the taliban and the us collapsed more than 100 civilians have been killed in a spate of bombings in recent weeks the last elections in 2014 were mired in allegations of fraud and it with the us stepping in to appoint a power sharing government the main contenders or the incumbent president. and his long term rival. other candidates have already alleged the process has been manipulated and warned of chaos and violence if this election result is discredited joining me now for more is journalist. afghanistan ali polls or closing we've already heard about violence in the country is this affecting voting today. the violence is definitely affecting it didn't always happen in fact the bigger problem right now is the logistical problems so i want to vote early in the morning
12:03 pm
today and since then i've been to 4 different. 'd polling stations and in each one when i walked in i saw 203040 people 'd going to election officials saying that we were told that our names are not on the list we weren't found on the biometric devices and were not allowed to vote even though they had voted in the parliamentary election in october at the same location with the same id with the same sticker and this is becoming a problem we heard throughout the country but what's really worrying people is that it's happening in kabul and other major cities think joel can dollars what does that mean for the villages and districts so this is creating a lot of worries intentional fraud or trying to keep people from the vote. and so this has been the worry from the beginning that more so in security that it would again be as you said earlier an issue of legitimacy what will happen if there are accusations of fraud again in 2014 well so that's
12:04 pm
a mouthful ali but let's step back for viewers and get a little perspective here essentially what we're saying is there has been some violence at some polling stations there has been some technical issues and at the same time there are widespread concerns about fraud so are these free and fair elections. this is a question that people are asking you know i was at one polling station in a high school where a female doctor she was trying to vote and they told her that you are used to ease anybody and she showed her can't you look at my hands not in my answer in out the possible i'm not a literate i know what's going on and she said basically she said if this isn't fraud i don't know what it is right because people have this sense that people are being purposely kept away from the polls that i have there's negligence or enough to 2 or some other issue at hand with the independent election commission. and so this is again people's real fear is like we're having and we're spending an hour to

3 hours arguing with election officials that our means are not on the list even though we voted in the same center in the last election in october so this is this is a major problem that we keep hearing about everywhere across the country so president ghani has earlier pointedly remarked that the most important issue here is to elect a leader who could bring peace back to this war torn country can any of the candidates achieve that. i mean both of the leading candidates stopped president vanny have said that once the election is several they will then move on to real formal peace talks trying to establish peace talks with the taliban but what we've seen you said earlier that more than a 100 people have been killed in recent weeks and what we have to remember is that those 100 people were both in you know bombings in attacks claimed by groups like the tal apartment but also by bombings and drone strikes claimed by u.s. military and of our forces and so what we're seeing is an intensifying of the fight
12:06 pm
on all sides from the united states from the forces and from the armed opposition groups and so this is exactly the question people are asking can there actually you know if the if the peace talks in doha failed and if people who supported the government who are hoping for an election were happy that the peace deal will take the issue of peace talks going forward seriously and there's no real indication of how that will take shape or whether or not that will happen and this is really the question people are asking are we going to do 5 more years of this kind of violence or will the government start taking the issue of peace really seriously for months no matter who's the president ali latif you joining us from a very significant and apparently troubled election day in afghanistan thank you very much thank you. the taliban or a resurgent force in afghanistan in 18 years after they were ousted from power there are new rings ideas about their return in the capital kabul many young people

fear they could lose their freedoms that they've grown up with. a pop concert delighted fans clamor to take pictures it looks like any pop concert almost anywhere in the world but this is afghanistan. much in the country has truly changed since taliban rule ended cafes and restaurants have sprung up and young people live in a way that would have been unthinkable under fundamentalist rule. when i was talking to my mom about the situation out of 30 years ago and when taliban were here it was horrible like all these stories are horrible and i am not i am not very yeah i think i'm afraid for fluent english is thanks to the american school she attends sabby who. opened a movie rental store recently and it's doing well his films range from hollywood

action to romantic drama the taliban would never have allowed it but if the taliban were to rule again my store wouldn't be here. they would simply shut it down. the flowers music and entertainment in general would see the same fate this kind of amusement doesn't fit taliban dogma. outside kabul in the countryside much less has changed in the past 18 years hardly any education high unemployment and bitter poverty a brickmaker here earns less than a year 0 a day young people are lucky if they find work at all what will happen when taliban fighters want to return to a normal life and start to mending work and an income. sound selfish there is nothing in this entire region except this brick works just as he and i mean what will happen if more and more people want to work here with. only a few young people have actually experienced the taliban's rule themselves but they

have lived through the groups attacks sue russia lost his father just one week ago in such an attack. anything just not the taliban they will keep killing they are murderers that's all i have to say. the bigger threat are from all . forgiveness and reconciliation are difficult to imagine here even for the young people who haven't lost anyone. i am a paraphrase i don't trust the taliban at all i don't. because right now woman and the situation of women have been improved and especially young generation . afghan youth are fed up with terrorism they want to live like other young people without mistrust and violence moving from that will be afghanistan's most difficult task. to washington now the u.s.
