i. the only reason to shout. this is d.w. news live from berlin violence in afghanistan as voters head to the polls to elect a new president incumbent ashraf ghani promised as a feller's after the election was canceled flights over security concerns about there have been reports several people have been killed and dozens injured as the taliban target polling stations also coming up. another vote this time
1:01 pm
a snap election in austria sebastian called his government was brought down by a corruption scandal but he looks set to leave again we take a look at what's at stake ahead of sunday's home. i'm rebecca ritter's thanks for joining us people in afghanistan are voting today in presidential elections i made a wave of violence and concerns about legitimacy the taliban is opposing the elections and has vowed to attack polling stations that's after peace talks between the taliban and the us collapsed more than a 100 civilians have been killed in a spate of bombings in recent weeks the last election in 24 tane was mired in allegations of fraud and ended with the us stepping in to appoint a power sharing government the main contenders are the incumbent president ashraf ghani and his long term rival until a deal and all the candidates have already alleged the process has been manipulated
1:02 pm
and one of chaos and violence if this election result is discredited. joining me now is for more is journalist ali the teeth in afghanistan. there's been a lot of reports of violence so far how has that affected voting. the issue of violence is definitely affected voting and it's going to affect places where people who are already i'm sure whether they should vote or not but one thing that we have to take in consideration that's really affecting voting right now is the logistics . i went to vote earlier this morning for me you know with the polling center was supposed to open at 7 it didn't end up opening until closer to 8 and even then people had issues you know getting to the booth they were supposed to get to understanding how to vote where to put their votes and now the biggest problem is you know i've been to 4 different polling centers and in the last few hours and everywhere i go there's dozens of people who say that their names aren't on the
1:03 pm
list at all and they're essentially being told you know you can't vote so they either have to go to the independent election commission and file some kind of a complaint or somehow trying to reregister their which is not as easy as it sounds or essentially just go home. and this has become a big issue and you know the one thing people are saying if this is what's happening in kabul in some of the most well known neighborhoods of the capital city what's going on outside in the districts and in the provinces why attacks on polling stations and these technical issues and these concerns of fraud everything you've been saying at these really free and fair elections. this is exactly the question of people are asking you know i was at what a couple polling centers and the people who were turned away who were being told you know your name is not on the list and you can't vote this is what they're saying you know they're like how is this not fraud they feel as if they're being kept from their vote which they see as an issue of fraud and so what will happen
1:04 pm
now is you know they've extended the voting by about 2 hours but people are fearful that starting tomorrow all the questions will iraq which team will claim that there was fraud which team will claim that there is irregularities and what will happen from there you know because they don't want to read 2014 where the entire process took months and months and president ghani has said the most important issue was finding a leader who could bring peace to the war torn nation and can any of the candidates likely to change this it's not easy i mean because what we know is that the taliban are very unhappy with the president and himself so he will have to find a way to try and convince them to trust him. as for the other candidates you know the taliban keep saying that any government now honest on and they've issued statements against the election saying it's a stooge of government saying that you know the election is fraudulent so any government that comes to form will have to somehow prove its legitimacy to the
1:05 pm
talat and have to prove that the taliban you know should negotiate with them because the taliban right now is of the stance that any government in kabul doesn't matter what matters is the decisions made in washington and it is heathy reporting for us from afghanistan thanks very much. well austrians are set to head to the polls on sunday the early vote comes after chancellor sebastian cortes is governing coalition with a right wing populist freedom party collapsed in may the collapse was sparked by a corruption scandal surrounding them vice chancellor and head of the freedom party heinz christian. he was filmed and i be thick covering public offering public contracts in exchange for campaign help from a woman posing as a russian oligarchs needs. resigned i mean austrian government fell apart chancellor sebastian cortes was then ousted in a no confidence vote. well
1:06 pm
joining me to discuss this further is data recorder spondon max hoffman in vienna max thanks for joining me sebastian courts his government was brought down by that scandal i was just talking about has he managed to shake that off. well the people that were seen in the video you just mentioned rebecca were exclusively members of that far right freedom party so it was easy for sebastian cause to distance himself from the freedom party and he did that immediately sensing that his coalition really had absolutely no chance of continuing so he didn't try to hold on to the coalition he said this is it i cannot continue with that but that's not the only thing there's also the part that he has survived a number of minor scandals since it doesn't seem to stick people like him he's very successful so i went on the streets of vienna yesterday to try to find out what's behind this success of sébastien coats and what he's actually going to do with it after the election here's the report. in austria this is called.
1:07 pm
love us exley and i has good reason to give out lots of them on the campaign trail along with turquoise colored muffins she's running for the austrian people's party and will be on the winning side on sunday also because of this man is a bust encodes does that and if he. has a very direct honest and clear way of talking that you can understand he doesn't try to use a typical politician style he just says things that make sense to people like the thing it do for you because you since. it seems to be a winning tactic despite a number of scandals in the last months hoots and his party have polled around 34 percent of the vote 12 points ahead of anyone else here's an example for that so called clear speech. should be news guns gobby our political direction is very clear we have ended 60 years of death policy we have reduced taxes step by
1:08 pm
step and we have a forceful strategy in the fight against illegal immigration. so with the winner all but the side of the real question is who will be his coalition partner. on the weekend the streets of vienna were full with campaigners jockeying for the best possible position. there are several options courts could go back together with the scandal ridden old partner the right wing freedom party. the social democrats might also be interested. but possibly the most intriguing option is a coalition that involves the rising green party icon in fly and then of course we contacts lead anything we want to follow the will of the photos for you god in austria the climate crisis has become one of the most important campaign issues on friday 30000 demonstrators participated in the so-called earth to strike. still
1:09 pm
a coalition between greens and conservatives seems like a long shot. jambos it will we have our red lines when it comes to human rights and the environment and if the conservatives end up saying we can live with all of that then great we'd be happy with this sudden floods and that their lives how realistic is that this is well that's exactly the point we can't really imagine it right now and. that's why this time around the real suspense will come after austria's elections but if i send cool it's will have to form a viable coalition mag said does this mean that the fall riots are out of all stream politics for the same foreseeable future. there would certainly be a huge outcry among i could say a majority here in austria if of us encodes really decides to go back with the freedom party they would certainly have the majority to do that but there's just so much trouble with the freedom party because the scandal that we just saw earlier
1:10 pm
and that's infamous video is not the only scandal that they're trying to get out of this would probably not be what i mentioned in the report of buyable coalition and that's why many think that's a bust and courts might not go that way although on certain issues he's very close to the freedom party for example on migration but there are other options for example the social democrats that are kind of desperate at the moment as in other european countries because they're not coming out of that hole so they might be an option and then what i mentioned in the report the greens depends on how much they'll get of the vote they might have to have a 3rd party the liberals but that would be very complicated so the suspense goes on while we're looking forward to the outcome but yeah you did mention the grains and you as you said you mention them in the report you said it was a long shot how likely is it that they could form. well 1st of all you have to keep in mind that the greens right now they're not in the national parliament and
1:11 pm
they're set at least in the polls so far to gain as much as 12 maybe even more percent of the vote that would be a huge huge leap forward they would be the big winners of that election but they are very far away from sequester codes on climate policy but more even so in human rights and on migration so really to get together there is no viable path right now but what's really struck me here in vienna is that nobody excluded anything there weren't really any very clear red lines they're willing to talk to each other so like i said you know what really happened with that mix in the end that's anyone's guess right now because it calls himself has not excluded anything and if cause as he's looking very likely is re-elected what will his priorities bay when he forms government what will it mean for you it. sebastian quotes is a very well known entity in the european union usually based in brussels and he was the one to really force this tough line on migration not only on illegal
1:12 pm
immigration but on migration even against the german chancellor against are going to battle depending on the coalition partner this could change he's also known as someone who wants to cut taxes who says it needs to be worth it to get up in the morning and go to work you could even call this sort of a populist position we've heard that many times in different countries even maybe in the united states with donald trump and he always says he's very clear on everything but if you look at behind it he's not that clear it's all campaign slogans he's very good at that very slick very young very talented politician no doubt about that but what he will actually do with that really depends on his coalition partner max hoffman in vienna thank you very much. now let's turn to some of the other stories making news around the world nigerian police have rescued more than 300 people held in chains in a building in the northern city of can do you know most of the captives were children a police spokesman said the building housed an islamic school and that several
