been sleeping for years and now we just have to realize that this is an issue where we have to do every single measure we can and of course climate justice is a really important factor for us so we want no one left behind we want to tax the rich the people that are flying the most the people that have the biggest cars have the biggest houses that emit the most and those are not the working people ok you call it you're calling it climate justice briefly if you could do you think the politicians are listening and if they're not will they be listening after today i
10:14 am
definitely think they will after today i mean we'll have millions of people all across the world on the streets if they will not be listening they're fools for us thanks very much for coming in today from the fridays for future here in berlin thanks very much for. parts of the world climate change and extreme weather are not something that might happen in the future but something take place right now the region around mercia in southeastern spain for example is considered europe's vegetable garden but a week ago a year's worth of rain fell in just 24 hours with disastrous consequences for farmers and ultimately for consumers as well. it was the worst flood in 100 years and the destruction can still be seen a week after the storm houses and streets were destroyed. but it affected farmers the most one of them is an tonio partitas. his collie flower was almost ready to
10:15 am
harvest and now it's been under water for the past week the floods might be his downfall. we're making so little money. we can't go on like this. we're thinking about giving up agriculture. a few kilometers away vegetable farmer francisco sanchez looks at the devastation across his artichoke field pieces of asphalt are mixed in with the vegetables. we don't know yet what the total loss is and we need to look at our irrigation systems as the field itself is lost for the next 3 or 4 months. you can't plant anything there for now. if you send to have the farmers association assign listens to the farmers even if the extent of the damage is not yet known the affected area
10:16 am
speaks for itself we think $300000.00 hectors in the region were partially or completely lost. him. the question that many here are asking will climate change cause these storms to happen more often in the future at the university of more c o one goma's the varo knows that rising temperatures play a major role on me that i would ask it with a woman mediterranean you can expect more violent weather phenomena but it's still unknown whether villa kerr more frequently during this time of the fit the storm was devastating for farmers the representative of the farmers association is now concerned about the storm's effect at the market but when i get it i'm assuming that 15 to 20 percent of the entire production has been lost. so that up with the old robot. lemons for export this company is still in business but the boss knows that many others are suffering from the storm. you know what i think if you can't
10:17 am
get to the fields because they're on the water you won't be able to harvest your fruit that's the problem but fortunately we have areas that we can still reach even after a heavy rainfall that's why we've had no problems after the flood of the century business continues even if many fields are still underwater. well the german icebreaker is set to begin a year long mission to monitor the impact of climate change in the arctic. down will drift freely through the polarizers that measures the extent of warming the arctic region has already experienced the earth's biggest temperature increases. at 1st the arctic research ship. will be able to journey north under its own steam navigating through a thin sheet of arctic ice but soon afterwards the vessel will face much tougher conditions. for a year it will drift through the arctic ocean surrounded by pack ice on its way to
10:18 am
the north pole and beyond. the ship post an extensive network of measuring stations designed to collect data on interactions between ice sea and the atmosphere. because the arctic is warming up faster and faster it is considered the epicenter of global climate change the expedition aims to gain better understanding of the arctic influence on global climate change the data collected by oceanographers could be valuable for the future. during their journey the crew of the poor will be accompanied by ice breakers from china russia and sweden. and helicopters will deliver the necessary supplies. the extraordinary experiment will last $350.00 days and travel 2500 kilometers it may be the last of its kind because if global warming continues at the present

rate then the arctic could already be ice free by the summer of 2030. the other stories making news this hour the saudi led coalition fighting with the rebels in yemen has destroyed 4 sites near the ports. are being used by the rebels weapons including. last week's attack on saudi arabian oil. which was claimed by the. israel is facing a political impasse after inconclusive elections centrist benny gantz as rejected calls from prime minister benjamin netanyahu to form a unity government then yahoo would propose leading that coalition but dances blue and white party says it will not form an alliance with the prime minister. it's to canada now where a racial racism scandal surrounding canadian prime minister justin trudeau is
10:20 am
deepening video dating back to the 1990 s. has now emerged pro wearing blackface on thursday time magazine published a picture of him wearing brown face at a party in 2001 to go has apologized for the images saying they caused deep hurt but he's vowing to continue his re-election bid. it was after repeated embarrassing and what the prime minister himself called racist revelations from his past as recounted as justin trudeau tried to set the record straight that i recollect that but i recognize that it is something absolutely unacceptable to do and i appreciate calling it make up but it was blackface and that is just not right it is something that. people who live with the kind of discrimination. that far too many people do because of the color of their skin or their history or their origins or their language or their religion. face on
10:21 am
a regular basis and i didn't see that from the layers of privilege that i have and for that i am deeply sorry and i apologize. ok such contrition came on the back of an earlier frank explanation and apology in 2001. i was a teacher. i attended an individual or the thing was radiant nights. dressed up in a loving costume and put makeup on. i shouldn't on. should've known better but i didn't. and i'm going to sort all of which indicated how his past could derail his future trudeau wearing brown face at a party in 2001 and on other occasions have set the election campaign ablaze opposition politicians have been scathing this is so hurtful to so many canadians
10:22 am
people who have faced an injury both in physical violence and in words people who haven't been able to get jobs because of the color of their skin now are waking up to seeing the prime minister of this country their lives reality. someone happy to call trudeau a racist directly wearing brown faces and i hope that more free and racist is just as racist in 2001 as it is in 2019 and a shooter who has been stated as a young dynamic progressive who's made political play out of his support for diversity and multi-culturalism say for him this charge of racist offense could be more damaging than for his rivals cracking his cafferty curated public image let's talk about this more now with nature christian senior writer of vice canada who just put out a piece on this story and how brown facing has affected her personally thanks so
10:23 am
much for coming in you know 1st off me as you grew up and canada and you experience as a child i really enjoyed your article thanks for writing it. you know you grew up with this and you serious that yourself and when you saw justin trudeau how did you feel what did that bring up for you. at 1st i was just shocked by that image and as more images came out so i realize how upsetting it was i realize that you know it felt like he was making a mockery of you know my culture i'm indian and there are he was dressed as a latin quote unquote so it just felt very insulting to me movies surprised when you saw the images with everything we know about justin trudeau being of course a staunch defender of minority rights he has a very diverse cabinet we surprised yeah i was surprised it was a very jarring image and it's in a sharp contrast to his public image of being very progressive ok now in your piece
10:24 am
of you say that to go sure to come up with some answers so that people of color in canada especially can trust him again can spend on that a little bit yes a cave dodged a lot of questions he did not answer the question of why black face and brown face is race. he didn't explain at all why he chose to do that not one time but several times minimum of 3 times on this point so i felt like he was just sort of dancing around the answer and saying that it's offensive and he understands how he didn't know it and at age 29 and. i just feel like we deserve a better explanation for why he thought it was appropriate to do that ok what would be some explanations that would satisfy you that would make you happy if justin trudeau came out with them i mean i think honestly personally i think the truth is
10:25 am
he just thought it was using and funny and he hasn't outright said that so to me honesty would be better than him sort of dancing around the question ok to be straightforward and stand up and say this is this is what happened i thought it was funny it's not ok. in regards to that you call him a privileged white dude who grew up in a bubble and wonder if you some laughing behind your back it's quite a strong thing to say about the prime minister do you think other people of color encounter feeling that way today i mean i know definitely within my friend group there are people who are feeling that way he is a privileged white dude he is the son of the prime minister he's part of a political dynasty the school he was teaching at a very posh hall you know 20 grand a year to go to kindergarten there so like let's not care selves he is a part of that. and yeah i do feel like part of this is he has this public image behind our backs he's dressing up in brown face in
10:26 am
a best case scenario what should this incident do for canada especially for privileged white people i mean for me it what bothers me is that people see canada as this like b. and you know progressive politics they always compare it to the u.s. i would love for people to realize that we have our own races we have our own issues trudeau is not the be all end all and i would love for people in canada to actually take that and realize that ok after all this or are you going to vote for him next month we have a journal i'm a journalist i wouldn't talk about back ok well do you think it's going to to affect is. chances of being reelected realistically i don't thing this will be like an issue and in the polls but maybe more people will say oh mr christian thanks very much for your ergo and thanks so much for coming in and
